Thoughts on Gameplay

This section will contain hopefully-helpful thoughts on gameplay as I am struck by inspiration, the Spirit moves me, etc.

Character-Specific Knowledge

If your character knows something as a result of a knowledge or other skill check, or just because I think your character would know something about whatever-it-is and the other characters wouldn't, I will pass that knowledge on to you in a private communication.

The purpose of this private communication is to allow you to share the information with the rest of the party in whatever organic manner you deem most impressive.  :)  It is NOT so that your character can keep the information to him/herself as if they were a Dragon hording its last gold piece!  I'm sure all of you were already going to do this, but I just wanted to get that out there at the beginning.

Also, if other characters start spouting information that you're pretty sure their players wouldn't inherently know it's a pretty good bet that I'm the source.  Now, I'm not above giving your characters bad or garbled information if that is what they would know, so skepticism is always warranted (:)), but they're probably not just pulling the info out of their nether regions.

There's No "I" in "Team"

This story is a collaborative effort.  You all have backgrounds and histories.  You can make up relationships with people in town or the surrounding countryside, invent prior incidents and/or interactions, or really do whatever as the inspiration strikes you.  The only rule is to try and keep the NPCs within the character they have already established in the story.  If you run afoul of something plot-related I'll let you know and you can edit.

If you have any questions or concerns about what you might be thinking about doing, you can always run it by me in a PM.

A Culture of Affirmation

I think one of the reasons people tend to fall away from these sorts of games is that they can feel disconnected, that's there's no real community, and that they don't have a real reason to post.  I want to change that.  I want us as players (and GMs! :)) to feel like we are friends and that we are appreciated for our skills.

In that vein, I'd like to encourage everyone to encourage each other.  If you read a post and it makes you laugh, or makes you think, or you just think the writing in that particular post was really good, tell the person!  You can either tell them in the OOC thread or in a PM, but definitely tell them.

Now, I'm not saying that you need to feel compelled to give people compliments on every single post.  But we have a high enough quality of player here that I'm thinking there should be something to compliment every so often.  If you get a compliment, then you feel good and are encouraged to keep up high-quality work.  If you don't get a compliment, there's always next time!

Languages

By the by, I have enabled language functionality in this game.  If you mouseover the "insert a private line" menu and move your mouse to "The language group" entry at the end of that menu you should see a list of all the languages your character knows.  You can translate any text you have highlighted into whatever language you click.  It's that easy!  :)

Re: Languages

if you are going to do something like explore a room, examine something specific in a room, or make a skill check regarding something you know, see, hear, or otherwise perceive, please don't hesitate to send me a private message about it.  I'm normally pretty quick about responding and that will give you the info to incorporate into your post.

I think that will make things run a lot quicker and more smoothly than you putting something in a post, waiting for my response, and then having to make another post incorporating what I told you.  So please keep an eye out for opportunities to do that wherever you can.
