"So who is this Arantor" whispered Harald to the others.  "Should we pay to find out or does anyone already know?"

Zog leans in to talk with Harald. "Arantor is the creator and ruler of this place. Our patron told us that when we came. Let's give her a generous tip. Would one of you be wiling to give her five hundred gold? I am willing to haggle a better per-question price with that sum. I do not carry such money personally."

Harald winced at the thought of he himself having to lash the cash out and so tried to temporize.

"Aye!  I knew that Arantor wiz the boss here - but what is he?  A giant?  A demon? a dragon?  What?"

He turned to the others.  "Does naebody know who or what this Arantor is?  An' if no', should we be payin' this auld wuman tae get the answer?"

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

Arcana checks would be appropriate here. Agon will likely crush this.

After you make your rolls, I'll be dropping the new player in on you. Almost literally.

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

Agon nodded at the woman's answer, unsurprised, and frowned at Zog's whispers.

"This was our most sought-after answer," the wizard spoke up, "though I wonder if the portal requires a special activation - no one is supposed to be able to leave this land after all" he mused.

   "As for Arantor..."

Agon shares that Arantor is known to be a dracolich--a magical beast of the dragon and undead subtypes. He is thought to be mad, and has been known to be able to destroy many foes at once and control others.

"... a formidable threat, as you can imagine" Agon said, finishing his exposé. He was apparently done with questions for now, and stepped back to let someone else consult with the seeress.

Rubbing his short beard, the wizard silently pondered the group's next move.

"A dracolich, eh!  Now that's whit Ah call a decent opponent" said Harald.

"Well then missus.  Ah wonder if you;d be so kind as tae tell us where this lair o; his can be found?"

With obvious reluctance he fumbled 40 gold from his pouch and handed it over.

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

She takes the money greedily and gives the group pretty solid directions on how to get to the lair of Arantor.

"And, because you're good customers, I will do a bit extra for you. Oh, if only I had done the extra little bit for Zerrol. He wasn't really the father, you know...and we didn't know he would kill himself over it..." He sobs for a minute, wracked with remorse for the betrayal that clearly led her to be banished here.

She leans over her fire. "To exit through this portal, you must have the Key of Monadhan."

Agon has heard of this key--it is the object that, at a given point of time, best represents the betrayal of Monadhan best.

She leans in and starts chanting. "And the current key is....is..."

With a CRASH, a gnome appears out of nowhere, landing on the old seer woman's makeshift bed. She shrieks in indignation!

The gnome is clearly not some insignificant little gnome, however...

Gromley, do introduce yourself and your familiar. Everyone else, react :-)

In reply to EpicOne (msg # 98):

The gnome groaned, and lay there for a second. A glowing orb and a floating disk moved down, slowly and carefully, to hover next to him.

"Well, that was was different...little gift for the lady, huh?" The orb said in a voice that sounds like it is restraining laughter.

"Quiet, Baldrick!" The Gnome yells at the orb. He slowly raises himself up on his elbows, rubbing his back. "You...lot. You-over there. I believe I am suppose to be finding you. Granted, I imagined taking you all out for a meal and discussing it there rather than...this..."

He slowly gets up, and the floating disk moves under him-where a cushioned seat seems to be located. He turns to the seeress, and bows-a glowing rose appears in his hand and floats its way over to her. "Dear lady, please forgive this most unwelcome intrusion into your bed. Normally I only land on beautiful women's beds when invited. Not today I fear, a perfect record now ruined..."

The noisy entrance broke Agon out of his reverie. The newcomer's voice seemed familiar, and when he saw the orb and disk... "You !" he called in surprise.

Agon's spider familiar left his shoulder in a blink, appearing an instant later on the woman's desk and jumped around as if to get the talking orb's attention.

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

Gromley raises an eyebrow at the hammer which nearly caved his head in. He gently pushes it away, and smiles at its dwarf wielder. "Please sir, I am a simple gnome diplomat-what possible threat could I pose to well-armed warriors and mages like yourselves?"

He grinned as he saw Agon. "Ah yes! Agon of the Timeless Sanctuary! I remember you well. I still believe a cosmic library like yours could use a bar and dancing girls. How else to entertain your patrons? Could you please convince your dwarvish friend here I need my head where it currently is?"

Then the entire party heard a voice in their minds. Besides, I am fairly sure our mutual employer Bahamut would not be happy to hear my death came not due to Tiamat, but from my own would-be allies...

"Yes, I remember your... suggestions" Agon smiled. "Well met, Gromley. I am sure Harald will be more interested in your tale than your head, as I am. You interrupted the seeress though, and I would like to hear what she was about to say about a certain key. Proper introductions will have to wait, I'm afraid." For a more private setting, he thought.

The seeress clears her throat. "You will wish that I had not told you, I fear. For the Key of Monadhan is now the Sword of Kas."

Religion or History checks apply here, or Arcana if you lack those.

I rolled for both skills. If only one check applies, it's the first one - religion.

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

Kas the Bloody-Handed was the most trusted lieutenant of the despotic arch-lich Vecna, and wielder of the Sword of Kas. A vampire of great power, he fed on many in service of the mad lich-despot. After many years of loyal service to Vecna, Kas eventually betrayed his master. It is said that the sword itself whispered to Kas, convincing him to slay his master and usurp his power. The battle destroyed Vecna's Rotting Tower, and cost the lich his left hand and eye. None truly knew where Kas was, but there is little doubt based on this old woman's words that Kas himself must be here, if his sword is.

The Sword of Kas was created by Vecna for his lieutenant. Kas rewarded his former master by using it to cut off Vecna’s hand and gouge out his eye. The Sword offers great power to any who grasp it, but wielders end up betraying what they love most.

Re: Chapter 1: The Land of Betrayal

As Agon recounts this, Zog winces. "I have met Vecna, and with great pain resulting. I would not be delighted to have to treat with one of his minions, albeit a traitorous one. However, that seems to be our best hope for exiting this place, so I suppose we should find him and secure the sword."

He turns back to the newcomer gnome. "I have no objection to having you accompany us if what you shared is true. We can discuss further away from prying ears, I think. I will not speak for my allies in this, though."

In reply to Zog the Faceless (msg # 112):

Gromley gestured forward, and his floating disk carried him on. "Again, my apologies for the fall, dear lady. While we speak of the ghoulish undead, I do believe we will need some food and drink to make such an unpleasant topic much more palatable. Oh, and dancing girls. I am going to win over on this one Agon, sooner or later..." He chuckled.

The glowing orb orbited around the other spider familiar, almost as if dancing with it. "Baldrick! Leave that alone and move along!" Gromley shouted.

"Fine...fine..." The orb grumbled, and proceeded to stay close to the floating gnome.
