Balir's eyes sparkle at the mention of gold.  He finds himself pushing towards the front, such that he's right behind Chunky if possible.

Balir has an excellent vantage point from up in front of the line, and so he does a double take when looking at the gate.

[Private to GM: Made it by 6.  Ought to be enough I should think.
14:08, Today: Secret Roll: Balir Ironhide rolled 6 using 3d6.  Per 12 for the gate.

Kirpich follows with the mule, looking for danger.

"If I had my way, I would prefer to be safely in a tower with the beast attacking me than the other way around. But we are not in the tower yet, you might just get to do a lot of killing before we are."

While the major chain securing the gate is locked from within, the there are smaller chains with Triunist holy symbols hanging from it. Judging by the tarnish, they have been there for at leady a generation.

Now that is interesting, I wonder if they seek to hold an evil inside or protect something of value?

Balir, being unfamiliar with what the symbols mean, needs to ask for some help.  "I am unfamiliar with these symbols.  What do they mean, and what can we expect to see inside based on that?  Anything supernatural, or are we talking more mundane challenges?"

The symbols on the small locks were of a fairly large church in this area, the Tripartite God.  Why they locked it is a fine question. Can anyone sense evil?

In reply to Kirpich Rockson (msg # 473):

The iron gate is fastened by a deadbolt on the other side of it, and by a heavy chain wrapping it to the other gate, with the lock on the inner side. Three smaller chains (lanyard sized) are also wrapped around where the gates meet.

The gates are three yards high, form an arch shape, and are flanked with stone pillars that are wrapped with iron bands and set with spikes, also three yards high (the spikes bring it half a yard higher). What you can see of the wall is similar- three yards high, with the last foot or so sloping outward, and capped with rusty spike about half a yard high. The walls are over two feet wide at the base.

The smaller chains with the triunist symbols are looped through themselves, they may have been bulky neclaces, and are silvered, but are rusted into position, and may need more than bare hands to break them.

The larger chains are much thicker, if rusted, and the padlock is rusted as well.

In reply to Kirpich Rockson (msg # 476):

You are not certain how deep the wall runs, but you might be able to burrow beneath the gate.  Simply making an open pit a yard or two wide with sloping sides, deep enough to walk through without ducking much would require displacement of 16 yards of earth, which would of course return to its original position in a day.

Going by the cost of permanence as presented by Krom.

Earth magic is familiar to Balir.  It was commonly used to augment mining operations back at his home in Dvergholt.  In fact, some areas required it for building bridges across caverns.  He was comfortable with it's application, so he doesn't feel the least bit out of place standing by Kirpich as he does the work.

Balir doesn't know what he faces inside this tower, but he's confident that whatever it is will pose no threat to him.  The depths of his home contained far more terrible creatures than anything he would find here.  As such, Balir confidently hefts his axe and shirld, and leads the way through the tunnel.

Balir will move towards the man but stop at about 3 yards or so.  The rest of the group needs to come in, and others may have a better idea what happened there.  Balir will be vigilant for any danger that may show itself.
