Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

"Erastil keeps his children safe, with all the care of a father and the watchfulness of a hunter."  Liseth intoned, reading an excerpt from a strip of parchment.  The parchment lit up and vanished, surrounding Kellan in a protective glow.

Shuffling their order, Liseth placed herself at Kellan's back while Pisca moved to guard Kerr.  If there was an evil priest just ahead, there was no telling what manner of minions he would be sending against them.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Kellan felt something stir within him as a deep pang of homesickness washed over him. Sad, yes and nostalgic, but also the keen reminder that his parents were out there waiting for him to come home, that the citizens of Sandpoint were wondering where they had gone, were praying for them perhaps even now. Shayliss, her eyes bright with enthusiasm came unbidden to his mind. It was not that he had forgotten all of this as they had set forth into the countryside and walked this manses moldering halls, but now more than ever it seemed more imperiled.

And Kellan was going to fight to the absolute, bitter last to make sure that they would sleep soundly once more.

Standing up a bit straighter he rolled his shoulders and seemed to become lighter on his feet as he called over his shoulder aloud, not resorting to the whisper magic.

"Well he better hope his devil his watching!, cause he's sure as hell gonna need it."

He craned his neck to the side to the sound of two loud pops before he braced his weapon against the western hallway. "Shouldn't have come to Sandpoint" he said more softly with steel in his voice.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Kerr took the last moment before the incipient battle to offer up another prayer.  "[Language unknown: Prneac, wasughugh we lochur."]

Then undead came boiling out of the passageways.  First, a tall figure stepped into Pisca's light-gnome.  He was dressed in battered black armor, parts of which hung off his well-built frame.  Kellan could see that the armor was of a piece with the remnants they'd found earlier; and to remove any doubt the man's breastplate was inscribed with the same insignia.

Only the black-armored figure wasn't a man any more.  Its decayed and rotting flesh clung tightly to its bones, and its eyes burned with an unholy light.  Its long, dry tongue lolled out of its mouth, making a rasping sound when dragged against its sharp fangs.

When the creature raised its hand and pointed at Kellan, the guardsman could see that what might have formerly been fingers were now sharp claws.

"[Language unknown: Prmahi.]"  It intoned in the same dry voice.

Kellan felt what seemed like a tug at his polearm, but other than that nothing happened.  The dark cleric--if cleric it was--clenched its claws in frustration.

Unfortunately, fighting off the tall spellcaster's mystic attack distracted Kellan from a much-smaller danger.  Before he knew it, what looked like an undead goblin was biting at the guardsman's calves, and a successful nip at the top of his boot broke the skin . . .

. . . Meanwhile . . .

Pisca stepped in front of Kerr just in time to see two more of the undead goblins rushing towards the lighted corridor.  She spun back and forth, dodging their frenzied bite and in the process noticing that their tattered leather armor bore the image of a mean-looking amphibian.  She continued to dance and dodge as Kerr drew an arrow . . .

"[Language unknown: Houthaons fiin, romio tic elwhes el rutastess ithovethu!]"  Liseth called out and brought forth a blinding, golden white light to surround herself as a halo.  It stayed on the acolyte for mere moments before exploding outward and rushing through the dark passages to envelop the undead.

"Strike them before they recover!"  She called out with failing breath as the brief glow dimmed within the tunnel.  This battle was going to be a terrible one.

Liseth's golden light washed over the combatants.  The ones in the western cave seemed unfazed, but a stark terror took hold of the undead goblins attacking Pisca, and they both immediately fled into the darkness.

"Good going, Lys!" shouted the gnome out loud as the stinking gobbies ran off into the gloom.  But the words of triumph were cut off as Pisca gagged on the smell of the unfortunately quite literally stinking gobbies.

"Badger butts," she moaned.  "That smell."  Still, the intrepid gnome stumbled forward, out into the chamber.

"Cover me, Kerr Mollin.  I think I see ... 'nother tunnel."  With rapier still held in readiness before her, Pisca staggered across to the place she thought the two Literally Stinking Gobbies had, in their lack of righteous goodness, scarpered off to.

Meanwhile, in the other tunnel, the gnome-shaped light separated itself from the ghoulish Hellknight.  In a very gnome-like fashion, it drifted up the tunnel to places unknown.

Kellan threw up his arms defensively as the attack came all at once, and was focused enough on the disturbing figure at the end of the hall to where he did not realize the goblin was on him until it was too late.

He felt Liseth behind him as he tried to back up, felt the walls seem to hem his long weapon in on all sides and struggled to maneuver in the tight confines as the small rotting creature dove and tumbled...

Then suddenly, after a few moments of frustration, Kellan surged forward and used the shaft of the weapon to press the thing against the wall where he attempted to smash it against the rock with his armored bulk.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Even with a shortened grip, Kellan managed to swing the haft of his weapon around to connect with the undead goblin's head, using his superior strength and mass to crush it against the cavern wall with a dull crunch of impact.

As the creature slid lifelessly to the ground, its compatriot stepped up and continued the assault on the guardsman.  But this time Kellan's armor was up to the task, and he was able to dodge the small undead's furious flurry.

As Kellan fought, Liseth could see the black-armored cleric move to the north and out of sight, his purposes and plans known only to himself.

. . . meanwhile . . .

Pisca ran after the fleeing goblins, skirting the slick ledge of the sinkhole to find a small opening in the western wall of the large room.  Peering down the corridor, she could see that it turned to the south, and at the end of it stood one of the goblins, apparently recovered from his temporary fright.

Kerr, following up behind her, sent an arrow down the passageway that buried itself in the goblin's chest.  Completely ignoring it, the creature stepped forward and attacked Pisca with a fury, his bite managing to close on her forearm.  Fortunately the goblin wasn't able to get a firm hold on her arm and Pisca was able to jerk it away, overcoming the paralyzing poison just in time to see the goblin renew his attack . . .

[Language unknown: "Sa ilhoho, Ivevorlar,"] growled the gnome as she tore her arm from the fetid - but oddly dry - mouth of the undead goblin.  Even through all the sick stomach ill feeling, her senses felt as keen as they'd ever been.  Beyond the curve of the tunnel was the dim light of her magic.  And she could hear sounds ...  Sounds.

"Bring the Licktoad down, Kerr Mollin," she then added in Common, as the point of her blade wove a dancing pattern in the air before the face of her evil foe.

Between Kellan and Cato's magic badger, those goblins were torn apart.  Liseth spared a moment to ponder the holy badger, but when Kellan charged after the undead hellknight she was right behind him.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Kellan swung his haft about, ready to take on the second undead goblin, when a glowing blue creature appeared next to it.  The thing was a stocky, muscular mammal the size of a badger, and its snarling lips revealed a mouth full of yellow teeth.

What those teeth did to the undead goblin does not bear repeating.  As much combat as Kellan had seen to this point, and as much training as he had received, he had never quite imagined the kind of ferocity with which the bluish badger battled its opponent.

The undead goblin had no chance.  In seconds, it lay fileted on the floor as the badger continued tearing into it, perhaps to ensure it remained dead this time.

The way was clear.  Kellan resumed a normal grip on his polearm and stepped forward into the room, only to find that the undead Hellknight was directly next to him!  Fortunately, the cleric was busy casting a spell, which allowed Kellan to stumble back, set his feet, and attack.

Kellan's polearm sped towards the creature's neck, but right as it was about to connect his weapon was deflected by some sort of unseen force; his blade clanged harmlessly off the Hellknight's dented pauldron.

The erstwhile human turned his malevolent gaze upon Kellan.  "[Language unknown: Terreante!]" He intoned, pointing just past the guardsman's shoulder.  Liseth, who had followed Kellan into the room, chose this moment to unleash a crossbow bolt at the black-armored spellcaster, but her aim seemed to have deserted her.  The bold buried itself in the wall.

Kellan's gaze followed the cleric's gesture to find that a thin, lanky wolf with reddish-brown fur, white claws, and burning, fiery red eyes had appeared behind him.   It took a deep breath, and fire erupted from its maw towards Liseth and the wolverine.  Liseth's clumsiness somehow helped her to fall out of the way of the worst of it, but the wolverine was engulfed, the red of the fire and the glowing blue of its pelt creating a purplish sheen as it wailed in fury.

The distraction allowed the Hellknight to advance closer.  "[Language unknown: Esutpowh, en om onti rirooudi!]" The pallid creature asked before he turned his gaze on the big guardsman.  "Drop your weapon!"  He ordered.  Kellan felt a tug of obedience, but was able to resist the infernal command.  The fight went on . . .

. . . meanwhile . . .

While Pisca danced, Kerr directed what must have been one of his worst shots in years in the general direction of the undead goblin attacking her.  Grimacing, he grabbed another arrow, and this time he struck true, taking it through the mouth and felling it instantly.  The passageway lay open, and down it the two heroes could hear the distant din of battle.

Kellan's eyes widened as he glanced back, suddenly realizing how precarious his position was. He did not understand exaclt what was going on here...but it seemed like it would be a face off between himself and one of Cato's undead knight on one hand, and a blue badger against a red dog on the other...

Given his confusion, he fell back on his training, and he hoped that the same techniques that worked against belligerent drunks worked on evil cultists. Rushing forward, he attempted to bowl the thing over with the haft of his pole-axe while kicking out one of the things ankles, a bog common leg sweep, in a most uncommon place.

"Eek!"  Having so recently been set on fire, Liseth reacted immediately when the sudden devil dog exhaled a jet of flame in her direction.  She bolted.

She didn't want anything to do with that fire breathing devil and as quickly as she could carry herself stumbled past the holy badger with flames licking at her heels.  Liseth found herself in the cavern next to Pisca's glow gnome, and just across from one of those horrid goblin ghouls.

"Kerr!  Pisca!  It magicked a fire breathing dog at us!"  Liseth focused on simply protecting herself until she managed to get her bearings on the situation.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Cato's summoned wolverine advances forward, moving to cut off an avenue of retreat for the undead cleric.  Snarling, the angry beast turns its attention on the cleric, a whirlwind of tooth and nail, its claws and teeth giving off a radiant glow as it does so.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

"Good going, Boyfriend," said the gnome over her shoulder without looking back.  Her focus was to the fore, ready and determined, even through a face that was pale and awash with feelings of nausea.  "Lets go.  I hear mischief."

Pisca plunged into the tunnel and appeared within the small cave just in time to see ... a badger, all aglow in bluish light, as it stepped up to block the exit of a black armored figure that was not Stomper.  Ignoring the cowering gobbie in the corner, the intrepid - though presently somewhat sickly - gnome rushed across the cave to plug all escape for the black knight.

"What's your name?!?" Pisca demanded.  And, oddly enough, she was talking to the badger.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Liseth's movement drew the attention of both her opponents.  She was able to dodge the Hellknight's swipe as it tried to take her feet out from under her, but that imbalanced her, allowing the Hellhound to grab her dress and pull her to the ground.  Fortunately her complete focus on protecting herself kept the Hellhound from doing any real damage, but she was still in a bad position, lying on the floor next to two infernal abominations.

In response, Kellan easily took the undead cleric's feet out from under him, spilling him to the ground as well.  Cato's acid bolt came flying out of the corridor, but the Hellknight's position on the ground and the difficulty of targeting around Kellan and the summoned wolverine made it a very difficult shot, and the wizard missed.  The wolverine didn't do much better; it was clearly still distracted by the corpse of the goblin it had originally torn apart.

From the ground, the Hellknight again pointed towards Kellan.  "[Language unknown: Derovebutica, ou tr wh inedaymenter!]" It intoned to its deity before addressing Kellan.  "Drop your weapon!"  He ordered.

Kellan felt an irrestible urge to let go.  He was able to take a swipe at the cleric as it stood, but then felt his fingers open and his polearm falling to the floor.

Meanwhile, Pisca ran in to harrass the undead cleric from the north, and Kerr stepped into the room, sending an arrow towards the undead goblin cowering in the corner.  The arrow missed, clattering off the cave wall as the creature continued to try and make itself as small as possible, cringing away from its tormentors . . .

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

With her face in the dirt and a fire-belching monster hound rampaging behind her, Liseth felt she was in a bad spot.  When it released her for just a moment the acolyte was sure its biting jaws would be just behind.  She did her best to not be in that same spot.

Scurrying across the ground like a blonde squirrel, Liseth pulled herself away from the hellhound and back into the passage from where she had been earlier.  Then spun into a sitting position and, expecting it to be right behind her, brought her small shield to cover herself from the front.

The problem with standing up was that everyone was always waiting for you to roll over so that you could get on your hands and knees before rising.  Your back would be turned.  They would be waiting for that.  Pisca was.  The Not Quite Dead Hellknight obliged, and Pisca stabbed.

Emboldened, and, perhaps a little overeager, the gnome stabbed again.  Ook.  Her blade clanged harmlessly against the Hellknight's Hellish and Knightly armor.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

As Liseth crawled away from the swirling melee, the black-armored cleric swiped her with a claw, scraping her calf.  At the same time, the hellhound pressed its attack, literally nipping at her heels, but the young acolyte managed to swing her legs out of the way just in time to avoid any damage.

The hound was about to pounce on Liseth when the cleric spoke.  "[Language unknown: Difiri alugh notproess enthei!]"  It grated, its dusty voice evoking cobwebs and death.  The hellish canine turned from Liseth and snapped at Kellan, its jaws clanging off the guardsman's armor without effect.

In the north of the room, Kerr drew two arrows and sent them speeding towards the cowering goblin, but neither one hit.  Kellan had similar problems; he was lucky to hold on to his flail as he ineffectually swept it towards the cleric's legs.

The summoned wolverine, growling and slavering, jumped at the undead cleric, teeth bared, but seemed to be repelled from the creature by some unseen force.  It simply couldn't manage to touch the Hellknight, much less damage it.

Cato's acid bolt again went zipping through the combat, missing everything and splashing into the wall, where it briefly sizzled.  Pisca waved her dagger at the cleric, but was unable to penetrate its armor.  In fact, she found its undead flesh to be unusually, unnaturally tough.

The goblin in the corner finally overcame its fear and jumped towards the glowing celestial badger with claws extended.  It connected twice, once with each of its claws, causing the wolverine to snarl in furious pain.

Rather than continuing to attack, the cleric placed a hand to its chest.  "[Language unknown: Ckro-atsi, etonla ilreai n trpre ticlintio!]"  It called, and suddenly a black and red power flowed from its body, enveloping the room.  Each member of the party felt drained, as if the leeching black flood had rent part of their life force from their bodies . . .

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

"Pisca, swap places with my wolverine!  He can only take a few more hits before he returns to wherever he came from, and he can do more damage than you."

The advice given, the wolverine swaps places with Pisca and resumes its assault on the undead cleric, now benefitting from Kellan's flank.  The wolverine attacked, only managing to land a single bite against the cleric.  Cato flings another splash of acid, but it misses again, sizzling against the wall.
