As they begin to move towards him, Gareth Ralls back to avoid them, using his shield to maximum effect and lashing out with his spell-charged Jo at one of them, in order to release the spell stored within...

Once this is done, he will withdraw down the stairs...he is no swordsman.

He steps forward to assist Gareth. He takes the defense, retreating if he can cover Gareth and do it.
he will parry any attack, then counter attack. But he is covering Gareth's retreat and will pull back with him.

Huh? Sorry, a bit unclear to me. Off he hit me arm, why am I on the ground? If he hit my body, why did I not get to attack and dropped my Jo? Like my character, what just happened? Even on a critical success, how do I loose both my defence AND my attack, and my weapons, and be prone? How does anyone get those sorts of criticals?

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough... The Adept was trying to cover/protect Gareth. He was unable to parry that blow because it was a Critical hit? He has a three and a half foot great sword. And he would have counter-attacked too, although I understand a Crit  (if it really was such) cannot be blocked*.

OOC re the enemy's critical hit on Gareth:
The interpretation of a critical hit negating any defense roll is accurate. Additionally, the Narrator rolled a 12 on the critical hit table which results in the defender dropping any object(s) held. Gareth is not prone and was not denied an attack (though you may not have had any else ready to attack with); you may have misread the GM's post.

Ah, I interpreted that as 'you join him on the ground', not 'your Jo is on the ground. So Gareth's attack becomes a DX check, since he is trying to hit him with a spell, and penalties for injuries are on following rounds, as this happens at the same time, by basic. Since he rolled DX, that was still a hit.

His response would be to run and recover his wounds...as the spell takes effect. Or doesn't.

the one the Adept struck is gravely wounded despite the heavy armor.
Safwa's oponent is able to get back up and ready his sword by the time the construct recovers from being stunned.

Gareth falls back, maintaining his spell and looking for effects, he takes the Jo back from Safwan as he does so. If he has the chance to breathe fire at the one getting up without hitting any of his friends, he does so, but if there are folk in the way, he will not.

[Private to GM: Rolled 7 under will, rolled 11 under modified skill for breathe fire, but 1 over skill to hit. This is only cast if he can do so without a friend between, something I as the player cannot tell, but it would be obvious to him. Melee attack, so no chance if hitting the wrong target though.]

the Adept and Safwan block Gareth from attacking the reaver Safwan had tripped;

He slashes at Safwan for 11 points cutting if the golem cannot dodge,  and is able to parrythe incoming strike by the adept, leaving him turned so that his left flank is to Safwan.

Gareth had better look where he is going as he backs up, because he is only two yards from the edge, and the stairs are only two yards wide.

Gareth will glance behind him briefly as he backs down the stairs, but keep his eyes on the combatants as well.

What about the other combatant...can he be hit? Also, any effect of the previous spell?
