Kirpich, Stringfellow, Danos, Syvanus, Oren, Snorri, Marlena and their horse and two prisoners arrive back in town...

"Well this is a welcome sight. What do we do now? Split up our winnings, or see to these two?"

Danos has always preferred the feel of a city to the more wild lands.

"As per the contract, we need to find Oly, or at least separate his share and then find him."

"Agreed. Lets hand the prisoner to Haderaum first, then split the spoils as per contract."

"Are we taking Kalvo with us to the guild? While I don't feel he should recieve a share of what we earned, he was still done wrong by someone. It should be investigated by those higher than us."

"I agree. The guild, or Haderum?"

"I say Hadereum first, then split the gold. Kalvo's matter is likely not a quick one and I'd like to get paid before we get into it," Danos says.

The Hadereum seems to have a nose for gold, I say to the guild first and divy the gold, then we take the prisoners to the Hadereum if the guild says ok...

"That works too. I'd just like to get paid as soon as possible!" Danos says, still a thief at heart.

"Once the Haderaum get him, we will not see him again. Perhaps the guild can decide both matters. So off to the guild unless someone objects..."

"I will get us the small conference room, and we need the services of someone with Connoisseur skill to evaluate the weapons, I will try to sell off the armors, for the usual 40% worth value. If we can get the mages amongst us to check over anything magical we may have missed... the terms of the contract state that we need to treat the gear as its cash value when dividing it up, so that we can pay our investors properly, although you can choose to keep whatever your share is worth."

Occ: Ii need to find the contract and work out how many shares are worth what, and get a total valuation for gear, remind me of anything I left out.

Snorri  accepts the axe as part of his share, donates to his new church, and also takes the knives of the prisoners, which he returns to them, along with the seed money that Kalvo had given him.

"I have seen how the guild keeps the indedentured men, they have quarters next to those sold to the necromancer. It is harsh way to live, and hard to keep one's dignity. When I swore myself to your group, I could not hold his coin any longer, and all he ever wanted was to have a few fistfuls of that lost silver, wanted it bad enough to consort with necromancers. The Hadereum is likely to fine him for five years income, plus the cost of healing. He will not be a danger to anyone for years, and this may well break him."

"Fair enough then, I have not familiarized myself with Haderums Justice. I can add some to what you offer, though his desperation for coin is still some concern of mine, for it will still avail him to dishonest gain. Perhaps effort would be better spent seeing to him serving the church of Grom for his sins instead, arguing that employing someone carrying the blasphemous rod meant that his punishment should include service to Grom? Our church could then focus on making him a better person rather than damaging him for his transgressions."

Kalvo had nothing to do with the elemental enslaving rod, that was a Shevnian wizard; Kalvo merely worked with a necromancer and his foul undead.

Getting them charged with necromancy will involve being subjected to truthsayer spells, you might want to coordinate before engaging with that,  and it may be best for Kirpich to not participate...

Incidentally, the local priest of Grom is a very old fellow who is part earth elemental, and has some druidic investment as well. He is called Vechiu de u Voscu.

Kirpich is the kind of fellow that does not like to keep secrets form his order. He will ask for a private meeting with Vechiu, during which he will describe his dealings with the rod of the builder, including its use to stop the undead elemental from being used for evil purposes under the control of a necromancer. He will go into detail of how this resulted in the rods destruction by causing the group to choose the blessings of Grom over the cash from the rod, and how Grom had forgiven him when they did so.

He takes the approach that it is best to face the consequences now rather than giving evil men something to hold over him.

Returning to the Guild, Syvanus  grabs a slightly better meal and gets a small room with his earnings. Tomorrow he'll look for more work.

The guild seems to have a few less people in the common room, although in addition to Snorri and Marlena, you note that Molag the adventurer is there in newer looking armor, along with that one armed woman he is sometimes seen with. A goblin in a black cloak is also present.

A wizardly type with hair and beard that is dark but showing white and gray at the roots, in a set of robes spangled with stars and astrological symbols comes out of the kitchen with a bowl of brown, and sits down beside Molag and the one handed woman, who has been introduced as Szuzana.

The old spellcaster puts down the bowl and fusses about his pockets looking for a spoon, and in so doing, spills out a set of decorated cards onto the table.

" Well, that is hardly auspicious."

"Ludlow, what is? I can't tell what any of those mean, except for those two. I mean, that one is death, and that other one is the magician... and he's upside down"

" The two cards are not in relation to eachother.. and the horizontal position of the death card... it is also inverted. Usually it means change, but in this position, it signifies something stagnating, and in opposition. Battles also, with all of these sword cards. They aren't in any of the traditional  spreads, so I cannot determine the sequence by the relative sequence. Someone unskilled at their art, I  fear that might be referencing myself...it has been said that I  am present at more disasters than most, although I  have been the cause of only a few... miscasts happen to every practitioner,  truth be told. Mibne just seem to be.. more vivid. I will have to make a note of thses, but my stew is cooling rapidly, and I dislike it when the dat congeals and becomes gristly."

"Many spelling errors have subtle effects. Often a spell simply fizzles out, or makes a popping sound, or does something small, like unfasten your bootlace when you were trying to lock a door. Then also, sometimes attempting to quash an evil ritual accidentally opens a gate to the nether regions and xauses a street collapse."

A tall young man steps in, obviously a bowman and quite obviously new to the guild and likely to the city as well, he looks slightly lost, but notes Ludlow coming out with a Bowl of food and approaches that group... How does one acquire a bowl of stew?

He returns with his bowl and sits across from Szuzana, Be there much use for a bowman and tracker about? Not really fond of cities to be truthful, but things are unsettled outside the walls

After a few spoonfuls, he nods I see your point, filling perhaps but someways from tasty.

"It is the bare minimum for survival. The guild will keep you from being arrested for vagrancy, and from starving, but not a great deal else without your coin. There might be work to be had though, and I hear the Hadereum deeded some of the abandoned buildings by the street collapse to a band of cult hunting adventurers, and the incident Ludlow speaks of forced the Hades priests to start issuing licenses to hunt the cult in the undercity.  Whoever builds on that site might not have access below, although I wager they still get visitations from the netherworld."

That sounds most unsettling, I think I'll avoid that if I can.

"Areas where spirits have traveled frequently become places other spirits are drawn to. I am not sure if it works that way for demons, but once the veil is torn, the tear gets bigger."

same map to a bunch of other teams, and not only was there nothing left when they got there,
they were attacked by another crew that came after them. Stuff like that happens.
Szuzana and me, we were with Haskell... he went to some vinyard or church or something,
 and we got rich killing trolls with the blue haired witch  who looks like Marie and her
walking statue. I got new gear, and have been picking up pocket change working for Liebert.

A familiar figure descends the steps into the common room, accompanied by several men in brown and cream livery, who then depart. Some of them look like you have seen them before...

"Syvanus. I got a tip as to a possible quest or employment, and it isn't quite in my line of caravan escort hiring, so I thought of you. Do you have a moment?"

I always have a moment to listen where work is involved.  What have you found?

Apparently her brother is a knight, and married her father's captain of the guard, and they came here to seek their fortunes. I think that they would be ideal for this, but her husband, Baron Marcel Péquenaud specifically does not want them back in Veroigne, apparently because they were loved by the people, and he is not. In any case, a lot of the men at arms departed the barony rather than work for the new baron, who is now barely holding on to the place, and cannot spare folk to hunt down some monster that has been raiding the farms.  The purse is meager, really just a few days at scale for whoever hunts the thing down, but I know there is an abandoned castle near there that lost everyone to plague, and may never have been plundered.  I took no promotional fee for this."

Hmmm, many possibilities with little promised gain ... perhaps the castle is a worthwhile treasure ... is the guild interested in such a building?
I also suspect the Baron is in some trouble and we might be very unpopular if seen to be supporting him ...  where did you find out about this castle if I may ask.

The teamsters told me stories about how the lord had closed the gates to keep the plague from his household, but it got in anyway and the entire demesne had died. The village was in ruins, the fields fallow and overgrown with brambles. It was supposed to have been a wealthy place before the plague."

So indeed a possible lucrative place to see ... will need some protections against the plague for sure. What may we do for you in return?

"The plague killed everyone not resistant, lucky, or with a cleric who could cure. All too often, the healers gave the last of their energy healing others and not protecting themselves. It caused a great crisis in faith, for priests of almost any screed could cure the plague equally, and may were spared who had no faith, although many were seen as diabolists, except in the south, where the diabolist family D'Ivoire lost many to the plague as well. These were the tales we heard in my youth. The plague was a few years before my time, but I grew up seeing how it ravaged the land, whole villages depopulated, both here and in Shevnia."

I think this bears some effort, let's see who is interested.


He will go to the table and brief those present on what has been offered.

He nods his head , sounds like there is some coin and potential as well. Count me in.

As the group speaks, some would probably notice the dwarf sitting along by himself at the next table.  As he gets up to approach the bar, he seems tall for a dwarf.  What's most noticeable is his girth, however.  At 270lbs, he is a very large man for 4' 5".  His well-polished armor shines in the light as he moves across the room.

After spending a moment at the bar, the dwarf approaches the table, where he pulls up a chair.  Putting down a large tankard of ale next to him, he speaks to the group.  "Greetings.  I am Balir Ironhide, and I have recently joined the guild from my home in Dvergholt.  As I don't know anyone here, I decided to come over and introduce myself.  As a peace offering I have purchased a round of ales for everyone, and some wine for the elves."

As he says the word Elves there is slight hardening of his tone, although not everyone would notice it.

"I heard you mention work.  To this point no one has offered me the chance to accompany them on an adventure.  If you would have me, I would like to offer my services as a warrior.  My axe is sharp, and ready for action.  "

OOC  Balir will purchase a round for the table, ale and wine as noted.

An adventurer working off some debt to the guild as a barmaid brings the drinks, with amazing facility for someone wearing brass knuckles.

You would be most welcome, a good fighter is critical always.

Syvanus sips the wine although he would have preferred an ale.

Balir nods in response to Kirpich's information.  "Seems pretty straight forward.  Hunt down the monster, probably resupply in a local town, and then see what we have in the castle.  I'm sure it will be nothing like that, but it doesn't sound bad from that description.  We might earn some good favor with the locals as well.  I would be interested."

So we have four to start, perhaps we should see if we can find a mage  to accompany us... and another good fighter. We have two with bows it seems, a Priest and one good fighter.

With a sharp tap, tap, tap from his hooves a faun approaches the group. He is wearing an eye-catching (or perhaps eye-straining) tunic mostly in shades of red and orange. "Pardon me good sirs, but I heard you mention needing another for a task." <bows> "I am Dionysus Dispatha, a most excellent dancer and swordsman. I find myself in need of both adventure and of coin. I would be most interested in hearing the details and in joining your merry band."

A sword dancer, you say? I am Kirpich, a priest of Grom, and this is Balir, a Dwarven warrior, and Syvanos, an Elven archer. Aethul the ranger expressed some interest as well, and Molag is a blade for hire if we need him or he wants to joins us, but I am not sure. Someone skilled with traps or the arcane would complete our group nicely."

Balir waves at the waitress and motions for her to get Dionysus an ale.

"Bah, my axe shud be enuff for this.  We can handle anythun that comes at us.  More treasure fer us if we take a small grup.  I am new here, so chuse what you will.  I can not decide fer yu."

Balir sits and watches the discussion among the people at the table.  As the new person, he does not know anyone, nor does he know of their capabilities.  Thus, he doesn't have anything to say.  The decision was not his to make, nor would he want to make it in this situation.  With nothing else to do, he takes a long pull from his tankard, and then motions for another one from the barmaid.

"What about you, Marlena? I have just come back from fighting a Necromancer, albeit a lich one. I would still prefer Grom to approve of any I adventure with, all the same. I value his opinion very highly!"

The barmaid refills the dwarf's ale, pauses a moment and shrugs... knowing better to expect a dwarf to tip.


The black clad goblin shrugs, and wanders off. Ludlow, is still staring at some cards he has laid out, and does not seem to have notice the conversation.

The one armed woman, and the adventurer with the fancy hat look at eachother and shrug. The fellow addressed as Snorri looks on expectantly, as does the mage with the long curly hair.

Syvanus looks around the table, noting who has left and who has stayed. So Snorri and Marlena fill out the group? are all satisfied with that?

He gets ready to get up.

Balir's brow furrows a bit, but he starts to gather his things, taking Kirpich's lead.  "I dunot fancy traveling wit a Necromancer, but dat is from reputation only.  Snorri, yu have me good faith, and den we will see how tings go as ve travel.  I vill not judge based on reputation, only on experience, as it shuld go fer all ov us.
