He tries to find a good spot to observe the fire that is also reasonably safe.

I wonder if this is the beast or someone just burning dead wood...

Balir will actively look for the beast in an effort to both protect the group, and carry out their mission to destroy it.

Snorri points at the distant smoke with his axe.
"That looks to be where our fire breathing beastie is, I say we creep upon him, but irregular like, so he cannot feel our footsteps in the earth as he might if we were marching.

"Slowly, and spread out. That sounds like a good idea. Chunky, please lead the way...as sneakily as you can manage. I doubt that will be at all sneaky, but at least if you stay 15 yards ahead of us and it tries to come out behind you, we will have your back..."

[Private to GM: Kirpich rolled 1 under stealth. Chunky does not have stealth skill, DX=8, rolled 8...not sure how much stealth a 250 lb walking wall of rock can have, but he has DR9 and fire resistance! Backpack with the Mule...]

Balir will seek to take the lead for the rest of the group, behind Chunky.  His Axe and shield are out and ready, but he seeks to keep them out of the light to cut down on reflections.

[Private to GM: 12:23, Today: Secret Roll: Balir Ironhide rolled 12 using 3d6.  Moving sneaky-like, 13.]

Within a small copse of merrily burning saplings is a massive reddish creature with eight legs and very heavy scales!
Asyou approach,  its dinnerplate eyes open wide. The creature is nearly thirty feet long!

When Balir catches sight of the creature, it's eyes flick open.  He pauses for a moment, assessing the creature.

[Private to GM: Rolled perception.  Made it by 3.  If the thing so much as twitches, indicating that it has spotted them, Balir will charge.  He's overconfident, and wants to protect his companions.  Plus, the creature is undoubtedly good for fame, and it's scales would bring a handsome price.  He's greedy.  And, I think "never backs down from a challenge" plays at least a part.  He has to show the foul elf he's better.
14:36, Today: Secret Roll: Balir Ironhide rolled 9 using 3d6.  Balir PER 12.

I don't think he's dumb enough to go toe to toe with this thing.  Even dwarven conceit has it's limits.  Probably out in front, close enough to get it's attention, and then all out defense to keep it occupied.

That is quite the beast... I doubt even Bodkins will do much to harm it... it is far bigger than I had presumed. I wonder if I could soothe it and lead it to yon tower (Castle).

Yes, I believe that was your idea...

He tries to cast, watching the beast closely...

[Private to GM:  13:30, Today: Aethul rolled 14 using 3d6.  Beast Soother w/ Animal Empathy. skill is 12 plus any add from animal empathy.
Can he attempt it again, assuming the beast hasn't become agitated.

As animal empathy is a requisite, it doesnot add a bonus in this case, although it would add to non magical animal handling.

The creature is impressive, and its scales are equivalent to epic plate!
