Yep, I loved the pun. :) I originally suggested it for a friend's character, a tiefling (demon-tainted race) in D&D. After she was done with it, I re-used it for Penny. I think a children's book may also have named a character Penny Dreadful, but it's hard to Google now with the popularity of the TV series.
I originally had Penny be a collector of penny dreadfuls, like an 1800s comic book fan of Varney the Vampire and the rest. It didn't come up much in play, unlike her spoon-collecting and cross-stitching hobbies.
By the way, "Penny Dreadful" is a nom de guerre, my idea being that European hunters adopt pseudonyms (because some vampires are in the nobility). No, she has the perfectly ordinary and not at all ominous real name of Penelope Darkmoor. ;)
