Re: Chapter 4: Once Loyal

Lightning flared like momentary teeth between the stalagmites and the ground, striking Morgol in several places.  Agon followed up with rapid blasts of force, hoping to finish the hydra as quickly as possible.  Sheer destruction under these circumstances was not his forte, but he'd find a way.

[Standard] Chain Lightning
Attack +45 vs Reflex, 35 damage
[Minor] Wizard's Fury Magic Missile, 18 damage
[Minor] Quickened Magic Missile, 18 damage

Re: Chapter 4: Once Loyal

This blast makes the hydra roar. It roars again when it discovers that it is free to move. Moving as if it were tearing itself away from a chain, it charges Harald! It bites the warrior, bruising him,  and then unleashes a hellacious flurry of blows. Happily, Harald is ready for this and blocks all but one!

It was readied to charge at the end of Agon's turn if there was a target in range, which there is. Hits comfortably (AC 49) for 25 untyped and 5 radiant damage, total of 30. It then spends an action point to Hydra Fury attack. Happily for Harald, it only takes 6 attacks this round. Harald is officially a lucky fellow. He is missed by 5 of 6 attacks (the one hit on AC 42) and only takes 24 untyped and 4 radiant from the one hit for 28 more hp. It made its save vs. -2 to attacks.

Sonliin is up!

WE WILL DO STRICT INITIATIVE ORDER FOR THIS FIGHT because of the growing-new-heads thing. DO NOT post out of turn. Wait for me to call your name in initiative.

Re: Chapter 4: Once Loyal

Sonliin rounded the corner and seeing the creature, shook his head. "Time for you to join your ancestors, DEAD!" he said as sparks started to crackle around him. Waiving his hand, the gargantuan was dragged across the floor to Sonliin and Harald's awaiting weapons. A burst of lightning erupted across the hydra.

Re: Chapter 4: Once Loyal

Seeing as the Hydra seemed to be focused on his companions, Darratheir took advantage of this opportunity and he climbed on Morgol's back in a single jump, evading a whiplash from its tail and sinking the Arrow of Fate as deep as he could in one of the creature's neck. After this devastating blow, he jumped back on the ground, ready to face the Hydra's wrath.

Move action: To position
Standard action: Berseker's Shout - Crit! Morgol takes 184 damage and is dazed UEoNT. It also takes a -5 penalty to attack rolls UEoDarraNT.

Re: Chapter 4: Once Loyal

The great beast takes a blast of light from Martha, a pair of solid hits from Harald and a couple of shots to the head from Agon's magic missiles. The magic missiles destroy another head. A moment later, from its two dead heads spring six more heads, giving it a total of eleven!

The beast lashes out at the nearest enemy it can detect with a devastating barrage of attacks. It bites Sonliin repeatedly, every hit accompanied by a blast of light until that which was Sonliin is now a charred corpse!

It's at maximum number of heads--eleven. It only has 10 attacks this round, so it attacks a random adjacent target, which turns out to be Sonliin. Two hits and two crits for 30 (22 normal + 8 radiant), 25 (22 normal + 3 radiant), 34 (26 normal + 8 radiant) and 34 (26 normal + 8 radiant) for a total of 123 hp. Sonliin is bloodied and has lost 111 hp total.

Then it spends an Action Point and keeps attacking Sonliin. It hits four more times and crits twice for 24 (17 normal +7 radiant), 33 (25 normal + 8 radiant), 25 (19 normal + 6 radiant), 20 (18 normal + 2 radiant), 34 and 34 hp. That's 168 hp. Suffice it to say that Sonliin is dead.

Morgol also makes his save vs. being blind. It is now just blind from Martha's effect.

Sonliin is up! Yes, I'm aware he's dead. He has a trick up his sleeve.

Re: Chapter 4: Once Loyal

Sonliin's body crumpled with a thud as the blackened and torn armor hit the floor of the cave, a smoking corpse that was once the servant of Ioun, slain by the foul hydra's onslaught. Slowly, the tendrils of smoke faded away as a hush covered the battlefield, broken in places from the roar by Morgol, gloating in his slaughter.

As the cries of anguish erupted from his companions lips, a faint wisp of bronze colored smoke started from the slain paladin's chest. At first small and faint, then growing in size to fill the cave as crackles of lightning formed in the center of what appeared to be a large dust devil. As the tempo of the mist rapidly accelerated, it started to compact itself into the form of a large bronze colored egg along its axis, with electricity pulsing like a heartbeat in its center, a heavy scent of ozone filling the cave.

Once in the form of a transparent egg, it stopped spinning but then begin to expand and contract, the electricity began to create thunder as the pulse started taking on a physical manifestation, transforming the center into an embryo. At first, it had little form but here and there, small details could be picked out. First the appendages, claws on its arms and legs. Then slowly a pair of wings protruded from its back along with a tail, paper thin scales covering the body. The arms and legs tucked in as the wings and tail wrapped itself to provide protection.

As the egg grew in size, the wings parted to reveal a baby bronze dragon. It started to chip at the inside of its shell, wanting out. A few moments later, it was free, poking its head out, the cries of birth and life echoing through the cavern. Once free. it rapidly grew to become a large bronze dragon. It did not appear to a normal dragon as its form was both mist and not on this plane.

"Mother, where are you? Father where are you? Tagamut is back. Oh, now I remember, you were slain. The Dragon Queen slew the two of you as you tried to protect us. Grandfather was able to hide us but not you." The bronze dragon said. Sniffing the air, it turned his full fury towards Morgol, "You, you had a part to play in my Grandfather's disappearance! Feel the wraith of a true dragon, perverted spawn of Tiamat!" The spirit of Tagamat bellowed as it assaulted the hydra a blast of thunder shattering the stillness.

Re: Chapter 4: Once Loyal

Darratheir couldn't react in time to save Sonliin and before he could even make a single move to avenge his companion, he had reappeared in the form of a Bronze Dragon. Shaking his head in confusion, he still managed to kept himself focused on the Hydra. Eleven heads was a large number so he should deal with them before asking question to Sonliin as an intense rage was feeling him.

He then jumped once again on Morgol's back to unleash all this rage, hammering him with three attacks, one of them being able to find a critical spot behind one of the neck. "NEVER TRY TO KILL ONE OF MY COMPANION AGAIN!" he yeld in fury. "EVER!"

Stone of Tempest Rage - Critical Hit (53 vs AC) for 181 thunder damage and Morgol falls prone. Gain free MBA from Rampage - Hit (41 vs AC) for 33 damage. Frightening Strike (From Unexpected Clarity) - Hit (53 vs AC) for 41 damage and Morgol takes a -5 penalty to attack roll UEoDarraNT.

Re: Chapter 4: Once Loyal

As the newly-reborn dragon springs from the wrecked corpse of Sonliin, Darratheir drives his blade deep into the beast's midsection. It shudders, roars from eleven heads, and then slumps to the ground. It then dissolves rapidly into a fine mist....

Zog walks up to the former Sonliin and looks cautiously at it. "Are you...what are you, exactly? What happened to Sonliin?

No dibs on magic items.

Re: Chapter 4: Once Loyal

Tigamut looked over the fading mist that was the remnants of Morgol with a wistful look before speaking.

"Long ago, deep in the primordial soup that was chaos, before Dragons started their decline due to the ravages of man, I became enraptured with an air sylph called Feila and wanting to spend time with her, I transformed myself so that I could lay with her. Out of that union came the Stormborn genasi." Tagamut said

"Other dragons did the same, creating the many different types of Genasi. Since the Genasi are more elemental than man, they did not develop into Dragonborn like the other unions. Brains and Brawn are the sign of a true dragon, not those other dragons that serve Tiamat. So it is with many of the Stormborn, Sonliin can trace his linage directly back to me. It is not his time yet to return to the winds as I still have need of him. Deal with Tiamat and avenge my Grandfather!" The dragon said.

The air started to crackle once again as the dragon started to shrink, shimmering blue as it compressed into a humanoid form. The wings and tail wrapped around the figure, merging with the scales to become armor. After a moment, Sonliin had returned, looking like he had not seen battle.

"What happened?" Sonliin asked as he surveyed the battlefield.

In reply to Sonliin (msg # 563):

"You don't remember?" Gromley said, wondering if he could 'unlock' those memories for his friend...or if he even should. "Well, lets just say you never fail to surprise us." He grinned at Sonliin, and pats him on the back. "You had us all worried for a moment."

Re: Chapter 4: Once Loyal

As Morgol fell to the ground and started dissolve, Darratheir jumped back next to the Bronze dragon. Looking at it like if it was the first time he was seeing a dragon, he nodded the head. But before he could talk to him, the dragon disappeared and Sonliin was back.

"You fought well, Sonliin. And we killed this hydra with your help."

Re: Chapter 4: Once Loyal

"Wow, Sonny.  That wiz...impressive."

Harald stalked around his companion, eyeing him up and down.  "Kin ye dae that at will, or dae ye need tae take a wheen o' damage first."

Suddenly he whirled around.  As he walked he had noticed something.  "Are they Boots o' Speed?" he yelled, diving for the boots lying amidst the treasure pile.

He did not wait for an answer, dropping to the ground and quickly changing his footwear.  He was about to throw away his old boots when he hesitated and placed them in his pack instead.

"They may no' be magic but they are gey comfy" he said.

Re: Chapter 4: Once Loyal

Zog claps Sonliin on the back. "You took a great deal of damage from the hydra. By all accounts, you look to have died. Then you were--transformed into a brass dragon named Tigamut. He then restored you to your proper self. Any questions?" The face of Zog shifted back from a dwarf's face to his normal human-appearing visage to have this discussion.

Agon saluted the fading mist. He felt secure, learning one of the secrets of Morgol the Undying. The hydra would be back to trouble the next generation of heroes.

"We were legendary." The archmage stated, simply.

Martha has been rendered speechless - a rare occurrence. She shakes her head in disbelief.

'Tigamut told us he is the creator of your kind. He returned you here - from 'the winds' - so that you could defeat Tiamat and complete this quest.'
