Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

Agon strode forward. He lifted his staff, and lightning crackled across the battlefield, laying waste to the efreeti guards. Agon waved his staff at the dragon in challenge. "We serve Bahamut. Let us see who is worthy of the power of this shrine.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

Agon leave smoking piles of ash where the efreet once stood.

The white dragon roars, snorting smoke. He leaps into the air and soars toward Agon; as he gets near Agon, he breathes white flame at Agon and both freezes and burns the wizard. The wizard falls backwards, his legs frozen together and his eyes frozen shut.

The minions die. W double moves and then uses an AP to hit Agon (reflex 46) for 41 cold and fire damage; Agon is also knocked prone and blinded (save ends both).

Harald, Sonliin and Darratheir are up!

Map: https://docs.google.com/drawin...Q50-wFOAK6P78Lk/edit

Terrain Features:
Ceiling: 30 feet high.
Illumination: The City of Brass is brightly lit day and night.
Rubble These areas of loose scree are difficult terrain. A creature that runs, charges, or makes a double move through rubble must make a DC 20 Acrobatics check or fall prone.
Fire Pool: The shrine of Imix at the heart of the Eternal Flame Pavilion is surrounded by onyx-walled pools of pure elemental fire. The largest of these pools is the center of Tiamat’s corrupt rituals and is pro- tected by a dome of magical force. The only entrance into the fire pool is by way of the firefall that descends into the fire whirlpool (see below).
The roiling elemental fire of the pool is interrupted by a series of onyx pillars (see below). Any creature that starts its turn in the air above the fire pool must make a DC 28 Endurance check (a free action) or take 3d8+10 fire damage. Any creature that enters or starts its turn within the fire pool takes 4d8+10 fire damage. The protective dome of magical force that surrounds the fire pool blocks movement, line of effect, and magic (including teleportation effects). Creatures can enter the fire pool only by way of the smaller whirlpool and the firefall; see below.
Onyx Pillar Rough-topped pillars of magical onyx thrust up 5 feet above the roiling surface of
the fire pool, including one large pillar that is the centerpiece of Tiamat’s rituals. A creature standing on an onyx pillar is partially protected from the crip- pling heat of the fire pool. Any creature that starts its turn on or above an onyx pillar must make a DC 28 Endurance check (a free action) or take 2d8 + 5 fire damage.
Firefall Raw elemental fire surges like a waterfall down from the fire pool. The firefall is the only access from the open whirlpool to the warded fire pool. The 20-foot-high firefall can be ascended by flying or with a DC 33 Athletics check. A creature that flies up the firefall takes 3d8 + 10 fire damage. A creature that ascends the firefall with an Athletics check takes 4d8 + 10 fire damage.
Fire Whirlpool: Where the flow of fire courses down from the larger fire pool, it creates an elemental vortex. The smooth onyx walls of the whirlpool are 10 feet high and can be climbed with a DC 20 Athletics check. A creature that ends its turn on the onyx wall takes 2d6 + 8 fire damage.
Any creature that enters or starts its turn in the whirlpool takes 3d8 + 10 fire damage and is dazed until the start of its next turn. A creature that moves 1 square into the whirlpool must make a DC 19 Acro- batics or Athletics check (a standard action) to grab the edge and clamber onto the wall. A creature that fails its check or moves more than 1 square into the whirlpool is caught up  in the vortex. A creature must make a DC 28 Acrobatics or Athletics check (a standard action) to escape the vortex. One creature on the wall can aid this check. On a creature’s third failed check to escape the vortex, it is pulled down within the elemental maelstrom and irrevocably destroyed.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

Sonliin joined the others as they started to attack the White Dragon. Moving forward past Agon, the Paladin-Wizard pointed his warhammer at the beast. "You will feel the pain that you have inflicted on this city." he said, as a ray of light helped illuminate the dragon, letting it know who it was dealing with in battle. The small beam of light erupted into a massive spray of colors that enveloped the wyrm, causing it pain.

With a blink of the eye, Sonliin then appeared in front of it as he smashed down his weapon.

quote:
“Don’t bunch up!”

Harald heard the instruction and decided to start with a throw of his hammer; maybe he could move in later.  He darted forward into range and flung his hammer...straight at the dragon’s head!

“Yes!  Gotcha, ya bastid!  How d’ye like them apples?”

Harald barely restrained himself from performing a little dance of delight.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

One might question what the dragon was expecting, but it's clear it wasn't expecting this barrage of attacks from the party. It reels from the prismatic spray as the others harm it...

As above; it's a mess, in a nutshell.

Zog keeps his distance, taking Agon's warning very seriously; he opens up with his left hand, blasting the thing hard, and then traces another symobl into the air with his right hand before blasting through it, further wounding the reeling dragon. He then offhandedly blasts it one more time.

Move onto the grid. Standard: Elemental Bolt + Elemental Escalation, hitting for 66 lightning. AP: Elemental Bolt + Learned Boost, hits for 68 lightning. Then Quickened Spellcasting to hit it with Elemental Bolt again for 49 lightning. W is vulnerable 3 to my elemental attacks until EOMNT. Total of 203 hp lightning.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

The dragon's fire breath was the first attack in quite a while to penetrate the wizard's formidable defenses. A croaked cry served to gather enough magic to break him free of the cocoon of ice.  Now on the fare side of the battlefield, a rime encrusted Agon uncurled his limbs.

"Cold. How crude. Let me show you how a master mage restrains his foes!"

Bands of force wrapped the dragon, visible as impossible mirror and warpings of the space around the dragon.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

The overwhelmed dragon takes this crushing attack from Agon, beginning to bleed from the nose. Instinctively, it breathes is bizarre white-flame breath again, wounding Agon and again blocking his eyes with a layer of ice. From his prone position, Agon still wounds the thing further with his supernatural bolts of energy.

The dragon is, however, otherwise unable to further react..

Agon’s first attack bloodies it. As a FREE action, it uses Bloodied Breath and hits Agon (Reflex 44) for 51 cold and fire and Agon is blinded and knocked prone (save ends both). Agon is bloodied. This does not affect Agon’s second action, which auto-hits anyway.

It made its save against the ongoing 15 fire, the ongoing 20 untyped and being slowed; it failed its saves against the Stunned and ongoing 10/prone.

Harald, Sonliin are up!

Agon, please roll a saving throw vs. blind and prone representing the end of your turn.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

A wave of bright light struck the dragon as it attacked Agon rather than the stalwart paladin. Finding that the foe was still standing, Sonliin started to crackle as bolts of lightning flickered around him, with peels thunder echoing through the air. Pointing his warhammer towards the dragon, a blast of thunder flashed over the foe.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

Though its breath attack was instinctive, it still violated Sonliin's challenge, so it is blasted by light, then by thunder as the massive creature takes the full brunt of his thunderwave. Harald then hits the thing hard, wounding it!

Yep, Sonliin's mark matters. I'm assuming Harald's mark now takes over.

Darratheir, Gromley, Zog are up!

Agon blasts the beast to good effect. It is reeling, staggering in place. It has certainly never experienced this level of pain in its life, which seems to invigorate it.

Agon does 3 extra lightning damage as the dragon has vulnerable 3 lightning from Zog.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

Just as Harald swung his axe at the dragon, an impenetrable cloud of mist suddenly appeared, totally obscuring the creature.  The dwarf howled in rage and frustration, screaming to the heavens.

“Tymora aid me!  Roll the dice once more and lend me your power and your strength!”

For a second it looked as if nothing had happened and then something...  It was like the world stood still for a second, shivered and then moved on. The axe swung, almost as if by itself, slicing through the mist and into the flank of the bloodied dragon,  It bit home through hide and bone, blood showering out, drenching the warrior from head to foot.
