Welcome!

Welcome to the game!

FYI, I picked you all based on a couple factors...the main ones being a posting rate similar to mine, and your rPol experience.  I planned to stretch out the application process a bit longer, but I had so many good responses I couldn't resist.

I plan on doing things a little differently regarding characters.  I want you to pick your characters/party among yourselves.  Hopefully, this will make sure that everyone plays what they want to play and that everyone is happy with the makeup of the party.  If you want to play without a rogue, or want a party of all gnomes...go for it!

For your background story (which doesn't have to be too involved, as you are only a 1st level character), just make sure that your character is in/around the Chicane Guild of Sumberton at the time the adventure starts.  I will post the map of Sumberton and we can assume that your characters have at least a working knowledge of the city.

Good luck!

Re: Welcome!

Howdy all and thanks DM for the game invite :)

I'm very keen to try out a Spirit Shaman from Complete Divine. A very tribal chap who in a party of five is probably a great 5th character, being pretty fair in combat (usually as a melee combatant), great as a secondary healer, strong as a caster and with a reasonable skill suite.

He would be human, so hopefully no one wants to be a party of gnomes! I hope this concept fits in with what other people have been thinking :)

Re: Welcome!

I had three concepts myself. There was a crusader, but I figure that could be tabled to make way for the Barbarian. That still leaves the Halfling rogue from an adventuring family as a solid Plan B. My first choice, though, is a specialist wizard with a very scientific approach to magic, if that makes sense. Was originally thinking diviner, but now I'm wondering if conjurer would better justify the Knowledge (the planes) ranks... Hoping to go Dark Scholar if the game lasts past L7, you see.

Re: Welcome!

I like the scholarly wizard type, Ganurath. I've seen it played in the past, and it's always something that allows for an interesting angle from the player's perspective.

My three concepts were a ranger/scout type, a poor country knight (fighter and/or knight from PH2, probably not paladin), and a dwarf crossbow sniper rogue.

If we'll likely have both a barbarian and a shaman, I wouldn't want to over-forest the party with the scout, and a barbarian precludes the necessity of a front-line fighter, so I guess if Ganurath does decide to play his wizard, I'll go with my dwarf rogue.

I'll go with the wizard, since it looks like none of your options were going to fill a caster niche. Also, to achieve a better understanding of the world through mastery of forces beyond the comprehension of lesser minds.

Re: Welcome!

So as it seems at this early juncture:

Guelph: Spirit Shaman
Crayon: Barbarian
Ganurath: wizard (conjuration)
Strangeheroics: rogue

That would just leave Theridan. Hopefully he has a keen interest in being a healer :)

While we're waiting... Game Master! How do you feel about alternate class features from either Player's Handbook II or Unearthed Arcana? Specifically, I'm looking to have something that substitutes out familiars, so in my case that either would be Immediate Magic (Abrupt Jaunt) or Rapid Summoning.

In reply to Game Master (msg # 16):

Well, I wonder if I'm a late addition, or substitute ;)

Here were my 3 concepts:

Birahu the Black, human wizard, LN He is new to the valley, only arriving in Sumberton a month or so ago. He is looking for adventure and other ways to advance his knowledge and skill, good ways to acquire new spells and magic!.

Andrigal the Green, Human, NG, Druid of the Vaathwood Guardians, He is very protective of the woods, evil needs to be put down and 'civilization' needs to end it's cutting of the Vaathwood!

Enoch of the Light, human, LG, Paladin Enoch is a crusader of the church of ________ fighting the good fight for his god. He has a strong arm and back, great faith and is obedient to his god to a fault. He obeys the church elders above all else in his efforts to stamp out evil in the Valley of the Obelisks, and would willingly sacrifice himself for his god and church.

But a cleric of Pelor would work just fine. Any druthers? druther have a cleric, or druther have something else? :D

If you are keen for a cleric of pelor, that would certainly be the best fit with everyone else's first choice as we are currently missing a healer.

It would also mean that it doesn't REALLY matter what Theridan picks.

P.S. I'm a spirit shaman, so druid would have a lot of overlap with my concept, so I'd prefer no druid, fwiw :)

Re: Welcome!

HEY! and thanks for the acceptance. I didn't think we would get in this fast.
Sorry for my delay, but I have been playing Warhammer 40K and Starwars d20 the last 2 days.

My so far thought out concepts are:
-A Dwarven Fighter, former soldier turned adventurer. He is a fierce friend and enemy, holding friends in great esteem, until they truly don't deserve it. And holds a grudge, till things have been sorted out. He loves singing when on the road and will also multiclass to Bard soon.

-An Elf Ranger, going Paladin for the Forestgod after some ranger levels. He is a defender of the forests and nature, becoming more and more obsessed with eradicating anything and anyone that would exploit, corrupt and destroy nature.
The use of nature, both it resources and animals is ok, but over-hunting, extensive deforestation, digging and destruction of spirits and the like will receive a harsh hand.

I am mostly keen about the Elf, but he requires a bit ok "OK'ing" from the GM, as the rules does not allow for it's existence.

If we still need a healer, I can play one, just give me a day to work out a background that is actually interesting.

They make good secondary healers. They are weak primary healers, though, always being a level of 'cure' behind the 8-ball. I also do not want to be the 'healer', I've done that enough over the last 12 months, someone else can do that for a change. I will be using my spells to enhance my combat (and for utility)

My SS is a melee combatant. Do not rely on him for healing the party (although from level 2 I can assist with it).

Two questions for the DM:

1. You said anything from Unearthed Arcana is fair game. Was that statement strictly regarding variants, or did it extend to content such as traits? I have my eyes on Focused and Polite, you see...

2. I have disposable income! Would you be terribly opposed to a Masterwork Tool of Decipher Script in the form of a linguistics manual, or a scholarly tome on a particular Knowledge field?

Re: Welcome!

1. I'll favor Focused, then.

2. The Knowledge Tool is simple enough: It's a book that covers the field in broad strokes. By referencing the content, a character would have reference that might jog their memory for more specific information. For example, a field guide for Knowledge (local) might have a list of landmarks for each community referenced, and on that list is a location relevant to a rumor my character is trying to remember.

As for Decipher Script... I'll admit, that's trickier. In hindsight, it'd be hard to fit enough data to warrant that bonus in a 1lb book.

I think I could find a way for the Knowledge Tool...perhaps it gives a 1d6-1 bonus to your skill check.

Decipher script tool might have a 25% chance of having what you're looking for in it.

I'd have to think on the cost though.

Re: Welcome!

I've got 4 sheets, so we'll begin.

I will post maps in the new Maps thread.  I think that'll allow me to post larger/easier to read maps.  I will try to keep combat maps in the game thread itself, so you don't have to flip back and forth.

As I said earlier, you all should have at least a decent knowledge of Sumberton.  Some of the places in the key are self explanatory, some are not.  If you're looking for something in particular, I'll let you know where you should head.

Edit:  Changed my mind.  You are all volunteers performing guard duty on a barge belonging to the Chicane Guild.  The barge is coming from a land beyond the borders of the Valley of the Obelisks, and your duty will be done once it arrives safely.  You don't know much of the Valley, much less Sumberton.  Here's what you do know of the Chicane Guild:

The Chicane Guild is the business end of the largest of the three major halfling clans - the Marktunsels. It runs dozens of barges and boats up and down the river between Sumberton and the cities to the south.

I don't think we have anyone who can deal with traps either.

Desra always has a create water ready. It's only 1 gallon at 1st level, so wouldn't hurt to have more of those...

In reply to Mina Black (msg # 83):

"Spellbinder" is just a term I winged from the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Player's Handbook; it's a level title for Illusionists, which Beguilers...want to be, among other things.   :S  Scalesa isn't going to broadcast that she's a Beguiler, she'll just pose as a Rogue with arcane training.

Beguiler's an Enchanter~Illusionist~Sorcerer/Rogue class.  People tend to mistake them (in-universe, at least) for arcanists, arcanists that are also thieves, or bards.  Or whatever else they're posing as.  Scalesa's just a scammer who's decided to try her hand at something a little more lucrative than the Highlander III version of a shell game, or stage magic, or whatever else gets her easy money.

That's fine....I've found rPol things typically slow down on the weekends, in general (for me as well).

One more thing - I'll need the party's marching order as well as the route you want to take.  Whether you're going completely overland, or on the road as far south as you can and then cutting over.  If you ask Vintra she'll, say the road is quicker.

I'd say remain on the road until we are within walking distance of the attack spot.

All the others are pretty neat, just don't hit any party members :)

Alternatively, you could hold your spellfire while the meatheads get in and get dirty. I have been waiting many weeks to taste battle with Guelph. It would be disappointing if he pepped himself up with buffs, etc and charged in to find his only combat is slitting the throats of the entire guard you have taken out with one spell ;)

Please, give generously to your meatheads in this, the week of the mindless, charging warrior :)

As far as spells like charm go, Scalesa is Chaotic Neutral, and well aware of the uses of such a spell (how else is she going to persuade a really angry scam victim to walk away when she rolls a Natty 1 on her Bluff check?).  In the event that any of you, as a player, believe that such a course of action is a stellar idea, despite your character having beliefs to the contrary (your characters seem to possess more empathy than Scalesa, but then again, an alu-fiend or cambion likely has more empathy than her on a good day   :( ), just...dial "S" for some temporary cerebral re-wiring!

I have to say I'm not all in favor of metagaming when it comes to battle strategy ; just let everyone do what they feel their characters would do in any given situation. Which does not mean they can't fight or argue about it after the foes are fallen.

Re: Welcome!

Not at all. War is war. Even Lawful Good gods' followers do it and no quarter has to be given in the name of Good.

If you aren't convinced by that argument, consider your alternatives. You could:

a) bind him and leave him there - where he might either die, or wake up and kill one of us.
b) leave him there unbound - where he might either die, or wake up and kill one of us.
c) wake him up and ask him polite questions about his other friends in the complex before having to figure out what to do with a live prisoner.
d) wake him up and interrogate him (in which case why be squeamish about a coup de grace?)
e) wake him up and let him go (see part 'b')
f) ask him to join the party

So, in answer to your question "how much of a pain should Desra be about killing helpless goblins", personally I've been through that very painful debate in-character so many times I'd be most grateful if you didn't. The argument will centre around the above options, none of which are imho comparable to the justified ease of a coup de grace.

Thanks for asking the question though. It takes about a month to get through the discussion of "coup de grace: Malicious or merciful?" in-game and it can be done in OOC in about two days :)

To confirm the crit, you need to roll another attack.  If that one hits, the critical is confirmed and you deal double damage.  If not, your attack still hits, but just deals normal damage.

Yes, it does!

When you roll, go ahead and roll for damage as well.  That way (especially since you're high in initiative) I can let everyone know the result of your turn...that way they can act accordingly (ie: not attacking an already dead creature).

RoboCop, there, is a maug.  Mercenary construct from the blocks that make up Acheron, a Lawful Evil plane with Lawful Neutral tendencies...probably has some hobgoblin friends back home.

Hey guys,

Sorry for the bad news, but it doesn't look like I'm going to be able to update in the forseeable future.  The permissions on the computers don't give me the tools to edit/update the maps/pictures.

I'll try to update whenever I can when I get to a more functional desktop, but those will be few and far between.

I fully plan on continuing this once I'm done with my "trip," but that will be towards the end of the year.  I hope you guys can hang on until then, and I'll post occasionally to let you know I'm still planning on continuing!

Sorry for the slow pace lately...I want to give everyone a chance to chime in on what to do next.  My plan is to stay as non-intrusive as possible during these "decision points," but I'll try to give the group an idea of the options.  I'd prefer a group discussion where I answer questions as necessary, but I'll also nudge if needed.

I imagine the spellcasters might like to park and recover some spells...but that's a group decision!

Perhaps I'll work on a basic, running narrative of "The Story So Far..."  A thread that updates when big events/tasks happen.  I'll also update the map of the area you're in with the progress (we'll assume someone is a cartographer-in-training).

Does that sound like it would benefit everyone?

Sounds plausible, Desra :-)

So I've created a narrative thread (The Story So Far...) where I'll keep a running summary of the adventure, as well as throw in key items to remember.  I won't announce updates to that thread, it will just move along with the story.

The maps thread is also updated.  I'll bump that thread whenever I update the 'fog of war' map.

Re: Welcome!

Illusions is usually mind-affecting, and since undead lack a mind to begin with, they tend to be immune to those. There are exceptions though!

Wow, ok!  Happy thanksgiving everyone!

Let me take a look at everything and see what I can do.  I recently built a new computer and all my maps and such are on my old laptop.  It shouldn't be too tough :-)

Re: Welcome!

Awesome!

Could we please get a quick summary of what everyone is? It's been a while and I can't really remember.

I had a look and saw that we may have lost Mina, and she was a wizard.

Guelph is a Spirit Shaman. He is primarily a melee combatant, similar to a druid in fighting ability, and gets a couple of Druid spells. Since he is now level 2 he can contribute quite well to healing the group, though he doesn't have enough grunt in that area to be the party's primary healer.

At the moment he is retrieving Shillelagh and Cure Light Wounds each day to cast.

Re: Welcome!

Desra is a cleric of Heironeus, so as much a warrior as a priest. She covers pretty much the same party role as Guelph, but with a flavour that focuses on religion and justice rather than nature and wilderness.
She also has an interesting backstory connected to the fey world, but we haven't had a lot of opportunities to explore that so far.

Re: Welcome!

Scalesa is a Beguiler.  It's a Magic-User/Thief sort of class...

Magic-User: Spontaneous casting of Arcane spells in up to light armour.  She has more Enchantment and Illusion spells, and a few useful Divination and Transmutation spells.  Enchantments are particularly strong.
Thief: Sneaking, finding and disarming traps, opening locks.  Use Magic Device!
Other: She's sort of good at the "talking to others" thing, but shouldn't be relied on for it too often...

Re: Welcome!

When I took over Haajrayn he was a 1st level ranger, but I think a scout/ranger with the Swift Hunter feat works better, so I redid him as a 1st level scout, and he's just taken his 1st level in ranger. So skills and archery based (not melee!).
I sent his 2nd level update through, but his sheet hasn't been updated yet (as I do not have the access to make changes).

Re: Welcome!

No need to immediately rush back, DM, if you need a couple more weeks to settle back down into a routine in RL. Better to do that then come back and run the game when you're able, than feeling guilty every day you don't address the game :)
