"Aye, that's different. We can guard them, down there with sword and spell. None shall bother them, but how do you keep vandals from destroying their work, after they've finished?"

In reply to Sederic (msg # 31):

The barkeep shrugs."Wooden signs nailed into the wall with iron spikes might keep some from tearing them down, better at least than the parchment Leibert used. If that doesn't  work, he may spring for something more durable, like carved stone. As it is, he agreed to have Martin illuminate the signs with magic."

When do you need us to go help these workers?"

The door swing opem, jingling the rusty bell. Two men and a woman enter, lugging bundles of painted wooden planks, hammers and  sacks of iron spikes.

"Hello. We'll be your escort in the undercity. I am called Grimaldi, and this my associate,  Sederic."
Grimaldi finished his ale casually, turning his mug upside down, and placing it on the bar, signaling he was finished drinking.

In reply to Sederic (msg # 39):

The laborers raise the loading platform, and familiar with Benoit's reluctance to work the crank, lower it back downwith the store gnage, and climb down the adjacent ladder instead.

You are all now in a small whitewashed woom with signs of recent plastering and packed with kegs of ale and racks of wine bottles, illuminated by sconces holding glowing but unlit torches.
There is a door to one side, open to a similarly lit area, from whence you can hear several voices.

In reply to Sederic (msg # 42):

You can hear several voices speaking Aralaise. One is Lourdad, one Martin, one sounds male, and one bold strong voice is female, and seems to be somewhat authoritative in tone. You catch a glimpse of the speaker, a relatively decent looking orcish woman wearing a fine gambeson and matching quilted pants, fanning herself with a silk fan with the hand not on the hilt of her sword.

In reply to Sederic (msg # 44):

Spotting you over the stacks of crates and barrels, Lourdad gives you the nod.

In the much larger room, which is whitewashed and ringed with doors, you can see a number of individuals:
seated behind a bar with a couple of stools in front of it, is a largish man with  one leg and a number of colorful tattoos on his arms.
Standing near the entrance is the well dressed and slightly overheated orcish woman,
Sitting on a crate and holding a glowing spike is Martin.
Standing next to Lourdad, and immediately beside an openwork bronze gate is an orc in heavy leathers holding a crossbow.

In reply to Grimaldi (msg # 46):

After Martin drops the glowing nail into a sack full of similarly glowing nails, and passes it to a grumbling Frank.  Lourdad give Bart, the doorkeeper with the crossbow the nod, and you see him take a large iron key from a lanyard and unlock what looks like a new lock on the gate, opening with a minimal creak. (You can see dark drips of oil on the hinges) the passage beyond, which is also warded by a metal faced oaken dutch door that was open when you came in, is illuminated by a faint glow from above.

In reply to Grimaldi (msg # 49):

You step outside into the familiar damp of the outer under-corridor,
with its trace amount of decorative tiling.
Above the gate on the outside is a stone carved with a mix of elvish
and Roman runes, and above that is nailed a wooden plank painted with the word "Tavern". Two torch-bright nails are pounded into the sign.
By comparison, the nails in your sack are all candlebright.

The signs the laborers are carrying are a mix of the word tavern, arrows,
And a few with the same address-inscription as is found above the door.

To the right of the gate is a damp looking T intersection,  and there is another intersection some distance to the left.
