Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

Harald waited just a few seconds to see if any more information drifted into his head but then moved swiftly onto the main arena.  He was just in time to hear the dragon charm Gromley and so didn’t hesitate.

“Ah’ll get ya, ye bastid!  You leave ma pals alane.”

With that he lowered his head, grasped the haft of his axe with whitened knuckles and charged.

His axe thudded home with such force that the dragon was jolted sideways.  The dwarf was even able to use the rebound to follow up and swing again.  This time the blow was so heavy that the dragon was pushed even further away AND knocked onto its side.

Minor: Try for more insight
Move: Move 5 squares
Standard: Charge with Minotaur Charge
Bennie reroll gets crit: 44 damage, and pushed 1 square; Harald can follow up and do secondary attack
Secondary 42 vs Fort.  Push Arantor 3 squares and knock prone.
Arantor is marked by Harald

I need both Harald and Nemeroff to make saving throws. If you fail, Harald, you need to un-do the movement that you may have done for your push power. If you succeed, everything stands as-is.

Also waiting for the Great and Terrible Bone Witch!

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

''So much abouts talkings then,'' mumbles the Great and Terrible Bone Witch to herself and starts to climb back up the cliff. Though it is not as much climbing per se as rather hopping gracefully from protrusion to protrusion, until she is on top of the cliff again. Not that anyone would see this, the goblin still being invisible and all.
Then she gnashes her teeth, driving herself into a fury, and lashes out viciously with her curved sword against the unsuspecting dragon.

MOVE     : walk adjacent to dragon, climbing the cliff

MINOR    : oath vs dragon
STANDARD : Aspect of Fury, CA from being invisible, hit AC 46, 44 dmg (8 of it radiant)

19:49, Today: Great and Terrible Bone Witch rolled 46 using 2d20+30, dropping the lowest dice only with rolls of 16,16. Aspect of Fury.

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

For a fleeting moment, Harald and Nemeroff get the sense that they would have been much worse off had they not taken a moment to step into the mist. Their attacks resound against Arantor's bones, causing cracks and singes.

The Great and Terrible Bone Witch learns the hard way. Her strike damages the undead lord of this realm spectacularly--the radiant power in her blow results in a crack of light and a shudder in Arantor. But the energy of her attack surges back and fills her arms with pain, as she remembers one time when she failed someone in need or near to her.

Arantor stands and turns its emotionless face on the Great and Terrible Bone Witch. Pure blackness pours out of its mouth, engulfing the goblin and causing her dark pain and a nasty, nasty chill.

GTBW gets the full potentcy of the plane of betrayal--she hits and does damage with all effects, but she takes half the damage she delivered in psychic damage (happily not including Arantor's vulnerability). Nemeroff and Harald have the "immunity of the mist"--they get a saving throw for the next 3 rounds to avoid that nasty side-effect.

Dragon breathes on GTBW, who takes 28 hp necrotic damage and takes 15 ongoing damage (save ends). He takes 5 hp from GTBW's Aspect of Fury.

Agon gets the benefit on an ongoing basis but, more importantly, can use skills to eliminate this effect for the party and actually harm Arantor from within the mist. You can use up to 3 Minor actions
per round (4 if you want to use an Action Point). You can use one skill up to twice per round; the third has to be a different skill.

Zog gets the same effect because of his mask--up to 3 skill checks per round, same deal as above.

Oh, and Gromley is not dominated. His Paragon Path or Epic Destiny (I forget which) makes him immune. But I made you look ;-) Gromley, be sure to give us a nice story bit on how your background saves you from domination.

And, no, the dragon is not even close to being bloodied. Just in case you were wondering.

Gromley, Agon and Zog are up!

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

Gromley stared at the boney thing-his eyes wide and unblinking. His expression did not change even though all this violence was going on around him. Then, a green gem grew out of his forehead. Being one of the Topaz Crusaders-the bulwark of fighters against those from the outer planes-allowed his mind to be an impregnable fortress.

He blinked, the gem vanished, and he casually took a look over the dragon.

"Ahem, I am afraid attacking my friends does not really work as part of my questions. Now-as you seem to want to force your way onto people-uselessly I may add-why don't you start with answering my previous Questions-and do nothing else until I say otherwise..."

His eyes glowed and he focused on the dragon.

GTBW, I forgot to mention that you have ongoing 15 cold damage (save ends) and I amended my post to add Aspect of Fury. Your Overwhelming Strike hits; you take 21 damage yourself from the hit.

Gromley, I need you to make an Arcana check. It may alter your turn a touch.

Zog and Agon are also up! Both of you can make Arcana checks like Gromley's for the same info that Gromley might get.

Zog notes the...interesting effect that his words have on Arantor.

He starts whispering, turning to face the undead as Gromley shoves it around.

"Why, father, why? Don't you remember the happy times? Don't you remember me as a small one?

"How could you do that to your own?"

His (her?) tone changes. "You should be ashamed. You should curl up in a corner and die. Vile, vile, vile."

Agon's body was hidden within the mist, but his mind raced across Arantor's realm, ferreting out the secrets that had worked their way into the very fabric of the place. He dry voice spoke in the minds of his allies. "Imrissa is imprisoned inside Arantor. I will work to free her."

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

Gromley's mind-controlled slide of Arantor into the mist has spectacular effect. The dragon seems to writhe in agony, almost as if something were trying to break OUT of him.

Zog's words in his psychic disguise have an even more dramatic effect. Something seems start fighting against Arantor from inside him, and he struggles to maintain his movement against it. The net effect is that the dragon moves more slowly and deliberately than it had moments before.

Agon sees this and tries to capitalize it. He utters words of power and weaves a pattern into the mist. Arantor is wrenched with agony and then slams its bony feet down. There is a fell look in its eye.

"I have contained her for now. You, vile liar, are going to die," it says, growling at not-Imrissa/Zog.

Gromley's critical hit and clever move of moving the dragon INTO the mist has two effects:

1. Arantor's defenses are all lowered by 1 for the entire encounter; and
2. The move does 40 hp damage to the dragon!

Zog's three actions combine for two effects:

1. It takes 28 psychic damage.
2. Its defenses and attacks are lowered by another 2

Finally, Agon's moves have rather striking effects: The dragon takes 89 hp psychic damage!!  Most importantly, though, the retaliatory effect on the PCs end--you can use attacks without fear of retribution. It also loses its second turn.

More good things will happen if you stay in the mist and use it to your advantage. Zog, you get the feeling that the mask will be a little less useful now.

Note that Arantor is still not bloodied.

Great and Terrible Bone Witch, Nemeroff and Harald are up! You can attack without fear of penalty.

Seeing that Great and Terrible Bone Witch had been getting the worse end of the deal in fighting the dragon, he moved over to help her, trying to team up in order to knock it to the ground.

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

The Great and Terrible Bone Witch has some knowledge about arcane and divine secrets, but she is not as stupid as to try to compete with Agon in that regard. And she certainly won't try to sweet-talk the dragon! However, she has some uncanny insight into the psyche at times, and she uses this to discern a leverage how the dracolich could be made to submit to his daughter. That would be only fitting after all!

Beside that noble endeavor the goblin keeps herself busy swinging her sword Night-terror at the dragon. Once, and twice, and even thrice! Splinters of bone fly in all directions.
The effort causes her to grow really warm and to shake off the dragon's cold, and she repays Nemeroff's inspiring words by having him benefit a bit from Ioun's wise guidance, causing him to hit with his attack despite his lack of a goblin's killing instinct.

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

The Great and Terrible Bone Witch gets an insight into the weaknesses in the body of the ancient undead, which she immediately communicates to her allies telepathically.

The undead lord of Monadhan flails madly under the barrage of attacks. It leaps to its feet. "You have faced your last day. You do not trifle with me," it bellows in a strange hiss-yell. It breathes its black energy at Nemeroff and Harald, but the pair are prepared for its shenanigans this time. They both duck out of the way, unharmed.

It then lifts up on its hind legs and slashes angriliy at all three foes around it. Its claws score hits on Nemeroff and the Great and Terrible Bone witch, leaving scratches that chill to the bone!

However, the party can now see that many major bones are broken and that the undead lord is beginning to falter

During all this, the goblin avenger and Harald spot something very odd on the periphery of the cavern--a shadowy form...

Harald, your mini wasn't adjacent to the dragon, so I moved you adjacent. If you wanted to be in a different adjacent square, just move your mini.

GTBW lowers its defenses and attack rolls by one more.

It misses both Nemeroff and Harald with its breath weapon. It uses an Action Point and gets an attack on everyone in range of its claws; it hits Nemeroff for 23 and GTBW for 25

Harald and GTBW see the other mini on the map. You all need to beat an active Perception of 35 on your turn to see what it is, or a passive or active Perception of 30 to target it, whatever it is.

All the PCs are up!

Zog, meanwhile, removes his mask. He still retains the form he saw in his mind.

"Your daughter will be avenged," says a woman's voice from the changeling's mouth. A surge of lightning crackles around her hand; this bolt is unlike anything the group has ever seen before, almost sculpted into a polyhedron. The "woman" points her hand and unleashes a blast that incinerates several of the undead dragon's ribs.

"Her" other hand then blazes bright and a twin blast of lightning strikes the dragon, blasting into its side and lighting half of the undead frame up with electricity.

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

As Zog launched the attack from the other hand, Nemeroff warped the area around the dragon and in the chaos, the foe becomes an easier target for everyone.

OOC: Seed of Chaos since Zog used an action point. Roll was a 4 and the dragon is granting combat advantage until the end of my next turn.

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

This mist was like a drug, and Agon's mind took in a flood of new knowledge as he hovered a few inches above the ground.  This place hungered for a master... someone with a mind worthy of it, not corroded by centuries of insanity and hatred.

[Minor x3] Skill Checks. 50, 37, 41 for arcana, history, religion.

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

The dragon-lord, writhing from Zog’s attack, is literally imploded by the mental powers of Agon and Gromley. He seems to shrink into nothing, and then explodes out—into a smaller version of himself. Or herself. The thing speaks with a female voice.

“I thank you, adventurers. Now that you have disposed of my father, I can rule this place and shape it for myself. You shall all be my first vassals! Or die, of course.”

It is clear that Imrissa was not much nicer than her dad, after all. Anyone with a Passive Insight of 10 or more realizes she’s completely evil.

Imrissa takes over for Arantor.

Harald and Nemeroff, I’m judging that your attacks are still free to use on Imrissa, if you want. If so, just say so and I’ll apply them.

GTBW, your move—if Nemeroff uses his attack on Imrissa, you get an MBA in addition to your turn.
