Heh, it just seems a bit odd to me, that a leg or torso has enough air in it to cause any decompression problem, or that it requires the absence of vacuum to function. Water imo is more complicated than space, since it adds mass, disrupts electricity and so forth.
Having the cockpit punctured would be my normal expectation of bad, but then if were using space suits, I'd expect to be both securely strapped in, as well as having vented the cockpit atmosphere, removing the old decompression problem.
Of course its simple to say mechs just arent built for space or vacuum, though it seems like that would be a bit odd, given the age old problem that is aircraft or spacecraft in this instance and that of maintaining ground control.
Anyways, thats just me over analyzing it, being influenced from a tech/engineering background, and having been exposed to way to much Macross and Gundam :)
