Chapter 6--The Astral Fields

A month has passed since the party's victory with Bahamut at the City of Brass. The cosmic war with Tiamat has picked up to an unprecedented degree. On the Material Plane, in the Ethereal, in the Feywild and Shadowfell, across various outer planes, the servants and allies of Bahamut have been doing battle with the forces and allies of Tiamat.

You have seen a bit of action here or there, but Bahamut has held you back--until now. From a base on the plane of Celestia, you have been training and waiting, but now the Platinum Dragon, in his humanoid form, has approached you.

"Friends, I have word that an elite squad of devils marches on a place known as the Elder Gate on the Astral Plane. They seek to enter it to find a secret demi-plane in which I have several ancient sages working to resolve a mystery that will help us end the war. Understandably, the forces of Tiamat seek to see this prevented.

"As is my purvey, I can see the time and place of their coming. I would have you there for me to repel them, if you would.

"The battleground is a narrow space in the astral plane, constrained by astral walls that Agon can assist in erecting. The foes will have to move through this space and get past you to get to the portal, which is only fifteen feet wide.

"Will you accept this mission? And what questions do you have?"

Here's the battle map for the area--150' wide, with the portal on the north side of it. The left and right borders are walls of astral force--resist 50 all, AC 2, 1000 hp per square. Agon can also repair any square back to full with a move action. So, nobody's likely to come that way, at least initially.

You can set up defenses or otherwise prepare the space with about six hours' notice. Assuming you accept, what do you want to do to prepare?

For weeks now, Agon had supported the battle from far behind the lines, working the scrying pools and opening planar portals for other warriors of Bahamut.  But he itched to get back into the fight.

"My lord, we are at your command.  We will hold this demi-plane against all enemies!"

After the fight against Nassimi, Darratheir felt useless in this war. He is not the kind to plan things and help with strategy. He is a Dragonborn of action and only live for that so when Bahamut finally offered them to take part in a new fight, he was eager to move.

"Sure. The Arrow of Fate and I will defeat every enemies of yours. Command and I will execute."

Zog bows in Bahamut's direction. "You have my aid."

To his companions, he nods. "Just don't prevent all straight lines for me. My best attacks are simple lightning bolts to a couple of targets. I can blast the life out of a creature that's engaged with Harald or Darratheir, for example."

The party prepares, setting up in front of the portal that Bahamut has asked them to protect. The party ends up waiting for what feels like a very long time over an hour. Then, suddenly, the enemies start appearing. The first is a line of what appears to be a group of horribly seared humanoids that line up and begin marching toward you…

Roll initiative! If you roll a 17 or better, you go before any of the foes. Agon tells you what they are in the first round—I’ll post the stat block in the OOC thread.

Illumination:  The Astral Plane in this place is brightly lit day and night.

Gromley moved near his friends, and focused his will. Causing him and them to fade from sight even as he tears at the minds of 3 of the devils.

OOC: Using Psi veil on 15,16, and 17.

Does 15 psi damage.

Anyone next to Gromley and him are invisible to target.

Harald stared intently at the approaching devils then licked his finger and held it up to gauge the wind.

“Aye!” he said suddenly, “aboot there is fine”.

The Phoenix Helm blazed suddenly and seemed to infuse his axe with a golden glow.  And with that he drew back his arm, took a step forward and hurled his axe high into the air.   The range was very long but with the help of the helm’s magical powers the axe reached its target...just!  The axe barely reached its target but barely was enough.  A gush of ichor burst from the devils chest and although it was resistant to the Helm’s added fire damage, that took a little more of its life force.

The beast staggered and the axe flew back to Harald’s waiting hand.  And as it did so, the dwarf disappeared under Gromley's invisibility shield.

Gain a +2 power bonus to my next ranged attack roll this turn.  If the attack hits I deal an extra 2d8 fire damage.

Dwarven Throwers - level 10
Property:  Gain a +2 item bonus to thrown weapon damage rolls
Power (Encounter - standard action)
Make a ranged basic attack with my melee weapon using my strength mod on the attack damage rolls, as if the weapon had the heavy thrown weapon property.  The weapon automatically returns to my grip after the attack.  -2 for range but +2 from Helm.

Stepping forward, Sonliin waited for the devils to approach.  "Come here and meet your death!" he said, in the language of the devils.

OOC: Move to new location and ready standard action to cast Thunderwave when they all move next to him (It will take a double move for them to get next to Sonliin)

Despite being eager to fight, Darratheir moved silently in front of Sonliin and the rest of the group. Partly hidden under his bear skin, he stopped dead, the Arrow of Fate in one hand and he started to wait, head down.

Move action: Moving to position
Standard action: Using total defense in case you have a surprise for us
Not rolling initiative as I have +17. :)

Zog moves up behind the defenders and lobs a small red ball into the air. It lands in front of three of the devils and burns them--probably the first time they've been burned in a long time.

Move up, Ignition, hits 20-21-22 for 42 fire after their resist 10. They're all bloodied. Creates a zone that they ignore because they have resist 10 fire, but put it on the map just in case. Then moves to get next to Gromley.

12:26, Today: Zog the Faceless rolled 52 using 2d12+32 with rolls of 8,12.  Damage.
12:25, Today: Zog the Faceless rolled 45,39,48 using 1d20+32,1d20+32,1d20+32 with rolls of 13,7,16.  Ignition: 20,21,22.

Waiting for the right moment, Sonliin unleashed a blast of thunder that shook the devils, pushing them back a bit.

OOC:Thunderwave hits them for 32 thunder damage (No 1's) Pushing them back one square.

Chapter 6--The Astral Fields

Gromley begins by softening up three of the foes; Harald then wounds one that yet stands, including burning it much to its chagrin; Agon fries two that fall. Zog then burns three more, again to their visible displeasure.

The host of devils moves. Several charge Darratheir ineffectually; the others converge on Sonliin or between the two astral walls. Sonliin blasts two of them into oblivion and wounds the third.

#s 13-15 charge Darratheir; all miss. 16, 17, 20 and 21 die; others are bloodied as per the table below.

All PCs are up! Please pay attention to each others' turns--if you start stepping on each others' effects, I will slow things down and go back to groupings.

Gromley gestures, and the entire group of 9 in front of Darratheir glow and start to float slightly. Then two of them in front of the warrior fly away, smashing into two of thier fellows before crashing to the ground far behind the main mob.

OOC: Using Living Barrage attack.

11:15, Today: Gromley Underhill rolled 30,33,41,40,45,47,49,39,48 using 1d20+29,1d20+29,1d20+29,1d20+29,1d20+29,1d20+29,1d20+29,1d20+29,1d20+29 with rolls of 1,4,12,11,16,18,20,10,19.  Living Barrage primary effect vs 3-8, and 13-15.

All foes are immobilized(Save ends). Until they make their save, they are all subject to the secondary effect two at a time. 13 Is critted and takes 9 damage.

11:23, Today: Gromley Underhill rolled 9 using 6d6 with rolls of 1,3,1,1,1,2.  Crit damage to 13.

Secondary targets-14 and 15, are slid 7 spaces and hit 9 and 10 during their travels.

11:18, Today: Gromley Underhill rolled 48,38,45,44 using 1d20+29,1d20+29,1d20+29,1d20+29 with rolls of 19,9,16,15.  Living Barrage secondary effect vs 14, 15, 9 & 10,

14 and 15 take 20 force damage, and 9 & 10 take 11. All four are prone, and 14 and 15 are still immobilized(save ends).

11:22, Today: Gromley Underhill rolled 20 using 2d6+13 with rolls of 1,6.  Force damage for secondary targets.

The secondary attack kills devil 15. Note that the primary attack missed devil 3 because of a nat 1.
