The Beginning of the End

The door opens easily enough.  Just a crack.  Just enough to peek through.

On the other side is a vast chamber, obviously too large to be on the opposite side of the wall you cut the door into.

There aren't any light sources inside.  But from the little light streaming through on your side, you can see what looks like a table with bowls full of gems right ahead.  There seem to be barrels...barrels...beside the table filled with coins that shine like silver and gold.

The room seems to stretch on past that.  But you can't make it much else without going inside and shining a light on things.

Selvin, Izzick, and Chandanar follow you both through the door.  It shuts behind them and disappears into the air.

"Well...whatever we decide to do, finding a way outta here should be our second concern."

Chandanar glances around the room.  "We got that sword that's supposed to be able to kill the Queen.  And she's...I dunno...some kinda prophet for a dragon god who wants to take over the world.  So I'm guessing  we want to stop her.

"And if that halfling wasn't lying, we need to do it tonight.  Before she summons this big, bad thing."

Hearing that there was not a single piece of magic inside the vault put a frown on Lucky's face.  It was short-lived though as he caught Zuni out of the corner of his eye as she began to pocket some of the larger gems.

Why the hell not he told himself and at that moment he earned another name... Lucky Stickyfingers... he too stuffed some decent-looking gems, diamonds, and other expensive-looking trinkets into his pack while heading to the large vault door.  "Might as well!"

Chandanar pockets an emerald necklace.

The door is definitely a vault type.  And it's trapped.  It's easy to tell that from this side.  The trap is an electrocution type.  Someone trips the lock on the other side and the metal door gets volted up from a magical wand on this side.

It shouldn't be too difficult to take apart, right?

I will need a roll for this one someone.

Thanks

Selvin was very interested in the wealth around them. This was more than he'd ever dreamt of before. But...he was cognizant of the fact that they were in a bit of a hurry and they shouldn't just try to loot everything.

He let out a small sigh and turned towards the door, but stayed back to let the 'professionals' work. "Take your time an' take care. Don't wanna get blowed up - though we might be on the right side of a trap in here since usually y'wanna keep people OUT, right?"

In reply to Lucky Six-Fingers (msg # 13):

Sorry Lucky.  Should have mentioned that the room was pretty big.  The spell just didn't reach that far.  But it was still active as you got closer, hence how you all noticed it.  My bad.

The trap is actually pretty complex Lucky and Zuni.  It turns out to require some effort...

Do you want to just take it apart so you can open the door?  Or do you want that wand?  You can try to take it out whole so you can use it.

Let me know.  Moving on in the meantime.

The door slides open quite silently.  It's almost surprising how quiet this thing is.

You are looking out into a hallway that runs north/south.  You seem to be about in the middle of it.  There is another vault door across from you.  The hall itself continues both north and south about 50' each way and then turns to the west at a corner.

You cannot hear anything.  Mostly because someone has placed a fairly high level enchantment on the hallway, snuffing out all sound.

Lucky can chime in here, but I think that we are going to disarm the trap and take the wand.  Not sure what you mean by take it out whole, but if you are going to let us walk down the hallways with a trap rigged door then that could be fun too.  :)

The lack of sound was unnerving.  Zuni looked down at her feet as they crept down the hallway, expecting to hear her soft foot falls but there was nothing.  She tried snapping her fingers, and heard nothing.  Very unnerving.

The young woman paused for a moment, unslinging her back pack and rooting around inside of it.  She pulled out the sword, The Sword, and tied it to her hip opposite of her Aldori blade.  When the moment came to need it, she wanted it ready.  She also checked to make sure that the small vials in the pouches on her belt were well stocked and ready to use, whether that meant making things go boom or healing injuries.

Lastly, she pulled out a worn looking banner and tied it around the top of her head like a bandana, leaving a section available to pull across her face should the need arise.

The hallway turns and heads west.  After another hundred feet or so, you begin to hear your footsteps again.

About at the same point, you come to a branch.  The hall continues west about thirty feet and opens into a large, brightly lit room.  The archway into it is covered by a thick, gauzy kind of curtain.  So you can't make out many details from here about what's inside said room.

There is also a short hallway on your right.  It is unlit, but seems to extend back about forty feet or so before ending in a rather solid looking wooden door.

You cannot hear anything other than your breathing.  It's not because of a silent enchantment.  Just because things are quiet.

For now.

As Zuni moved forward and to the curtain, Lucky had both his blades in his hands ready to pounce on anything that may try to hurt Zuni or Selvin.

The Beginning of the End

Selvin let out a snort and rolled his eyes at the two of them. Zuni was a bit of a flirt. Who knew when she was completely kidding or just partially joking around. Lucky might be too, or might be really in to her.

"Stay alert, Lucky."

But he focused on the task at hand. He was ready to fly in at top speed if Zuni ran in to trouble, if he heard sounds that indicated that. He trusted in her abilities, though, and figured she'd probably be fine.

<puprle>Zuni</purple>, you skulk like the skulker you are.  Not the monsters called Skulkers.  But some normal person who is good at skulking.  That's you.  The second one.

As you approach the curtain, you can make out some movement beyond it.  It looks like at least four people sitting around a table, maybe playing cards.

You also notice the curtain is moving slightly in the breeze.  Except there is no breeze.

Zuni looked back at the group and held up 4 fingers.  That should let the others know how many she had found.  The curtain moving in the non-existent breeze she did not like.  That smelled like magic, and not the nice pokeable magic like Selvin used.  This might be something else, and she was uncomfortable with something else magic.

Peering through the curtain, Zuni tried to see who these four people might be.  Were they all dressed like guards?  Did one stand out more than the others?  What was it Quicklime had said?  They have red eyes?

Selvin looked surprised, genuinely, when the curtain moved on its own - it wasn't an invisible being behind the curtain...the curtain wasn't a curtain. He let out a small groan and shook his head. He disliked those kinds of creatures.

He flew forward at the creature, charging it at and ripping at it with Zac's magically-enhanced appendages, trying to pave the way for Zuni and Lucky to go after the beings beyond.

Selvin flinched instinctively when the creature attacked him and the symbiote, but immediately realized it unfounded. The creature was using acid, which he had made Zac more resistant, along with a couple other things, when he last re-shaped them. It hadn't been with this specific creature in mind, just an in-general sort of precaution. But it was nice to see it pay off already.

He kept concentrating on the creature for the moment, to keep it off his friends, even though he knew that there were other threats in further in to the room.

Lucky saw the thing move towards Selvin so took his chances to get past the curtain or whatever it was.  Lucky took a few steps and jumped against the wall, about 4ft up, and when he kicked off the wall he did a somersault in the air.  Coming out of the somersault he landed about 10ft in the room on his feet ready to act.

Since that action was in response to my question can I say it happened last round and now make my first move now inside the room?

Selvin and Zac mostly resisted the acid. It did burn them a little bit, but nowhere near as bad as it could have been. Zac made a small noise of pain, but that was it. Selvin was starting to be REALLY glad that he had crafted his friend to be resistant to acid - and that he was taking this creature on and not Zuni.

They lashed out at the oozy creature once more with as much power as they could manage, but some of the attacks were not as well aimed as before.

Zuni glanced at all the women.  All of the tall women.  All of the muscular women.  She felt very short.  "....why is everyone in this place taller than me?" she muttered.  And they were all between her and that guy in the armor with the medallion.

Zuni raced forward, drawing her sword.  "Help.  Help.  The Dragons are loose." she said, diving between Brutes 1 and 2 to slide under the table.  There were too many Brutes between her and the finger wiggler so she hoped that by ducking under the table, she could use it as cover.

Lucky watched as Zuni made her heroic attempt to get to the target in the back by sliding under the table.  The maneuver actually aided Lucky.  As she went under the table the two men began to go for her which opened up the top of the table for a tumble assault.

Lucky ran and jumped up onto the table to the opposite side of where Zuni attacked, which would afford him a flanking position.  He bounced off the table and as he came down he slashed with one of his kukri.

"Nice move but I don't think they bought it," Lucky said with a chuckle.

He seems to pay you little mind, instead focusing on the priest as Zuni and Lucky start to hustle him down the side corridor towards the cells.

You see lizard raise his sword and throw it.  There's a loud zipping sound.

Lucky and Zuni, you both grab Red Eyes and start to get him through the door, when something comes whistling up behind you.

There's a shout and then the two of you, Red Eyes, and Chandanr are being hurled through the doorway due to the force of some impact.  Lucky, you take 18 pts damage.  Zuni, you take 14

The four of you come to a rest in the hallway.  Red Eyes groans but seems to be okay

"Lucky?  Chandy?  You dead?" She spared a quick look to her companions and then glared down the hallway at the lizard thing.  "What in the hells was that?  I've never seen a sword blow knock 4 people around like that unless there was a Bard spinning a wild tale."

So much blood.. Lucky hadn't felt that injured but where did it come from?  He then heard Zuni cry out.  Lucky turned to see that Chandanar was down and bleeding profusely.  Zuni began to run towards him but Lucky didn't.  Instead, Lucky kept with the priest and got him to the cells to open them up and perhaps give his new friends some added power to deal with the lizardman.

"Get them out of the cells, NOW!" Lucky told the man.

Once the priest did so, Lucky had the potion in hand that would allow him to control the black dragon.  He drank it down, hoping he wouldn't need it.  Then called to the dragons, "Can you help my friends.  They are battling a lizardman that is hell-bent on stopping us from freeing you."

Lucky, Red Eyes is staring at the Lizard Man with eyes wide with fear.

He shakes his head when you yell at him and moves without any further coercion.  He seems to be afraid.  Very afraid.

"I release you!" he shouts.

The dragons start to come out of their cells.

Quicklime frowns at the battle down the hall.  "Oh.  This sucks."

Forestkiller shakes his head.  "No.  Can't you feel it?  They have something with them."

Quicklime frowns and then both dragons turn their heads towards Zuni...

Meanwhile

The Lizard Man takes the hits, seemingly indifferent.  Although Zac left some nasty gashes this go round.

It reaches into it's mouth and plucks out one of it's teeth.  The tooth grows quickly into a  black long sword....

Meanwhile

The partial priest is shaking when you reach him Zuni.  He can't seem to move his right arm and is trying to turn himself over with his left.  You can hear he's not so much breathing as rattling.  It's that rattle.  You've heard it many, many times in your life.

Chandanar manages to flip himself over.  His lower half is spilling out on to the floor.

"Zun...Zunsters? I'm so sorry. I was the one who was eating up all the good rations when everyone was asleep-"

He seizes up, arching what's left of his back, gritting his teeth.

"I'm fine.  This doesn't hurt-"

He seizes up again.

"Oh fuck who I am kidding?  This hurts like hell.  Zuni-"  He grabs at your sleeve with his left arm.  He's staring towards you, though you aren't quite sure he can really see you at this point.

"Please...the pouch with the red lettering...All the good potions...for you guys...please...if I gotta die I don't want it to be for nothing.  All this crazy shit...the plague...playing that stupid game with Pig and those Tigers...getting swallowed by the worm and that castle...I don't want it to be for nothing.  Please...PLEASE...end this.  Make her...stop...please...you guys...make her..."

He doesn't finish.  The hand goes limp and what little light there was in his eyes goes out.

Chandanr dies.

Zuni was silent as Chandanar passed from her world, yet tears could be seen lining her cheeks.  Zuni did not have an easy life and had seen death before, enough for her to be desensitized towards it.  Chandanar was different.  He wasn't some random folk from the street that Zuni did not know.  She had known Chandanar.  He was a friend.

Zuni cuffed away her tears as she reached for the pouch with red lettering.  This pouch, she slung over her shoulders as she rose back to her feet.  Glaring at the Lizard thing, she wiped away her tears one last time.  Her hand instinctively went to the hilt of her duelling blade, her primary weapon, but then a thought occurred to her.  Lizard thing.  She had a sword that was supposed to be good against Lizard things.

The longsword slid eagerly from its scabbard as Zuni ran towards the Lizard thing.

I am assuming I have heard the name of Zon Kuthon before.  He is a deity so shouldn't be too hard.

"Zon Kuthon you say?  I don't know anything about him but that he is a god or something.  Well, you are free as I said you would be.  Be gone from this place so you don't get controlled then."

Lucky took out his blades and ran back into the fray hoping to be of some use.

As he entered the hall again he saw Zuni with Chandanar who looked like he wasn't moving at all.  He then saw her grab the longsword that the two dragons had talked about.  "Yes Zuni, that blade will be effective against the servant of Zon Kuthon, so say the dragons."  Lucky ended up next to her and could see clearly that Chandanar was dead.  He hadn't known the priest long but he had done well by Lucky on a number of occasions he was needed.  "Let's avenge his death, Zuni!"

Re: The Beginning of the End

The symbiote staggered and let out a terrible pained cry. It would have been banished back to it's own plane of existence with the might of that last blow, but Selvin would not let go. He forced his will in to their link, yanked a small portion of his own life force from his body and shoved in the way of part of the blow. It still grievously wounded Zac, and then hurt Selvin as well, but they were both still standing, though Zac was dripping blood and gore.

Then they let out a roar together and renewed their attack once more, perhaps for the final time.

OOC: Fortitude Save 33, but it still is enough to start hurting Selvin as well regardless.
Hit AC 27 for 26 dmg & 1 electric. Hit AC 33 for 22 dmg & 3 electric. Miss with AC 21.

Re: The Beginning of the End

"Hey, Lizard!" Zuni shouted.  "Don't care who you serve, you've pissed me off!"  The longsword flashed as she unleashed a torrent of attacks against Zon-Kuthons Lizard avatar.

At the end of her session of slashes, Zuni reached out with her free hand to grab hold of the larger creature.  "C'mere and get killed!"

OOC:
Calling out Challenge on the Lizard.
Zuni Runesong rolled 25, 31, 19, and 30 for 44, 42, 44, and 42 points of damage
Grapple attempt was a 40 (Natural 20)

Re: The Beginning of the End

Lizard Man makes no noise as the three/four of your descend on it.  It slashes back, narrowly missing Lucky, before you all land your blows.

It doesn't bleed.  More like it comes apart as smoke.  It's eyes seem to linger in the air a moment as the rest of it's body comes apart.  And then it's gone.

The dragons have come out into the hallway.

"Right," says Forestkiller.  "You did your part.  We should do ours.

"You are going to use that,"
he points at your sword Zuni, "To kill her...the Queen I mean...right?

"Once she is out of the way, we can clear out the reptiles who sided with her.  That would be our pleasure."

Re: The Beginning of the End

Once the creature...disappeared? Dissipated? Turned to smoke or whatever. Selvin fell to one knee with a grunt. He turned back towards where the 'dragons' were and called out, "Man, Chandanar, you've got your work cut o..."

He stopped as he finally saw the body on the ground. His breath caught in his throat and his eyes went wide. He staggered forward, almost drunken-looking, "Nonononono."

He crashed to his knees next to his friend, tears starting to fall. "but you can't be dead. we're so close t'the end."

Re: The Beginning of the End

Zuni slashed at the disappearing bits of the Lizard thing, letting out a growl of frustration with every swing.  The fight had been wholly unsatisfying considering how much Zuni wanted to bury the longsword into the creature over and over again.  She sheathed the sword, spitting at the place where she saw the last bit of the creature disappear.  "Bloody creature. Good riddance."  she snarled.

Her demeanour softened when she saw Selvin kneeling over Chandanars body.  She walked over to her friend and wrapped her arms around him in a tight hug.  "I know." she said softly.

In reply to The Dealer (msg # 128):

When the dragons came out Lucky was already moving away from the spot where the lizard avatar had been.  Lucky was disappointed that nothing remained of him like perhaps some magical items but it was what it was.

Lucky didn't move over to where Selvin and Zuni were because he wanted to address the dragons.  "Yes, we will be going after the queen next.  Will these other dragons you speak of be with her?"

Re: The Beginning of the End

In reply to Lucky Six-Fingers (msg # 131):

Forestkiller shrugs.  "Maybe.  We'll create a diversion.  That is, we're going to start tearing this place apart."

Quicklime has her head cocked, as if listening to something in the distance.

"Sounds like someone has already started doing so.  I can hear lots of fighting.  And the sounds of buildings collapsing.  Sounds like fun.  I'm off."

She and a few of the others start to rush towards the stairwell.

Forestkiller watches them and then shuts his eyes.  He points upwards.  "I can't tell you where the Queen is.  But she's upwards and west of here.  I don't know more than that.

"We'll be enjoying our revenge."
He glances at Selvin and Zuni, then the still body of Chandanar  "Hope you enjoy yours too."

Selvin leaned in to Zuni for a moment. Then he slowly calmed himself down, and gathered his composure. He wiped away the tears and stood up. "I don't wanna leave him here. Not sure where t'take 'im tho."

He picked up Chandanar's body and let out a small sigh. He turned to Zuni and Lucky, his face a mask of stone, with Zac's face looking angry. "Up an' west then?"

"Ah, Selvin, I think you should see to some healing.  You are cut up pretty bad from that blade of the lizardman and also the burns from that ooze before.  If you have a potion or something, I'd drink it and help yourself."  Lucky said as he looked over Selvin.

"We can then head up and to the west!"  Lucky added.

Re: The Beginning of the End

Selvin paused at Lucky's words and looked down at both himself and his symbiote. "Oh." His symbiote made a small noise. "Yeah. Sorry, Zac."

He set Chandanar down and began casting the same spell a couple times and downing a couple potions - all in to the symbiote he was wearing, appearing to heal his friend back to pristine condition. He didn't down any potions himself, and he had...roughly 10 empty vials lying on the floor when he finished.

"Welp. That's all the potions but Zac's back so let's go." He picked the body back up and starting heading out.

OOC: Healed the symbiote back all the 120 hp he'd taken.
