Stepping in between the gargoyles and the rest of the party (relatively speaking), the former guard raises his shield in expectation of the creature's attack.
[Private to GM: I'll try to wait for a Stop Thrust against a one of the gargoyle, assuming either of them charges me. If it happens, I've rolled a 15 (hit by 1) using a regular attack, for 7 damage +1 per 2 full yard the gargoyle moved toward me.
