The Jail

Lucky and Selvin.

The "jail" is actually an old warehouse that the Queen's forces have converted.  She's arrested so many these days, jail space has become a premium.  You set up as close as you can and observe...

Let's get Perception checks from both of you gentlemen.

Also, please let me know if you're doing anything interesting as you look the place over.

Thanks

Re: The Jail

Selvin looked around slowly, walking nearby but not too close to their destination, just casually eyeing the area and the building. He then looked for a nearby rooftop that might give them a better vantage point, a perch to stay at for a bit where they wouldn't be easily seen. It was annoying to have to walk, and then climb, everywhere, but his symbiote was FAR too easily noticed.

Once settled and hopefully hidden, he looked at Lucky. "So. For scoutin'. I can summon some invisible or inconspicuous creatures t'see about goin' in, checkin' things out...but if they get noticed, it raises the alarm, just like it would if we went in an' got caught."

OOC: Wow. What an amazing roll.
Will cast See Invisibility and Detect Magic.

16:07, Today: Selvin Larst rolled 17 using 1d20+15.  Perception.

Re: The Jail

Lucky looked at all the places around them trying to find one that they could use to scout out the place and still be inconspicuous.  14:30, Today: Lucky Six-Fingers rolled 23 using 1d20+16.  perception.

Once they both found something and Selvin spoke to him about things he could do, Lucky liked the concept of using something else to do the scouting.  "Are you able to see through their eyes or will they just come back and report what they saw?  I think if you can do different things I would like to know what is on the roof and if there is a way in from up there.  Then a good look around the outside as well as the grounds nearby.  One thing that we could check as well would be any sewer system that might be here."

Re: The Jail

Selvin glanced at Lucky and shook his head even though he smiled slightly. "Nah. Sorry, I'm not that cool. Normally I'm summonin' creatures t'fight for me, not go sneakin' about."

He continued on, "However, one big difference is that when I don't have 'Zak' summoned up, I can summon things that stick around for over 10 minutes at a shot instead'a just like...a minute total." He gave a shrug. "Still...dunno if that's long enough t'scout the place out really well. But I could bring in a few invisible stalkers. Or air elementals. Or...shadow demons, though those are only good at night. Well...not GOOD but..."

He frowned and glanced at Lucky, "Or I can just summon up some help t'break in an' free everyone so it's not obvious it was us or who we were after. Heh. Or a few succubus...succubi?...t'charm their way in. Or...I can go invisible an' go peek. Or make yuou invisible. LOTS of options, buddy. Whaddya think?"

Re: The Jail

In reply to Selvin Larst (msg # 4):

As the two of you discuss plans, you notice a few things.

First, there is a sewer line running under the warehouse.  It must have been an old livestock pen or abattoir, because there seems to be a large drain for mucking right outside a back door.

The building is essentially a long rectangle.  Most of it is probably open, though there should be a partial second story.  You can see windows near the roof line indicating there is something up there.

There are three doors in.  A large one open to the mainstreet.  A side one that leads out onto a pier.  And one at the back, right next to the drain.

They have crossbowmen, two, up on the roof.  Each entrance has at least one guard, with about four on the front one.  That door seems to be acting as the command post.

You can't see inside to see the layout.

You notice that the troops seem well trained.  They aren't acting too bored and are staying sharp.  One of them, a woman near the front door, screams spelltosser.  She's got a robe embroidered with all kinds of mystic looking patterns.  Nothing that seems to be magical in and of itself.

There is also a very, very large woman in full plate.  She might actually be an ogress.  You can't see her face because of the helmet.  You don't think she's in charge.  That seems to be the spell tosser.  But the ogress is obviously the heavy here.

And yes, all the guards are women.  In fact, now that you think of it, you haven't seen a male soldier since you entered the city.

There is one other thing that catches your eye Lucky.  You don't seem to be the only ones casing this place.  A couple has passed by on the street, together or seperately, three times now.  They've changed clothes each time.  The woman is pretty good.  You could only tell she was the same because you were looking for it.  The guy...not as good in his disguise.  He's too tall.

Currently, the guy has finished his walk by and is heading around the corner towards an area that seems to be abandonded.

Re: The Jail

After discussing what they both had seen, Lucky tells Selvin of the man and woman he has been observing and as the man moves around a corner to what seemed to be an abandoned area, Lucky says, "Do we care much for the man and woman?  If we could somehow do the break-in and pin it on them while getting our target out, that would be optimal.  Perhaps, we can use the sewer system to get him out and with a bit of distraction it shouldn't be too difficult."

Selvin considered things for a moment after Lucky pointed out the other 'group' casing the place. He finally shook his head, still frowning lightly. "So my biggest concern's that they'll mess up our plans, goin' too early, alertin' guards if they fail, whatever. OR," He held up a finger and looked at Lucky, "they're here t'break out the same person we are an' spirit them away from us, or just get in our way. Y'know?"

He shrugged. "I think we should find out more about them. Otherwise we gotta move faster so they don't wreck out move."

Selvin let out a small chuckle and shook his head as the other man just darted away. He then talked to himself, big conversationalist, eh?" He mimed a mock-stern expression, "no! lucky! shut up! you're talkin' too much!"

He blinked and realized he didn't have Zac with him which meant two things. One - he felt naked again. Two - he really WAS talking to himself for the first time in a long time...

He let out a sigh and headed after Lucky, staying back a bit, keeping an eye out for danger or anyone noticing Lucky.

The man and woman freeze as you enter and begin speaking.  They look at each other, than at you, and then at each other again.

The woman tosses the man's jacket aside, apparently so she has clear access to the short sword at her side.  It's obvious to the two of you that she probably has only been using that sword for...maybe three months?

The man seems a bit more befuddled, although it looks like he has deep callouses on his hand which could correspond to some kind of weapon training.  But since he had no idea you guys were there...how much could he have?

They both take a step back.  "Uhmmm...yeah.  Trust is rarer than fresh vegetables these days.  Maybe you wanna give us some names?  That might go a long way towards...you know.  Helping things not go crazy here."

Selvin, you do not currently have Zac up, right?

My other friend here is Lucky. As in his name. Not sure if he's actually...lucky or not in a fortune-fate sort of sense yet." He frowned lightly at Lucky and then shook his head.

He continued on. "We were up on a rooftop nearby watchin' this place, figurin' out how t'break out a specific prisoner. Benda, so we could get the word t'Tarrov that we're back." He smiled. "Like you said...trust is rare, an' we don't know most o'the people he's surrounded himself with now he's gone underground. We're willin' t'do the work an' break Benda out an' hand her over...if you're part o'Tarrov's crew. Lucky, you are pretty sure what you already suspected.  These two are probably rebels.  Probably here to break Benda out.  And probably aren't up to the job.  The man seems to understand that last fact.  The woman doesn't.

The man probably has feelings for her and has resigned himself to dying with her.

They both strike you as artists of some kind.  Actors maybe.

The two of them flinch when you describe Tarrov Selvin.  But they really blink when you mention that you were partners with him at the start.

They glance at each other and then back at you.  They obviously aren't sure what to do next.

The man licks his lips.  "So...you say you are opposed to the queen?  But why would you be?  Who in their right mind would oppose her?  And if you are in opposition, where have you been?"  He blinks.  "Not that we know anything about the rebels or anything."

The woman rolls her eyes.

Re: The Jail

At a glance, it's obvious going through the front is the worst possible choice.  There's always a lot of activity.  Lots of eyes and hands and feet about.  Even with a distraction, it would be the main focus as it seems the main entrance and egress.

The side door onto the street isn't as well guarded.  But it's visible from the street.  And easily visible from the front if anyone just peeks around the corner.  Entry is possible there, if you're quick, quiet, quiet, quiet, and more quiet.  Also quick.

The back is a bit more promising.  Again, not as heavily guarded.  And while still visible from the street, it's not as accessible from the side guards and certainly not from those at the front entrance.  You both notice there is a bird's nest built above the door.  It's odd but not necessarily alarming.  There's just something about it that draws both of your attention.

The last possibility that you can see is the roof.  There are two crossbowmen walking the roof, mostly watching the street.  They check in by leaning over and yelling down to the guard station at the front, but only at what appears half hour intervals.  Otherwise, no one seems to pay them attention.  They aren't visible from the street the entire time.  But you would have to hit them, again, quick and quiet.

You can't rule out that there is a sewer line entrance.  But nothing you can observe from up here is able to give you much to go on.

Re: The Jail

Selvin looked around as they scoped the place out, it's various entrances, exits and defenses. He eyed the two crossbow guards on the rooftop. He could get close and lay one out pretty quick - but he couldn't guarantee both before an alarm was raised.

He could get both of them over there, possibly unseen as well, and that might do it - but it was still tricky. Not that he expected that the alarm wouldn't raised at some point regardless. They could try to avoid it, but he bet on it being inevitable since it was better to try and plan around both success and failure for him.

The rooftop walkers would be a problem regardless unless...He looked at Lucky. "So there's the roof, but takin' both out quick an' quiet could be tricky before they raised an alarm." He nodded towards the other 'good' entry point. "Back door would be second best but honestly still have t'worry about those on the roof hearin' or spottin' things."

He frowned. "We could check for sewer access but...bein' caught in an enclosed space that may or may not go where we want it or lead in to traps..." He didn't bother finishing the sentence.

He shrugged. "My votes roof. If I get us over there unseen, can you take one o'the guards out quicker'n they can shout out? I'll try t'give us surprise, o'course."

Selvin summoned his symbiotic friend before the shift change and then stayed low and out of sight. Once the shift change happened, when the two guards were distracted, he cast Invisibility first on himself, then on Lucky.

He then took to the air and flew Lucky and himself up and over to the other roof - and unlike before, there were no wings flapping to keep them aloft, just magic flight instead.

He set Lucky down, tapped him to indicate the guard he should take, and then got ready for the attack on his own guard, counting silently in his head, moving as little as possible before the time to strike.

Re: The Jail

In reply to Selvin Larst (msg # 42):

Yeah.  That's what I was expecting.

The two of you make quick work of the roof men.

The hatch opens onto a short ladder going down.  It looks like the warehouse has a large, open area occupying most of the space.  There is a second floor balcony running along the eastern wall.  It must have been offices when this was a warehouse. Now it appears to be guard rooms.
There are three rooms along the platform.  Two have their doors open.  One is shut.

To the west, in the large open area, the warehouse shelves have been removed and replaced with cages.  The cages are all fairly packed.  Seems the Queen has been busy arresting people.

As the two of you get the lay of the land, you can hear a commotion.  It sounds like the diversion is going off.  There's a lot of shouts in the direction of the front door The far west.  A bell starts to sound.  Guards pour out of the two rooms with open doors on the platforms.  The guards are hustling towards the front of the building.

There seems to be some kind of protocol about such matters though.  Five guards, all fairly tough looking women in plate mail, are taking up positions along the balcony, though they seem more concerned with watching the cages on the main floor.

Two other guards are walking towards the ladder to the roof.

I am assuming you guys were peeking down.  I am not assuming you have entered the building proper yet.

There are a total of seven guards on the balcony.  Two are coming towards the ladder leading up to the roof.

You have no idea how many guards are down on the main floor still.

Re: The Jail

Selvin poked his head down, quietly, hanging upside down in the air, technically 'flying' though not moving once his head was low enough to see. He took in as much as he could and then slid back up and righted himself, hovering above the roof by half an inch. He relayed what he saw to Lucky quietly.

Then he said, "Two are comin', I think they're gonna come up. I think we're gonna have t'take 'em out quietly again before we can go in. Thoughts?"

OOC: Well, poop. There goes my plan then to fly straight up WAY up and then use Feather Fall to slowly come back down to the roof (including the corpses so I don't have to keep a hold of them).

Where is the trapdoor that goes down in to the building located - middle of the roof, near one corner or side or what?

Selvin thought quickly as they didn't have a lot of time. He looked at Lucky, "Come with me." He flew over and quickly hefted the first body and then the second as well under the tigertaur's upper arms. "Okay, Lucky - don't think I'm your mount or anythin', but hop on the back."

Once Lucky was on and hanging on, Selvin flew silently over the side of the building where there was no one guarding and no door to guard, to just below the roofline, so as to not be immediately seen when the newcomers head on to the roof. "Okay. Let's be quiet but ready. We go up once they're on the roof."

Re: The Jail

Not sure about the plan, Lucky did as Selvin asked.  It may have been too hard to hide up top for him since it wasn't completely dark and he didn't have anything to hide behind besides perhaps the lid to the trap door and that would last all of two seconds.  So, he jumped on Selvin's back with a grin.

"I will be ready once you go back up!"  Lucky put one of his Kukri away and grabbed his starknife.  He would lead with that and then his Kukri when it was time.

OOC: No wings anymore, but that's not really the point, LOL!

Selvin bit back a curse as he...or more accurately Zac...was spotted. He flew up over the lip of the rooftop, dropping the bodies as he moved towards the two guards. He trusted Lucky would 'dismount' on his own and didn't bother moving him off.

He quickly closed the distance, slamming one tauric fist in to one of the guards to try and put them down as quickly as possible since they didn't have surprise necessarily on their side this time, wasn't able to move in a way to pounce on them as usual - and didn't really want to raise the alarm.

OOC: I'm guessing he can't charge due to the way he's having to move up and then across the roof, which means only one attack. Hit AC 28 for 31 damage total.

The inside of the warehouse is still a buzz.  Four guards are up on the platform, two guarding the stairs down to the floor and two standing beside the door at the end of the platform.

You guess there are about twelve more guards on the floor below.  But it's tough to be sure from here.

Selvin's lip curled for only a moment at the dead guards, then he was all business once more. He carefully poked his head back down again to see what he could see, leaving enough room for Lucky or switching out so the other man could look as well. Two sets of eyes were better than one, and they had three pair between them!

"I count four higher up, an' quite a few down on the floor. Seems like a lot. We can try an' sneak but...not sure how far I'd get, an' I can only cast Invisibility a couple more times." Pause. "I could cast a summon spell..."

Selvin bit his lip from inside his symbiotic ally for a moment as he thought. "Well...my options are a bit limited while Zac is here, but I got a few spells I can use without dismissin' him."

He continued, "I assume more might be better in this case, so if I go a bit lower I can bring more..." He began listing off possibility. "Well. If I use my highest magic, I could summon several Bralani or.." He hesitated. "It would definitely not look great...but I have some demon and devil types I could summon possibly too, again with my highest magic only for those."

He spoke on, "With the other lower spell, I could summon perhaps a couple us-sized air elementals - fire ones might be bad in there. Or some dire bats. Or some lantern archons."

Just to be clear:  while it would be great to free all the prisoners, most are locked in cells on the lower floor.  The prisoner you want is probably in that locked room at the end of the platform.

So you only have the four guards up on the platform to contend with.  For a couple of rounds anyway.  It would probably take that long for all the floor guards to get up here.

Selvin cast Invisibility on Lucky and then began silently counting. He then prepared himself mentally and cast a summoning spell to bring forth some celestial aid. He grinned as five creatures answered his call!

They floated in the air, poised elf-like archers with silver-white hair the color of a lightning strike whipping about them, their eyes swirling with vibrant colors, scimitars in hand, longbows on their backs.

Selvin gave them a nod of respect and thanked them for coming, then outlined what he wanted - three of them to go after the guards on the platform, the other two to attack the guards on the floor. Once the guards on the platform were down, the three were to aid in taking out any other guards or hostile forces.

Selvin then followed them down the hatch and inside to help go after the platform guards.

The guards are pretty well trained though.  At least the ones on the platform.  They take the first volley of arrows and begin to gather into a formation, shields coming off backs.

The two guards in front of the door glance at each other.  One of them moves down the platform to help her comrades.  The other one takes a stance in front of the door.  Sorry Lucky.  At the moment you can't open the door because a stout warrior is standing in front of it.

You can pick the lock though since you're invisible.  It opens rather easily under your skilled fingers.

With the dwarf eliminated Lucky takes off the hood from the prisoner.  First Lucky looked to make sure it is the right person and then says, "I am here to break you out of here.  When I open the door you need to follow directly behind me, understand?

If the hands are tied, Lucky will cut or unlock the bonds.  Before he does any of that he checks quickly for possessions on the dwarf and casts detect magic to see if there is any in the room as well.

Re: The Jail

Having freed up the door and removed the biggest, or at least nearest, obstacle for Lucky that he was aware of, Selvin turned his attention to the other guards on the platform. He charged the nearest one, intending to help out his summoned allies while also clearing away, hopefully, any potential pursuers when they left. So he pounced on to the guard and unleashed a quick succession of attacks, some better aimed than others.

OOC: Charge pounce! No Nat 1s at least (tho there was a 2 and a 3 in there lol)
Hit AC 20 for 21 dmg and 1 electric.
Hit AC 24 for 26 dmg and 2 electric.
Hit AC 24 for 21 dmg and 5 electric.
Hit AC 32 for 24 dmg and 2 electric.
Hit AC 19 for 21 dmg and 3 electric.

09:12, Today: Selvin Larst rolled 20,24,24,32,19 using d20+17,d20+17,d20+17,d20+17,d20+17.  Charging Pounce on guard (power attack & arcane strike).
09:13, Today: Selvin Larst rolled 21,1,26,2,21,5,24,2,21,3 using 2d6+18,d6,d8+18,d6,d8+18,d6,2d6+18,d6,2d6+18,d6.  Damage (extra d6 is electricity).

Re: The Jail

In reply to Lucky Six-Fingers (msg # 86):

The dwarf must have been some kind of priestess Lucky.  There's a holy symbol that looks somewhat demonic.  There's a small satchel by the side of the chair with three flasks in it.  You recognize two as poisons of various kinds.  The third seems to be a healing potion of some variety.

The woman gasps when you lift her hood and nods, seeming to grasp the situation quickly.  Her legs are numb...she's been tied up for quite a while. But she manages to stumble along behind you.

The guards are surprised by your sudden onslaught Selvin.  You take out one of them quickly and manage to lay into another one.

But they also seem well trained.  They recover quickly and counter, slashing into Zac19 pts damage

The celestials manage to mop up the ones you aren't on top of just a moment too late to keep you from getting hurt.  Then it's just the guard who's wobbly from your attack left on the platform.

The guards on the floor apparently weren't part of the A team.  The celestials attacking them have managed to kill about half of them.

And then you hear the main warehouse doors start to slide open...

Looks like someone outside finally heard the ruckus inside.  Best get while the gettin's good

Re: The Jail

Selvin looked at his summoned allies, gesturing at the one guard still up on the platform, then towards the door opening. "When you're done here, go engage the ones coming in, slow them down or take them down. Thanks."

He headed back to the door where Lucky had gone in. "Hey, we need t'go. More guards are comin'."

Re: The Jail

Just as Selvin appeared in the door, Lucky was already on the move having gathered up the supplies on the dwarf and the satchel.  The woman moved slowly but it was enough for Lucky to get her arm over his shoulder and help her up and out the door.  "Can we fly with her?"  Lucky inquired as they moved towards the ladder to the roof.

In reply to Lucky Six-Fingers (msg # 90):

Your new found friend is weak, but she is hanging in there Lucky.  She should be able to fly.

Getting to the rooftop, you can see that the warehouse is being surrounded by guards.  Over head, in the distance, you can see the unmistakeable outline of a dragon flying closer.

You can take to the air or jump into the river.  There is of course the 'fight your way through the thick of them option' as well.

Re: The Jail

Selvin started to head back up the way they'd come but stopped suddenly, eyes going wide, mouth dropping open. "Uhhhhh....THAT....is a problem." Flying looked to be a bad option with a dragon in the air.

He shook his head. "River it is!" He scooped the former prisoner p in his arms, trusting Lucky to take care of himself, and jumped for the river. Well...flew towards the river, attempting to shield his passenger as much as possible.

Re: The Jail

Lucky saw the dragon as well and decided a second after Selvin that the river was the best option so he too jumped for it trying not to leave to big of a splash in the water.

Re: The Jail

In reply to Lucky Six-Fingers (msg # 93):

The two of you dunk in as the air behind you suddenly fills with crossbow bolts.

The river tastes as bad as it smells.  Though you have to admit Selvin...less people in Korvosa means less sewage.  So it's actually better than you remember it.

You lack that basis of comparisson Lucky>  This river, like every river near a city you've had to jump into in order to avoid guards...there's more of them then one might think...tastes and smells like shit.

But better to be alive and needing a bath rather then being dead and not caring about it.

The two of you rise to gulp some air just as the dragon arrives over head.  You can see it open it's mouth and fire glowing inside.  You duck back underwater as the dragon strafes the river.

Letting the current take you seems the safest bet.  You both manage to come up on the far river back about a half mile downstream, taking cover in the wreckage of a mill.

Your new found friend is coughing up water.  "Did...did...Tar...rov send you?"  she manages at last.

Re: The Jail

Selvin had no need to come up for air - though 'breathing' the gross water of the river wasn't that fun with Zac's gills. However, the prisoner they'd just help escape DID need air, so he made sure she didn't drown as he and his symbiot swam. They were not as graceful in the water as they once had been, since Selvin had revamped his friend - but at least he'd left the gills!

It was a little nerve-wracking to have a dragon trying to breathe fire on them, he admitted to himself and telepathically to Zac, who agreed wholeheartedly.

Once they were a bit farther away, and possibly a bit safer, he put her up above the water line and his head as well. He smiled at her question and shook his head. "Nope! Tarrov's a friend o'mine, though. He started the rebellion while me an' a few others went t'find out more about what happened t'make the Queen go all insane. Now...we need t'meet back up with him, only he's gone underground. So we figured we'd rescue you an' see if you'd let him know that we were back so we could meet."

He paused and then belatedly said, "Oh. Right. I'm Selvin Larst. That's Lucky Six-Fingers, though Tarrov hadn't met him before. But he'll know my name, as well as Izzick an' Zuni."

Re: The Jail

Lucky lived up to his name as he sprang into the water just in time to dodge a barrage of arrows.  Then again when the dragon swept the river with its breath.  Lucky could feel the water heat up above his head but thankfully it wasn't enough to burn him.  A few times he emerged up for a gulp of air and a quick glance to see where Selvin was headed.

Once across the far bank of the river and downstream by a good amount, Lucky saw that the dragon had lost them and there seemed to be no pursuit by the guards either, Lucky and the others left the river and made for the mill.  A quick use of his cloak had him clean and dry in a moment.

"Now that was FUN!!"  Lucky said once the two were done speaking.  "So, think you can get in contact with Tarrov without getting caught?"
