Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

In reply to EpicOne (msg # 260):

Gromley was ready, but he could get a line of sight of the creatures within the room via his projected senses. However, it could be destoryed very easily, so there was no need to tip off the foe right away.

Shall I peek within the room? They might notice...he mentally sent to his friends. Totally silent of course.

OOC-15:56, Today: Gromley Underhill rolled 33 using 1d20+14 with rolls of 19. Initiative. Passive perception-27

The heroes are faster than their lurking new "friends...."

Agon, Harald and Gromley all have the rough idea of where foes are on the map and can act accordingly.

Zog and Nemeroff have to make Active Perception checks of 25 or more, wait for the foes to appear or otherwise treat the foes as if they have total concealment.

Be sure to note the elevations and the terrain details!!!!!!

All PCs except Nemeroff are up!

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

Harald stared up at the cliff in front of the party.

"It shouldnae be any trouble tae climb but Ah'm a wee bit slow an' could be caught on ma way up.  If a couple o' you go first I should be able tae get up all right."

He looked at the others, seemingly a bit deprecating of their athleticism.

"Oan the ither hand, maybe Ah should jest stand here an' gie ye's a' a hand up."

Even swapping a standard for a move it would take Harald 2 turns to climb but with his assistance the others may be able to get up more quickly than normal.

In reply to EpicOne (msg # 266):

Once again, Gromley vanishes. However, he is not idle. He moves behind the wall, and focuses his senses to far away. 50 feet up along the tallest platform, the small set of glowing eyes appear. They float up another 50 feet, still short of the highest platform, but well able to see below it...

(OOC-Minor action-using Shaped consciousness to project senses to current location-10 spaces up.

Gromley using reactive stealth. Moves to current location. Shaped consciousness moves another 5 spaces up.

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

Agon pulled a long rope from his backpack and dimmed the magical light that lit their way through the caves. "Let's try and get into position before beginning a fight"he whispered. He then moved forward, and a few words from him sent the rope up the cliff, tying itself on the way.

Move Action : 6 squares to the base of the 30ft cliff
Minor Action : activate Rope of Climbing ( http://www.wizards.com/dndinsi...age=item&id=2354 ) - if it can't tie itself anywhere I won't use it.
Move Action : Climb up, unless someone else wants to go first.

Harald shinned up the rope like a monkey up a stick.  Jyst below the lip of the cliff he paused and waited for Zog to catch up.

"Are ye ready?" It was a throaty whisper and it betrayed the dwarf's eagerness to get stuck in.

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

Harald shimmies up the rope to nearly the top, followed by Zog.

As they do, suddenly, out of nowhere, a ten-foot tall figure emerges. Its skin is plated-red-chitin, its face is the picture of rage, and it wields a very long trident.

A War Devil think Gromley and Agon together telepathically at the same time.

It clearly awaits the newcomers, grinning.

Meanwhile, Gromley spots several other devils peering over the edge of the cliff higher-up. They, too, seem to be waiting for something.

Then, the something comes. Another devil, blue-skinned, appears on a higher plane looking down at the party. He almost contemptuously tosses a ball of lightning that explodes at a spot where it can catch the climbers. Both are blasted, the force of thunder tugging at their grip on the rope.

The higher-up devils disappear from everyone's sight, one reappearing moments later next to the blue devil. The big fellow seems content to sit tight and wait...

Agon is sure that another devil called the War Devil into tho plane just now, most likely the Storm Devil.

Roll Arcana checks for each kind of devil (there are three kinds) for details on them. Agon knows that they are War, Storm and Barbed devils.

War Devil is readying; you can't quite see what the Barbed devils did. The Storm devil moved up and hit both Harald and Zog with an area 2 burst for 14 lightning and thunder. Both need to make a save or be pushed a few squares off of the rope, falling. You can voluntarily fail the save if you are trained in Acrobatics and choose to fall instead.

Nemeroff is up, and I need those saves or Acrobatics rolls from Harald and Zog.

Out of nowhere a halfling falls from the ceiling. Invisible to those in the area, he pulls out his blunderbuss and shoots at the nearest foe. He's not sure if the shot hits, but he hears a big bang as the bullet hits something in the distance. He loads up a second bullet and shoots again in quick succession.

Minor: Sudden Bolt- deals 47 damage with Sneak Attack if it hits on 38 (40 w/ CA). He would also
be dazed UEMNT on the hit
Standard: Sly Flourish- deals 30 damage with a hit on 48.

Checking to make sure that Zog was off his legf and onto the rope, Harald launched himself up and over onto the cliff, past Newmeroff and ? some strange halfling with some kind of long trumpet.  Almost he stopped to ask but the sight of the devil drove the questions from his mind.  This was HIS job; keep such beasties away from HIS squishies.

Implacably he strode forward and confronted the spikey thing.  “Listen you” he thundered.  “It’s me ye’re dealin’ wi’ here.  Ye just stay there an’ let me finish ye aff.”

The eyes glowed, and the several of the devils suddenly floated in mid-air-and proceeded to smash into their friends. Possible knocking each other off their high perches...

14:26, Today: Gromley Underhill rolled 22 using 2d8+12 with rolls of 8,2. primary damage. Extra damage to BD 1, 3, and 4, and SD.

As a minor action, anyone still immobilized or slowed by the power can be slide 7 spaces, hitting another foe and knocking both prone. Also, barbed devils hitting each other or storm devils may take extra damage from the spikey bits.

Both BD 3, and SD will hit BD 1 and 4, knocking them prone. Then BD 3 and SD will be slide over the side, and dropped to the next lower level-unless they can make a saving throw to keep from falling.

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

Harald swings hard at the war devil, but his blow bounces off of the dark-red chitinous skin on the devil's mid-section.

It has no good defense, though, for Zog's blast of lightning, which leaves it with a burn-mark on its side. It roars in anger as ichor leaks out its side.

However, for reasons not clear to them, the devils start ramming into each other. One, in particular, flies around, crashing into his allies. He catches himself on the edge of the ledge that he is on before he falls, however.

The spiky ones teleport about. One of them teleports next to the edge and shouts something to the big devil. The war devil, for its part, stabs at Harald, gashing him a bit and dragging Harald around. He then utters a word of power and disappears, and appearing right next to Harald is the barbed devil, which also lashes out at Harald.

The war devil then utters a command and teleports back up to the ledge!

Barbed devils 1, 3 and 4 stand up and teleport to current position on the map (two move actions.)
Barbed devil 2 teleports to current position and readies an attack.

The War Devil hits Harald with its trident for 23 hp damage and drags Harald to current position on the map. Harald must make a saving throw or fall prone.

The War Devil then teleports as a move action to its current location, swapping places with BD2. BD2 takes its readied action, hitting Harald once of two times for 10 hp damage.

The War Devil then uses a minor action to give the barbed devil a move action, which it uses to teleport back up to the ledge.

Storm devil also readies an attack which is as yet unused.

All three immobilized devils make their saves.

(OOC-Moving projected consciousness to current position. It floats in the air, so it has to move 10' down from the top of the platform due to the range limits of Thought Guardian. It is still 50's above the SDs and the War Devil. Given its location, I don't think it can see the Storm devil, or visa versa. The spike devils and the war devil may notice it, but it is far overhead-and they may not. Especially because the Thought Guardian appears in their group and attacks them.

In addition-the thought Guardian in now in the open space between the SDs and the war devil. Any foe within 3 spaces of this area which moves-even by teleport, or attacks Gromley-will get an interrupt attack from the Thought Guardian.  If it hits it will do some damage and be dazed until the end of Gromley's next turn-possibly ending its action altogeather as being dazed limits you to one action.)

Agon stared at the devils capering along the edge of the cliff, making some quick mental calculations. "Consine of 73 degrees... compensate for cosmological torque... yes, that should do." He slapped his wrist, and in sympathy an immense wave of force hit the devils like a lead blanket, mashing them flat and sending rockslides down the cliffs.

He joined the others on the next ledge up in two very long steps. "I estimate we have, oh about 5.2 seconds before the evocation evaporates. Until then, they'll have no escape."
