Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

Holding his wand ready, Cato takes another step forward.  "We should mention to Nisk that his befuddlers apparently have the side effect of making their targets able to dodge everything."  Putting this to the test, Cato held out the wand and tried to prod the mysterious wizard again, only to fumble once again.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

"Tig . . .," the group's anonymous opponent stopped in mid-sentence, coming to its senses just in time to counter the next round of attacks.  The cloaked person's agility made Cato's awkward wand attack look even clumsier than it actually was--the scholar didn't even get close to touching its garments, much less inflicting damage.  Kellan--using the distraction of Cato's attack to his advantage--nearly took the figure's feet out from under it, but at the last second it managed to hop over the guardsman's weapon, coming down in a crouch with one hand on the floor, bulbous eye trained directly on the young warrior.  Whatever mental disability Nisk's Befuddler had inflicted on the person was clearly at an end.

But the figure had forgotten about Kerr, who had finally locked in on his dagger-wielding tormentor, at least for one shot.  The acolyte had stepped back, both to guard the exit stairs and to gain some room for his archery.  An arrow went ripping through the figure's cloak, drawing a pained grunt.  Exactly how much damage the paladin's shot had done was hard to tell, but his target was clearly hurt.

The eerie mask swung quickly towards Kerr, then back to Kellan and Cato in quick succession.  "You will suffer for what you have done," the raspy, eerie voice promised.  Then it muttered something under its breath . . .

. . . and it was gone.  Utterly vanished, as if it had never existed in the first place.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

"Wait!" called the gnome from down the short hall as Enelle, as she'd come to know the mysterious figure, vanished into thin air.  Still wary, with defenses up, she returned to the Entry Room and blocked the doorway back to the Prison with her presence.

"Just because we can't see him doesn't mean she's not here," Pisca said, with a deliberately fair and equal use of pronouns.  "I too can cloud men's minds so that they cannot see me.  And women's minds too.  But, the thing about this trick is that even though no one can see you, you are still there.  You breath.  You make noise.  You leave footprints.  You have a presence."

She strained her eyes to pick out the clues that would reveal an invisible Enelle, but could find none.

"I can't see her.  But that doesn't mean he's not here.  Stay wary.  Keep the doors blocked.  Can anybody else see, hear or feel anything?"

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

"Oh oh..."  Even having them surrounded, they couldn't seem to pin down this cloaked enemy.  Liseth couldn't help but notice that no one was paying attention to her as well; she thought that her plan to flank the masked man was a good one.  She just hoped that what everyone else had in mind would end up working...

And then the mysterious masked mage was gone.  He vanished!

"Do you think they're invisible?"  Liseth responded to Pisca.  "Like the quasit demon was?"  Looking ahead, Liseth imagined that they could be anywhere.  Even standing right in front of her, knife at the ready...

She suddenly felt incredibly vulnerable and uncomfortable.

"Sarenrae, grant me the sight to see the effect of evil magic."  It was a simple prayer, but one that Liseth had never used much before.  Maybe if she could see magical auras, she could tell if the mystery mage was still in the room with them.

"Who are you?"  Liseth called out to the vanished villain.  "You keep saying that we don't know what is going on.  That we know nothing!  What is it that we don't know?  What is happening here?  Why do you need to attack Sandpoint?  Is Nualia only a part of something even bigger?  Even worse?  Please, why don't you tell us?!"

"Damn your eyes" Kellan spat as the thing disappeared, looking this way and that as he brandished his polearm. "Did anybody see where it went?"

He held his ground for now, sweeping slowly with the blade of the weapon and looking to the others to help root out whatever evil was at work here.

Cato watched the befuddled stranger carefully, staying out of reach of the vicious knife while trying to simultaneously attack with his hand, which was no easy feat.  But it meant he was perfectly positioned to see the subtle hand gestures that accompanied the figure's disappearance.  "Liseth's right.  They've gone invisible.  It's a weak spell, and shouldn't last for more than a few rounds.  Everyone keep an ear out.  Kerr, try detecting evil like with the Quasit."

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

Kerr grimaced in frustration.  The cloaked figure shouldn't be this difficult to take down, should it?  He felt like he was personally failing his friends due to his inability to hit with more than one arrow.  Taking a deep breath, he nocked another and drew it back, vowing that this shot would fly true, when suddenly his target was gone!  The young acolyte looked around somewhat wildly--he was far from used to being in the presence of such fantastic occurrences.  What had just happened?

Kerr nodded to himself as his friends talked.  It made sense that the person had gone invisible.  He had heard of people who had that ability, and had even seen it himself--if at a less dramatic level--during traveling magic shows and such.  He scanned the room for any sign of where the figure might have gone, reaching out again with his senses.

There it was.  The strong sense of evil.  He couldn't pinpoint a location, but he knew the cloaked figure was still in the area.

"It's still here!" He called authoritatively from his post at the doorway leading upstairs.  "Somewhere."  This with less authority.  If he concentrated just a little bit longer, he felt like he would be able to pinpoint its location . . .

Suddenly a voice spoke right in front of Pisca.  "You'll never know," it said with all the raspy creepiness they had come to expect from their quarry.  Pisca heard a grunt overhead, then light footsteps moving down the corridor behind her.  As she spun around, she saw a slight shimmering in front of the door at the end of the hallway before it was flung open . . .

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

"He's still here, I can feel the active magic..."  Liseth's magical investigation proved moot a moment later, when her question received an answer.

She reacted instinctively, with hardly any planning actually going through her head.  The girl just knew one thing; he had unintentionally revealed himself!  Not that it was what she originally had planned, but it worked just the same.

The acolyte rushed forward into the center of main chamber and turned to where she had heard the voice.  Sure enough, there was the door leading back towards Lamashtu's chapel, opening up seemingly on its own.  He had to be there!

"Sarenrae, send a downpour to drench this minion of Lamashtu!"  Liseth called out, summoning one of the most simple of orisons.  The girl had been able to create water out of the air since she could talk.

And the water manifested from the air, just as it always had.  Directly in front of the door while it opened to show everyone the location of their invisible opponent.  "There he is!  We have to stop him!"

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

"Stop him!" said the gnome.  "She's trying to get back to the Chapel."

"Oh, and by the way," she whispered to her friends through her magic web of secret speech, "I jammed the door to from the prison to the chapel.  There'll be no escape there."

Pisca turned and scanned the space just inside of the far doorway, now drenched in the water that Liseth had conjured.  That, of course, would have to be where Enelle stood now after having just opened the door.  There were, however, some things that the gnome knew that neither Enelle nor any of the others knew about getting to the Chapel from here.

And speaking of knowing, there were, perhaps, some other ways to find thing things out even without having yet captured or killed this mysterious person.  Pisca briefly pondered Enelle's accent.  She'd easily identified Orik's origins through his voice.  Perhaps there was some clue here as well.  And that mask.  That was unusual, and possibly, not unique.  There were groups that wore masks not only to hide their faces, but also to identify themselves as part of that group.  Maybe this was something like that.

Even as she pondered these questions, Pisca entered the short corridor and approached the space where Enelle must surely be standing.  "Lets get her, Stomper," she said.  She swept the mighty ARD through the space in which the mysterious Enelle stood, a distracting sweep, a diverting sweep.  And, perhaps, largely because the strawberry blonde gnome was in the midst of her various ponderings, she did a very poor job of distracting and diverting.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

Liseth's water fell out of the air in front of the open door, but apparently onto nothing.  Kerr's arrows whistled through the space as Pisca probed it with her dagger, but none of the group's weapons struck home.  The emptiness of the door's approach was confirmed when Kellan stormed past Pisca and through the moistened area before coming to a sudden, head-crunching stop as if he'd just run into some sort of invisible wall.  The unexpected impact caused Kellan to lose his balance--he fell to the floor with a thud, shaking his head and suddenly very glad he had been wearing his helmet.

Cato's vigilance against their invisible opponent was for naught as the cloaked figure appeared immediately next to him, already in the process of leveraging its weight against the scholar's to shove him across the room.  Caught off balance and unable to brace himself, Cato went flying across the empty dining area into the southern wall, catching himself with one hand, turning to see the mysterious person already claiming his former space and trying to open the door.

"There!  He's there!"  Yelled Kerr in surprise, choosing a pronoun at random as the person appeared and shoved Cato out of the way.  The young paladin chose to save the puzzle of exactly what had just happened until after their opponent was safely neutralized.  "He's going through the north door!"  Kerr drew yet another arrow, praying to the gods that he'd have better luck with his shots this time around.

Kellan cursed loudly as he impacted the door and lost his footing, clattering to the ground where he flailed for a second and the pain in his shoulder flared. Using his pole axe he hauled himself to his feet and muttered darkly as he turned and stalked back into the room where their mysterious assailant was.

She had expected to see the flash of his polearm as it struck over her head and into the space beyond.  That's the way she had pictured it, at any rate.  That's the way they had done it before.  Instead, Stomper himself ran past her and ...

... and it all made sense.  That twinge.  That subtle disturbance in The Force.  It came and went so quickly that she'd hardly paid it any mind.  Then Lysa was shouting, and the moment came and went.  But, that's what it had been.

"Illusion.  Sorry, Stomper."  Most other gnomes had an affinity for illusions, but it was something that Pisca had never taken to.

Then there was Kerr Mollin's shout from behind.

"Yup.  Illusion."

"Sorry, Stomper," she said as he got up and walked back into the other room.  "Sorry," she called after his retreating back.  "Stomper."

"You," the gnome stepped to the corner and addressed Enelle in a Very Stern Voice.  "You're not going anywhere."  She drew back her arm and flung the ARD around the corner, watching as the mysterious ManWom dodged the magic weapon with casual ease.

"Oh, badgers," Pisca cursed to herself.  Seemingly otherwise unconcerned at her failed throw, the gnome took a moment to tuck her kit back into her pouch before reaching up to catch the returning ARD.  "At any rate, you aren't going anywhere, you.  That's because *I* locked the door."

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

Then there they were!  Suddenly appearing just before Liseth's eyes, the masked mage threw Cato across the room in order to get at the door in order to escape.  It had been a trick!

The girl was startled by the sudden appearance; and even as their opponent struggled with the door he seemed to twist and doge away from all of the attacks her friends made to try and stop them getting through.  But then she saw a huge opening as he twisted and dodged, taking his attention away from her.  This was the opportunity she needed to knock the masked mystery mage out with a well-placed bolt...

"We will find out what you're doing!  And we aren't the ones who will suffer!"  Liseth aimed her magical crossbow; it was nearly comical how easy it seemed to be at this range.  "Your goddess Lamashtu is all that is evil and horrible, but we have the protection of all of the gods of good who stand against her!"

Pulling on the mechanical crossbow's firing mechanism, Liseth released her shot to see it fly true; striking the mage directly with more force than a projectile its size had right to have.

At the same time, a slight click was heard coming from the weapon itself.  The girl diverted her attention for just a moment to see that the large clip where the bolts were kept had pushed itself out of the body of the weapon.  She'd never seen that before; but she was pretty sure that it meant that she had fired her last shot.

She pulled the loose clip from the crossbow; somewhat satisfied that she was a lot better of a shot than she thought she was.  And happy to have such a useful, nonlethal weapon so that she could help her friends fight.

The cloaked figure struggled with the door before realizing that it had been disabled.  Hissing with annoyance, the person turned and slashed at Kellan as he passed by, but the off-balance strike was well off its mark.  The figure ducked under Kerr's arrows, quickly identifying the other exits from the room and assessing its chances of reaching each of them.

It was at that moment, when her opponent's frustration was at its highest point yet, that Liseth's bolt struck home, hitting it smack in the forehead, directly between the eyes.  The anonymous figure's head rocked back, mask slightly askew.  Then it dropped to the floor, unconscious.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

Kellan glanced behind himself with an approving look as Liseth floored the figure with a bolt to the skull before he approached its prone form, anger still evident in his movements. He kicked the knife away then knelt where he loosened his manacles from where he kept them on his belt and applyied them roughly with a metallic snap . With little ceremony and none to gently he began stripping and searching the figure, pulling away the mask to see who had been tormenting them.

Cato watched as Kellan manhandled their prisoner, wincing a little at the guardsman's rough treatment, but chose to remain silent.  The wizard likewise felt angered by their now-defenseless foe, but not as much as Kellan, perhaps.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

*splap*

The ARD slapped itself into the palm of Pisca's waiting hand.  "Nice shooting, Lys," said the gnome.  "When we get back home we should have someone look at the crossbow.  Could be that there's more to it than we know.  Who knows.  Could be a Space Gun," she said, without further explaining just exactly what a Space Gun might be or how she had come to know of such things.

She stood for a moment with her head poised in an attitude of listening while one hand slowly slide the ARD back into its sheathe.  "Alright then."  Breaking from her listening pose, the gnome slipped to the side of the fallen Enelle, whispering to the others through her magic even as her small hands began to search the body.  "Lets let some of the mystery out of this, shall we?"

Pisca began to part the loose, dark clothing and cloak, then she changed her mind.  "And lets start with ... the mask."

Perception checks, please.  One to listen for any unusual activity beyond the doors.  And two, to thoroughly search Enelle.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

Finally, down they went.  Liseth was glad to have finally been a significant help, even as Kellan gave her a look of approval.  But she still had mixed feelings about shooting people, even with magical, nonlethal bolts.

"A Space Gun?"  Liseth decided to dismiss whatever it was Pisca was talking about.  As her friends went about checking the unconscious body, Liseth focused on retrieving a new bolt cartridge and figuring out out to get it into the crossbow.  It took a lot of difficult cramming before the small girl was rewarded with an audible click.  She would have to slap it in harder next time.

But there were more important things to concern herself with than a stubborn crossbow!  "Are you okay Kerr?"  The acolyte stowed her crossbow back at her side as she went towards her boyfriend.  She checked over the injuries on his arms, gently probing them with her fingers.  "You said that the knife was poisoned.  Father Zantus gave us a potion to help against poison; do you need it?"

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

Kellan tore off the cloaked figure's mask to reveal a pale-skinned human male with vaguely-Chelish features.  The man's face was unremarkable, and wouldn't really have stood out in a crowd had he visited Sandpoint.  Short, dark hair framed a face that was seemingly now at peace, although Kellan thought it looked slightly cruel.

Of course, Kellan's recent experiences with the man may have colored his perception.

Kellan and Pisca's search of the man's body did not reveal much in the way of clues about his identity.  He seemed equipped with nothing but a sheath for his dagger and a small, sturdy, half-empty vial of yellowish liquid.  A small pouch at his waist contained a few coins of Magnimarian minting, but since most of the coins circulating the area were of such vintage they did not provide much of a clue to the man's origins or purposes.

The only other item of interest on the man was found in a small, secret pocket Pisca found on the inside of his robes.  This cunningly-concealed compartment contained only one thing:  a pitch-black card embossed with a golden, stylized number seven.

*****

Kerr looked away from the search of the man's body, smiling at Liseth's concern about his well-being.  "I think I'm okay," he said, giving her a reassuring hug.  "I worked with Father Zantus a lot on potion brewing, did you know that?  Some of those potions used some dangerous plants, and I--of course--managed to poison myself once or twice."  He gripped his throat with his free hand, pantomiming the scene with bug eyes and a lolling tongue.  "So I know what it feels like to be poisoned, and I don't feel that way now.  I think I managed to fight it off.  Although maybe," he shrugged shamefacedly, "it affected my archery a little.  I had so many easy shots at that guy," he glanced toward their unconscious opponent, "and I just missed."  He huffed out a disappointed breath.

But just as quickly as it had gone, his smile was back, bigger than ever.  "But YOU didn't!"  He said, twirling Liseth around in a move that would have done him proud had they been in a dance hall.  "Those were some amazing shots you made!"  He paused, giving Liseth a look of greatly-exaggerated suspicion.  "Wait, have you been holding out on me?  I bet you're a famous sharpshooter back home, aren't you?"

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

"I'm going to take this!"  With both hands, the gnome held high the grotesque one-eyed mask.  "Oh yes," Pisca said.  "This is just what a gnome needs in her collection."

"How long do you think she'll be unconscious, Lys," asked the gnome, mis-pronouning the human's gender at first for the sake of continuity and balance.  "I think he's much to dangerous to leave in a state of wakefulness.  Even manacled as he is.  There are ways to slip out of those things, you know."

"He certainly does travel light, doesn't he?  No Powerful Magic Weapons™.  None at all.  Just this ... card.  Black with a golden Seven.  I wonder what that means?  I wonder what the one-eyed mask means.  I wonder a lot of things," mused the gnome to herself.  "What do you make of this, Cato?" she said, as she first handed off the card and then tucked the mask into a safe place in her pack.

"Well, we still need to rescue Friar Gabriel, right?  But, I don't trust Enelle alone here by himself," Pisca said.  "Or, maybe I should call you something else.  Though you're still Not Lyrie.  Maybe I'll call you Seven.  Seven of Nine.  Though you don't look a thing ... "

"Wait.  How many Runelords did Brodert say there were, Cato?  Wasn't it seven?  Hmmm.  Well, we'll have to ask him when we get back.  In the meantime, I think we should take Seven here with us.  Lets go rescue Friar Gabriel.  I'll leave these doors jammed shut for the moment.  For safety," she added as Pisca tucked one of Seven's booted feet under one arm and began dragging the man's unconscious form back in the direction of the prison where they had found him in the first place.

Knowledge checks to know something about the card.  All knowledge checks, please.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

"Well, I'm just glad that you're...eek!"  Liseth was cut off by a surprised squeal when Kerr spun her around.  "Kerr!"  The awkward girl wasn't the most nimble of dancers at the best of times; caught so completely off her guard she would have fallen had Kerr not been there to catch her.

"Tell me before you do that!"  The short blonde held onto Kerr while she regained her balance; finally looking up at her much taller boyfriend.  Her azure eyes softened, and then began to sparkle, "This isn't where I want to have our first dance anyway."  She smiled.

"But I think I'm about as far away from being a famous sharpshooter as someone can get."  She giggled at Kerr's suggestion, "I haven't used a crossbow since Daddy finished training me on how to shoot one.  He wanted to train me with a shortbow too, but I was never any good at drawing the bowstring back."  She glanced at the unconscious, and now unmasked, man while Pisca and Kellan searched him.  "I think I just got really lucky."

Pulling herself away from Kerr, after a light kiss on the cheek, Liseth brought herself back to the situation at hand.  "He should be unconscious for at least an hour, Pisca.  Unless someone wants to wake him up."  Liseth approached the group, stopping to pick up the fallen dagger which had stabbed, and attempted to poison, Kerr.  She carefully touched only the handle, and after a few moments of looking around wiped the blade clean of blood and poison on one of the discarded rugs laying against the wall of the room.

"Wait Pisca, let me check his injuries."  Liseth knelt next to the unconscious body.  He didn't look quite as scary after having his mask removed.  She examined the wounds closely, sparing a moment to give a warning to everyone about the small vial and it's yellow liquid.  "I bet that's full of poison, for his dagger.  I would be very careful with it..."

The acolyte stood from her examination, and offered the fallen man's dagger to Cato.  "Do you think that maybe his dagger is magical?  Maybe we could use it, like Pisca's magic dagger."

"Alright..."  Liseth straightened all of her belongings.  "I think it's about time we rescue Father Gabriel.  I hope he knows something about what's going on here at Thistletop."

OOC:  Heal check to determine how long 'Seven' will remain unconscious.  He should recover 1 nonlethal damage per level every hour.

Also, Knowledge Religion to know about the mask he was wearing?  Does it relate to Lamashtu worship at all?
