OOC - 5/21/2020

The following are the characters that still seem to be attached to someone:

Infurious
Cugel Winterbreath
Illrede Windwhisper
The Anvilfire Twins
Abigail White and Ged
Sir Wasauch and Paps Kahuna

I don't think I want more than seven or eight players. Once we know who is sticking I will open the RTJ back up.

Was just going over the Twins and I have to make a modification.  It seems that I've been assuming that a Lucern Hammer is a war hammer for the last 40 years when it's actually a type of polearm...

I learned my error a few years back while playing another game on RPOL.

In recreating my . . . selves, one bit of data lost to the ages was current coinage.  If a returning player would shout out what they have, I'll just arbitrarily give myself 85% of that amount.

Thanks.

I was about to answer and then thought: Hey . . . maybe it would be fun not to reveal.  I'm sure we've all heard the refrain "just because you're a ___ doesn't mean you're the same as all other ____s; but the moment you hear that someone is a ____ everyone automatically knows all about them."

So, if there's no objection -- I think I'll keep it a secret (although some of the returning players may recall).  But if anyone objects, I'll tell.  And you can tell me privately if you prefer.

It's not a big deal; I'm just curious to see how it plays out.

I think it would be fun to learn what class or skills you have.  In my opinion classes can be not as fun.  Why if you wear plate armour and carry a long sword are you automatically a fighter?  Maybe you are a mage, and haven't figured out armour stops you from casting, or something.

Re: OOC - 5/21/2020

This isn't a criticism, just an observation: I think it is a byproduct of the rigidity of classes in 1st edition.

There is a game called Rolemaster (derisively called "Rollmaster" by some) that has extreme flexibility.  No two mages are the same.  You can't look at a third level rogue and say "your chance to pick a lock is __."  I enjoyed that game because you could come up with a character concept, and then pick the class that best showcased that concept's abilities and weaknesses.

I'm sure there are other systems like that; I'm familiar with a very limited universe of systems. :)

I always loved MERP / RM.  It's terrifying.

In D&D you say "Hey!  There are 5 Kobolds over there.  Let's run over and kill them!"

In RM you say "Oh no!  There are 5 Kobolds over there.  Let's wait until we can ambush them or kill them while they're asleep to minimize the risk of us getting maimed or killed in combat!"

It's AD&D.  We are in an endless mega-dungeon in which we have to escape with the most loot possible.  It's not really a forum for morality or realism, it's a test of player skill to survive, in my opinion.

It's up to Ruddley, though.  It's his game and if he says the distinction is important than I'll abide by that.

I have XP on my character sheet.  And I don't know that anyone ever leveled, so we may be in uncharted territory here.

Just an FYI...I play the character Cugel Winterbreath in two campaigns.  It gets a little confusing.  Why, you might ask would I have two characters with the same name?  well one was thought to be retired, so I created another, since I liked the name.  then the retired character, came out of retirement.
So long story short, I am going to slowly try to have him called, Winter, as in Winterbreath.    I think it might be easier for me to keep the characters apart.
If this offends anyone, or makes them uncomfortable, please deal with it.  ;)

Okay, a natural twenty will be max damage, but for the players only.

Consider if you, an extension?

If a spell caster is using a spell that delivers direct damage, they call roll a d20, as well. A twenty will be max damage for that spell as well, any other number (including one) will have no impact.

Thoughts?

Re: OOC - 5/21/2020

You beat me to it, Ruddley.

This game was on hiatus for a few years so I forgot that what this campaign was like.  It's easy to fall into bad habits and just skim through things so you can write your own post.  That works for about 80% of the games on RPOL.  This game isn't like that.  Ruddley holds you accountable and doesn't gloss over the details (for or against the players).

Plus, he's merciless? ruthless? Nah, he's an old school referee.  You don't see that very often these days.  It can be frustrating, but damn, it can be rewarding if you can survive and possibly even thrive.

Carry on, Ruddley, it'll take me a little longer to shake off the ring rust, but I'm on board.

I missed the wet bit altogether, I'll read more thoroughly going forward! Just for future reference though, if there's such a sudden change in what we perceive or have had described to us, like this lake (or a door, for example) I'd prefer to be prompted before wading in. We got lucky this time, but next time it could have a crocodile in it!

Re: OOC - 5/21/2020

I don't mean so much the clues, they're fine. But we didn't know there was a lake there from the clues.

I mean more the change from a floor to being waist-deep in water. I'd prefer something like "as you head north the torch lights up a large lake, the depth of which you cannot tell". That way I get a chance to not wade in. If the torchlight had discovered a door, you wouldn't have auto-walked me through it, a lake falls into a similar category of 'new terrain or features' I think :)

Else, I can add parts to all my posts that involve only going as far as the previous post's light fall, but it's definitely easier to give the party a prompt at such big new features.

Does someone want to be the official carrier of party treasure and inventory? Besides the obvious stuff we want to use (like a wand or a neat sword), I think it's tidier to have someone keep a separate treasure list for party stuff. I don't mind doing it, but someone should. Anyone disagree? Also, any takers for the job? Or, is someone already doing it?

I noticed that too; it isn't that way in the other games I'm in.  I don't know what a GM does to make that happen, but I like it.

Depending on how much power you have to arrange it, you could put House Rules and House Rules for Mages at the top and have new/current threads right under those.  But again, I don't know how much you can control these things.

However, all of this is just personal preference and I don't feel so strongly that I'd jump up and down screaming either way.

I have two options in regard to placement, pin to the top or don't pin. Honestly, I would like pin to the bottom as an option too.
Anything pinned jumps to the top if added to, so the more things I pin the more confusing it gets.

As to class specific house rules, I have those set so only players who have that class see them, in the hopes of being a little clearer.

I also have dozens that are set so only I can see them, so my view is sadly very cluttered. I suggested sub-folders to the admin a long while back, and I think I still have bruises.

Nice feature though, I can set filters to only see the categories I want. I don't use it often but it can be very useful... I think we all have that feature, even players.

True story, played a thief named Ben a few years back here on RPoL, and while he was very useful to the party, the one thing he fell short at was his backstabbing.

He would set up elaborate opportunities to backstab, and failed, time and again. I probably exaggerate, but it certainly felt like ALWAYS.

Anyway, we suffered a near TPK, Ben among those who went down, and we assembled a new party to rescue the bodies. When he was raised, I role-played that he had had an epiphany while in the land of the dead, and he switched gods.

Sure enough, his backstabs started to work. Role-play and random dice rolls coincided to make for a brilliant (to me) shift in the game.

I thought I had it pretty clear in the description that this was a nearly bottomless dungeon. The goal is an artifact-level magic item, or actually a trio of them.

The dungeon does have safe zones in it, here and there, but in essence you are not far off, it is combat heavy, and role-play light. I really wasn't shy about explaining that, either. If that is a problem, let me know, this is a good place to die.

Not sure that is strategically sound, gonna wait another day for you to get a chance to look at things, not that big of a rush.

What events do you have for Veteran's day? I'm jealous, I'm a veteran and I'm not even gonna leave the house.

Two answers to the first question here... he could try, because it has been more than a turn since his last attempt, however they are dead, not undead, so nothing would happen. Sorry if I was unclear.

As to Detect spells, you wouldn't know if they would work without trying. FYI though, Detect magic has a range of thirty feet, and seems unlikely to be far enough. Detect evil is one hundred and twenty feet.

This episode had Lon Chaney Jr. in it, the Wolfman to many of us who grew up watching black and white movies.

Here is a link, if you are interested, sorry I spoiled it...

It's only 26 minutes. Imagine a time when a half hour show actually had 26 minutes of show after the ads were removed. You'd be lucky to get that in an hour show today.

I am concerned we may have lost two more party members. Fingers crossed we have not.

Curious if the party would like to see a modification of the parameters of the game. Do people want this to become a more traditional dungeon, with a more normal outside area and such?

I don't have a firm feeling.  I know from the prior run there are settings inside that look and act like "normal outside areas," and as has been demonstrated there are opportunities to rest and recover.

The lost party members could be waiting for "New Year's Weekend" to end and may come back on their own Monday.

I like the idea of the Redoubt, but at this time I'm incapable of devoting the brain power to map and track it the way I would IRL.  That's on me, but I'm not in the best place in life right now.

I'd say one CLW on Winter for sure.

The last one on Winter, Storm or Murgar -- which may depend on whether Storm has any "paladin healing" left.

My reasoning is: These are people we expect most to be in harm's way.  (And I say that fully aware that my situation would remain very precarious.)

It might be wise to rest an extra full day so that another full round of healing can be done.

Thoughts?

Game-wise, Vanv is at 6 out of 18 HP.  I could use some healing, but if others are in greater need, that's fine.  Just let me know!

As the latest post stated, you are all now at full health after two nights rest.

House rules are, if memory serves, that a nights rest gains a person 1 HP per level. For dual or multi-class players, it will be 1 HP per their highest level, if/when they differ.

I would suggest that Winterbreath takes the scroll.

I would suggest that Ingwe wears the ring for now as it may keep her alive based on her low HPs.  Later on she can throw it back into the pot if some other item intrigues her.

Yeah, mapping would be nice.  I think we had someone doing that long ago, but that may have been before the restart.

I just remember there was a hallway we bypassed that had webs, suggesting spiders. Hence my suggestion. :)
