Chapter #3a:  Cellar Dweller (Kellan)

Shayliss sighed with obvious relief.  "Thank you so much, Kellan!"  She favored him with a big smile.  "I'll wait for you at that table near the door."  She turned back to the table; speaking after Kellan had made his farewells and headed up to his room.  "I do not want to interrupt you any more than I already have."  She curtsied again.  "It was a pleasure to meet you both."  At that, she headed back to the indicated table to wait for Guardsman Storval to return and escort her back to the Sandpoint General Store.

Re: Chapter #3a:  Cellar Dweller (Kellan)

Kellan smirked and rolled his eyes at Cato's jab about being a hero before rounding the corner and ascending the staircase. Within about ten minutes heavy boot fall could be heard making it's way back down matching the rhythm of jingling chain mail. Kellan had the pole axe resting on one shoulder and gave a nod to the assembled as he reached the bottom.

"Shall we?" He suggested to a Shayliss with a smile, giving another wave to Foxglove and Cato "Have fun gentleman, wish me luck" he added with a hint of humor. Kellan had heard stories of rats the size of dogs making their way in from the country, although he had never seen one and they were said to be rare.  Regardless in Kellan's mind it was a chance to help out a neighbor, the fact that it happened to be a pretty neighbor didn't hurt.

He opened the door for Shayliss and gave a parting smile to the girls at the bar before he followed her out.

Re: Chapter #3a:  Cellar Dweller (Kellan)

Shayliss took Kellan's arm and snuggled into the big guardsman a bit as they walked up Market Street to the southern town square.  With the wind blowing in off the ocean, the evenings were always a little chilly.  From the square it would only be a few yards up Water Street to Main; the Sandpoint General Store was right on that corner.

As they walked, the younger Vinder girl was a font of questions.  "So you fought against the goblins, Kellan?  Was it horrible?  We were hiding inside the cathedral and it seemed horrible.  How many were there?  How many did you kill?  They're saying you killed, like 15 goblins all by yourself!  Did you use THAT poleaxe?"  She stared at Kellan's polearm as if it were some sort of legendary weapon of yore.

Re: Chapter #3a:  Cellar Dweller (Kellan)

Kellan saw nothing wrong with a bit of snuggling, it was cold out after all, and she seemed like a nice girl. Unfortunately "snugly" is not an adjective often used to describe the cold, hard mesh of Chainmail. He laughed softly at her questions, biting back a bit of grief at the memory of young Dacen. Putting it from his mind he cleared his throat against the chill night air.

"We probably killed less than a dozen all told, and while I did my share, I was wounded several times in the process, a dagger here, a arrow here, and a goblin dog nearly took my arm off at the elbow" he pointed to the marred sections that had just seen some basic repair earlier in the day "Liseth Thoradin , Father Zantus's new acolyte used what divine gifts the gods have felt fit to bestow upon her to keep us all in one piece, more or less. The gnome Pisca Freemish is a crack shot with that little bow of hers, and Brodert's new assistant, the dark haired one, that would be Cato Crispin, it turns out he is a student of the arcane and was flinging acid from his finger tips left and right. It was quite a sight"

He was inwardly amused that he was already retelling the tale "Oh, and yes...I used this" he hefted the pole axe a little "Same one Iv'e carried for years...never thought I would ever be spiking mounted goblins with it." He smiled to the girl, giving her a little squeeze

"Now you said that there may be two rats? And about how large do you consider large?" He asked as they neared the general store, stomping off his boots before they went inside.

Re: Chapter #3a:  Cellar Dweller (Kellan)

Shayliss' eyes were round orbs.  "VERY large," she said, as she led Kellan through the darkened store and to the steps of the cellar.  "Maybe goblin-sized?"  She picked up a lantern and lit it as they stood at the head of the staircase.  "Be careful!"  She warned, as Kellan slowly began moving down the staircase to investigate the basement.

The basement was large, and clearly used to hold inventory for the General Store.  Everything seemed very neatly put away; and there was nothing . . . suddenly Kellan spotted a large something at the end of basement.  He moved closer, Shayliss following close behind.  As he approached, he saw that the something he'd seen was actually a cot set up in the back of the room.

Kellan turned at the sound of rustling behind him; his jaw dropped at the same instant that Shayliss Vinder's bodice hit the floor.  Kellan could see that Shayliss was VERY well-endowed, and that those endowments were restrained only by a sorely-put-upon brassiere.

Shayliss moved forward and put her arms around Kellan's neck.  "I may have stretched things a bit," she said playfully, looking up into his eyes.  "There are two very large things down here that need your attention," she looked down at her chest, then up at Kellan, giving him a saucy grin.  "But they aren't rats."

Re: Chapter #3a:  Cellar Dweller (Kellan)

Kellan must have looked comical to the girl during his "brave" storming of the basement. He was combat vetted after after, against goblins admittedly, but none the less he seemed to be taking his mission seriously. When Shayliss replied that the rats were "Goblin sized" it seemed to confirm his suspicions, his imagination conjuring gigantic vermin skulking between the sacks and pallets of the General Store, gorging themselves on the stocks,

Moving cautiously into the center of the room with his pole axe held low he turned at a sound, expecting matted fur and jagged yellow teeth, he was instead confronted with crimson locks falling over soft pale skin. She could practically see his mind struggling to catch up with this development and where his body had been primed for a fight, it was now priming for very different activities.

After the shock started to wear off he smirked, an expression that soon grew into a full fledged smile that betrayed his relief and pleasant surprise. "Alright..." He began, his voice half part chiding, half part conspiratorial "I'll admit, that was pretty smooth" he laughed, moving closer, his eyes wandering in the lamp light.

"Shayliss...you could have just...dropped some hint's you know. I would have been happy to court you, or invite you to that dinner we were having tonight at the Dragon" he explained with a low, soft voice "I must have looked like quite the fool...giant rats" he laughed again

Re: Chapter #3a:  Cellar Dweller (Kellan)

"Oh, you don't need to court me, Kellan," Shayliss said breathily, "and I really don't mind you being a fool for me, either."  The redhead grinned and briefly snuggled up to the guardsman, then stepped back.  "But we need to get you out of this armor!  I think it will be easier for you to use your weapon," her hand slid between his legs, massaging him, "without it, don't you think?"

She had just begun unbuckling Kellan's clasps when both of them heard the door of the General Store slam.  "Shayliss!!"  A rough voice called out.  "Shay!!!  Where ARE you, girl?!?"

Shayliss gave Kellan a wide-eyed look of sheer panic.  "Gods, it's my father!"  She said in a terrified voice.  "I didn't think he'd be home for hours!  He's already so angry about Katrine;  he'll kill me if he finds you here!"  She stared at Kellan with a look of dawning horror.  "He'll kill YOU if he finds you here!"  They could hear the clomp of heavy boots moving across the floor of the General Store.  Shayliss made a flustered grab for her bodice.  "What should we do?"

Re: Chapter #3a:  Cellar Dweller (Kellan)

Kellan's mind was struggling to stay afloat in a sea of hormones, Shayliss was a remarkably pretty girl, not exactly wholesome it seemed but her wildness was infectious. In his mind he could practically hear Amele Barett chiding him for sneaking off to basements in the dead of night with girls alone, she would in turn of course recommend some other respectable candidate. He could also see the entire Sandpoint Garrison winking and nudging when it was found out that he had been spending time with Shayliss Vinder. Of course they would find out he thought, given her propensity for gossip.

As a Shayliss began to unclasp his armor and to massage him Kellan found it understandably difficult to concentrate, that was before the sound of her Father's voice sent him back to reality with all the effectiveness of a bucket of ice water dumped over his head. "Ven?!" He suddenly knew a different sort of fear, the kind that every boy harbors in the back of his mind for these sorts of special occasions.

When asked what they should do, Kellan knew the answer at once "Get dressed!" He urged her softly yet urgently as he swiftly re-clasped his armor. He was confident that whatever would ensue would be less violent without so much exposed flesh.

Re: Chapter #3a:  Cellar Dweller (Kellan)

Shayliss gave Kellan a quick nod and began putting her bodice back on as quickly as she could.  At that moment the door at the top of the staircase opened.  "Shay?"  Said a deep voice.  "You down here, girl?"  Heavy footsteps trod down the stairs and the broad, muscled figure of Ven Vinder appeared.  "Your slut of a sister is off with . . ."

Ven Vinder stopped as he took in the situation.  Kellan standing there.  A cot set up in the back of the storeroom.  Shayliss' mussed hair and unlaced bodice.  The big man's eyes grew cold and his face colored red, but his voice got very, very calm.

It was the kind of calm one might experience in the eye of a hurricane.

"What."  The big man carefully enunciated each word.  "Is. Going. On. Here?"

Shayliss shot Kellan a mute and terrified look.  Apparently it was up to him to stave off her father's anger.  Or they would both suffer its consequences.

Re: Chapter #3a:  Cellar Dweller (Kellan)

Kellan steadied himself, he had intervened in domestic squabbles before on behalf of the guard, this was not an altogether different circumstance. He had been brought up under the impression that hard work, honest speech and and a clear conscience were the way to go about life, and when pressed, he fell back on those life lessons hard earned at the end of a switch he had picked out himself.

"Mr. Vinder" he nodded respectfully "I realize what this might look like, but I ask that you hear me out." He mustered all the maturity of tone he could for his age, speaking from the heart "I was eating over at the Rusty Dragon when Shayliss here came in and asked me to help her clear out some rats here in the cellar, knowing the nature of rats in these parts I changed out of my nicest dinner clothes and into my armor, then escorted her here so that she could do inventory in peace. Plenty of folks were there at the Dragon, and you can ask any of them yourself"

He cleared his throat and continued "Now it seems that Shayliss may have exaggerated about these rats so that we could speak alone, and truth me told we were just talking about courting, nothing's been done, Erastil's my witness."

He nodded a little to emphasize his point "Now this is your home, and you say the word I'm as good as gone, not a word to anybody, but I believe your daughter may have feelings for me, and I would be inclined to stop by at a more decent hour to call on her with your blessing if you would give it"

"If not" he paused  "I'll be on my way"

He suddenly realized that he had been holding his breath, releasing it in a long smooth exhalation.

Re: Chapter #3a:  Cellar Dweller (Kellan)

Ven Vinder was a big man.  A VERY big man.  He had been in more than his share of barroom brawls and tavern tussles over the years.  And he was incredibly angry about Katrine sleeping with that no-good lumberman.  He felt like pummeling someone, and the young guardsman in his storage room standing next to his half-dressed younger daughter seemed like an excellent candidate.

Ven smiled.  He knew he could beat the young man into the ground pretty easily.  Probably with one hand tied behind his back.

But.  Ven took a deep breath, then exhaled.  This was Kellan Storval.  The Ogre Stomp! champion.  He came from a respectable family.  He was moving up through the guard's ranks.  And he seemed very respectful.  He looked at Shay, then back at the guardsman.  If the young man was serious about courting . . .

Ven cracked his knuckles as he stepped close to Kellan and looked down into his eyes.

He must have outweighed Kellan by at least one-hundred pounds.

"Is that how it is then?"  He glanced over at his daughter, who have him a weak "yes Daddy."  He looked back at Kellan.  "All right, then, Storval.  You have my permission to court my daughter.  You may call on her as long as you keep me informed of when you will arrive, how long you will be out, and where you two will be going."  His voice was like two bars of rough iron grating together.  "Are.  We.  Understood?"

Re: Chapter #3a:  Cellar Dweller (Kellan)

Kellan had never really appreciated how large Ven Vinder was until that night. The lantern light had a way of casting dramatic shadows over every muscle and expression as the man seemed to consider Kellan's story. When he appeared to be giving the pair a chance to redeem themselves, Kellan could scarcely believe it,

He listened as each of Ven's demands were laid out, then gave a glance to Shayliss as if to make sure that's she was following along as well.

"Yes sir, perfectly" he assured the hulking shop owner "I...should probably let you two talk" looking between them "I am hunting boar tomorrow morning, but perhaps I could stop by the shop later in the day?" His questioning eyes moving from Shayliss back to Ven "If that's alright with you of course"

Kellan felt caught between aggravating the situation and assuring Ven that he was not speaking idly, his feelings about Shayliss were still a little confusing but he had every intention of giving her the benefit of the doubt.

Ven nodded at Kellan.  “Good.  I’ll look for you then.”  He frowned.  “Now get out of here.”

Kellan did not need any more of an invitation to quickly move up the staircase and out of the storage basement.  As he did, he heard the gigantic store proprietor start to speak with his sheet-white daughter.

“So.  Shay."  There was an ominous silence and a small squeak.  "Tell me about this cot . . .”

Kellan was leaving the General Store just as Alergast Barrett was coming up the porch.  The older guardsman almost stumbled in surprise, then grinned at his protégé.  “So, rat-catching completed?  I’ll just assume that they will carry “tails” of terror back to the warrens from whence they came.”  He made a summoning gesture.  “Come on, we need to get over . . .”  He stopped short as he saw Kellan’s expression.  “Good gods, man, are you okay?  You look like you’ve just run three miles being chased by a ghost!”

Re: Chapter #3a:  Cellar Dweller (Kellan)

Kellan neary ran straight into Alergast as he exited, then did a double take.

"Alergast? Oh, uh, yep...all done." He did not seem to pick up in the joke at first, but then grinned a little nervously as it clicked in his mind. "Ah, tails...hah ha" he shook his head a little. "I'll be fine,  I think all that rich food Foxglove served us hit me a little hard" he tried with another deep breath to steady himself.

"So you said we were needed someplace? What's going on?" He asked as he leaned on his pole arm, cocking his head a little. Alergast should have been home with the family, making Kellan a little more on edge.

Re: Chapter #3a:  Cellar Dweller (Kellan)

"Hmmm.  Well, that's good to hear," Alergast said, giving Kellan a sidelong look indicating he thought there was more to the story and that he would have it out of the younger guardsman eventually.  "Yes, we're needed up at the Boneyard.  Apparently Father Zantus discovered something there this evening and wanted the Sandpoint Guard's finest to investigate."  He waited a few beats as he struck a confused pose.  "Which begs the question of why he asked for you."

The timing was perfect, and Alergast grinned widely at Kellan's reaction to his jibe.  "Come on, Champion, we need to get up there before your friends trample all over the evidence."  Without much more in the way of conversation, they jogged their way to the northern town square, arriving almost exactly as the same time as the larger party coming directly from the Rusty Dragon.

OOC:  Kellan, if you want to post a reaction here that is great, otherwise you're back in the main thread with everyone else.
