Meeting in the Ropemaker's Guild,you find the orcish merchant loading gear along with some trollfolk.

"Rushagorn.  I didn't think you would be going back down so soon. I just barely got the rot worm stink out of me gear.", quipped Grohm as he walked up.  He took off his pack and set it under the cart and behind the wheel so that it would be out of the way.

"Did you get my goods and stake money from Darg?"

Dne arrives and approaches cautiously,  his weird bird mask on even tighter than unusual.  In a forebording voice he says,  “I heard there was a job.”

"Good to see you again, Jendrich.", Grohm said, offering a meaty hand.

"Do you think we will have as much fun as the last trip?"

"I can just as easily make it so only mages can see by the light -- but then it won't benefit you.  Or I could make it no brighter than moonlight if that's preferred."

Jendrich smiles as he shakes Grohm'Thal's hand. "I hope not. After all the time Ulo spent making her tunnel, I'd rather not see it brought down by another of those giant worms!"

"Sadly no, um, Jendrich.  I'm, er, I was a research apprentice.  'Knowledge' is a college of magic that starts from detection spells and works up to spells like that, but those are things I'd have learned over the next three years of training -- or not, if I didn't choose a research career path in the end.  The ones I know are mostly pointed at a specific one to remember my way -- rather helpful in an archive the size of a small town, with literally thousands of book shelves and no prior planning in the layout.  Next in line would probably have been one to find a specific item -- say, a particular volume in the archive."

Dne practices covering his eyes.

"Ulo, good to see that you made it. Do you have anything to load into the wagon?", Grohm said, greeting the troll wife.

"Wait.  Golem mage?"  Virgilio's eye aren't actually the size of dinner plates, but that's the simile that comes to mind.

"Yeah, that was pretty much my reaction when we saw the thing..." Jendrich tells Virgilio with a sigh.

Moving closer to Ulo, he adds "I doubt there's much I can do to help, but... I hope I can help you reclaim your home. What happened to you... reminds me too much of what I feared all my life."

"And D'ne, I don't recall which kind, but some golems actually like lightning.  Others enjoy fire.  I haven't studied golems in any detail, but just making one requires many spells and a lot of energy.  Inhabiting one, like a possession?  I'd have to get back to the Library to even figure out how that would work.

"Meantime, I'd suggest we either avoid him, or give him what he wants, if it's possible."

"It mostly seemed to want polite discussion and for me to stop blocking off the tunnels, which is why I'd prefer to move our side tunnel just a little bit off from it's rooms.  Though, I am still curious about what is in the rooms on the other side that we did not explore."

Dne shudders at the mere thought of a peaceful solution to the golem question.

Grohm'Tahl fell in with Jedrich, leaving Syvanus to bring up the third spot. Two good melee fighters backed up by a skilled archer would set doubt in the mind of most threats, he though.

Virgilio stays near the center of the group, holding his staff with glowing end high so the light covers as much space as possible.  He keeps his other hand on a corner post of one of the carts, so he can spare attention to look up and around at the walls and ceilings.

Dne also lingers in the rear for the time being.  He walks about six inches off the ground in order to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Ülo settles into the 'front of the middle'.  Close enough to the front she can call out and steer them if needs be, and rush forward if required, but not so close that sudden happenstance would catch her within it.

"As Tommy said, it's important to remember the past, beyond the stories of your grandmother's time.  Just knowing the goblins were here first is important, especially if you want to understand goblins."

Emphasis mine.  Casting is not Maintaining, unless Gwythaint has ruled otherwise for you.

There are two inherent balances in Mana Enhancer 2 jacking Normal Mana up to Very High, one it doesn't replenish mana spent on maintenance, two all failures are crits (which you already know the second, and I don't know if Gwythaint is allowing the Perk Stabilizing Skill in this game).

Of course the power of Mana Enhancer 2 you already know... Low and No Mana Zones are trivial to you and Normal or higher give (basically) free casting of spells.

Virgilio blinks.  Blinks again.

"Come to think of it, I haven't actually tried it with Apportation, though I did maintain a fairly large Created Fire for several hours just a few days ago.  Hmmm.

OOC: Apportation has a Move of 1.  While Concentrating Virgilio will have a Move of 1.  Move 1 (2mph) is the average human walking speed, 2-3 miles an hour.  Jogging is 4-6mph (Move 2-3), running is defined as more than 6 miles an hour (Move 3+).  So we won't even slow down that much.
A regular hiking speed is Move 1-2 (technically 1.22).  A forced march is considered constant Move 2.
For reference a "ruck march" (US Army) or hump (USMC) is 50 miles in 3 hours which is a sustained Move of 7.8.
Now Ülo is thinking about how to invent Tenser's floating disk spell...

The rumbling voices get louder, and something shuffles to the gate. As Tommy is hiding (successfully) in a bare corridor, this places him out of line of sight of the space beyond the gate, which has swung out into the corridor.

Virgilio slings his crossbow and uses his staff (with its glowing upper tip) as a walking stick, following along near the back of the group.

Grohm held his position and waited for the caravan pass. He held his position behind the group and waited in the dark for a few minutes to see if they were followed.

As Grohm takes the rear, Jendrich continues to guard the front, ready to offer assistance if Tommy runs into anything.

He sticks to about a quarter to a third of the way back fom the front.

it has an arrow and a bolt stuck in it, and has suffered a massive lightning stroke that bypassed  DR., yet still it shambles forward on its 8 legs.

As soon as he is certain the danger has passed, Dne sits down to rest for a few minutes.  He needs his strength back.

Virgilio immediately sees to recocking and reloading his crossbow, then moves forward with it ready to cover the tunnel from which the slorn appeared.

Grohm lowered his halberd. He looked at the beast laying before him. Then he looked back at the backup crew and gave them a nod.

"Ahhh, that's the stuff..."  Dne hoots three times and rises from the floor a new bird.

Jendrich moves closer to the beast, carefully, to make sure it's done for. "Nice shot." He calls out to Dne.

"Thank you.  Any signs of treasure around here?"

Assuming that Ulo will want the meat, Syvanus moves to gut the beast, remembeing that interesting things have been found in a Slorn's stomach.

[Private to GM: Not sure if or what you'd like rolled here. he has tracking, which seems to cover hunting and field dressing as well as Jack of all trades, so should have some skill. He is or course looking for anything of value as well as getting the animaleady for Ulo's spell.]

dungeon butchery is the usual skill, although survival lets you dress  non monsters normally, and monsters at a penalty.
Ulo casts her spell, and the Slorn is skinned and dressed. among the offal, Syvanus finds its gizard, which contains a tangled and foul smelling Bezoar and a couple of polished reddish stones.

"Nah, they traded for lighter goods for the return trip. They just left the cart behind." Jendrich mentions. "A good thing, too. Ulo had enough trouble digging a tunnel for the cart the first time, it would be a pain to do it again."

As Tommy progresses through the corridor, Jendrich prepares to follow in his footsteps, to secure the far end before the rest of the caravan crosses.
