"... ... an t'en Escrivan said 'But that's not my banan-', oh hey, t'e Plutocrat, we're in luck."

The elf seems to be quite happy to see Plutocrat Remulos, and as he approaches he arranges the book he's carrying so it's title will be easily visible to the Plutocrat.

He gives a quick bow, "Plutocrat Remulos, we've discovered this book which best belongs locked in t'e Hadereum's care or destroyed.  Is a text on demonic contract law that suspect is a trap for t'e unwary, an contained a scroll to summon an imp."

The mention of the book grabs Goran's attention.  He immediately loses the anticipation of cleaning out more corrupted worshippers as something of far more interest comes to light.  This was just the sort of thing that could influence many to the dark side of religion.  A book filled with such corrupted thoughts and ideas was truly dangerous in the wrong hands.  He steps closer to see if he can get a good look at the book and it's contents, while listening carefully for the stranger's answer to Hograth's question..

Jareth looks over Hograth for a moment before answering in a guarded tone, "In a library."

His response to the Plutocrat however is quick and open, "Not like t'e ot'er one.  This just be about demonic contract law, no summonin rituals aside from t'e scroll tucked in.  Though, t'ere be writtin on t'e page corners take as bein trap, didn't read enough to confirm.  Ken better in my old age than when was young an foolish."

"Yes" Goran adds.  "If this was in a library which was publicly accessible I need to know about it.  We can't have corrupt demonic cults springing up all over.  Even the best citizen can debase themselves reading literature like this."

Goran nods in agreement, scowling a little bit, which causes some odd wrinkles around his scar.  "That is what concerns me.  Good citizens will not do this of their own accord.  It is the ones corrupted by the foul abominations that do this work.  We must ferret that out if we wish to keep Shevnia unsullied."

OOC I don't know if that's quite the correct reference, please tell me what is if incorrect.

"Won't take any more yer time Plutocrat," he gestures towards the Hadereum building, "who should we see about turnin this in fer t'e bounty?"

To Hograth, "A private library, known fer havin t'e weird books in." He fingers his Brotherhood ring*, "Wouldnay even brought it if weren't fer t'e trap an summonin scroll."

"That is admirable! If you can find any more like this," he says, holding the book distastefully with two fingers""It would be appreciated. We have just licensed a tavern near you, and made an agreement with the druids to work on a greenspace where that hole in the city was.  Let me get you some paperwork on expansion. If that area doesn't  pick up some more i habitants, we won't  be able to keep the streets through it in repair, and I will have to put up with the Merchant's Guild complaining about congestion to and from the docks, which is the last thing I need."

With the way the dice loathe me, this'll be one of those rare moments I roll a 3.

As for the Guild business, I'm willing to accept making a 'gathering info' (Savoir Faire (Guild) or Area Knowledge (Guild)?) roll to check and see if the Drakes are whom they claimed they were and moving along.

Re: Temple Hill

Hograth walks off, but Goran lingers.  The emblem of the Sage's guild on the ring of the strange gentleman gave him considerable pause.  This wasn't some backwater isolated group that might be exposed to this sort of evil religion.  It was a mainstream group with distinguished citizens in the city, who were in theory doing respectable work.  The possibility they could be compromised by this sort of tome was something that he took very seriously, and could not walk away from as easily as Hograth could.  The corruption that a book like this could spread was almost too much to fathom, depending on what sensitive locations converts to this sort of demon worship ended up in.

At the same time, the very mainstream nature of the sage's guild meant that it was large, well organized, and had the usual layers of bureaucracy.  It wasn't like Goran could walk in there and start sorting through their library to find tomes tarnished by demons or worse.  Scholars often valued their secular works with equal or higher esteem than their religious works.  For them, the pursuit of intellect was far more valuable than their spirituality.

Most of them had been exposed to religion, and typically had made a conscious choice to go without for one reason or another.  Goran consistently found this sort to be misled and oblivious to the larger meaning of life.  They clung blindly to what they knew, and measured others by knowledge rather than faith.  However, many were well-meaning dispite their handicap, so Goran tried to meet them with kindness.  There were none so blind as those who chose what they saw, rather than accepting that much of the world was in the hands of a greater being.

Finally, after a very long pause where he measured his possibilities, Goran reluctantly turns to follow Hograth.  He can't do it without stopping to look wistfully backward several times.  Given the political situation, the potential corruption of the sage's guild wasn't a problem Goran could handle in the moment.  He had more acute issues out at Temple Hill that needed to be addressed.  Still, Goran promises himself that he will come back to the issue.  He would go with Hograth for now, to do the work that needed to be done.  Once that was complete, he could start working on a plan to handle the bigger issue of the sage's guild.

In reply to Goran the Marked (msg # 120):

Sensing his friends reluctance, Hograth waited until he caught up, walking a little slower to enable that to happen.

"The tome bothers you. I understand. It bothers me too, but you must remember, it is a symptom, not the source. It was put there by demon worshipers who came from somewhere else.

When you fight a fire, do you deal with the troublesome smoke? No, deal with the fire first, then deal with the damage and smoke it has caused if you must. Fighting the fight the other way round is a sure way to loose the war. And we are in a war, make no mistake. These demons and their gullible servants are fighting, and fighting hard. We will not deal with them by running after their the damage they caused if we cannot deal with the root of the problem. Sages will deal with sages, once the plutocrat tells them what is going on. They are much better equipped to do so, because sages don NOT like people controlling them, in my experience. What the city needs is strong folk to go where the demons have their stronghold. That is what I intend on doing...

Re: Temple Hill

Goran raises an eyebrow at his friend's comments.  Hograth knew him better than he thought, although it was safe to say his concerns were pretty evident in his behavior.  With barely a pause, Goran nods and agrees with his friend.  "Yes, this is true.  But I cannot help it.  The presence of that tome could have influenced a great many people.  The damage it could have caused sickens me.  I will carry this burden for some time.  Still, we must proceed with our task.  I do not know whether the cults on Temple Hill caused the tome to appear in the sage's guild somehow, or if the book led people to begin the corruption of Temple Hill.  Regardless, we cannot fix the problems with the sage's guild easily.  They must police their own for now.  We can make a difference where we are going.  Lead on, my friend."
