Maybe get yourself a Cutlass ($300) which comes with a basket hilt, and get that inlaid with silver, so you can biff some boneheads.

Nice thought, Nana, but I have Smallsword skill, cutlass would be -4 skill.  I did get a smallsword, but it's not a basket hilt weapon (effectively a short rapier -- pokey only).  Next time we find a box of coin, I'll see if I can scrounge up a silvered one with a basket hilt.  Couldn't even find a silvered knife, this time.

Meanwhile, what I have is the best thing I know how to use against rats -- regular, giant, and two-legged.

my bad! i thought you had the shortsword skill, but your character called shortswords, smallswords, so i was confused whether you actually used the fencing weapon or not.

Um,shields give a DB based on their size, period. ThisDBapiesto allactivedefenses and to attacks from thefront and shieldflank. You want to be a le to ignoe that DB? be on the opposite flankor behind them.
Want this to be automatic? buy the Standard Operating Procedure perk. Otherwise a successful Tactics roll might help.

You can't  otherwise"aim so astonot be affected by the shield"without moving to the u protected flank.

Sorry for creating confusion when I trying to be clear. The idea was to attack from behind, because Basic says you get no active defences if you are not aware of the attack. Hence the idea was attack from behind/side, but clearly I have not communicated this clearly, for which I apologize.

You made your stealth roll, therefore no active defense, just the passive Defense  bonus of the shield existing. Being behind these guys means being a block awsy; they are advancing on your position.

There is no Passive Defense in GURPS 4e, that is only in 3e.

Well, shit. DB no longer has a passive effect. I have been playing 3e for much longer than 4e, and figured having a 2 foot slab of wood in front of you acted as cover. I stand corrected and apologize for taking an attitude about it.

Re: Out of Character 9

Aine, not to step on the boss's toes, but in the past, the way mages have learned new spells is to visit the Guild, see Spielgud, and make a Thaumatology roll while he casts the spell and makes a Teaching roll.  All rolls passed, you learn the spell.

There's no mention under the Scroll enchantment (M57) about learning a spell from a scroll -- a scroll simply lets you cast a spell you don't know (and puts the burden of the energy cost on the writer).  Technically speaking, a scroll is an enchanted item that binds an already-cast spell until reading the scroll aloud releases it (which I presume means PCs can't write scrolls under DFRPG, which has eliminated PC enchantments).

This circumstance is different; she is fufilling a prepaid charm, and charms let you cast a spell without prerequisites,  allowing for off book spells that cannot be learned normally, like a single instance wild talent.

Thanks boss for the apology, I am sorry my confusion caused any angst. Sometimes I am just a bit slow on the uptake, so I was not sure if it was me...it often is!

if special orders are impossible, due to time involved, then it looks like the only way to get weaponry is to pay for signature gear. that's going to take some cps, and some time....

Or you could look for ways to boost your Scrounging.  Extra Time is always valid, Area Knowledge or Streetwise along with it might do some good.  A Contact might help, depending what your Contact does.  Getting multiple people looking sometimes helps, too.

Signature Gear doesn't give money in DFRPG, which is why you're allowed to take it after chargen.

Points For Money is only allowed at chargen.  The only way to get money is to earn it, thought there are ways to mitigate how much things cost through Perks, which usually have to have very good explanations behind how you got them (IE, you're a dwarf or elf, you have Guild Rank, etc).

Speak for yourself.  Money is always an issue, or it's part of the GM's job to make it one.  Else why would you risk you life on a daily basis?
