Chye was hoping he'd get offers of hospitality for himself, if not the group as a whole, but he'd take whatever he could get!

Many yokai are compelled to count things, like grains of rice. Peach wood is often a repellent, and red silk ribbons are often an obstacle.
Prayer scrolls hanging on red ribbon are better in this regard.

"The drowned spirit is perhaps more formidable. The filth eater is responsible for a number of people experiencing flux, and developing boils on their nethers where they were licked. While abominable, it has not claimed any lives. The same cannot be said of the drowned maiden, and there has been a wasting sickness among those living further from the rice fields, toward the forrest.  I have been making them strong tea to fortify them, but their health is failing, and they seem as pale as those bitten by ka."

[Private to Narrator: these last are victims of the pennegalan. the rokubori is merely thirsting for oil, and small animals.  The Akaname lurks in the outhouse. The shirime lurk out in the woods. the Yurei (drowned maiden) comes from the river, through the rice fields, and has lifebane, so her path can bee seen through the fields]

"Along our way here, we encountered a fallen star stone in the forest that dampens magic.  Its influence had caused some magical creatures of this land to go out of their way toward the city.  It may be that it is affecting those nearest the forest.  If that is the case, those most weakened might be aided by moving them further from the forest.

"Is the drowned maiden seen most near the forest, as well?  Is it known whose spirit she might be?"

She waited for him, but became despondent after many months, and threw herself into the river. We do not know what happened to him, but the great beast was active then, and the old shaman believed he fell victim to it."
