In reply to Gareth (msg # 224):

"This weapon is known to me. It is Safyr Alriyh, sword of the wind. It cuts through armor easily, and has q bite to it. Many have come my way, at either end of the blade. This shield bears a mild defensive enchantment, and this amulet is proof against arrows, one need merely speak its name."

[Private to Narrator: quid pro quo for the command word of the amulet (Dire) he wants Gareth to give a specific coin to a blind beggar, one that can summon a demon who will restore his sight.]

Berry has been listening quietly. She finds it a bit surprising that Gareth is more concerned with items that the disposition of his soul, but not too surprised. She does pay some attention to the coin.

OOC: 00:03, Today: Berry rolled 12 using 3d6.  IQ+Magery (17) (looking at a coin).

Gareth will head out to the group. Once out of earshot of the stranger, he will ask if anyone knows how to dispel magic...and have it cast before handing the coin as requested.

Re: Near Al Menir

Some minutes later the fiery man returns and asks for a favor.  Looking a bit confused at the half request, which is to say a request without an explanation, Burke wants to impress his new employer.  So he raises a hand tentatively and responds. ”I can.  What'cha need boss?”  When Gareth reveals that he needs a certain spell cast upon an object Burke smiles, pulls some weeds out of a belt pouch and says simply, ”Long as the spirits aint mad at me.  But usually they like my prayers.  Here goes.  Oh glorious sun and wind and rain...”  This goes on for several more sentences.

OOC:
The meal and the bathing have been done so I'm not sure what Burke would be doing when Gareth comes in and asks for magical assistance.  So I guess Burke is just milling about making small talk with his new 'co-workers'.

Re: Near Al Menir

As Haveron has nothing to add, he sits back and watches the rest of the group work.  He is pleased to see Burke offer to help, although he does seem perhaps a bit too enthusiastic to jump in without knowing anyone.  Haveron quietly files that detail, as the man seems perhaps a bit young or immature.  It's like he needs appreciation or seeks approval.  Haveron was keen to know his people, and moments like this were the way to doing so.

Also of note was the way Burke approached the problem.  While Haveron was completely untrained in the magical arts, he had been around them a while.  They all seemed to work differently.  Gareth just concentrated for the briefest of moments, and he could work wonders with fire.  Burke, on the other hand, was using herbs and other components for the task at hand.  While Haveron didn't understand how it worked or why it worked, this seemed like a major difference in the two men.  He made a mental note to ask Burke about it some time during their travels.  The difference could be important somewhere down the road.

"Thank you. I did not entirely trust the person who asked me to pass this to a beggar. Odd, I know, but I do have morals..."

Once Bourke has finished with the coin, he proceeds to take it outside to the beggar as directed, returning soon after and heading back to Berry or her strange friend to get the password for the Amulet.

Burke says with a smile and a shrug.  ”Your coin, your call friend.  I don't think my stomach was right.”  The rural man digs in a belt pouch and produces a handful of small round reddish berries. He holds them out to Gareth and offers, ”Want some?”

With the remainder he crushes them by smashing his hands together and liberally rubs his hands back and forth, then smears the mess all over his face.  Then he begins to chant while waving his arms around.  ”Hi-ya, eee-ya...”

After watching several minutes of this transpire, Haveron decides it is time to ask questions.

"What's going on?  I stood back and observed while you worked on this.  It's obviously a magical issue and nothing I understand well.  Can you explain the problem in terms I can understand?"

Burke simply shrugs and purses his lips non committally.   Then he pokes a thumb towards Gareth.   ”It's like this C'pn.  Yer fire man wants the magic on this here coin gone.  So I prayed but it weren't good 'nough.  So's he asked an' I prayed again."  Now Burke points a finger from above directly down towards the innocent looking coin in his hand.    ”But this here coin is puttin' up a fight like two squirrels wrestlin' over the last nut 'a Autumn.  There's still a charm on it.”

In reply to Bechazruhk Burke (msg # 246):

Gareth smiles.

"Thank you, Bourke. Berry's friend told me that we could have the items we found identified if we give this coin to a specific beggar. I just wanted to magically 'clean' it before I did so, to avoid anything nasty happening to the beggar. If you have had some effect, even temporary, then I can give it to him, having done my best and done what I agree to do at the same time..."

With that, he will head out and and give the coin to the beggar, warning him that it is magical, and he may want to get rid of it very soon.

He will then return to Berries friend to get him to fulfill his part of the deal.

Re: Near Al Menir

OOC Haveron is the thoughtful kind.  Given a minute to consider all the details he might object to Gareth doing this.  He doesn't understand what is going on here on the magical level.  At the same time, he did notice their acquaintance was probably an evil man and quite possibly not human from his behavior.  And Gareth of ALL people had reservations about giving this to the beggar.  That's most definitely a red flag for Haveron.

I am approaching this as if he is not ready to step in and act before Gareth has already taken action, in the interest of moving the story along.

[Private to GM: If you think this is fair...  Based on the short interaction, I think Haveron would be extremely concerned about what was going on.  He has a low opinion of Gareth, but if the fire mage has reservations, then Haveron will have all kinds of red flags going off.  In his eyes they could set something very evil in motion, the person they were taking the coin from smelled all kinds of evil.  I think this is fair, but asking for a double check here.

Taking the above as an assumption, I wonder how Haveron would handle something like this.  Gareth said he had to give the coin to a beggar.  He obviously wants to follow the words of the (let's say) demon, but he's trying to limit the damage as much as possible.  I think Haveron would follow suit in his own way.

IF this doesn't spoil one of your plot twists, and IF you feel it is appropriate, then I would like Haveron to do the following.

---> Haveron pulls Omar aside, and presses a silver into his hand.  He directs Omar to find the beggar, discretely, and trade out the coin for the silver.  Omar is not to touch it directly, and is to treat it like it is diseased in some way.  Haveron will ask him to return it to Haveron so that it can be destroyed.

Please let me know discretely what you feel is appropriate.
