Slaughterguarde Laboratory

The tunnel opens into a roughly square chamber shored up by timbers.  Four similar posts hold up the ceiling.  A torch set in a sconce to the east of the doors lights the room.  Two hobgoblins in heavy armor lean on the far wall, guarding burnished copper doors engraved with leering demonic faces.  Unlike the earthen walls in the other parts of the room, the walls that flank the doors are made of gray-green masonry.  A hay bale is set near the eastern wall, arrows sticking out of it.

OOC:  Haajyrayn, Mina and Guelph can act, then I'll reset the order with Desra first and the monsters last.

Guelph wastes no time in taking advantage of their surprise entrance. He drops the torch a little in front of himself then casts a spell.

"Aaah!" Haaj nods as he says so in a low tone.
He turns his head to the others, while moving forward, as quiet as possible, to get a better line-of-sight:
"Hobgoblin guards, so Hobgoblin or bigger brute as leader I guess."

Haaj takes two deep breaths. It almost looks like he is smiling.
inhaling the second time, Haaj raises and draws his bow in one move.
As he exhales, the arrow streaks towards the Hobgoblin.

The arrow hits the Hobgoblin just below the chest armor.
But with no bloodspray and only a grunt from the beast Haaj is unsure how well he hit it. and curses under his breath

Recognizing the bolstering magic, Mina weighs her options. After a fraction of a second, the robed figure wove through her comrades, positioning herself past and behind the shaman. From there, she holds her hands at the ready, waiting for a clear shot.

Move: Southwest space adjacent Guelph.
Standard: Ready action to Acid Splash a hobgoblin that moves to where Mina can get a clear shot.

Re: Slaughterguarde Laboratory

Guelph, Mina and Haajrayn get the jump on the hobgoblins before they can react.  Guelph casts a spell and his club grows much more menacing!  Haajrayn lets an arrow loose which strikes his target, but clangs off of the goblin's half-plate.  Mina waits for the right time and as a hobgoblin exposes itself, she flings a ball of acid which splatters over some of the hobgoblin's [H1] bare skin.

The hobgoblins move towards the party, keeping their defenses up.

With the hobgoblins on the defensive, and concern about throwing her spells needlessly into a melee, Mina flows through the battle, holding her wooden rod defensively as she moves to divide the attention of the enemy combatants.

Standard: Total Defense Action, for AC 18
Move: E E E SE NE, ending immediately east of H2. Assuming the hobgoblins are on total defense, they don't get any attacks of opportunity against Mina. As a bonus, a flanking position is gained.

Re: Slaughterguarde Laboratory

Desra was rather slow to react, but when she does her focus is perfect and she moves with calm and precision, despite the fearsome and genuine force against them.

With a simple prayer, she calls upon Heironeus' power to bring a sacred aura of protection around her companions.

Without further warning, she springs forward and charges into the melee, finds her spot next to Guelph and delivers a single blow, strong and precise, aiming for the hobgoblin's chest.

The priestess keeps her shield high, waiting for the retaliation...

swift action : protection devotion aura (allies get a sacred bonus AC+2)
full-round action : charge H2 - hit AC22 for 7 damage (flanking bonus not included)
 current AC : 16

Re: Slaughterguarde Laboratory

Scalesa takes a step and successfully disables one of the hobgoblins for a moment.  Haajyrayn's arrow bounces off the armor of the same hobgoblin.  Mina moves freely around the defensive monsters.  However, as she moves into position, an arrow flies from the north and embeds itself in her abdomen.  Desra, seeing an open opportunity, charges towards the eastern hobgoblin and bring her longsword to a stop deep in its neck.  The hobgoblin falls to the ground, motionless.  Guelph moves forward and attacks the remaining hobgoblin, but his club swings wide.

The hobgoblin left standing takes a swing at Desra, but its pick misses as well.

Scalesa reaches for her mace as soon as her spell is finished, but when she sees Mina get hit, she instead decides to take out the vile arrow-slinger.  She moves past Haajrayn and makes another set of gestures and intonations, this time waving her hand at the new menace upon completion.

"Oh, give it a rest!"

Despite her young age and apparent naiveté, it became clear that the priestess had been in fights before. The dead monster at her feet did not seem to bother her one bit.

She had parried the pick with her heavy shield, and immediately retaliated but her attack lacked precision and power, and was easily dodged.

Not wanting to hit his own, Haaj quickly moves to the haystack, drawing an arrow and knocking it as he does so.

The arrow hits the Hobgoblin in the left biceps, only the tough skin, of the Hobgoblin, keeps the arrow from cutting a deeper gash in the arm

Scalesa successfully puts the goblin archer to bed and Haajrayn's arrow deals enough damage to drop the last hobgoblin.

Re: Slaughterguarde Laboratory

good thing you removed your shield !

Desra turns around and peruses the room, fearing more hobgoblins would join in the fight. She carefully approaches the closed doors and listens in, wondering whether the sounds of the brief combat may have dragged attention...

When she turned to Guelph and the archer, it was already over.
Something inside of her said that she perhaps should have prevented it. Killing a sleeping opponent was hardly honourable. On the other hand, that goblin had forsaken his life by attacking them with lethal weaponry. But then they were the intruders in this scenario. Yet the greenskins had probably no right to be here in the first place...

Guelph comes back down as quietly as he can. He now has a shortbow slung over his back as well as a half full quiver of arrows. "He has same armour as these. And this," he whispers, tapping the top of the shortbow he has procured.

EDIT: Guelph also picks up his shield! :)

The party finds nothing more interesting in the room.

In the flickering torchlight, the faces engraved on the doors seem to twist and sneer, following your every move.
