Living near the street collapse

A small team of conscripted laborers and the massive ogress are filling in the pit caused by a catastrophic spell failure. with rubble, and a fair amount of trash.
The Hadereum is eager to get the buiding in the immediate area reinhabited as quickly as possible, and a fair amount of lower tier guildfolk are moving in.
The area could use a good tavern and some shops to help build the neighborhood.

Once Benito's equipment is unloaded, Mario will try to get a question in before he gets too absorbed.

"Do you have an estimate yet on how much lumber, brick, sand, and lime we'll need?  I'd like to get that stuff while we still have the donkey and cart, but if we don't know what's needed yet, I should probably return them to the cartwright."

Benito estimates that the repairs to keep the housing at Status-2 squalor would be several hundred, to elevate them to status 0 a few thousand.

Putting a lock on a door costs about $50, and replacing a bronze gate (he heard that somewhere, one was missing) would cost about $250. As needed, and if funded, he can hire laborers to haul large volumes of wood, mortar ingredients, and bricks.

As Benito has yet to enter any space beyond the basement of a row house, and observe the partial street collapse from above, he is quite uncertain about what needs doing below ground, although buttressing whatever is on the other side of the pit being filled with rubble and gravel right now would be a good idea.

The group is a bit large, and might benefit by a breakdown into smaller sets; the team currently working on the er shopping expedition, and the newjacks soon arriving, who may well become your new neighbors.

OOC Whenever you get time, we can sort out the living arrangements via the Nodwin line.  Nothing critical or even pressing.  Just suggesting that we can more easily divide things if the living arrangements are decided.  Doesn't even need to be done on screen, I'm happy to make rolls and handle it in the background if that's easier/more expedient for you.  It seems to be the next logical progression is all.

Oh, and...  I thought we weren't telling the newb's about the underground access?  Maybe a character quirk or disadvantage in play perhaps...?

OOC:Nodwin, we were, but I needed a reason for Benito not to go in the basement unescorted -- which I understood to be of higher priority than keeping secret the mere fact of an opening nearly any basement could have, or gain with little warning.

Living near the street collapse

Nodwin looks at Mario a bit quizzically.  The momentary confusion leaves his face as soon as it came, however, as he adopts a thoughtful visage.  Then, choosing his words carefully, he responds.

"Benito, we have a standing agreement to not discuss the entrance to the sewers with outside people.  The entrance would be considered an asset by many, but also a liability because it allows access to the city by many unpleasant things.  We have taken on a fairly large responsibility by taking over the city block, and the Hadereum have entrusted us with that.  They do not know about the entrance, but we have judged that information would complicate things beyond what is reasonable.

For the moment, we have taken steps to try and keep the city safe, while still making some margin of profit from this.  It's our current livelihood.  Mario has decided to share some very important information.  I understand his reasons for doing so, as you need to make sure the buildings are structurally sound.  I also expect you'll be discrete with the information.

As for the actual work itself, we are looking for only one entrance in or out of the sewers, and we mean for it to be secure.  The rest of the entrances should be bricked over, so we have a barrier in place against whatever unpleasantness exists down there.  So far the list includes zombies, cultists, and a variety of other dangerous creatures.

Beyond that, I have a list of items that concern me.  I have some earth magic we can use for shoring things up, but I'll need your help in knowing how best to apply that.  I have no prior knowledge of architecture or engineering, so your expertise will be welcome.  Let's go look at all of the trouble areas, and you can tell us what you think is needed..."

OOC Nodwin has Truthful and Selfless, plus a few other related items.  I judged he would handle the discussion this way, even if it ends up going badly.  He's not really happy Mario decided to do this without consulting the rest of the group, but he'll roll with it because of his sense of duty.

Also, at last check Nodwin should be talking to the Hadereum right now, so I don't know when it time this would actually take place.  Probably before everyone lef on errands, or after.  I'll let the GM figure out that detail, it's above my pay grade...

Your group is part of an incentive program to repopulate the area and combat urban blight. We are footing the bill for the street repair, as it is a matter of public safety, but the buildings and lots are the responsibilities of the owners, and at the moment that area has no inhabitants save yourselves. We are in negotiations with the Brewers and Inkeepers  guild to reopen some of the establishments there in order to build the community. "Thank you" replies Nodwin.  "We would be happy to take ownership of the following buildings, with the group that you previously have worked with, including myself.  We have already retained an engineer with the required skills so we can shore up any structural integrity issues, and improve the decor of the buildings.  He is gathering the required materials as we speak, so we can begin repairs immediately.

As a side note, several refugees associated with Vejovis have sought me out, due to my reputation within the order.  We plan to use one building as a healing center, as long as you have no objections to that use.  I do not know if there are any restrictions on how we manage these new responsibilities.

In addition, the following buildings are located in the same area.  We have several associates who I can vouch for interested in taking ownership of these buildings.  One of them plans to open a small shop, and a number of others are in good status with the guilds in town.  I believe this would benefit both of us, as you would have fewer buildings in disrepair, and we would be able to get them repaired while the existing project is already in motion.

If you are willing to grant us these additional buildings, then I will stake my reputation on their responsible use, until such time as the inhabitants can generate their own reputation with the Hadereum.

What say you, Acolyte Flavius?  Will you trust me with this charge?"

OOC In response to your 'out of sequence' statement below.  Nodwin has a good dose of the Selfless, so he's sticking his neck out for the larger group, as he feels it would be in everyone's best interest.

Nodwin will respond after listening to the acolyte.

"We will reinvent the area, Acolyte, so the people of the city no longer remember it as a place of corruption and murder.  On top of that, I will personally take responsibility for the improvement of the neighborhood as much as we can.  I have already lined up suitable denizens for many of the abandoned homes.  The refugees of Vejovis will want their own places to live if we have room.  It will no doubt take us time to get established there, but we have only taken on this responsibility but a couple days.  You will see suitable income flowing from the neighborhood soon enough.

Thank you for this boon, and I am happy we can work together to make the city a better place for all.  I believe everyone can benefit from this arrangement.  Now, with your permission, I will return to my fellow citizens, and continue our work."

Nodwin watches the Ogress planting the trees.  He had half a mind to see if she wanted some "mulch" to put under the trees.  At the same time, it didn't seem quite right to dismember zombies after they had already been rekilled.  Plus, it would leave them open to questions they didn't really want to answer.  Instead, Nodwin strikes the idea from his mind, and goes to find the main group.

"Here is the paperwork associated with these buildings.  We have been granted ownership of this block, plus these additional structures." Nodwin will point out the specific ones to the group as he does this.

"Since we now have permanent spaces to live in, I recommend we discuss a longer term living arrangement based on my previous recommendations.  Our established group can take over ownership of the central square here, as we have already done.  The newcomers can have the buildings across the street, and down the block towards the collapse."

OOC Does my previous picture from the accounting thread capture the current arrangement, or do you want to draw up something specific, boss?  Even a 5 minute sketch on paper would be plenty enough, just want a visual aid if it's convenient for you.

As Jareth and Jocelyn head to the Hadereum to collect a reward,
Benito is installing locks on his residence (normal cost of living for him to get it conditioned and liveable, $50 per lock otherwise) and storing building supplies in the empty house beside his.  Some local laborers are peering about, looking for work.

Architecture lets you spot instability, but not correct it.

You can tell that the structures around this "park" or sacred grove or whatever it is may be at risk for collapse if there is not some kind of reinforcement to the foundations. Some of the tilting buildings can be shored up with beams, and unskilled labor is fine for that.

The hole in the wall, about a yard accross, was first opened by Brodak, and leads into areas of a sensitive nature, of which Mario and Clarence are well aware.  As the bricks were unstable enough to be knocked through, they are certainly in need of reinforcement, and as an opening, could do with the placement of a lintel and posts, or at least an arch, especially if a lockable door is to be eventually placed here.

Beyond that is a chamber you know to have a buckled wall... first things first. Jareth needs to approve entrance thaere, unless Nodwin decides it is alright.

Mario takes up a position with a clear shot into the room beyond Brodak's hole, and checks the light stone tied to the upper nock of his bow (I think it should still be lit; it was good for a week or more, but don't recall the day count since Nodwin made it).

Nodwin nods in assent.

"It depends on my faithfulness in the moment, which amounts to my connection to Vejovis.  It comes from the heart, though, and not from the deeds.  I can do things for the wrong reasons just as well as I can do nothing for the right reasons.  Our understanding of a god will always be imperfect at best.  All we can do is make educated guesses about their thoughts and motivations, and execute on them as best as we can.  Usually I get about a week out of the stones, because I hold the favor of Vejovis.  However, it varies sometimes by the minute, if I lose focus and let my thoughts wander.  My faith requires a certain mental discipline, in much the same way you must match your mental strength along with your physical skill to handle the bow as well as you do."

With that said, Nodwin steps through behind Jareth, with his staff ready for trouble.  While Jareth knew much about everything, he wasn't so great if they ran in to trouble.

Through this long room with its unstable wall you go,into an archway. There is a small vaulted room with four exits. Dim smoke colored runes hang in the air an inch or two in front of it, forming some type of Magic circle. The entire structure hovers about a foot off the ground.

Use of shape earth takes 10 fp/yard (-bonus for skill) to peelegantly hold the shape, the cost for shape stone is 10x the base also, otherwise the shape holds for 24 hours.

Have you been altering the deal again Darth Vader?

By the book:

Duration: 1 minute.
Cost: 1 per cubic yard of earth shaped (minimum 2). Half that to maintain (round up). Double cost to shape stone; sextuple cost to shape cut or worked stone, like a wall. It’s not easy to make your own door into the castle.

So our best bang for the buck (FP wise*) is to buy a load of bricks and unworked stone and use the unworked stone to mortar the bricks into place.  Otherwise the best ($$ wise) is to rework the worked stone back into a stable load bearing wall at 6 FP per cubic foot of stone.

* This is even accounting for sweat equity in ye olde "buy bricks and mortar and do it the old fashioned way", since we'll all be paying FP and time this way.

If you can shape the earth for 24 hours to enable me to create a solid wall when it gos back into place it should be stable right?

Nodwin for the most part ignores the discussion of the bone gate for now.  He was curious to see what was beyond it, and so he secretly wanted to go into it and explore at some point, when he was more experienced.

When it comes to the architecture question, however, he does pipe up. "I don't have experience with these things, so you tell me what you need.  I can shape a pillar to support the ceiling while you do your work, or we can make some other arrangement.  Vejovis has granted me the ability to move earth, but you're the expert in how to shape it so it's structurally sound."

Make an engineering roll to determine what you need, and then masonry to build it, which should take a few hours to do (building a brick or ashlar pilasterto support both the wall and ceiling. In DF and DFRPG, Shape Earth is 1 FP/cubic foot, x6 for worked stone, so 6 FP/cubic foot for worked stone, not 100 FP/cubic foot.

The costs weren't changed.  There is a vast difference between 1 FP per cubic foot and 10.  And an even bigger one between 6 FP per cubic for worked stone and 100.  Which is what you quoted.

Also, "all of the spells" weren't reduced in duration from Permanent to 24 hrs*.  There are more than plenty of Instant and Permanent spells in DFRPG and DF that are still "until something changes it (Instantaneous) or dispelled (Permanent)".

Shape Earth was never Permanent.  It has always been (and remains unchanged from) "Duration: 1 minute", which means a pillar made of sand/dirt falls down the moment the spell ends.  Shaped Earth (and stone) remains as stable as the structure that it was shaped into, which is why Architecture is required by the spell to create stable structures.

* Pretty much only things that could "wreck the economy", Create Earth, Earth to Stone, Create Food, Essential Food, and Create Water in DFRPG† (which are all Instant, lasts 24 until unless consumed).

In DF the list is longer†:  Create Acid, Create Earth, Create Food, Create Fuel, Create Ice, Create Water, Earth to Stone, Essential Acid, Essential Earth, Essential Food, Essential Fuel, Essential Water, and Water to Wine.  Basically, if it's an Instantaneous or Permanent create or non-deadly‡ transformative spell Wizard‡ spell, it should be limited to 24 hours.

† But then DFRPG is a very abridged spell listing.  Very abridged.  I bet most of the PC casters in these games have spells not in DFRPG.

‡ For instance Petrification Flesh to Stone remains Instantaneous and indefinite as do the Healing spells.

With Jareth acting as a Mason (defaulted skill 12), Nodwin with Shape Earth, and Benito with his actual skills, and then everyone else as 'unskilled' labor/lookouts, how long does this repairing the walls work take?  And how expensive?

And I think we still need Benito to make a roll.

Things to be installed like locks and anything fancy will cost money, having basic furniture installed etc will come as Col, as will some of the reinforcement of the cellars. Points above 3 will lead to inclusion of swept, sturdy and secure basement levels, down to what you cleared on the second sublevel, legal by the hadereum. For that area, installation of gates will cost, maintenance will be Col, as the Vejovites or anyone you approve roof comes down to scrub bloodstains, and sweep the rubbish away.

The thing about base as I use it is that it is signature gear for a place.

Sounds good boss.  Jokes aside, I think it's a worthy place for him to develop.  We'll have to discuss after the next run, however, because he spent all his points from the last run.  It was important to get Shape Earth for shoring up the living arrangement.

Make an engineering roll to determine what you need, and then masonry to build it, which should take a few hours to do (building a brick or ashlar pilasterto support both the wall and ceiling. The space will need six of them, and that would be about 18 man hours to complete ( skilled laborers with 11 in masonry cost $30/day)

And how much needs to be done elsewhere down here (in our neighborhood)?

Repeating from earlier... Narrator got sidetracked with the Base stuff.

Shit, did the math a

Nd lost it. Revised: 6 collumns x 9 feet tall x 1 foot wide, x 12" x 3.82 per 1'x1" of rubble and mortar is $2475, reducd to $371 due to materials  available.

I think the costs are a bit dear but younare getting two cuirrasses worth of work for the price of a helmet. Buying some beams for construction purposes would be cheaper than stone, but that can be dealt with later.

I have been loot shy, that will change, as Jocelyn has a lead on a sizeable quantity of silver, and the Ymid will pay something like $12k in gold.

"After buying the stuff for Ymid, totaling almost four and a half francs," he waves the list, which shows most of the items marked, "there are nine francs and seven bits."  He pulls a disappointingly small handful of coins out of his pouch.

He carefully places the coins in a small, mixed pile on a flat surface, and draws out another, much smaller handful.

"I've got a little eating money of my own, I could chip in about half if we have a plan that'll pay within a day or two."  He shows a pile of copper larger than the combined pile of house funds, with a single silver franc on top.  "I was planning to try to stretch this for a week if needed, but just the copper will get me through a couple days."

The creature pauses, and retransmits, this time with visuals that cause everyone to make a fright check at -4, -6 if this is your first time experiencing unwanted telepathy

"An extradimensional entity is being conjured"
Image of a circle of distorted monstrosities that may be humans as seen by something warped, surrounding a detailed summonning circle with a flaming tentacled thing bubbling in through a wall
not far from an area where a greater summoning and ectoplasmic enrobement of a servitor creature occurred"
Image of an even more loathy circle of more monstrosities, along with several abstract  runic entities marked out in  greenish black, that are flaming, and form a spiral around  a set of mathematical notations, that then shed their substance to make the mathematical looking thing get surrounded by fog and a glowing outline. Various of the obscene creatures appear to kill eachother, only feeding the central thing more, until one throws something at it, and it derezzes.
"along with the actualization of some temporarlly displaced summonings, mostly infernal"
There are a handful of those black runes wrapped in flames, that seem folded in on themselves, and surrounded by smaller characters in blueish green, that uncoil from around the flaming black runes, allowing them to unfurl and move about, as though they had been bound by the blue green writing.

Re: Living near the street collapse

Nodwin's eyes go glassy for a few seconds while he mentally follows along with what the unworldly creature projected into his brain.  Remarkably, the symbols and images he saw in his mind were strangely familiar.  When Vejovis first touched him, back when he was searching for a purpose, the feeling was much the same.  While the sensation was far more alien than what he experienced with Vejovis, the creature's method of communication was strangely comforting in an odd sort of way.  Vejovis had come to him using images like this.

That was where the similarity stopped.  The content of these images was far different than what Vejovis had communicated to him.  He had seen fire, and volcanic rock, and the way it cleansed the earth in preparation for new soil and growth.  His abilities with humans were an extension of the way Vejovis renewed the earth.  The only difference was that Vejovis moved in terms of millenia, and not at human speed, so his view of things was far longer than even the longest lifespans.

What this creature was sending...  Well, none of the pictures made much sense.  in Nodwin's perception, it seemed like there was some sort of dreamlike state superimposed over the top of the content.  The images looked to him like they were being seen through a fog, perhaps self-imagined or completed so he could make even some sense of what he was being told.  It was so different and disturbing that it was hard to digest, even in this sort of surreal state he was in.

Somehow, Nodwin was able to follow along with what the creature was showing him.  Perhaps it was because Vejovis had broadened his mind with his touch.  Perhaps it was due to the recent experience they had with the summoning circle and the demon.  Perhaps it was something deep within Nodwin himself, some accident of birth, or perhaps some unknown heritage he had inherited from his family without knowing.  He didn't know.

All Nodwin knew was that he understood what the creature was trying to show him, or he at least thought he did.  Coming back to himself, he notes Jareth drinking with Jocelyn, and he notes that Mario is bolting for the door, presumably overcome with what he was now seeing.  He was not surprised to see this at all.

Instead Nodwin steps directly in front of the creature, not in a threatening way, and ignites the fire on his staff.

"I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to tell me.  Based on the images, I believe they are using eldritch or perhaps essential fire to power the runes, which bind the creatures to the summoning circle.  As you can see, Vejovis has not granted me the same abilities, we have not progressed that far in my religious training.  Most of what you are showing me is beyond my experience or education.  But I know it it must be stopped.  How do we do that?"

In reply to Mario Crowfoot (msg # 221):

The creature accepts the bundles, and assembles thevarteries and hearts together with the bladders, and sets them into internal sockets in the perimeter of its skiff...then pours the potions into the bladders before sealing them.  The  lead ingot goes into athe glass beaker, and the creature flings a bolt of hissing liquid into it. Through the cork stopper, it inserts two lengths of wire, which then connect to the pig hearts.
The hearts beat, and the fluid circulates through it, and the skiff begins to float about a foot and a half off the ground.

It is a little disturbing to watch...

Nodwin observes the procedure quietly.  All he can conclude from this activity is it must be some sort of magic, because he does not sense anything as all of this occurs.  It's all very new to him, although for some reason the actions of the Ymid don't seem so alien as the might have seemed when they first encountered it.

The alien creature, ever curious, takes a vial and uncorks it, and reaches into its cloak near its covered throat, and makes a gurgling sound. Its eye dialates and contracts, and it takes a look at each of you, and some of its equipment.
"Fascinating. A runic interface. Raven albumen. Inchoate invocations to the rider of the arachnoid equine. Useful."
It takes the flying potions, and pours them into the pig stomachs and bladders, and as the wires from the jar of lead and acid prompt the hearts into beating, the skiff raises itself to a smooth height of about two feet off the ground. The ymid places its staff into a socket, and the colored glass you had given it, which were installed in metal sockets, light up and blink. From the lower edge, you can see row upon row of cockroach wings in a channel along the perimeter as they beat, making a faint humming sound.

Nodwin looks at the skiff in front of him with a certain amount of awe.  They had seen a lot over the last couple days, and he had finally been able to absorb it.  With the skiff in front of them now working, he found himself ready for more.  And, being young and curious like he is, it comes out in a bit of youthful enthusiasm...

"Wow, that is really unexpected."
"How does that thing work?"
"How fast can it go?"
"How high does it fly?"
"How do you steer it?"
"Can it take us where we need to go?"

Then, as abruptly as he started, Nodwin comes to himself and cuts himself off short, suddenly self conscious with everyone looking at him.

OOC When does this get weird...?  Jokes aside, it's a little creepy but also very cool.  And, since Nodwin already made the roll for the creepy brain movie before, I figure he was able to see the awesomeness of it.

Jareth appears to have been privy to a private transmission from the Ymid, and has some working knowledge of the gate that may require some research in order to use it effectively.

Re: Living near the street collapse

Collectively, excepting Lefty*, you head a few blocks northward, past the Wastrel's Hope. Along the way you hear some shouting to the east, but that is overshadowed by a small explosion.

It sounds familiar to most of you (IQ+2 to recognize)

Nodwin recognizes the sound, although he is far too anxious about having the Ymid in public sight to really pay close attention to it.  He's much more concerned with getting to their destination so the Hadereum doesn't get involved with the...alien...?

He could hang on to your back like a framepack, and we could tusk some cloth around to disguise Lefty as a backpack...  of if you can train him to walk on 4 legs, we could get him a dog costume to wear...

Or you could save points and eventually level him up to have Summonable as a Familiar so he can port in and out.  Unless he literally 'just' an Ally, in which case, I recommend magic, clever disguises, or leaving him to guard your rooms.

And this is why you should never buy a Familiar/Pet Ally bigger than your head.

[EDIT]
And nice reference to "I Smell A Rat"... and the trope in general.

OOC Nodwin would if not for the presence of the Ymid.  That...complicates things considerably.
