Re: Chapter 2: Covens and Covers
'Don't worry about my sensibilities. I have surveyed many London pubs, and once spent time in a Limehouse opium den.' Penny murmured as Ian apologised for his choice of hide-out, taking them around to the back of the American pub. She allowed herself to be placed on the chair, then straightened her skirts out, still not daring to peak underneath, dreading the sight of her sudden deformity.
She ordered tea from the bar-man then retrieved her first-aid kit from her bag. Being a good and very repressed young Victorian woman, she looked away as Ian undressed, only returning her gaze to him when his shirt was entirely off, since then it was an entirely medical matter. She blinked. She really needed to see a doctor herself after all this was said and done. Penny concentrated on preparing a syringe of morphine, enough to dull the pain, though not enough to leave Ian insensible.
She waved aside Kate's apology. 'Never mind, it had to happen and was bound to do so eventually. I fear Mrs Bently may already have suspected us, and we would only have kept dancing around one another. Now we may fight her openly... And, on that matter, I hope you did not mind me, ah, turning the tables on her?'
'Hold still, please.' Penny injected Ian with a gentle prick. She removed the needle, but had a second ready, having heard much of the modern theories of hygiene. 'Kate, do you require any?' she offered. Afterwards, she began sopping up Ian's bloody wound with a cloth rag. 'It doesn't appear so bad. It's just a flesh wound. I may even stitch this closed — needlework is a useful skill, I've found. Unless you'd rather wait for Doctor von Stein?'
Working away rinsing out the wound with medicinal alcohol, she related her own findings. 'Mr Bently introduced me to Jones — as Jones — and Jones revealed himself as Belial. The Prince of Darkness, or one of them at least, a fallen angel infamous for his foul perversions and lust.' she explained with clear loathing, discomforted even by his creepy presence. 'I'm rather afraid we've made dinner plans.'
Penny halted her work to look directly at Kate with actual concern in her eyes. 'Kate, he knows everything about us: that you're from the future, my family name.'
