Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

There couldn't be a more effective signal than Kellan shouting the name of Sandpoint at the top of his lungs.  Liseth released the divine energy to blanket her friends in the gods' blessing as she issued her own cry, "Sarenrae!"

The final battle had begun.  Liseth hurried up next to Kerr where she could be of more help; and peek at the scene ahead of them.  Nualia was startled, that much was certain; she was sitting in her chair with Kellan's poleaxe threatening her.  From the experiences that Liseth had seen with Kellan and his poleaxe, that was not a good place to be.

Her crossbow was in her hands before she even realized it, but there was no way that she would be able to get a clear shot at anything.  Not with Pisca and Kellan each in front of her, and those devil dog monsters already getting worked up to attack.  Instead Liseth looked to who she could help with another blessing.

"Let Desna guide your hands and your will."  The acolyte reached her shielded arm to touch Pisca on the top of her head, just as the gnome launched an expertly-aimed Befuddler at one of Nualia's dogs.

Then Liseth put her attention back to Nualia, her eyes drawn to the horrid claw that she had replaced one of her arms with.  How could this be the girl raised by someone like Father Tobyn?

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

Pisca's Befuddler flew through the air and hit her target hound right in the nose, creating a puff of noxious vapor around the creature's head.  It immediately began coughing and retching, scratching at its muzzle with its paws in a vain attempt to clear the toxic powder from its respiratory system.

The other dog, ignoring its companion's distress, raised its head in the air and let out a blood-curdling howl.  The hound's baying felt like a portent of doom, as if the last chance of victory had been snatched from one's grasp and the only available options were to flee--or to die.  But each party member was able to resist the dog's unnerving wail, quickly recovering whatever confidence they had lost to it.

The silver-haired woman, who everyone in the party knew must be Nualia, stood from her chair and drew her wicked-looking bastard sword.  The finely-wrought steel of the blade gleamed in the firelight, and her preternatural beauty was even more pronounced as she drew herself up to her full height.  The woman stepped back to the corner of the room, away from the reach of Kellan's polearm, her free hand manipulating the air as she muttered a prayer to her evil goddess.

The lights in the room flickered, as if unseen forces battled each other for predominance in the confined area.  Kellan felt his polearm shiver and reverberate, as if something was attempting to rend it asunder, but in the end whatever force or power upon which Nualia had called was simply not up to the task of destroying the young guardsman's weapon.  The silver-haired woman's eyes widened at her failure, then narrowed in annoyance.

Apparently Sandpoint's Saviors had their own divine partisans.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

Cato sprung into action, moving past Liseth and Kerr even as he dug around in his spell component pouch until...Ah, there it is... the mage thought to himself.  He brought out a dusting of shiny powder, and brought it up to his face, sprinkling it down to be blown as he spoke: [Language unknown: Atistated ill Yinwhitin!], the dust flying out, infused with sparkling motes of light, which exploded between Nualia and her hell-dogs, covering all three with a liberal helping of the energy-infused dust.  "We'll see how well they fight blind," the wizard sent to his companions.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

Kellan felt a surge of energy run through his pole axe, but as he tightened his grip on the trusty guard issued weapon it seemed to run it's course leaving it whole and intact.

Bolstered by their apparent success, Kellan stepped boldy forward and cocked back the pole arm before he lashed out at Nualia in a blur of metal and sound, his newly lent strength allowing him to treat the heavy weapon as if it were no more than a broomstick.

Everything else seemed to fade away and there was only himself, Nualia and the weapon in his hand. Just a little more...a little longer, and they could all go home.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

White knuckles clutched fiercely around Sarenrae's symbol as Liseth paled in response to the unearthly howl released by Nualia's devil dog.  It was almost the same feeling as she had felt just yesterday, from the shrieks of those flying monster heads.  All of her fears and anxiety were brought to the surface.

She wanted to run, to hide; just get away as fast as she could.  She almost did; except that no one else was running away.  As frightening as those monsters were, Liseth couldn't leave.  Her friends needed her there to support them!

"May you have Desna's luck, tempered by Iomedae's courage and Sarenrae's compassion."  A shaking hand released the divine focus that hung around Liseth's neck to touch Kerr.  The words and the gesture were as much for the girl as they were for her boyfriend.  Reassurance that they finally had the upper hand, that they would defeat Lamasthu's plan; despite how strongly her minions tried to convince them otherwise.

And then she rose her crossbow.  There were no illusions in her mind that taking Nualia alive would even be possible; but there was precious little else that Liseth could do to support her friends.

Pisca screamed.  Her high pitched gnomish voice rang in harmony with the terrifying howl of the Demon Dog.  And the scream went on and on and on.  And ...

"Well," said the gnome as she sucked back a lung full of air.  "That was refreshing."  She came in low behind Stomper, dagger sweeping up and across the face of the Demon Dog.

"Don't you hurt my friend!" she shouted.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

Cato stepped into the alcove with the broken statue, peering into the Observation Room and setting off what looked like a full parade's worth of glittering confetti inside the room.  The silver-haired woman seemed unfazed by the display, but both dogs reacted visibly to the effect, snarling and yelping and blinking their eyes as if they were suddenly rendered unable to see.

But Nualia could not ignore Kellan's poleaxe.  The young man stepped into the room and delivered a solid, overhand chop to the woman's torso, nearly driving her to her knees.  Only her steel breastplate saved her from losing an arm to the blow.  As Kellan moved back into a defensive position, he heard a soft voice beseeching Erastil for aid; suddenly an arrow flew over his shoulder, nearly burying itself in Nualia's eye, deflected only at the last instant by forces unseen.

The priestess of Lamashtu still suffered a visible cut to her forehead, though.  Face impassive, but eyes blazing, she strode forward with her bastard sword, dodging inside the reach of Kellan's weapon and offering up her own prayer.  Only the smallest hint of a smile graced the woman's gorgeous face as it returned to the pristine perfection it had enjoyed prior to the party's arrival.

The Befuddler-affected dog had noticeably stopped retching; it had apparently overcome the noxious effects of Nisk Tanner's invention.  Like its fellow before it, it opened its mouth wide and issued a bone-chilling, blood-curdling howl.  But also like its companion, its bay did nothing to chase off the sturdy-hearted heroes who purposed to destroy it.

The other dog, apparently used to fighting blind, savaged Kellan's leg with its razor-sharp incisors.  It took the big guardsman's leg out from under him, causing him to fall roughly onto the Observation Room's hard stone floor.  Kellan could feel a burning in his leg, and then a weakness, but managed to overcome it with a strength of will buttressed by the knowledge that the fate of his home, his friends, and everything he had ever known lay in the balance of this one combat.

Distraction.  What we need here ... thought Pisca Neep Freemish, ... is a distraction.

The gnome sized up the BAS held in the clawed hand of the Priestess of Monsters.  "This is going to hurt," she muttered to herself - inadvertently sending the words also along the currents of her Whisper Magic.  Then Pisca tucked in her head and ran.

"Can't catch me!  Can't catch me, Noodle Girl!" she cried, running straight up the center of the Observation Room to slip in behind Lamashtu's servant.  Pisca stuck out a pink tongue.

"Now, Stomper.  Now.  Get up and hit her hard."

Cato watched as Kellan entered the fray, grinning when the guardsman brought his magically-enhanced strength to use against Nulia.  Moving quickly, the wizard concentrated on his ring for a second, and felt it grow cold as power flowed from the ring.  Holding up a small candle, Cato worked quickly to shape the magic, whispering to himself in a chant: "[Language unknown: Elchch ratenticaeen terpe, oveforand ntehis'allure whwil...]"

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

Panic!  Liseth's determination nearly failed while the second of Nualia's evil monster dogs loosed its own terrible howl.  She felt it, the urge to run away; it was nearly overwhelming this time.  Only the feeling of Sarenrae's presence with her allowed the frightened young girl to hold fast.  The gods had granted them Their blessing, and Their divine presence would see them all to victory over evil.

Liseth stepped behind Kerr to get a better view of the melee, just in time to see Kellan have his feet taken out from under him by one of the evil dogs.  That didn't look good...

"What happened to you?!"  Liseth found herself shouting to Nualia, "How could you be in league with someone so evil and vile as Lamashtu?  Your father was a priest of Desna!  What happened during that fire in the Cathedral five years ago?"

Nualia was too far gone for anything to turn her away from this path of destruction; Liseth knew that.  But there were still things which had to be known, questions in need of an answer.  "Everyone thought that you had died during the fire; is it because you're angry at them for not finding you?  You have to know that they would have been ecstatic if you had only let them know you were still alive!"

To punctuate the remark, the girl let loose with her crossbow.  She had never thought of herself as a good shot, but something about Kerr's presence nearby gave her a focus on her target like she had never known before.

Kellan scrambled to his feet amid the melee, and privately marvelled at the way Pisca nimbly wove her way across the room. He would never be able to do that as long as he lived, armor or no.

Once on his feet he choaked up on the pole axe in the way he been taught when working inside the little cottages and shops around Sandpoint and struck out at Nualia once more.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

Pisca dodged through the Observation Room, easily avoiding the blinded dog to her left and less-easily--but still handily--avoiding the dog to her right.  Unfortunately, her attempt to steal behind Nualia was stymied when the woman's bastard sword reached out and took the gnome's feet out from under her, depositing her on the chamber's hard stone floor with a frustrated exhalation of breath.

Kerr's arrows and Liseth's bolt all flew towards Nualia, but the woman managed to use Kellan's bulk to shield her from the projectile onslaught, although Kerr's marksmanship was such that she just missed taking one of his shots through the shoulder.

Kellan used the woman's distraction to once again connect with a solid blow, choking up on his grip and staggering the woman with a close-quarters attack, denting her armor and knocking the wind out of her.  Ignoring Liseth's shouted questions, Nualia stumbled back, trying to put some space in between her and her armored assailant, muttering a prayer to Lamashtu as she did so.

The blinded dog to Kellan's left ineffectually snapped at the young man, but the one to his right connected, savaging the guardsman's other leg and attempting to trip him again.  But this time Kellan was ready--he managed to fend off the smaller creature's effort to knock him off balance, keeping his feet and setting himself for yet another attack on Sandpoint's least-favorite daughter.

"Oof."  The world turned sideways and the gnome suddenly found herself on her back.  No time for laying about.  Especially as she found herself largely uninjured.  Pisca sprang to her feet, heedless of the sharp teeth and the steely blade that waited for just such a move.

Well, apparently not heedless enough.  She must have flinched.  It didn't feel like a flinch, but one can't argue with results.  Pisca came up and lunged in what she thought was the direction of the Priestess of Monsters, but she met nothing but her own reflection, staring back at her with large startled violet eyes.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

Just barely...Liseth was actually surprised to have gotten her bolt as close as she did, having to shoot around Kellan like that.  But the angle caused it to merely glance off of Nualia's armor.  Maybe next time...

Trying to make another shot was a bad idea.  The melee quickly became cluttered, and the sense of focus she felt a moment ago had gone.  Liseth didn't think she would be able to make a better shot than the one she just had; and wasn't inclined to keep attacking anyway.  Kellan was getting hurt, those evil dogs kept biting him.  She had to heal him!

The devil dogs were distracted by Pisca and Kellan, so Liseth took advantage of the opportunity to sneak herself closer to the fight.  "Don't let the devil dog get me..."  The girl said as she carefully passed Kerr.  One of the dogs was still blinded by what Cato had done, but that other one might try and get her if it noticed her behind Kellan.

"Sarenrae, send us your healing light; mend the wounds of this brave warrior!"  Holy light enveloped Liseth's outstretched arm and she laid a glowing hand upon Kellan.  Instantly, the marks from the bite he had received vanished, as though no such wound had ever existed.

Kellan looked like he was going for broke and planning on weathering the attacks of all three of their opponents while he laid into Nualia with abandon. If that plan would bear fruit however, was another topic.

His next blow went wide, but much like he had done during the Ogre Stomp Competition weeks prior, the miss seemed to spur him on and he reset himself with the intent to hammer another blow home.

And then suddenly, like a warm, soothing balm he felt a wave of comfort and relief sweep over his battered body ad he knew that Liseth had not yet exhausted herself. It was a blessing, and one that he desperately appreciated as he focused on his task at hand.

Cato finished his chanting and directed his will.  For a brief instant, the room was flooded with the smell of gravel as a small portal to the elemental plane of earth opened up.  An instant later, a rocky figure stood behind one of Nualia's dogs, ready to attack.  Cato hurried forward, flanking the dog, and both the mage and the earth elemental attacked in unison, catching the dog between them.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

As Pisca leapt to her feet, the nearby devil dog nipped her on the arm.  She could feel the hound's toxic saliva invading her body, but she easily shrugged off the pooch's pernicious poison.

She found it less easy, however, to attack Nualia herself.  As she began stabbing with her dagger, she felt a divine force pushing back against her--her weapon slowed as if she was attempting to attack the silver-haired woman through a sea of molasses.  Pisca glanced at Kellan to see that the guardsman was having a similar problem; he seemed to be struggling against some sort of unseen force that was interfering with his efforts to finish off Lamashtu's priestess.

To her left, Pisca saw an earth elemental spring into existence and attack the blinded hound in conjunction with Cato, who dashed into the room and thwapped the hairless dog with his staff.  Both the summoner and the summoned hit the hound with their attacks, but neither seemed to have much of an effect on it.  The elemental might have left a slight scratch, but that was the extent of their damage.

Kerr was having similar trouble damaging the other dog.  Although Cato had just moved in front of him, he was still able to hit the hound with one of the two arrows he fired at it.  Yet his attack seemed to do less damage than it otherwise would, glancing off the dog and leaving only a slight gash for his troubles.

The blinded dog lashed out at Liseth but missed horribly, it teeth snapping shut a good five feet from where the young woman stood in the corner of the room.  The other dog was much more successful, grabbing Cato's booted foot in its jaws and upending the scholar, who landed on the floor with an audible "whomp."  While the mage also managed to stave off whatever effect his attacker's bite might have produced, his position between two ravenous Hounds of Lamashtu seemed to put him in a precarious situation.

Nualia, emboldened by her opponents' failure to penetrate Lamashtu's protection, moved quickly past the fountain up towards the higher end of the room.  She then raised her hands, calling out another prayer.  Immediately a thick cloud of mist appeared, blocking everyone's visibility of all but their closest opponents. The foggy conditions only exacerbated the heavy, slobbering sounds of the hounds' breathing and their excited whines at the prospect of further bloodshed.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

Those snapping teeth were too close, Liseth saw that the monster dog was trying to bite her.  And to prove just how bad that could be, right next to her Cato was dragged to the ground by the other snarling monster.  She had just enough time to register that another monster had joined the fight, something Cato had magicked into existence, before Nualia called her hellish mist.

It was strange to watch Kellan and Pisca completely unable to strike Nualia, try and stop her magic.  It was like that time when the girl had called on Sarenrae's protection to keep those goblins from stabbing her...

Liseth gasped as the fog enveloped everything.  It was a two-fold gasp, one of surprise and of realization.  "She's called on Lamashtu's protection!  Kellan, Pisca...you can't strike her!"  That was bad.  But Liseth also knew that Nualia couldn't strike them either.

But right now, Liseth had to do something in order to help Cato; he was too vulnerable knocked on the ground like he was!  And he was hurt; most of her friends were hurt.

[Language unknown: "We tohohi, thoillore i out hoceta ce hi si prooerous!"]  Liseth called out into the fog.  She felt the positive energy gather inside her, but realized at the last moment that her attempt would heal Nualia too!  It couldn't be stopped, so instead the girl gathered all of the energy into herself instead of directing it outward.

Golden white flames erupted from Liseth, covering her entire body.  Her golden hair became a single gout of golden flame  Bright light poured off of her and into the mist.  [Language unknown: "Es...?]  Her voice gained a divine quality about it, a sort of echo.  It sounded like Liseth, but more than Liseth.

It confused her, but she knew instinctively what to do.  Passing over Cato's form and ignoring the dogs, a small portion of the divine fire which made up Liseth's body entered and healed him.

[Language unknown: "Sa ieare iouai artonsorepre of larandearstr Traoulant-herson ofitleosul.  Inhe trear, ]Kerr."  Golden white, fiery Liseth stopped next to Kerr before turning back around.

Pisca turned her head as the Bright White lit the fog in the direction of the doorway.  The gnome turned to the face of the Evil Priestess of Lamashtu, hazy in the mist.  She shrugged, as though commenting to an acquaintance or even a friend.  "Never seen that before.  What now?" she asked rhetorically.  Then the gnome stuck a pink tongue out at the Priestess of Monsters and melted back into the magical mist.

"Stomper, lets kill this dog," Pisca said through her Whisper Magic.  "If we can't get at Noofee Girl, we can at least take away the things she can do to hurt us.  Alright?"

With those words, the gnome took a stab at the Demon Dog's eye.  Even through the concealing mist, she brought the point of the ARD close enough to make any creature flinch.

"Let's" Kellan agreed as he shortened up his grip and stepped in opposite of the gnome. Unfortunately, due to the mist, the magics in the room or his own error, his swing went wild in the melee and he was left frustrated once more.

"Not again...I can't let it happen again" he entreated himself silently, fearing that he was losing his momentum.

Stunned and on the ground, Cato cast about for something to do.  He breathed a sigh of relief as Liseth passed by him, her glowing body healing his wounds.  Watching the movements of the dogs closely, he started to cast warily, trying to avoid leaving himself open to attack.  A sparkling blue barrier sprung into existence around the scholar, and he then cautiously regained his feet.  Feeling somewhat more protected, Cato took a moment to examine the dog in front of him, trying to deduce what he could of its origins and weaknesses.

Meanwhile, the summoned elemental launched a powerful attack against the dog, unimpeded by Nualia's fog.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

Liseth felt a spiritual movement, something like eddies in the fabric of reality, as if unseen divine presences warred over the room in the same manner as their corporeal champions.  The mist hung heavy in the air, a summoned representation of the dark forces who had stained this edifice--and this entire part of the world--with their misdeeds.  A subtle feeling of dread crept over her; could Lamashtu's power in this desecrated temple prove the tipping point in their struggle for the fate of Sandpoint?

Liseth felt the gods' positive energy flow through her as she assumed the aspect of an elemental being composed of pure white fire, an avatar of good in this place of apparently-irredeemable evil.  She began moving toward Cato when she felt a pain in her calf--she couldn't prevent herself falling toward the ground, her unstable legs again betraying her as one of Nualia's hounds knocked her off her already-precarious balance.

Cato was having even worse problems.  The scholar's shrill cry echoed through the room as the other dog leaped upon him as he tried to rise, savaging his throat and shoulder and tossing him back to the ground, bleeding and unconscious.

Perhaps fortunately, Kerr's focus was on Nualia.  He knew they needed to take her down, and that she was hurting.  He dashed into the room, past the two occupied dogs, and drew an arrow.  Nualia sneered at him, as if he was nothing more than a nuisance, but Lamashtu's protection failed her in the face of Iomedae's champion.  The arrow sped from Kerr's bow directy into the silver-haired woman's shoulder, nearly pinning her to the wall as it drew a pained cry.

"You!"  She said, eyes widening with what looked like comprehension.  "Then that means she must be . . . ."  With that, Nualia was off, stepping quickly over Cato's supine body, pointing at Liseth's prone, glowing form.  "Kill her!"  She commanded the dogs before slipping away through the mists to the south.

Kellan attempted to sweep his poleaxe at the offending dog but just missed it even despite Pisca's successful distraction.  The dog had its paws full with opponents, surrounded by Kellan, Pisca, the earth elemental, as well as the fallen Cato and Liseth, but its morale never faltered.  Its eyes gleaming, it looked for all the world as if it greatly enjoyed this challenge.

From Liseth's place on the ground she saw Cato's earth elemental slam the hairless demon dog with a powerful blow, drawing a startled yelp and an ineffective nip in return.  But she soon had her own problems, as the dog who had just savaged Cato stepped over his unmoving body, jaws bared, in an attempt to follow his mistress' order.  Liseth attempted to defend herself, but the padded cloth of her dress offered little protection of the razor sharp teeth of the demon dog, which could rend fabric and skin in equal measure.  Fortunately for the young acolyte, the misty conditions threw off the dogs attack, and its jaws snapped shut mere inches from her forearm.

"Liseth!!!!!!"  Kerr's anguished cry echoed through the room as she cringed back into its corner, trying to protect herself from the two dogs that now seemed bent on her destruction . . . .

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

That hadn't gone well.  On one hand, Liseth's transformation felt absolutely amazing!  And it opened her eyes to the powerful divine conflict taking place all around them.  Lamashtu's evil was very powerful here, but she herself was purity and goodness incarnate.  The positive energy wasn't just coming from her anymore...it was her.

She was filled with confidence like she had never known.  Confidence and warmth, it was almost overwhelming.  So much that Liseth neglected the nearby threats.  When the devil dog bit into her calf there was actually very little pain; she knew that she was hurt, but the pain was nothing at all like she expected it should be.  Then she was down on the ground, with a perfect view as Cato was savaged, and the next dog came to do the same to her.

And then Nualia seemed to recognize both her and Kerr...how was that possible?  At the moment Liseth had to pay more attention to the fact that she was escaping out of the room.  And commanding the dogs to kill her.

[Language unknown: "Loine ntintedin..."]  Her echoing voice answered Kerr.  Nualia had left the room; Liseth didn't have to worry about her at the moment.  [Language unknown: "Chncat bleateing, nd se!"]  The flames composing her body erupted and spread through the chamber, spreading away from the devil dogs and entering the injured bodies of Sandpoint's champions for good.

At this point, the girl ended her transformation.  The flames died and she returned to normal.  It was amazing, but she should conserve her energy.  "Nualia is escaping down the tunnel!"  She shouted to her friends, her speech and language now returned to normal.

Liseth didn't want to risk standing with both of those dogs on top of her...instead she laid down her crossbow and drew out her healing wand.  Something told her that it might be needed soon.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

Cato woke from what he thought was a dream, struggling against demonic dogs and their master, the mastermind of Sandpoint's slaughter, Nualia.  As he opened his eyes to the underside of a demon dog, however, Cato realized none of that had been a dream, and he was still very much in dire peril.  Cato stayed still for a moment, and was rewarded with the thunderous moving of stones not so far away as his summoned earth elemental continued its assault on the other dog.

Based on the reaction, however, it didn't seem the summoned creature hit the dog through the magical mist the blanketed the room.  Cato sprung into action, trying to roll away and stand, hopefully putting the dog between himself and Liseth.  If that plan worked, his next action would be aiding Kellan.  The guardsman seemed to be having better luck than Cato against these creatures.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

Nicodemia.  Evil priestess of monsters.  That was her.  The dark shape in the mist moving ... toward the door.  She was escaping!  Pisca's heart leapt within her breast.  All this trouble for nothing.  She would escape!

But would she?  A small but very confident sounding part of Pisca's mind whispered the question from out of the darkness.  Would the Hand Maiden of Lamashtu give up her Malfeshnekor?  Her chapel? Her minions?  All that she's worked for?  I think not, said the small confident voice.  Pisca almost paused to listen for the sound of cursing atop the clatter of Noo Girl's BAS against the sealed southern door.

Then again ...

The gnome had seen him do it before.  Why not?

"Stomper?  Can you move the dog guarding the door?"  The gnome's whisper came terse over the currents of her magic.  "Then we can ... we can ... someone can ... run out and get Noo Chanko."  Pisca cataloged her friends.  Lysa?  Cato?  Not Stomper.  Who?  "Someone."

"I'll help," the gnome said out loud.  She rolled away from the dog nearest to her and passing behind Kellan fetched up against the wall where she took a swipe at the dog nearest the door, swinging, however, quite wide of the mark.
