"Jednesa, I don't think I can muzzle it.  Maybe if it were a dog, but tigers don't  have long noses and I'm not that good with knots.  I think we're probably better killing it; otherwise, it may wake when we're trying to sleep, and get its feet loose, and cause more trouble."

Re: Seekers of the Flame

"Oh, yes.  Okay."  Jednesa unhooks her crude hand axe/mace from her harness and proceeds to line up to smash each skull of the bound tryger, then (if not stopped) she'll move on to the other just in case it's not dead... (again as long as no one stops her)

OOC:  Do I need to roll?  She'll be holding their head in one hand to steady and know where the head is... so it's possible to really bungle and hit herself.

Re: Seekers of the Flame

Masugatan winces as Jednessa starts bashing triger heads, hating to see something that beautiful crushed like a ripe tomato.  But that's better than waking up with its fangs in his throat.

For the thousandth time lately, he chides himself for becoming too civilized.

Re: Seekers of the Flame

Alchemist McNealy pays great attention to the process, and even comes over to watch closely.  By way of explanation, he says "You never can be to aggressive with gathering alchemical components.  Just my luck I'll need a triger tongue or a spleen to make my latest concoction."

[Private to GM: OOC Alchemist McNealy will move to take whatever components he might need for brews after Jednessa is done.  He doesn't have dungeon butchery (didn't know it was a thing at creation time), so what would be the next appropriate skill? ]

Re: Seekers of the Flame

After smashing the heads, Jednesa stop to think about it for awhile.  Then she goes and get's her tent canvas out and lays it next to the carcasses.  She fishes a sharp stone from her pouch and by feel slowly starts in on skinning one of them...

It's clear to anyone watching, at the speed it looks like she's going, starting, stopping, restarting... it'll take her like 2 days to skin and butcher just one of the animals.

OOC:  So if someone wants to interfere when morning rolls around, or before then at a shift change, go ahead!  I'll hold off rolling her really, really terrible Survival Skill to see how far she get's before someone sane puts a stop to this nonsense.

Re: Seekers of the Flame

While the alchemist wants nothing to do with Jednessa's butchery, he does impulsively grab one of the heads to see if the eyes, tongue, and other components can be salvaged.

[Private to GM:  He's probably got some well developed method or concoction for preserving these things, but absolutely none of the skills for getting them beyond maybe Naturalist or Animal Handling (Equines).  You would think he has done this before.  Next point goes into something along these lines, it's a deficiency in the character build.]

OOC:  22:31, Today: Jednesa rolled 11, 12, 12 using 3d6,3d6,3d6.  Survival 5 (Skill 6 -1).

Even taking all the Extra Time will not yield any kind of success.

In reply to Masugatan (msg # 720):

Emma is able to peel one reasonably well, only reducing the value by about 10-15%. Jednesa on the other hand, is doing quite poorly, reducing it to 40% of its worth.

Which is still valuable.

Occ:
Dungeon butcher was added to DF cannon in DF19; artificers were in DF4 so there should have been an update of some kind that left it as an option.

Re: Seekers of the Flame

OOC  Alchemist McNealy assumed there was a head he could grab and walk away with, given Jednessa's general lack of delicacy.  He doesn't want to be anywhere close to the butchery of the butchery, so to speak.  Also, he was impulsive in grabbing a head, but the quality of the bits would also be in question given the opposable thumbs issue.

[Private to GM: I made a default roll for McNealy to recover useful bits from the head.  Guessing I missed by 1-2, so perhaps the specimen was already rather mauled.
14:41, Today: Secret Roll: McNealy rolled 11 using 3d6.  McNealy dungeon Butchery default, IQ 14.

Occ:

OOC:  Yes, but it doesn't replace the skills listed in DF 2 for everyone else and it has an additional use that no one but Incanters can use (and maybe Alchemists if you're ruling that Incantation Components can be used in Alchemy or that Alchemist can dig out components, then I'll need to add this skill to Jareth's repertoire)... in which case it's still a niche skill that should honestly only be offered to Incanters and Sages (Sages, Scholars, Artificers, Alchemists).  Now if any wizard can burn Magical Components in a ritual for a bonus to their casting skill... let us all know*.

And no, there's been no update to DF 4 Sages, and I even checked the Alchemist in Pyramid 3-82 Magical Creations, Dungeon Brewmasters (which was printed two years before Incanters) and nope, it's a new addition as of Incanters and not 'updated' any where else (it's meant for them to use to get their ritual components with since they can't use Power Items).

* I wouldn't recommend it unless you also require them to carry the Workshop like an Incanter, in which case it's really not worth it...

McNealy, so you know, it's Professional Skill (Dungeon Butcher) IQ/Average, default IQ-5 if you have the relevant profession (I'm presuming Alchemist applies here), so you might have a 'decent' default already.

Re: Seekers of the Flame

As he looks at the mutilated head in front of him, Tradesman McNealy suddenly sits down hard. To the closer observer, he appears to be quivering slightly.

OOC  Thanks for that.  The character has all the required skills for gathering potion components from the wild, but I had no idea the skill existed at character creation.  It makes sense that he would have this skill.  Alchemy is probably more dependent on physical components than just abut anything else.  When we next see character points, it will be his first investment.

[Private to GM: I forgot he has the post-combat shakes.  Since we're still close enough to the tail end of the fight, I had him experience a minor episode.  It's late, but probably appropriate given the moment.]

Re: Seekers of the Flame

In reply to McNealy (msg # 724):

I would suggest it for alchemists as a complimentary skill when scrounging materials. The other use (houserule) it has is for shapeshift/create spells that require familiarity with the thing created/shapeshifted into... want to be a drsgon, need a dragon claw or scale.

Potion of flying? Blood from a magical
 flying creature

This would be the 2e magic version of harvesting mana organs, which needed surgery as a skill. But for superior potion ingredients better than mere scrounging to find items with allegorical significance? Dungeon butcher.

Mc Nealy has a hard moment as he tries to identify the bits of an invisible, smashed triger head, and needs to sit down.

Evelina continues holding Elaina, turning her gently away from the invisible carnage where Jednesa is disassembling the triger and easing her back toward the campfire.  She seems to be whispering something in her younger sister's ear as they move.

Alchemist McNealy still seems to be a bit shaken, so he doe not respond at first, although he does seem to be pulling out of it as time passes.

OOC  Once he feels better, Tradesman McNealy will try to harvest whatever components he can from the rest of the carcasses.

[Private to GM: Aaaand he fails again.
