Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Kellan stayed silent as he moved behind Pisca, having to cut his stride some to avoid stepping on the gnomes heels. He seemed to be looking in particular for that wounded ghoul, and held his polearm partially beneath his arm as if he was getting ready to skewer anything that might shift in the dark or suddenly reach out from one of the many natural nooks and crannies.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

The party moved cautiously forward into the room.  As she stole through the cavern, Pisca took a close look at the cast-off bits of armor . . . they seemed to be from the same set that Cato had earlier identified as belonging to a Hellknight of the Order of the Nail.  Other than that, the floor of the chamber was clean of bones or any other evidence that undead might be in residence.

Closely followed by her glowing homunculous, the gnome made it safely to the other side of the room and stole into the passage to see what she could see.

What she saw was a ghoul.  A ghoul staring straight at her.  A ghoul that--before she could react--leapt from its hiding place and attempted to bite her with its sharp, slavering jaws, letting out a horrific howl as it did so.

But Pisca's armor was up to the task.  Even though the ghoul managed to nip her arm, it could not bring enough pressure to perforate the gnome's armor or break her skin.

The howl seemed to be some sort of a signal.  Ghouls boiled out of the other passages--one ran straight at Kerr, who was so focused on what was happening with Pisca he didn't even see it until it leapt on his back and buried its teeth in his shoulder.  Yelling with surprise and pain, Kerr turned and managed to shove the ghoul off of him as he reached back for an arrow.

Two ghouls dashed out of the northern passage.  The first ran for Kellan, but the guardsman's incredible reflexes allowed him to decapitate the emaciated undead with his poleaxe before it could close with him.  Cato was not so lucky; he threw up a forearm to protect himself and was rewarded with his own bite.  But the wound was not deep, and neither Cato nor Kerr were overcome by the paralytic poison that was even then coursing through their veins . . .

"WAH!  You're not supposed to be there!"  The gnome pinwheeled her arms uselessly as she staggered back from Surprise Ghoul.

"You are *not* supposed to be there," she then reiterated with much greater conviction as she recovered equilibrium and gathered herself into a tight defensive stance.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Pisca backed into the cavern, focusing solely on avoiding the teeth and claws of the monster before her.

Meanwhile, Cato stumbled back from his attacker, sending a glob of acid sailing wildly over its head.  But Cato's ghoul was distracted from its attack by Kerr, who was reaching for an arrow.  Both ghouls raked at the young archer with their claws, one missing entirely and the other one scraping his breastplate ineffectually.

Kerr repaid their attentions with an attack of his own.  His first arrow took Cato's ghoul through the eye, killing it instantly.  As it slumped to the ground, lifeless, Kerr's second arrow second hit the eastern ghoul in the shoulder.

The ghoul screamed in anger, redoubling its attack on the paladin.  This time one if its claws struck home, raking the back of Kerr's thigh as he twisted to avoid it.  The former acolyte let out a pained grunt, but otherwise focused on drawing another arrow to finish off the ghoul before him.

The western ghoul struck at Pisca's legs, trying to take her to the ground, but the agile gnome was too quick for it.  Frustrated, the creature pressed forward, slashing her with its claws, and one slash found a purchase, slicing open her shoulder.  As the poison coursed through her veins, she felt herself grow more sluggish as the paralysis set in . . . .

Kellan hauled the blade of his poleaxe out of the dirt, leaving a blackened viscous smear as the blood from the decapitated ghoul streaked in its passage. He choked up slightly on the shaft as he turned to face the one menacing Pisca, circling to get a better angle on it before he took it up in an overhand grip and thrusted with the spear point towards the cadaverous creature.

Even with a paralyzed Pisca in the way, Kellan's weapon training allowed him to impale his target ghoul with a smartly-executed thrust.  The guardsman's polearm ran the creature through, exploding from its body with a wet crunch.  The force of the blow threw the creature back, causing it to slam into the uneven surface of the cave wall even as Kellan jerked the poleaxe back through the ghoul's torso.  It slid down the wall, crumpling into a motionless heap on the floor.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

The gnome started.  Or, she would have had she been able to move.  It's a startling thing to see the Jaws of Death in the form of a ravening ghoul suddenly explode into a wet crunch and then fly backwards, slamming into the uneven surface of a cave wall.  It was startling.  But not completely without its gratification.  Within the frozen confines of her paralyzed body, Pisca wondered how she could make that happen again.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

She started gathering energy, ready to loose a blast of divine power onto the ghouls.  But Liseth reconsidered in a split second and instead readied her crossbow.  She'd used so much of her energy already and there was still more to this place.  She had to be sure she was still able to draw on divine aid when they found the heart of the evil here.

"Leave us alone!"  Liseth shouted as she stepped into the middle of her friends.  The crossbow was quickly leveled at the ghoul assaulting Kerr; and in a moment there was a bolt flying through the  air.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Liseth's crossbow bolt hit the last remaining ghoul in the arm, spinning it around just in time for it to take Cato's acid splash directly in the face.  It went down with a gurgling cry, then moved no more, the ambush ending as quickly as it had begun.

"That was fun," Kerr observed, grimacing as he gingerly touched his injured leg.  Summoning divine power, the paladin held out his hand and intoned a prayer.  "[Language unknown: Tiesad, stilsa loat notst sanwilecteen oulbe strardday ennt is astetron o e al hahis.]"

A now familiar blue light washed over the party, healing those who were wounded.  Kerr touched the still-red skin of his thigh, wincing, then focused on the opening at the other end of the small cavern room.  The in-and-out, respiration-like sound from deeper in the complex was a counterpoint to the group's own labored breathing.

Kerr put some weight on his leg, testing it, then grinned at Liseth.  "Think I'm okay," he allowed, walking around.  He saw Pisca overcome her brief, ghoul-induced paralysis.  "How are you doing?"  He asked her.

"I ... I think I broke my chagrin bone," replied the gnome to the Boyfriend in tones of strict seriousness.  "They weren't supposed to be there.  Really."

"Truly."

"Ouch," Pisca said as she walked about in a circle, limping on first one leg and then switching to the other.  "That was painfully humiliating."

"I don't suppose you have any magic to cure that?  Do you?  I don't."  Pisca sighed.  "But, I'm otherwise unhurt.  And I suppose I'll live."

"But, badger butts," she swore.  "That does sting."

"Well, I suppose we should move on.  Hopefully Aldren didn't hear us over the sound of the ocean waves," she said as she moved off into the mouth of the tunnel while still limping on one leg.

And then switching to the other.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Ghouls dispatched, the group headed on through the western tunnel.  It dipped south, then north, before coming to a "Y" junction; one passage continued ahead, while one branched off to the left.

To the left, a narrow corridor led to a room seemingly heaped with cracked bones.

Ahead, the cramped tunnel opened into a vertiginous gulf, a cathedral-like cavern with a roof arching thirty feet overhead and dropping into a sloshing pool of foamy seawater fifty feet below.  A steep stone ledge wound down to these surging depths, its slope glistening with moisture and mold.  A stone door stood in the northwestern wall about halfway down the slope.

The hole was clearly the source of the breathing sounds echoing through the cave complex; this close to the pit, it became obvious that the sound was actually that of the water surging and sloshing below.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

To some it may have seemed an inconsequential detail, but the gnome's eyes roved several times across the slope glistening and slick with its moisture and mold.  She looked back at her human friends as though sizing them up.  Then she pulled her little gnome-light back from the Room Of The Sucking Hole and sent it up the other tunnel.

"Gnome-eating sharks," is all that she said by way of explanation.  Then she followed, creeping quietly behind her light, leaving the dark surging and sloshing waters behind.

Pisca called her gnome-shaped light back and sent it dancing down the eastern corridor until it reached the wall.  The light showed the room's floor to be indeed littered with bones.  The flickering of gnome-light over dirty ivory created the awful illusion that the bones were actually surging back and forth in a macabre parody of the nearby ocean.

Then, from the north of the room, came the sound of movement . . .

"Behind me" Kellan encouraged, making a move to change positions with their intrepid gnome scout before bracing his pole axe against any sudden attacks from the West, the point quivering slightly with his nervousness.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Just looking at the churning sea water in that chasm made Liseth's stomach churn with anxiety.  She was sure they would be going there soon enough, "What kind of place is that to put a door?  What could be in there?"

The snapped bones littering the other passage were no more comforting, nor the sounds from deeper in.  "Whatever is in there must know we're here," the girl mused uncomfortably.  "More ghouls would have joined the others fighting us out here...maybe another bat?"  That was an unwelcome thought, "Something else?"

"Let the divine guide your arm, and your will."  Liseth said a small prayer and laid a blessing upon Kellan.  Whatever was ahead, they would at least be somewhat prepared.

Cato tensed, but was unsure how exactly to prepare.  A dozen possibilities and responses passed through his mind, but without further information, he was frozen with indecision.  Horde of Ghouls?  Fireball.  Single powerful opponent?  Haste.  Defensive spells?  Mage Armor, Mirror Image.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

"Guys?"  Kerr's voice floated down the passageway.  "I think there might be something out here as well."  He paused, and then the party heard the paladin's voice call out, "[Language unknown: Ntewasver, intwilill ce trwiic a alwe paect e for]!"

The sounds of movement from the northwest became louder.  Suddenly, a deep, dry voice said "hold." The sounds stopped, until the voice began intoning the following words: "[Language unknown: Thayin'nceome, aladev i me lianncio m esnopr somoerect earareameare.]"

Then the voice spoke again.

"Attack!"  It boomed.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

"Hold tight, Kerr Mollin.  I'm coming."  Pisca Neep Freemish, now, all of the sudden, filled with purpose, turned from Stomper's back and made her way back through the tunnel.  "Lysa, take my place.  Watch Stomper's back.  Cato, take Lysa's place.  It has a clear sight up both tunnels."

With great caution the gnome slipped around the right side of The Boyfriend's hip and out in front of him, the sharp tip of her rapier leading the way.  Her eyes roved the Ocean Sucking chamber for what might have made the deep, dry voice.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Cato waited at the back of the group, feeling increasingly vulnerable as unknown danger approached.  He practiced the gestures for an illusion spell - the first illusion spell he had cast in years - while he waited for Liseth to move and more information from Kerr and Pisca.

Through Pisca's link, he sent out: "There's a cleric of Asmodeus out there.  I recognize the Infernal Blessing he's giving to his allies."
