That item is specifically made to combat creatures of air, and might work on other discorporate entities. It also lends its effects to incense that is burned.

The day stretches as you rest. Upon waking near sunset, you note many bright lights...

Chye awakes refreshed, and mills about the village, talking to the people.

"The only other spell of light that I know is Darkness, and I doubt it meets your needs in the way spells that make light do.  I can teach you to find and purify water, if you wish, even to create it from nothing.  Useful for preventing illnesses that can be borne by bad water.

"I can teach you to seek and shape earth; this might be useful in expanding the paddies or managing the flooding and drainage each season.

"I can teach you to light a lamp or fire by magic, perhaps even to create a fire without fuel, though it will only burn so long as you feed it with your energy.  Brightly glowing magical lights are fine, but cooking requires the heat of a fire -- though in truth, if you have the time, it is less tiring to make fire by friction or with a flint.

"These are all of the same difficulty as the magic I have already taught you.  Which do you have the time and energy to learn?"

"I could learn to purify water, and the shaman asked if you can teach me to send him energy, that I might assist with his summoning."

Iskander will attend, to broaden his magical studies further.

"Those are good, honorable choices.  In order to purify water, you must first learn to seek it magically."

The outhouse is a simple thatch roofed shed raised slightly above the ground,, with a few stained planks with holes cut in them. In the heat of summer, the holes may be covered to reduce the effluvia from below.

Not too far off is the bath house, with woven tubs and a large clay vessel where water is heated.

"Hoo-Flung Poo! Where are you? He-who's-abode, is in the commode,...Chye has come for you!" Chye taunts sing-songedly, as he opens the door.
He has left his polearm with his host, for it is too cumbersome in close quarters. He is unarmed, except his nunchaku, tucked in his sash.

There is a faint scraping sound in the room, but Chye cannot see the source.

Chou-Zhen follows Chye to the privies, leather whip loose in his right hand.  He opens the door wide, to let as much of the village's new light into the building as possible.

As the light floods the place, there is a hissing sound from the corner. There is a smell, stronger and fouler than the holes in the outhouse floor.

Chye scatters a handful of purified rice onto the floor, in the lit portion of the commode. He hoped the thing would be compelled to come forth, and count them.

Chou-Zhen flips his leather whip forward, makes a silent gesture, and a small light like a candle flame springs up from the popper of the whip, to remain as the whip is twitched to another position.
