Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

Kellan shook his head a little "No, no I've never really left the Sandpoint area to tell the truth...Magnimar sounds big, I'm not even sure I can really imagine a thing that big...maybe some day I'll have a reason to hear out that way...and the money" he managed a tired grin. "Maybe buy Shallots a nice dress from there or something..."

He paused at Cato's suggestion, admitting that he had a point "Yeah...we've come this far, no reason to leave the job half finished" he set his pole axe against the wall and pulled the crossbow at his hip off the brass ring it was attached to.

"Are you guys alright with me taking a shot at whatever's down there?" He asked Kerr and Liseth mostly, but loudly enough for Pisca to hear the question

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

Kerr put a protective arm about Liseth's torso as the stood in the corridor just outside the room, watching Pisca check out the southern passageway while Cato and Kellan discussed what should be done with whatever creatures resided below the wooden lids dotting the room's floor.  "I don't know what those flaming letters mean either," he said, not without some consternation.  "And how come they appear to Cato, and not me?  How come only certain people can hear the howling?  I was standing right in the room too!"

At that point, Kerr had a bad premonition about what might be waiting for them under the room's mysterious lids.  He quested out with his newfound ability to sense the presence of evil, and nearly recoiled at what he felt.  "Be careful, Kellan!"  The young acolyte warned.  "There are multiple sources of evil in this room; it seems to be coming from everywhere!  I don't think whatever is under those lids is very friend . . . ."

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

From deep in the shadows dancing in the northwest corner of the room, a misshapen, deformed, three-armed goblin, wearing a tattered brown tunic fastened by a tooth-covered belt and shod with worn leather boots, emerged from behind what looked like a stone-colored sheet specifically designed to match the color of the wall.  In one hand the goblin wielded a longsword glowing red with what seemed like the fires of hell.  In the second he held a fine-looking handaxe covered with what appeared to be carved runes.  In his final hand the goblin grasped a dagger whose hilt was adorned by a stylized, elongated skull.

The goblin's red eyes gleamed with the frenzy of fanaticism.  "DIE!!  DIE, INTRUDERS!!"  He screamed, before rearing his head back and bringing it forward in a jerking motion.  As he did so, an amazing volume of foul-smelling, acidic blood spewed forth from his mouth directly towards the crossbow-wielding Kellan.  Fortunately, the guardsman managed to, with an impressive feat of agility, twist out of the way of the goblin's forceful regurgitation without getting too much of the awful expectoration on him.

Unfortunately, this left Pisca directly in the line of fire, and the gnome, who was busily checking out the southern passageway, simply did not have time to perform a similar feat of acrobatics.  It hit her directly in the torso as she turned toward the mutant goblin, the acid scarring her armor and burning the uncovered portions of her neck and arms.

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

Cato barely had time to fully process what had just happened before his body began to react, purely on instinct.  Later, he would remember his arm coming up in the familiar gesture and flinging his last Acid Dart at the monstrous goblin.  At the time, all he could think was: I sure hope this monster isn't immune to acid, if it vomits it up.  I remember reading somewhere that snakes are sometimes immune to their own venom.  Or was that spiders?  No, because some spiders kill their mates...

OOC:
Standard Action: Acid Dart at 3-arm.

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

Just as Kellan loaded his crossbow, after putting away his polearm, Liseth started at Kerr's mention of all of the evil throughout the room.  She was grateful that he was there with his arm around her, but then Kerr couldn't even finish what he was saying when there was a horrible goblin-shriek and then a stream of something shot past her field of vision and got all over Kellan and Pisca.

"What!?"  Her hands shot to her mouth and Liseth nearly fell backwards into Kerr.  She edged up to the corner of the passage and peeked towards where the spit must have originated, gasping terribly at the frenzied, three-armed goblin wielding all sorts of terrible weapons.  "Where did he come from!?  Look out!"

Liseth was just about out of energy, she had been hoping that they could get lucky just once and there wouldn't be any more terrible monsters here.  But this mutated goblin looked even worse than the quasit demon; especially with that glowing demon sword!  She still had Mr Voon's wand though, and might just be required to use it soon.

"Be careful Kerr.  Let the gods guide you."  She whispered to Kerr, grasping his free hand before he could move by her and into yet another battle.  Then Liseth retrieved her ivory wand, clutching it tightly in her right hand to await the inevitable injuries sure to follow quickly behind the mutant goblin's assault.

She really...REALLY hoped that those pits didn't hide reinforcements already getting ready to jump out of them.

Standard: Cast Guidance on Kerr (+1 to an attack, save, or skill check)

Kellan was practically mid sentance when his eyes went huge at the sight of the surprise goblin. By reflex alone he threw hinself to the side and felt the instant, itching, burning sensation seep into his arm where the stray droplets had fallen, little wisps of acrid smoke wafting up from between the links of his chain mail.

As he glanced around at the pits that surrounded himself, his stomach worked itself into a clenched knot. This was not what Alergast would have called a "tactically sound position"

Nauseating!

Goblin loogies!!!

Vile, disgusting ... and ... what's that steam?  And what's that burning feeling?  Oh!  Desna's grace, that's so ...

Pisca could feel the pulling at the base of her tongue, the chokey feeling, that threatened to pull your esophagus inside out.

"OH MY STARS, YOU ARE DISGUSTING!!!"

In a flash the nausea was gone, banished by a sudden cresting wave of outrage and indignation.  "Spit on me, you filthy, lizard bumping ... "  There was a fire in the gnome's violet eyes, closed as they were to snarling angry slits.  The petite strawberry blond gnome ripped off a string of creative invective that would have blistered the goblin had it been any nearer.  With a quick angry jerk, Pisca whipped out the magic dagger captured from Quasit Girl and threw it straight as an arrow.

"Take that," Pisca said with a feral grin as she saw the magic dagger buried to the hilt in the arm of the mutant goblin.

Standing back in the passageway behind Liseth, Kerr couldn't really tell what had happened other than that some sort of enemy had appeared, and that said enemy had a truly impressive regurgitation range.  Immediately concerned for Liseth, the young acolyte stepped in front of her and out into the room, looking quickly to his right to ensure Pisca and Kellan were okay, then to his left to find a three-armed mutant goblin screaming with all the frothy-mouthed frenzy of an insane cultist.  He flinched involuntarily, but it looked like the goblin wasn't spitting any more acid.

At least for now.

Kerr had rarely enjoyed such an open shot in the close confines of claustrophobic catabcombs.  He nocked the arrow he already had to hand and sent it flying towards the capering creature.  He smiled grimly as it buried itself in the goblin's shoulder alongside Pisca's small dagger, morphing its defiant yell into a pained shriek.

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

Koruvus was infuriated.  Who WERE these people, to come in and disturb Mistress Elyrium's flock with their tromping and their talking?

Of course, Koruvus knew that he had been the very same way.  A treasure hunter and a glory seeker, with dreams of taking the chieftanship of the Seven Tooth Tribe, he had ventured into this underground lair to prove his worth.

And he had, just not in the way he had intended.  Once he drank from the waters in Mistress Elyrium's temple, it became clear to him, so clear to him, that his destiny was to serve her.  At her side, as she extended her kingdom into the township above.  Oh, and she needed Koruvus.  She greedily extracted from him everything he knew about the outside world, even things he didn't KNOW he knew.

She was that good.

And she would be furious if she found that Koruvus had allowed these interlopers to disturb her flock or make off with any of her treasures.  He screamed his defiance at the tree intruders, using the acid breath his mistress had given him to burn two of them.  A fourth invader appeared at the corridor entrance and had the nerve to shoot him, HIM, Koruvus, chosen of Mistress Elyrium, in the shoulder!  Almost simultaneously, the gnome scored his arm with her dagger.  Koruvus screeched in pain; he knew he needed to do something, and fast, or he would join Mistress Elyrium's flock in death.

He quickly shoved the lid on the closest pit open with his foot.  With a low moan its occupant, a walking corpse wearing only a few soiled rags, with flesh rotting off its bones, climbed jerkily out of the shallow pit next to the bowman, who looked on in unabashed shock.  The undead minion clasped its hands together and brought them both around, crashing them into the head of the young warrior and causing him to stumble back.

Koruvus took the opportunity to leap forward and slash the young man's leg with his longsword, eliciting an agonized yelp.  The goblin grinned as the human's blood flowed freely.  It looked like the archer wouldn't be long for this world; once he was finished, Koruvus and his congregation could move on to the others.

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

"So that's what's under the lids," the gnome muttered a somewhat bemused mutter to herself.  "Not at all what I'd expected."

"Ee poh nee woe."  The gnome spat a goblin invective that insinuated its target had an affinity for reading.  Then Pisca the Mutant Goblin Hunter of the Cinderland wastes, pierced her foe for the second time, this time sinking an arrow deep into its highly irradiated flesh.

[Language unknown: "Llietaen, omelfi isevnt ourrutrutcon tial t ilnot ntmeck,"] Pisca demanded in the goblin language.  She raced out between the pits to cut off the Mutant Goblin's path to any more of the lids.  Her slim steel blade rang from its sheath, a percussive accent to her voice.

"Try to take it alive," she called to the others.  "It might be able to answer questions."

Then ... it was suddenly Pisca verses the Millennial Zombie.  It must have been thousands of years old.  And it had nearly killed Kerr Mollin.

"Cato!" she called out to the wizard.  "Lets put down this zombie.  Between us we should be able to handle it."

And so, it was with a look of surprise when the gnome saw the magic dagger tear itself from the flesh of the Mutant Goblin and fly back to where she had just been standing.  Pisca's eyes flicked from the Millennial Zombie, the Mutant Goblin and the magic dagger now lying useless on the floor, and, in reaction, she said, " ... hey ... "

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

"Kerr!"  A zombie smashed Kerr!  An undead zombie, from the pit in the ground!  Not to mention the evil glowing sword that was wielded by the mutant freak goblin.  Kerr was surrounded!

Before she knew it, Liseth was touching her healing wand to Kerr; praying to every god that it worked like Mr Voon said it would.  The familiar, divine glow that Liseth herself channeled started in the wand, then discharged into Kerr.  The blonde acolyte's face fell when she saw that the healing wand only barely managed to help Kerr at all.  He was in trouble.

"They're surrounding you!"  Liseth screamed the obvious as she tried to tug Kerr back into the passageway with her.  "Use your sword, make it into a shield.  Don't let them get you!"

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

Kellan watched as the room erupted into chaos, the sounds ofn sudden combat being joined and the frantic shadows and movement pressing in on his senses like an icy wave. He dropped the crossbow with a clatter, the thing bouncing a little as he ran past, snatching up his pole axe and scooting past Cato on his way to back Kerr up

Pisca was screaming about taking it alive...the gnome was fearless, he had to give her that, but the guardsman was more concerned about keeping those three wicked looking weapons from being brought to bear on Kerr.

He swung the poleaxe in a wide arc, attemping to sweep its feet out from under the goblin

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

Whatever Kerr had expected after stepping out of the tunnel and into the room, it hadn't been a three-armed mutant goblin wielding a magic sword and bringing his undead friends out to play.  The young bowman had hoped his shots would finish off the screaming fanatic, but they just seemed to make him angry.

Angry enough to open one of the pits and let out a zombie.

Angry enough to attack Kerr with the glowing magic sword.

The ferocity and unexpectedness of the two-pronged attack knocked Kerr off balance.  He hadn't been ready for the zombie barreling out of the pit, but that's exactly what happened.

Kerr had thought zombies were a little slower than that, but this one must have been really hungry.

They young man had nothing to block the zombie's two-fisted attack with other than his bow, and that was a paltry defense against the undead creature's blow.  The zombie's clenched fists slammed into Kerr's head, setting his ears ringing.

As if that weren't bad enough, the zombie's relentless battering distracted Kerr from the goblin, who moved in to follow up the zombie's attack with one of his own.  The goblin's magic sword found an opening in Kerr's armor, slashing a cut deep into his leg.  In response, Kerr let out what he hoped was a tenacious growl of toughness and feared was a high-pitched keen of pain.

But just when things looked their worst, he felt Liseth's healing magic flow into him, fortifying and sustaining him against the evil he faced.  Kerr knew what he had to do.  He had to protect Liseth from these monsters.

Kerr stumbled backwards into the tunnel after the blonde acolyte, drawing arrow after arrow and sending them flying towards the recently-freed zombie.  The first arrow buried itself in the zombie's shoulder, knocking it back slightly.  The second went right through its eye, ripping the corpse from its ugly unlife.

Kerr moved to draw another arrow as his leg throbbed.  He fully expected the sword-wielding goblin to charge around the corridor's corner at any moment.

And he would be ready.

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

Koruvus screamed in frustration as his first congregant crumpled to the ground from the archer's well-placed missile fire.  Elyrium was going to be SO angry!  But at this point it seemed more important to successfully deal with these intruders than to preserve his mistress' minions in their pits.

So Koruvus made an executive decision.  Bring as many out as he could.  He hoped Elyrium wouldn't mind.

And if what the gnome said was true, a tiny voice in his brain whispered, then you won't have to answer to her at all!  YOU'LL be the ruler!  Of the congregation, and the pools, and the entire realm!  Koruvus almost cackled to himself.  It would be a dream come true.

If only he survived this battle.

The dark-haired archer had disappeared back into the passageway, but Koruvus still faced more than enough opponents to keep him occupied.  He ducked between the polearm-wielding warrior and the rapier-brandishing gnome, kicking aside two more of the fragile pit-lids to free their captive congregants.  As he did so, he ventured a sword slash at the gnome, more to keep her off balance for the coming zombie attack than to do any real damage.

Unfortunately the zombie that attacked the gnome seemed unfamiliar with fighting someone that small; it seemed slightly confused and the small woman easily dodged its attack.  Koruvus glanced over his shoulder and grinned as he saw the other zombie lunge out of its cage to knock the staff-wielding human up against the wall.  That looked like it had hurt!

Koruvus could feel his own rent flesh knitting together via the divine power he had been granted by the holy waters of Elyrium's fountain.  His confidence renewed, he vowed to himself that he would see these intruders dead.

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

"Great Kerr!"  Liseth peered past him when Kerr launched his arrows.  Even the undead zombie couldn't withstand those powerful shots, and Liseth never even thought that zombies could really be hurt by arrows.  She was impressed, but Kerr was still really hurt.

"You have to stop that evil goblin before he lets out more zombies!"  The girl saw that the goblin had stepped right to where the zombie was that Kerr just destroyed.  As she shouted, Liseth concentrated on the healing wand once more, getting it to summon up the healing light.  She touched Kerr again, frowning once more when the healing energy still had little effect.

Kerr was still bleeding, and she had used the wand twice!  Liseth just hoped that the others were faring better, but she couldn't even see them from the passage!  She needed to get into the larger room...as soon as that goblin wasn't menacing her from right at the mouth of the passage.

Standard: Activate wand to heal Kerr; 3 Hit Points

Wah!  Zombies and zombies!

Behind wide and frantic eyes, the gnome performed a count of the wooden lids that scattered the room and mentally berated herself for not having done that the very first thing when they were all safely back in the stairway and only one zombie could come at them at a time.  Next time, Pisca, before you sneak into a room with lids all over the floor ...  Next time, you hear zombie moans coming from under the lids ...  Next time, poke one open first.  Next time, *before* you go in ...

Next time.

"Forget what I said!" cried the frantic gnome.  She backed to the wall, and her rapier fell to the floor as she fired an arrow that glanced off the armor of the mutant goblin.  "Kill it!  Em Gee is not talking.  Maybe it's mute.  I don't know.  But it's not talking."

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

Kerr felt another healing surge from Liseth, but somehow, even without looking at her, he could tell that the young blonde was exhausted.  And the mad, mutant goblin was capering about, bringing even MORE foes into the fray.  That had to stop; the group could easily be overwhelmed if the three-armed threat released all the pit-zombies into the fight.

As the young acolyte drew his arrow and nocked it, he prayed to Desna, and Iomedae, and Erastil.  Divines, please bless these shots, he thought to himself as he breathed, willing himself to calm.  Give me the strength to protect this group, to further you will, and to keep your chosen from harm.

He released the arrow.

It sped across the few feet that separated the young man from the goblin, taking the creature right through the head as it focused its gaze on other pit-lids from which it might summon more undead allies.  The goblin, taken by surprise, could only issue a quick intake of breath before he was dead, falling lifelessly into the pit that had so recently contained another of his mistress' unliving minions.

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

The two freed zombies seemed completely unaffected by the sudden defeat of their putative leader; they mindlessly pressed their attack, intent only on the destruction of the living beings before them.  The zombie in the corner took advantage of Kellan's split concentration to nearly level the guardsman with a mighty blow that the young man just was not quick or strong enough to block.  The zombie's clasped hands came thundering down on Kellan's clavicle, nearly dislocating his shoulder and almost driving him to his knees.

The pain was intense.  But perhaps not as intense as the zombie's lack of reaction to its telling blow.  There was no exultation or look of accomplishment in its eyes.  No recognition that it had even landed what would count as a victorious blow in the dueling arena.  Just a vacant-eyed look of hunger.  Only a brief, low moan from the back of the creature's throat warned Kellan of its next attack . . .

. . . Meanwhile . . .

The zombie in the middle of the room had a choice.  It could either move north to engage the gnome, or south to engage the wizard and the warrior.  It moved south, but whether that was because of the multiplicity of targets, the noise, Cato's burning acid splash, or the shining glint of Pisca's dancing lights off Kellan's armor none could tell.  The zombie stepped forward, bringing its hands around and forcefully swinging them into Cato's magical armor with the full weight of its undead body.  Again, the former Hellknight was rocked.  The force of the blow slammed the scholar against the stone wall, hitting his head hard enough that he briefly saw stars.

Again the zombie did not pause to exult in its success.  It just continued to press its attack, teeth bared as it focused on the wizard's exposed, edible flesh . . .

"Yeah!"  The gnome threw her fist into the air as the Mutant Goblin fell to Kerr Mollin's arrow.  Pisca herself drew another shaft and sunk it into a zombie's back, driving it nearly to the fletching in the putrefying flesh.

"Yeah!"  Pisca exulted once again.  Until she noticed ...

"Hey.  That didn't seem to work as well as yours did, Kerr."  The gnome favored her bow with a dubious look.  She gave it a shake as though some small internal mechanism might have broken loose, and that, by shaking it, she might in some way be able to hear it rattling around inside.

Then, "It's not broken."  Pisca pointed an accusing finger at the zombie, as though this may, in some way have been its fault.  "It's not."  She leapt forward and scooped up the longsword of the mutant goblin.  Fire burned up and down the blade.  The gnome pointed again, this time with the fiery blade.  And she said, "It's not broken.  It's just resting."

Cato took a few seconds to regain his bearings after being hit by the second zombie.  He definitely wasn't used to combat experiences like this.

Again, he stumbled back, trying to put distance between himself and the zombie.  He wasn't able to get far enough away before the zombie would have time to attack, but maybe soon he could.  Cato winced at his aching head.  Assuming he was still on his feet.  The scholar decided to play it safe.  He used his quarterstaff defensively as he moved back, trying to predict the the zombie's attacks and fend it off.

Kellan gasped in pain as the clammy, unyielding hands rained down upon him like hammer blows. His armor seemed to do little to deaden the impact and he felt himself suddenly unsteady on his feet. Backing up a few paces with one gloved hand covering his collarbone he turned and glared at the unfeeling thing, separating his feet as the shaft of the pole axe bent slightly in his grip.

Stepping forward he struck back hard, the spear point driving into the sternum and impact in with a dull metallic sound into the wall behind it. He twisted the weapon once in his grip before ripping it out sideways, his face flushed with pain and anger.

Liseth let out a sigh once Kerr struck down the evil, three-armed goblin.  But based on the sounds of things, the fight with the zombies was taking a toll on her friends.  Liseth had one more divine burst left in her, but then she would be completely finished; she just prayed that it would be enough.

"Were almost done...almost."  She softly reminded herself when moving past Kerr to get into the zombie room.  After Kellan struck down one of the zombies, that left just one more.  Liseth hoped.

[Language unknown: "Miunmo Nimaai!  Thilarany t ei cececare m cebeacte neitbe ainillenc noaiom hiolie!"]  Liseth summoned up her power one last time and released a bright white burst to envelop the room, mending the injuries of the living.

Move: CC-4
Standard: Channel Energy to Heal 7 points to everyone; Exclude Goblin but *not* zombies (I don't think it will heal them!)

23:50, Today: Liseth Thoradin rolled 7 using 2d6+1. Channeled Healing.
