FYI, Nemeroff's MBA misses without a Benny, as does Gromley's attack. You can both use a Benny (or more) to re-roll as usuual. His defenses are high!

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

Agon walked calmly to the edge of the cliff and blasted Kas. He considered his options, the legendary vampire warrior was brutally tough and fast, but bloodsucking came with a cost. "Kas, you've won an all expenses paid vacation to the elemental plane of air!" Agon shouted. A swirling portal opened up beneath Kas' feet, and for long seconds he dropped through rays of sunlight into the heart of a massive thunderstorm, where he was lashed by lightning and battered by hail and thunder. The portal closed and then reopened, and Kas tumbled out much the worse for wear.

[Move] Shift to edge of cliff
[Minor] Magic Missile vs Kas
[Standard] Dimensional Cascade vs Kas
Attack +36 vs Will (?)
Kas is cast through dangerous planar locations, reappearing more or less immediately
22 Radiant damage, 22 Lightning damage

Gromley and Agon, a 40 will and a 36 will are both misses on Kas. Your target is 41, just to avoid further confusion. You can spend more Bennies if you want, GTBW. Agon, up to you if you want to Benny.

And GTBW is up, of course. You all should envy the Avenger now :-)

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

The goblin just cackles gleefully as the vampire tries to hit her und ducks under his swing, even going as far as snapping at his wrist and drawing a bit of blood!
Then she continues to fillet Kas, despite him being something of an undead demi god, and despite most of her companions being unable to hit him at all.

Basic cunning tells her though she might be making herself a target. Smiling grimly, the Great and Terrible Bone Witch vanishes in the zone of shadows she has summoned around the vampire and is not to be seen anymore. Actually no one can even tell anymore where she is at all.

OOC: Aspect of Fury is still active, so Kas did take 5 dmg when he started his turn beside me, and 5 dmg when he attacked me (if it was a melee attack).

IMMEDIATE: Goblin Tactics as Kas misses me, teleport 3 (heck, staying where I am)
           use Wrist Biter, 11 dmg
NO ACTION: regenerate 0
MINOR    : Refire the Forge (gain hp if I hit, get free attack when bloodied or dropped)
STANDARD : Overwhelming Strike vs Kas, crit, 110 radiant dmg, regain 7 hp
           teleport 1 SE
MOVE     : shift/teleport 2E (opposite of Nem), hide with Stealth 49 (rolling twice for assassin's cloak)

08:07, Today: Great and Terrible Bone Witch rolled 49 using 2d20+33, dropping the lowest dice only with rolls of 16,14. Stealth.
08:07, Today: Great and Terrible Bone Witch rolled 94,15,1 using 5d12+53,3d8,1d6 with rolls of 5,11,11,11,3,3,6,6,1. crit dmg.
08:06, Today: Great and Terrible Bone Witch rolled 50 using 2d20+30, dropping the lowest dice only with rolls of 20,4. Overwhelming Strike w/CA.
08:05, Today: Great and Terrible Bone Witch rolled 11 using 3d4+3 with rolls of 2,2,4. Wrist Biter.

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

Kas looks positively shocked at the beating he’s taking by the party, now bleeding in several spots. “What ARE you creatures?” he snarls. In particular, when hit by the Great and Terrible Bone Witch’s attack, strikes Nemeroff quickly before flying away from the melee-types, risking blows from them.

“But you cannot truly slay me today, fools. I will return for my sword, for it cannot really leave me behind. This place will betray you—as will your party!”

He points at Nemeroff, who is filled with a consuming hatred of the Great and Terrible Bone Witch!

He then moves up to the two casters, Agon and Zog, and with a flurry of blows slices the both of them.

“I will see you all die!” he roars. Optimistic, perhaps, but defiant!

Firstly, very cool stuff. You’re beating up a level 26 solo! :-)

Secondly, GTBW, noted the 10 damage from your encounter effect. Thanks!

I need Harald, Nemeroff and GTBW to make OAs as he flies away as an Immediate Reaction to GTBW’s attack.

He regenerates,  then does a ranged attack minor action on Nemeroff—Nemeroff is Dominated (save ends) and will charge GTBW on his next turn. Nemeroff can't use his Aegis while dominated.

He then moves up to Agon and Zog and attacks, hitting Zog for 15 hp, and then using an Action Point to attack again, hitting Agon for 24 hp.

ALL PCS are up! Nemeroff you are dominated, remember, unless someone can help you get around that.

Gromley focused his energies-and once again blasts the vampire lord with his powers. Even as he escapes the initial attack from the first astral lady he created, another strikes him again.

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

No one runs from the Great and Terrible Bone Witch and lives. Actually that is at the core of all those little tales about her meant to scare children. Perhaps Kas should have listened to some of those...
Anyway, Night-terror cuts across his legs, severing a major vein in a strike which would probably have killed a mortal. Then the goblin follows him suit up the cliff, darting up like a nimble kobold of death, and strikes at the vampire king again and again.

No one runs from the Great and Terrible Bone Witch and lives. Children can tell you that.

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

Transfixed by the Thought Guardian, battered by Harald's blow, harried by Agon's magic missile and then lit up like a lightning storm by Zog, Kas reels and then succumbs to an overwhelming strike from the Great and Terrible Bone Witch. With a snarl and a hiss, Kas melts away into mist and dissipates into a nearby crack, defeated.

None too soon, this is, for the ground itself seems to shudder. The death of the undead lord of Monadhan may have unfortunate effects upon the plane itself!

You win! Now you have to get out of the plane in time before it collapses upon itself, as Agon and Gromley will tell you that it is likely to do.

What do you do?

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

The party does a quick search for magic, that being the fastest way to find treasure, and makes their way to the cavern on the southeastern side of the great chamber. There is a fairly impressive hoard there, which is made all the more convenient by the presence of three bags of holding to put it all in. Apparently Arantor was ready to move his treasure rather quickly.

In practical terms, you find 2100 pp, 5000 gp worth of residuum, a potion of recovery, a belt of the witch king, a ring of action reversal, a golden ring of toros, a phoenix helm, a modron toy, an amulet of seduction +5, a pair of many-fingered gloves, and an assassin's cloak +5.

Finally, the Sword of Kas:

The Sword of Kas was created by Vecna for his lieutenant. Kas rewarded his former master by using it to cut off Vecna’s hand and gouge out his eye. The Sword offers great power to any who grasp it, but wielders end up betraying what they love most.
The Sword of Kas is a +5 vicious short sword with the following properties and powers.
Weapon: short sword
Enhancement: +5 attack rolls and damage rolls
Critical: +5d12 damage.
Property: The Sword of Kas deals 2d10 extra damage against
allies and former allies.
Property: Whenever an attack with the Sword of Kas reduces
a target to 0 hit points or fewer, you gain concealment until
the end of your next turn.
Property: If you attack Vecna, a servant of Vecna, a cultist
of Vecna, or any other creature working directly to serve
Vecna’s ends, you deal 5 extra damage on a hit.
Property: When you take the total defense action or use your
second wind, you gain a +5 item bonus to all defenses until the start of your next turn.

And, of course, it's intelligent. If you choose to wield it, you find out the ramifications of that soon.

The party then makes its way post-haste to the western side of the chamber. Agon quickly works things out and you activate the lightning-framed portal on the west wall. Beyond lies Vaerothim and the culmination of your quest.

The portal holds a wavering, indistinct image of a rocky knoll surrounded by the boughs of a great forest. Three leafless trees stand upon the knoll. Crackling energy surges about the portal as the barriers between the planes is ripped asunder. The smell of burning fills the air as lightning arcing from the portal wreathes the Sword of Kas in a blinding halo of light that fades and dissipates after a few moments.

Continued soon in Chapter 2!

The goblin is already exchanging her old and shabby robe against the more splendid one lying on the pile of treaure. ''Oooh.''
She is also fascinated by a pair of odd-fingered gloves and puts them on, wiggling her fingers and watching them.
Great and Terrible Bone Witch also briefly considers claiming the vampire's sword, but his parting words about that has been clear enough. And besides, she is happy enough with Night-terror.

''Anyways, I thinks we slays none todays. Vampires and dragons liches always have ways to crawls back. Lets departs!''

She heads for the gate.
