Chapter 2.1- A Precious Cargo

John/Stefan/Father Simon:

Westbrook has organized your team with expertise. There are two teams ready for the delivery at the harbor. The first consists of the three of you as well as Lily, the Indian woman with the spirited eyes. She seems to be in charge, though she mentions that Stefan has been given equal partnership in this particular outing. The second team will be waiting in the distance should you run across more trouble than you can handle. It appears to consist mostly of hunters, though in this case they seem more like soldiers than anything else. Their hard eyes and faces depict them as seasoned warriors and it is a relief to have them at the ready. Hopefully there is enough of them though....

As you exit the wagon and head towards the docks, you look at your surroundings. Night has fallen and the gas lamps flicker and hiss as you approach the water. There are many ships, though things are surprisingly quiet. An almost eerie stillness covers the area and all you hear is the sound of the water and an occasional seabird. Lily frowns and pulls out a scrap of paper. Well, according to Kimi's notes the delivery should be to a ship called the Black Rose. I have no idea which one it is. Do we dare split up? She looks uncertain.

Re: Chapter 2.1- A Precious Cargo

Simon motion for them to close ranks. "Whether we divide ourselves or not, give me a moment. Please place your weapons here in the middle and your ammunition."

He takes out his own revolver, removing the chamber and then three more chambers all full. He gestures for them to place their weapons with his own. He takes the Aspergillum from his bag and scatters holy water on them while reading from his prayer book inside his Bible.

"Et dixit Dominus: 'In trecentis viris qui lambuerunt aquas, liberabo vos, et tradam in manu tua inimici: omnis autem reliqua multitudo revertatur in locum suum.' "*

*And the Lord said, "By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Enemy into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place." Judges 7:7, paraphrased

Cast Bless Weapon on the weapons made available.

When he finished he returned his tools to his bag, reloaded his weapon, and put the spare ammunition into his pocket. "These weapons will be far more effective against supernatural evil creatures. They will act normally against people. I strongly urge you not to use these weapons against people, who are Children of God and deserving of a chance to repent."

John placed his revolvers in front of the priest as instructed, if he were to look closely the holy man may notice four names carved into the wooden grip of each gun. Dinah, James, Sarah, Robert. "I've seen more than a few men Ah'd label as evil too Father, but Ah'll do mah best not to shed any more blood than we have to."

Re: Chapter 2.1- A Precious Cargo

Lily likewise puts her weapons in the pile. She has several throwing knives, small three small tomahawks, and a shotgun. As everyone puts their weapons away she gives a nod at Stefan's suggestion. Very well Doctor. I will take your advice. The second team will shadow us at a safe distance, but they should be ready in case things get out of control. Still, things may go sour faster than we are ready for if we're not careful. I have no idea which of these ships is the one we want but we had best find it quickly. Keep your eyes sharp and stay close. She frowns. Your weapons have been upgraded and are now effective against demons. They can kill lower demons, but if there are any of higher power it will be a lot more difficult. Still, we may live through this if we're careful. Let's go.

She leads the way to the eerily quiet docks. The hour is not late yet, but it is dark. The fact that there is no one in sight is very unusual and you can't help but feel tense and uneasy.

He still had not been properly introduced to the Native woman, but he liked her anyway. She reminded him of Penny with her take charge attitude. ooc: moving on with your roll results now ;)

As you look about for someone to ask you are surprised to find no one wandering around. Fortunately it doesn't take long for you to find the ship on your own after a quick search. It is small compared to the others, and in poor condition, but it is marked clearly. No one is in sight. In the darkness visibility is poor, but you both hear something coming from the water. A moaning sound? Father Simon spots it first and to your horror you look down at the water beneath the docks to see dozens of bodies floating lifelessly, some are bumping against the ships and others are slowly floating further out in the bay. The moaning leads you to believe that at least one person is still alive though.

Re: Chapter 2.1- A Precious Cargo

ooc: Just fyi Colin will be joining this thread, though not your group quite yet...just so you don't get confused.

Stefan/John/Father Simon:

Lily helps you fish out the man, who is barely alive. It appears one of his kidneys has been ripped out and he is bleeding profusely. He will likely not live much longer. B-b-black e-eyes! He stammers, shivering violently. It is February after all and the water is cold. W-why? They were my friends! Whether he is referring to his attackers or the victims you aren't sure.

Meanwhile Stefan and John investigate the ship. It appears to be empty at this point, which surprises you. Well, other than blood and bodies of course. Perhaps they were making preparations for the delivery? It looks as though it hasn't happened yet, though where the cult members are you aren't sure. Judging by the efforts made to clear the area, the delivery will be happening soon...

Colin: You sit with the other men, crouched and hiding as best you can given the terrain. Fortunately there are enough shacks and buildings this isn't too hard, though it does make it difficult to see the area clearly. You watch the eerily quiet docks, waiting for something to happen. Ned Wood, a friendly sort of man, crouches next to you. He is the leader of this second group and he's been very welcoming toward you, though clearly some of the other men are a bit wary of so new a teammate. It looks like they pulled someone out of the water. He points to the small group on the dock. Doesn't appear to be doing well by the looks of it. He sighs.

Colin reached for the flask at his hip and took a drink. He knew he should be looking at the dock, but there was a large group of people watching it for him. He took a long pull and smiled. The men of letters may be uptight assholes, but they knew good whiskey. He replaced the flask and crossed himself. He did not know when the action would start, but he knew it was always a good idea to act like it would break out any moment. He nudged Ned, the shotgun clicking against the hard surface of the dock area. "Aye, you can see better than me," he said as his nerve made the Irish accent more pronounced. "What do ye think they are doing?"

Father Simon: As expected, the man dies quickly. Lily watches in respectful silence, though she is constantly looking about them as well. Do you think we missed them or do you think they were just preparing the area? She asks ominously. They may have not wanted any witnesses....

ooc: Sorry, just giving John and Stefan a chance to put in their two cents.

Colin: Ned squints as he leans forward to see better. I'd say trying to save the poor beggar's soul. He says at last. He doesn't look to be with us any longer. He says sadly. I'm hoping we didn't miss them. It's far too quiet here. In this business quiet means death, either coming or going. He sighs. I just hope if they do come they only send soldiers. Soldiers are easy. It's when you get the big shots that you run into trouble. The great thing is that demons are so cocky they don't usually arm themselves. Not used to bullets hurting them. The look of surprise on their faces is pretty satisfying. He chuckles. Not to say you should let your guard down. They'll still be a challenge, but for once we can do something about it.

Lily gives you a rare smile, for most of the time she is either angry looking or deep in concentration. This is a woman who obviously has a past. She is surprisingly pretty when she smiles, but the moment is short lived. As you look for a good vantage point, the sound of an approaching wagon is heard in the near distance. The wagon has several crates and a second one with what appears to be six men follows closely behind. Thus far they haven't noticed you....Lily quickly signals to the second group of hunters who are waiting a ways off, then she turns to you both. Hide! I think I can get closer without being noticed. What do you think Stefan? How do you want to go about this?

Colin: You see Lily moving in the distance closer to the group who is by now unloading the crates. They do not appear to have seen you, though Ned seems unhappy that you've gone off on your own. ooc: You do see the following as well:

Stefan/Father Simon: Lily seems a bit surprised by Stefan's compliment, but she gives a small laugh of delight and gives him a friendly pat on the shoulder. Alright then. Whoever doesn't go down with the spell I suggest you kill as quickly as you can. She whispers to both of you, then she stalks forward, drawing her tomahawk and moving so quietly you didn't think it was possible. She stalks them like a huntress, graceful and poised. The men have started to unload the wagon, moving quickly and with a strength that no mortal should possess. By now Lily is close but still hidden from sight. She readies her tomahawk but suddenly one of the men nudges the other and points in Father Simon's direction. They start to run forward quickly. Seeing they are almost upon her, Lily hurls her weapon and it catches one of them in the shoulder. There is a crackle of almost electric energy and a sizzling sound. The demon snarls in surprised pain and swears. Hunters!!! He shouts and suddenly he raises his hand and Lily is hurled back as though by an unseen force, crashing into a railing. He rips the tomahawk out of his shoulder and grips it tightly, running forward with the others behind him. In the distance you suddenly hear gunshots from where your backup is waiting. It seems the other hunters have their hands full too....

ooc: Ok roll initiative everyone and please go ahead and post your first round of combat. To make things easier on me please post your current hp for each round so I can keep track of how people are doing. Also, post your DC so I don't have to look it up all the time. Stefan- be sure to roll for your sleep spell so I know how many are affected. They do have the chance to make a will save on it too, so keep that in mind. I had to look up more details on it since the SRD didn't have everything. Let me know if you need more details on it. I am assuming that you held off on the sleep spell since Lily was sneaking up with her tomahawk and it would have given it away if you had done it previously. If that is not the case I will adjust my post. Le the fight ensue! :D

Colin was tempted to rush to the aid of the other group, but he knew a cold, hard fact. Heroes died quickly. Always. He was going to take stock and a few seconds to find where he could be most useful. He laid the shotgun down at his feet, the clumsy weapon being dangerous in a close fight. Instead, he drew out his newly acquired knife and paired it with one of his folding knives. While he was absolute garbage trying to fight with two at once, it was never a bad idea to let your enemies think otherwise.

Re: Chapter 2.1- A Precious Cargo

As the demons rush forward, Stefan's spell is activated and two of the demons drop where they stand, clearly unconscious. Meanwhile Father Simon's spell seems to have had an effect all it's own. A bright haze seems to surround him and two more demons stiffen in awe and hold perfectly still. As they hear the exorcism rite they screech in fury, but they make no move to attack. The two demons left look to be a mixture of horrified and enraged. The remaining pair surge forward, their hands raised. You both go flying back into the crates you are taking cover at, the wood hitting you painfully as you make contact. Meanwhile Lily has regained herself and is running towards the wagon with the scrolls, which is now unguarded for the time being.

ooc: Next round! Collin, feel free to join in anytime you feel your character would. 4 out of 6 of the demons are temporarily down, and you do see Lily trying to get the wagon with the scrolls, so there's plenty to do. Also, you are well aware that there are far more demons to come judging by the sounds of your companions....

Simon groans in pain as he hits a pile of boxes. His Exorcism has been interrupted, and thus he will have to try again. He knows he holds two of them in his sway so he looks at them, "You two are on fire, stop drop and roll!"

He draws his pistol and takes aim, firing at one of the remaining  unsuggestable demons.

Re: Chapter 2.1- A Precious Cargo

Colin rushed forward as much as he dared. For him, a normally swift fight was preferred to a brawl, but he was decent at both. These demon things did not play by the rules. He was going to have to take those on the ground without the others noticing. He held his knife up cautiously in preparedness and he inched forward, trying to remain unseen as long as possible. His first target was the unfortunate soul to be possessed on the ground near him.

Re: Chapter 2.1- A Precious Cargo

The demons under Father Simon's control obediently drop to the ground and start rolling. Under other circumstances it would be amusing, but currently you are too busy to enjoy the spectacle.

Stefan and Simon both miss their targets and the demons are closing in by now. They raise their hands, stopping in their tracks as they smile confidently. You both feel a squeezing in your chest as though your heart is being crushed. The pain is overwhelming...Meanwhile Lily starts to turn the wagon around, but stops and takes a shot at one of the demons, likewise missing.

ooc: Please post your next round of combat and please roll a fortitude save so I know how much damage you'll take.

Colin: You appear to go unnoticed and come upon one of the sleeping demons easily...

ooc: I think it's stupid to roll an attack against an unconscious person, so please just roll damage and double it for critical. I will roll his save to see if he lives.

Stefan left the pain and for a second felt fear, but he remembered what he was taught. It is the mind that has the power. Colin frowned at the man on the ground. It seemed a great wrong to slit a man's throat while he wasn't awake and upright. Then Colin remembered that these were no longer men. Without further hesitation, Colin placed the demon killing knife to the man's throat and gave him another smile that went from ear to ear.

Father Simon and Stefan: You both feel as though a hand has been wrapped around your heart and has been squeezing it. You feel dizzy, nauseated, and most of all your heart feels as though on fire. Still, you manage to shake it off after much effort, though you aren't sure how much more you will be able to survive...By now they are almost upon you, looking incredibly confident and walking fast. Lily has the wagon with the cargo, but she is loathe to leave you and instead readies for another go at the attackers, this time with another tomahawk. You also see a man go up to one of the sleeping demons and slit his throat. You assume it must be one of the hunters that came in the second group.

ooc: Next round folks! ;D

Colin: As your blade enters the flesh there is a flash of light and the buzzing sound of pure power. Whatever these men of Letters did to your weapon is clearly most effective. The demon awakens and glares balefully at you with black eyes. He tries to sit up, gurgling and looking surprised to be dying. Blood pours from his throat and he moves as if to grab at you but it doesn't take long for him to bleed out, his eyes returning to their human state as they stare lifelessly at the stars above him.

Simon/Stefan: ooc: I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume Stefan just cast web? If I'm wrong let me know and I'll fix it!

As Stefan's spell is completed, a large silvery web forms, attached to a stack of crates and one of the ships, entangling one of the demons, though the other tumbles out of the way in time to avoid it completely. The demon in the web attempts to attack you as before, but he appears to be having difficulty concentrating. Meanwhile, the free demon is within range by now and he gives Stefan a swift backhand, sending you stumbling backwards with its strength. Release him and I will make your death quick. He growls. Meanwhile Lily hurls her tomahawk but misses, looking extremely frustrated. Get out of there you two! Fall back to me! She shouts desperately.

Colin looked up in concentration from the body of the demon. He crossed himself and muttered in Latin a short prayer. He then darted towards the demon that had just swept the other man aside. He flipped the knife in a reverse grip and stopped short of the thing. He threw his normal knife at the thing, the knife sailing fast and apparently true.  He gave a cocksure smile. "Oi! Hands off the man! Come play with someone more your size," Colin taunted the creature with a come hither motion of his open hand. He noted the movement of the man, looking to turn any telling habits into advantages.

Re: Chapter 2.1- A Precious Cargo

Colin's knife hits true, burying itself in the demon's stomach. However, since it is a normal blade and not the blessed one, it has little affect other than to distract and irritate the man. He turns towards you though, his hand outstretched and a rather nasty smile on his face. You really think your puny pigsticker will have any affect on me?He laughs. You feel a vice like grip around your heart as though he is squeezing it with his fist. It hurts like nothing you've ever experienced and it's all you can do not to sink to your knees. Fortunately, Father Simon's shot does more than get the demon's attention. He gives a cry of absolute fury and pain as the bullet buries itself in his back. He stumbles a moment, and you can see an almost electric sizzle in the flesh. Impossible!!! He snarls, turning his attention to the priest now in shock. It is clear he has been wounded by this, but he's still standing. Meanwhile Stefan seems to be regrouping from the blow he's recently received. The man does not look well. In the distance you hear gunshots firing continuously. They seem to have their hands full.

Re: Chapter 2.1- A Precious Cargo

Simon begins to recite the 23rd Psalm in English. Clearly not a prayer, he prays in Latin, more likely it is simply a way to steel himself for what is to come. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever."

At the same time he thumbs the hammer and pulls the trigger again.

Colin gasped and gripped his heart with his now free hand. He had never felt such pressure on his heart. Maybe in his head after a good night of drinking or after getting thumped pretty well by a nasty, but not like this. In an effort to alleviate the pain, he rushed forward, stumbling a few times as he did. He made a clumsy attack, but ensured that his defenses were not going to suffer. Last thing he needed was for a powerful foe to jump on a momentary lack of judgement. Now, if the demon saw a perceived opening and got his just reward for trying to take advantage...well, that made Colin smirk despite the pain.

Re: Chapter 2.1- A Precious Cargo

Father Simon's bullet hits the demon once more and this time he gives a scream of pain and rage. He nonetheless manages to evade Colin's attack, but he is less concerned with fighting back as he is with running. (attack of opportunity for those who want it!)The demon in the webs has broken free but he is still partly entangled and is moving very slowly the opposite direction in an attempt to escape. Lily has the cart now and waves at you to come over. We need to go, now! She shouts, looking a bit frantic as she is exposed and she is in custody of some rather valuable cargo. I will peel the skin from your faces! The master will feed your hearts to your loved ones when he catches you! The escaping demon snarls.

ooc: So you can take your AoO and either attack again with a ranged weapon, attack the second demon in the webs, kill a sleeping demon as there are a few, try to figure out what to do with the demons who are rolling around like fools, or just plain get the heck out of there! Plus, I'm sure there are a plethora of other options too. Just letting you know what the scene is. One running, one trying to get the rest of the way out from the web, one still asleep, one dead, and two rolling around on the dock. Next round! :D

Colin lashed out again at the demon, his knife a blur. He realized too late his mistake, a simple application of too much force and knowing it would never reach its intended target. Colin, you are able to pick up the shotgun as you tumble to it, in the meantime the Native woman has drawn out a pistol and she shoots the still fleeing demon in the back between the shoulder blades. He pitches forward, falling from the dock into the water below with a splash, though you have no way of knowing if he is dead or not. Still, the other demon is beginning to free itself from the web. Look, I appreciate chivalry as much as the next woman, but you are going to get yourself killed if you don't hurry! There's more on the way and I cannot stay here! Lily looks relieved that Colin has taken her advice. She quickly makes sure you are all in the wagon and then starts driving the horses as fast as they will go. You look behind you to see the demon in the web break free. By the time he does though you are out of his reach. She seems to be an excellent driver, for she guides the horses expertly around sharp corners and down narrow alleys. As you head for the main road you see dozens of hunters, all in some kind of combat with demons. It looks like something of a massacre and the Indian woman gasps at the sight of it. I'm afraid we can't help them now. If we are caught their deaths will have been in vain. She says in a thick voice full of emotion and anger. She leads the wagon towards the road, but the theft has not gone unnoticed. Some of the demons see you and they rush for their mounts. This wagon isn't going to outrun them. See if you can slow them down while I try to lose them! She shouts, indicating your firearms. If you need something more than your shotgun you can use my pistol Irishman. She offers.

ooc: At present they don't have any weapons drawn and they are far enough away they can't get you yet, so go ahead and roll 3 rounds worth of attacks. If you have spells, feel free to use them instead, whichever floats your boat.

You both manage to hit the demon at the wagon squarely, and he gasps in pain and looks to be wounded, but he is by no means finished with you yet. Stefan manages to also shoot the demon at point blank, and after he sees Father Simon barely miss the oncoming horsemen, the Doctor mutters a quick incantation and lets loose a fireball at the nearest rider, which hits him firmly, slowing his charge, but not incapacitating him. The demon who has made it aboard gives the nearest person a swift backhand, which happens to be Colin. He is strong. Remarkably strong, and you go flying back into one of the crates with the force of it. Stop the wagon now and I'll make your deaths quick. He grins.

Meanwhile Colin slashes his shoulder successfully and by now the thing is dripping blood everywhere. Stefan unleashes a fireball towards the riders following you and they are starting to fall back for the horses are spooked by the flames and are not cooperating. Simon felt his jaw give. It hung strangely and painfully out of joint. He moaned, blood falling out along with a tooth and a piece of a tooth. His vision blurred with the pain, but he fired anyway.

Colin was still hurting from the blow he had received earlier. It hurt him to move and he was starting to feel sluggish. His knife was no longer a blur, but merely a fast object.

Re: Chapter 2.1- A Precious Cargo

Father Simon gets in two shots quite nicely and the demon by now realizes he is not going to survive much longer. He tries to strike Colin but misses, and likewise Colin misses him as well, but not by too much. The demon is bleeding profusely and he takes a leap from the wagon, tumbling hard on the ground behind you. None of you are doing very well, though Lily seems to be fairly well. Is everyone alright? She demands as she urges the horses even faster. We need to get rid of these crates so just hold on until we get there! I'll try to go as fast as I can!

ooc: You also get an attack of opportunity against the demon if you want to give one final shot at him on his way out.

Simon tries to put his jaw back in the hinge to try and dull some of the pain.

Re: Chapter 2.1- A Precious Cargo

Lily drives like a madwoman and Stefan manages to help with wounds during the sojourn. Fortunately between the doctor and Father Simon's own expertise you are able to put things back where they belong so to speak. It doesn't take long before Lily reaches headquarters and she pulls the wagon into the alley way where there is a side entrance to building. Help me unload this quickly! We need to get this wagon out of here so no one can track it to us! She instructs, already unlocking the door. In the meantime Frederick has spotted you from the front of the building and quickly comes to help. Colin, he is one of the only people you really have met officially here so it is nice to see a familiar face. What happened?! Is everyone alright? He demands, looking worried even as he helps to unload.

Simon's mouth is still swollen, making talking awkward. He does as Lilly asked, though, unloading the wagon as fast as possible. He tried to say something. "De-monhs" but his jaw was not cooperating and he decided to just work while he still felt like it.

Re: Chapter 2.1- A Precious Cargo

ooc: Lol! Why is that so funny to me?

Lily gives a hasty nod at Father Simon's mispronounced explanation. It was something of a bloodbath. She says quietly. But we got what we came for. We need to get the wagon out of here quickly though. Frederick, do you suppose you could get rid of it, somewhere they won't find it and away from here? I'm a bit exhausted. She admits unhappily. The red haired man nods and moves fast to do as she requests. She leads you all inside, looking upset and limping a bit. Well that could have gone worse I suppose. She sighs. We'll know by the end of the night how many casualties there are. She turns to Colin. You must be Colin. Victoria told me about you. Thank you for your help. She gives a quick introduction to Father Simon and Stefan.I don't want to leave these crates unguarded. I have heard rumors of a possible spy in our midst. I don't want them getting their hands on this. Will you be able to find your way to Victoria without me?

Simon waves at Lilly. He points to himself then to the crates. "I Shtahy," then he motions for Lilly to lead the young fellow.

Re: Chapter 2.1- A Precious Cargo

The Indian woman smiles, looking suddenly marvelously beautiful as she does so. Normally her expression is hard, her brow furrowed and her dark eyes sharp and calculating. When she offers a rare smile though everything softens and she is suddenly lovely. Are you sure Father? You've taken quite a beating and I think you should see a healer. She points out in concern.

ooc: I'm just waiting on Colin to progress. If he doesn't post in the next day or so I'll move along. Meanwhile to save time you may both want to make listen checks so that I'll have them ready when I move on.

Colin sneered back at the road left behind them. He clutched at his likely cracked ribs, hopefully only bruised. He looked down, the trickle of blood from his wounds staining his hands. He spat in the street and regarded the Indian woman. His Irish accent resumed its normal place and he grinned. He limped into the building and leaned against a wall. "Hell of a scrap. I think me ribs are bruised."

Simon hissed as Colin swore and shook his head. He pointed up, indicating Colin needed to ask forgiveness. A good Irish boy should know better.
