"What?  Yeah.  Alright," the gnome shouted back over the din.

Fighting next to a badger ... Ook, the shame.

Pisca slaps the flat of her slim blade against the Hellknight's dark armored thigh.  The meeting of steel on steel raises a clang designed to distract.  "Get him, Stomper," she growls.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

The scratch she received was a small price to pay for getting out of that situation, and Liseth knew it.  As she stood, the acolyte watched as the undead battling Kellan released a surge of dark, sapping energy; she gasped as it washed over her.

"That's concentrated evil!"  She shouted; this monstrosity was channeling pure evil the way she called on divine light.  She reacted immediately, grabbing Serenrae's Symbol about her neck and intoning a blessing, "Serenrae, I beseech your light against this darkness!."

The blessing of Sarenrae's flame enveloped herself and her friends for the merest of moments, leaving the lingering aftereffect of hope and valour.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

The summoned wolverine again bit and clawed at the undead cleric in a fury.  But it could not seem to contact the creature, which only seemed to heighten the glowing badger's rage.  While yet another acid bolt from Cato sizzled its way into the wall, Liseth prayed to Sarenrae, invoking her aid against the servants of evil that confronted the party.

Things immediately began to go better.  Kerr finally found the range on the last undead goblin; one of his arrows perforated its back between the shoulder blade and the spine, pitching it forward.  And as Pisca distracted the Hellknight with her rapier, Kellan's flail crashed into it with a satisfying crunch, knocking it slightly off-balance.

The evil priest recovered from Kellan's blow, again placing a hand to its chest.  "[Language unknown: Thicwene, allkorout leetno t om eethev!]"  It called out, and once more the dark, bloodstained power flowed from its body and through every living being in the room.  Each member of the part felt weaker, almost winded, as if their very souls were diminished.

The hellhound nipped at Kellan but failed to even scratch the guardsman's armor.  The goblin, heedless of Kerr's arrow, clawed the summoned wolverine until it vanished.  The creature stepped closer to its master, claws and teeth bared, it's rasping growl a cruel imitation of breath.

Kerr fired again, this time taking the undead goblin in the head, dropping it to the ground.  His shot at the Hellknight was less effective, glancing off the creature's armor . . .

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

*CLICK*

It was an audible, mechanical noise that her special crossbow made in order to indicate to Liseth that the bolt she had sent into the melee was the last one loaded in the sizable case.  With the click came the sudden realization that she had been holding and using the crossbow in the wrong way this whole time!

But there was little time to dwell on this epiphany.  The battle was still going and Liseth was quickly running out of options for ways to help.  There was no way she could get a bolt to hit an enemy with her friends engaging them in such a battle.

"I'm going around!" The girl called to her friends as she withdrew down the passage.  Maybe she could get a clear shot at these evil monsters if she were in the same cavern as Kerr.

Uh oh, thought the gnome to herself as the dark and towering figure of the Maybe Not So Freshly Deceased Hellknight stepped up next to her, replacing the Surprisingly Cooperative Badger.

Pisca leapt away with the bitie teeth of the infernal hound nipping at her heels.  She came up in a crouch with a small pat of butter in one hand.  "Eem fágtha in áit do charta," she chanted as she slapped the butter down against the cave floor.  A slippery grease spread from that point, sealing the entrance into the cave, and extending itself under the feet of the Better Off If He Were Really Dead Hellknight.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Gripping his flail in both hands, Kellan swung mightily at the Hellhound, crushing its side with an audible thump and throwing it, yelping, bodily into the wall.  Bleeding, bruised, and drained, the infernal creature snarled defiantly at Kellan before fading, dismissed from the material plane.

Liseth's bolt missed the Hellknight as she withdrew down the hall, heading up the northern passageway Kerr and Pisca had used a few moments before.  Pisca used her small form and agility to dodge out of the Hellknight's way, avoiding his notice as he turned to concentrate on Kellan.  Gaining some distance on the undead creature, Pisca uttered a word of power, coating the cave floor on which it stood with a slick substance.

The Hellknight tried to keep its balance but failed, crashing to the ground in a heap.  But that didn't stop it from uttering the infernal words of power that again unleashed a torrent of negative energy throughout the room.  Liseth's retreat down the hallway just saved her; Cato and Kerr took the worst of it, each paling noticeably as the blood-dark power leeched his life force away.

Kerr recovered first, drawing two arrows and letting both fly towards the dark cleric as it scrambled on the ground.  The first deflected off of its leg armor, but the second found purchase where the chestpiece met the hip, burying deep with divine purpose . . .

She heard and felt the undead summon it's dark energy, but Liseth was too far fro it to reach.  Fortunately.  Hurrying along, the girl swept through the cavern and edged past the swirling chasm of ocean water until she stood next to Kerr.

"I'm here."  She said as she took a moment to steady herself.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

"Lets do this, Stomper."  Even sick and blasted by the evil energies of the Dark Hellknight, the gnome's face still held an alabaster attractiveness.  Even grim as her expression had turned.

The corner of her eye twitched in a wince of pain as she waved a hand and the slick pool of grease vanished in less than a blink.  This couldn't go on.  She knew it was killing her.  To die.  Again.  The act had lost its novelty.  She stepped into the Hellknight, not so impossibly tall and menacing now that he was flopped down on his back.

"Lets finish this."

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Kellan reversed grip on his flail, swinging it back towards the Hellknight, but this time he could only glance it off of the creature's armor.  Cato drew a wand and moved cautiously towards the creature as Pisca simultaneously approached it from the north.

As they drew nearer, the cleric assessed the situation, then grabbed its holy symbol.  "[Language unknown: Notencsomtic, warofo k pe la tinionnceent,]" it called.

And everything went black.

Except for Kerr and Liseth, who stood just outside the inky reach of the Hellknight's magic.  Murmuring a prayer to Erastil, Kerr drew two arrows and sent them speeding towards the place where the creature had last been.  He heard the first one clatter off the cave wall, but the second caused a satisfying thunk and an angry hiss . . .

From just outside the Hellknight's sphere of darkness, Kerr heard what sounded like a weapon clanging off the cave wall, then a pained cry as Cato's fiery evocation burned the creature.

The darkness persisted.

Kerr drew another arrow, ready for anything.

"What's going on?"  He called into the blackness that contained his friends.

The gnome turned her head.  First this way.  Then that way.  Swiveling her ears as she sought the clinky clank of Hellknight armor.

"Hold on," the gnome whispered through her magic.  "I'm about to try something ... a little ... ris-key."  With great wariness Pisca crept forward into the place where she had last seen the Hellknight before it had been swallowed by darkness.  Her foot lead the way, feeling its way across the rough stone of the tunnel floor.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

The cloud of darkness that suddenly appeared was eerie.  The divine light shining from Liseth's Holy Symbol just ended when it hit that cloud; as though the darkness was absorbing the light.  "Darkness is the enemy of Light..." the acolyte whispered to herself.

"Did you guys beat it?  Is the undead destroyed?"  Liseth had been about to go forward into the cavern, but that eerie wall of darkness caused her to pause.  If it was more powerful than her little divine light, they would be blind in there; the thought of not being able to see scared the girl more than she realized.

If it wasn't destroyed, at the very least there was a momentary lull in the battle.  Liseth took the opportunity to eject the clip from her special crossbow and store it with the others in her knapsack.  She retrieved one that was still full of bolts and snapped it into place.  Best to be prepared, the acolyte thought.

He hated that sensation, hated it, not being in control of his own body. Surely there had to be some sort of defense? right? He made a mental note about talking with Cato about it later.

After he had coiled up the flail and slipped it back into his belt he rested his trusty pole-axe on his shoulder and went to go help Pisca drag the thing into the light, feeling a bit wary about touching the undead, especially when he could not see what he was doing.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Stumbling and fumbling, Kellan and Pisca—mostly Kellan—dragged the undead Hellknight’s corpse out of the shadows it had summoned.  When they emerged, they saw Kerr still aiming an arrow into the darkness, a worried-looking Liseth standing behind him.  When Kerr saw that the guardsman and the gnome were dragging the cleric, rather than fighting it, he slung his bow and helped them pull it the rest of the way out of the magical black.

Kerr thought there was probably something philosophical to say about how the thing’s darkness lingered on after its death, but honestly he was too tired for deep thought.

The party stood around their erstwhile opponent, looking down at it.  Now that they weren’t caught up in the battle, the cruel tragedy of it—that a man who had dedicated himself to upholding law and order had been transformed into a creature at odds with the things he’d believed for his entire life—become more apparent.

How does that happen?  Kerr was exhausted, no, drained from the cleric’s negative energy.  How can someone's death turn them against everything they believed in life?

“Father Zantus doesn’t think that most undead are really the same people they were before they died,” he offered to the group.  “I mean, sometimes they are—liches and such.  But if you’re forcibly converted into one of these things,” his mouth twisted as he gestured to the motionless Hellknight, “your soul has already departed for the afterlife, and whatever intelligence animates your body is . . . something else.”  The paladin felt a cold chill at the thought that he—or even just his body—could ever be turned against the things he loved.  “I hope he’s right.”

Kerr turned to their wizard.  “Do you know anything about it, Cato?”  He asked, curious.  “I mean, this sort of process is as much sorcery as anything else.”

While Kerr talked, Pisca efficiently searched the Hellknight’s body, finding a potion, rent scale mail, a fine-looking cloak, and—hidden in the creature’s boot—a pouch containing a few gems.  The cloak contained a cunning secret pocket that she had almost missed—inside was a letter and a small parchment.  The letter read:

Signifier Carnor,

You have two tasks.  You will begin by exploring the rumors of ghoul activity in and around the area of Bleaklow Moor.  You will determine whether those rumors have any substance and, if so, what might be causing that activity.

Once you have completed that task, you will investigate reports that a deserter from Citadel Vraid might be hiding in Sandpoint or one of the surrounding communities.  I trust that I do not need to instruct you on how to root a deserter out of his hole.  Should these reports prove true, you will apprehend the man and bring him back to the Bastion for trial.

Victory through Discipline,

Paralictor Darean Halst

The small piece of parchment contained an artist’s sketch of a man who looked remarkably like Cato.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Cato made his way from the magical darkness to his companions, surveying the body of the fallen Hellknight.

"He didn't come all the way from Korvosa," Cato said, pointing to the sender of the missive.  "Or at least not directly.  Paralictor Halst leads a unit garrisoned in Magnimar, in the Naos district.  Actually, they were invited there by the Justice Court in Magnimar.  It's one of the reasons I couldn't just escape Korvosa when I left the Hellknights - I had to come all the way to Sandpoint."

Cato shook his head.  "I suppose it's lucky for me that he looked into the ghouls before finding me.  But is also means that we obviously haven't found the creator of the ghouls, yet."

Cato activated Detect Magic with a simple word and gesture, examining the equipment and categorizing what held magical auras.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

"This small piece of parchment contains an artist's sketch of a man who looks remarkably like you, Cato," said the gnome, musing at the skill of the artist more than remarking on either the parchment, the drawing, or the likeness.

"Maybe it's like vampires," Pisca added as she pocketed the gems.  "When you become a vampire a demon takes your body, but it doesn't get your soul.  At least that's what Angel said," she added, without explaining who this Angel was.

"I'm going to take a look at that door."  Pisca slunk around the edge of the Slippery Sucking Pit.  In her hand the parchment with Cato's likeness fluttered with her passage.  As the slippery ledge converged to meet the wall of the cavern, the gnome conjured another gnome-shaped light and directed it out over the dark gaping maw from which the ocean sounded.  Wary of the ledge, Pisca squatted across the hole from the mysterious door.  From below, the rhythmic sounds of the Gnome-Eating-Shark infested seas, hammered at her already sickened head.

"Ook," she whispered to the others.  "I don't feel so good."

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

"That girl we found in the top floor...she was cursed as an undead.  But it was like she knew who she was before, and knew what had happened to her.  She was so sad; so sad and so angry about what had happened to her."  Liseth moved into the larger chamber, following her friends with her light as they dragged the body of the cursed Hellknight.  "What does that mean?"

"Everyone stay together..." Liseth felt drained by the evil power that the undead had summoned against them; she was sure everyone else felt the same.  The acolyte concentrated for a few moments and gathered positive Energy into herself, ""

"Can i see his Holy Symbol?"  Liseth asked of her friends as they examined the body of the cursed Hellknight.  She looked over the symbol; intent on discovering the divine source of the evil energy that had been summoned against them.  "Cato, do Hellknight clerics usually call upon dark power like he did?  Or did becoming undead do that to him, you think?"

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Cato watched as Liseth examined the holy symbol.  "I'm pretty certain you'll find that to be a holy symbol of Asmodeus.  When he cast spells, that's to whom he was directing the prayers."

Cato fidgeted, uncomfortable by the last of Liseth's questions.

"Hellknights care more for order, by any means, than any other morality.  Even though they fashion themselves after the armies of Hell, and many do in fact worship Asmodeus, there are plenty of less extreme members, who might worship Abadar, Iomedae, or Torag.  But, yes, a great many do worship Asmodeus, and it certainly colors the public perception of the Hellknights, which is not entirely coincidental.  Who would you rather cross: a virtuous paladin, or a devotee of Asmodeus?"
