Welcome

I can see that exciting events are transpiring with Mercy and Marion, but I hope the Vril will react to Grimsby and Wandor soon.

Beg pardon, but before I post, I wanted to ask whether you wanted me to make up what I find inside the bomb, or if you wanted to describe the innards yourself, o wise and powerful GM.

Tomorrow I leave for Britain. I will be doing research there until March 21. From past experience at my B&B, I expect to be able to access RPOL, but probably not until late Sunday.

Bon voyage! I'll be in Oxford and London next month from circa the 8th to the 21st for work myself. Uncertain about connectivity while there at this point, but will check in before.

Wow, what do you both do to be able to travel so much? If memory serves, particularly Grimsby, is always off somewhere. Unless you're European? In which case I suppose it wouldn't be such a trek. Mostly I guess I'm jealous! I've never been anywhere of interest. Yet!!! ;)

I'm the sales manager for an academic book publisher that has an office in Oxford, UK as well as our HQ here in NYC. I'll be going over for the London Book Fair. (I'm from California originally and one of the blessings moving to the East coast is that it makes Europe much more accessible.)

I am a historian specializing in the reign of Richard II of England (1377 -1399) for which there are vast amounts of unpublished sources in the British National Archives, so I go over there for research for a few weeks almost every year. I also go to conferences to give scholarly papers and so on.
I apologize for not checking in for several days. I was having some technical issues with the hotel's wifi and also was preoccupied with other activities for a few evenings. I hope to be more regular after this. I have found out that though my Iphone and tablet have problems getting RPOL on wifi this year, the hotel's guest computer works fine.

Oh wow those are both so cool! I am trying to get published in the future so book anything is really awesome to me. It must be so neat to be in such a cool field of work! I read a lot of non-fiction too so academic books are up my alley.

And Historian is something I could totally enjoy doing. I've always wanted to be an art historian specifically because it combines two of my passions, but going back to school is just not in the cards right now.

Thanks for sharing both of you, I get really curious about people's travels since I have none of my own. I'm all for living vicariously through others ;)

I enjoyed art history classes when I was a university student, but I must admit I am not artistic enough to follow up that aspect of history seriously. I enjoy looking at beautiful ancient objects, but I am weak on understanding the skills that created them.

Yeah, that's a good point. I sketch but I'm pretty limited otherwise and painting and sculpting are mind blowing to me. I think I know just enough to realize how much I don't know, which is a ton. I took Renaissance art and eastern art, which included Indian and Japanese and such. They were extremely different but really really cool. Indian art can be....graphic though. Like, really graphic. Some of their temples. Yeah. My favorite were the Japanese woodblocks. Memorizing the artist names though were tricky.

In reply to Marian Holroy (msg # 381):

You may know that in the early days of TV during the Cold War, Arthur C. Clarke wrote a story about the Soviets launching a subversively sexy channel which featured (among other shows) the erotic Indian temple carvings shot from just right angles. Nowadays, I suspect some would find that tame.

I like many of the Japanese prints myself; many are beautiful (Hokusai) and some are funny. I recall one satirizing the 19th century Japanese Meiji government's reform program with what we would call a cartoon of the demons learning to read basic Japanese script.

I've seen some of the temples but did not know that about the soviets! Crazy! And yes, sadly they would seem tame to many nowadays!

And that's hilarious about the print. Political cartoons have been around a long, long time!

Yes, political cartoons have a long history. I have read that there is an obscene sketch of the female Pharaoh Hatshepsut having sex with her favorite Senmut.

In reply to Marian Holroy (msg # 383):

I trust I was clear that Clarke's story was science fiction. The Soviets did not really use erotic Indian temple art to seduce the west. If the KGB wanted to seduce somebody, they used a real human being.

Shoot, I skimmed that and missed that part! Well that makes sense as to why I never heard of it! Haha! Of course weirder things have happened in history. Like the whole bat bombs of ww2. Sorry about that! My excuse is that my life has become unexpectedly crazy. A coworker at my old job I cover for broke her ankle playing roller derby and is out for weeks. Consequently I'm covering more than I'd like and I'm stuffing my schedule with too much to keep my head on. If I'm not perfect at posting for a bit I apologize but I'm sure I can still manage a couple times a week.
