"An aberrant Gate," the brown-haired girl offers. "I was dispelling the thing and it went awry. A flash, lurching stomach, and here we are. Well, here I am, anyway. Talking of which, where is, here'? And I'm Alastrine. Who are you? All of you?"

She turns to the hairy one (Urrun), "Uhh, sorry, me and my sharp tongue. You didn't mean me, did you, when you said 'latrine'? Let's put it down to Gate Fatigue. I usually make armour. Please don't tell anyone I also meddle with Gates. It's supposed to be a secret."

Alastrine adds, "You wanted a latrine? By way of amends for my sharp tongue, here you go," and she points, clicks her fingers and mutters something in a gravelly tone. Soil flows over itself to end in a heap a yard away from the cavity remaining in the ground. About a yard deep, the cavity measures perhaps a yard by a couple of yards.

After studying the well Alastrine announces, "I am loathe to destroy the functionality of the well to the detriment of locals but the current structure needs eradication." In case the hairy one has language problems she translates, "I will destroy the gate but it will take a little while."

She concentrates and makes a pit two yards deep that's a couple of yards away from the current well. The excavated earth moves itself into an irregular raised rampart, sufficient to make the effective depth about three yards. Alastrine repeats this four times so that the newly made irregular-shaped pit is a couple of yards across in each direction.

"So far so good, and now I need a moment."
Actually, she rests for ten minutes. "Fine, next part." Concentrating again, Alastrine forms a wall of earth across the well to one side of the water inlet. It's half a foot thick and some twelve square yards in area which she then turns to stone. After another five minutes break, she repeats the stone wall formation half a foot from the first: sufficient to channel the water to its new reservoir area but not wide enough for a gate to manifest. She finishes off moving earth to open up the channel between the parallel stone walls into the new pit and backfills earth from the surrounding area to behind the two stone walls, moving perhaps another sixteen tonnes of earth!

"There. Done. I need a moment." The woman is clearly worn out. "Would anyone be able to spare some food?" Unless forcibly moved, or threats present themselves, Alastrine will nibble some food, take some water and just rest for half an hour.

"Give me a moment, please, I'd like to try something first," replies Alastrine with a quick smile, her eyes not actually leaving the carved bricks.

She looks down, leaning out, and mutters some gravely-sounding words in a tune that's difficult to make out despite having used it several time.

OOC: Casting Stone Shape, 6FP per cubic yard of worked stone, and a complete ring of 16 bricks plus surrounding mortar is about two cubic foot so no problem on that. Alastrine tries to shape the engraved bricks and their surrounding mortar do that that they flow and flow out of the well.
14:04, Today: Alastrine rolled 9 using 3d6.  Shape earth 15
Success, Cost 6FP

If the engraved bricks are successfully removed, then Alastrine tries to Shape Earth so that earth moves from the surrounding surface so to fill in the missing ring of bricks and mortar:
14:12, Today: Alastrine rolled 9 using 3d6.  Shape earth 15 Cost 2
Success
With the ring help in place magically, she tries Erath to Stone to make the replacement permanenet and all vestiges of the gate gone.
14:13, Today: Alastrine rolled 10 using 3d6.  Earth to stone 15 reduced to 14 for ongoing spell (3FP)
Success

There was some change in the rules for permanancy in DFRPG and DF.  finework that was not stable like a hill would revert to its previous state in 24hrs unless, according to Krom, 10x the cost was spent to make it permanent.  he was basically trying to nerf mages from creating permanent sellable goods like the chain of
essential earth/shape earth/earth to stone(metal) which would give you orichalcum, which is stupidly valuable.

I  think things like walls(if wide enough) should stay.

OOC: The stuff done here is stable. The Shape Earth spell is basically being used as a bulldozer. The shapes produced are potential/kinetic energy-wise stable and IMO should not come under such rulings. Using the same spell to shape stone is also the case: it depends on geometry/phyisical stability as there is no change of material composition.
The Earth to Stone spell is a different thing: for that permanency is the thing.
The rules as presented in Magic are fine. Doing Shape Earth and Earth to Stone, RAW  aren't breaking anything at campaign economics level.
Indeed Earth to Stone, can be earth to metal, at x6 base FP cost, but (from memory*) it explicitly cites "bronze or iron".

Where does "permanent is only for 24 hours "stop? By the same logic, a healed person should become wounded again after 24 hours.
This whole thing is nuts IMO.
WRT orichalcum, frankly a GM allowing that deserves the result. Simply saying to the player "you are taking the pee, stop it!" should be sufficient.

If it all goes "what you did won't matter in 24 h" then it's IMO 100% pointless.
If the RAW in Magic don't apply as written then honestly, as much as I have been enjoying this game, maybe this isn't something I can cope with.
In other words, my plea is to please allow Magic RAW. I will not take the pee.

==============
*I re-read the spell, Earth to Stone spell (Magic p51): "...Turns an item of earth or clay into hard stone (but not gemstone), or turns an item of stone into a simple metal like bronze or iron. For double energy cost, turns an item of earth or clay into metal."
With the above quoted verbatim, I fail to see what the fuss is about.

As no empty containers are forthcoming Alastrine says, "I can make some but I'll need you to bear with me while I recover from those last exertions."

A short while later*, she stands up and tries to shape some stone as if it were potter's clay to form half a dozen** vial-sized containers.
With those then hard as stone once more Alastrine repeat the process but this time fashions stoppers for the vials***, allowing the each hard bottle to deform a clay-soft stopper to make a snug fit (and seal).

After resting for another short while*, the determined woman tries to separate out some of the alchmical fire.

With four vials safely captured Alastrine offers, "I can keep going if you wish but though you might be itching to get away to somwhere else. Keep going? or stop?"

======
OOC: *Actually fifteen minutes unless someone donates some FP to Alastrine. Recovers 4FP and 4 ER.
**Estimated 2 minutes For someone practised in Stone Shaping. Cost: 1FP (after reduction by high ability)
21:54, Today: Alastrine rolled 7 using 3d6.  Shape Stone 15 (for 6 vial bodies)
***Repeat of above but slightly more fiddly, so a little more maintenance. Cost: 1 (after reduction by high ability)
