Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

The bar isn't quite as nice as the one you left but it is tidy and well kept, if a bit small. New York is a great deal more expensive than Nebraska it seems. Still, it made up for it in sheer number of customers. People in this city liked to drink apparently and tonight seemed even more crowded than usual.

Your mother mans the counter, pouring whiskey for grizzled men who are forgetting their problems in the bottom of a glass. A few of them flirt with her, she is a well preserved woman, but she evades them with the expertise of one used to the attentions of men. You've received many an offer yourself but so far nothing too aggressive. As you set down a pitcher of beer at a table you notice a man enter the bar and start to head towards the counter. He is a middle aged man, rough looking and worn. He stops suddenly when he sees your mother, paling as though he's seen a ghost. What's more is she looks right at him and to your surprise nearly drops the bottle she'd been holding. You've never seen your mother so rattled. They stare at each other a long moment, eyes locked. At last she calls to you. Jo? Please take over for me. Her eyes never leave the stranger's.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

"Sure thing mama..." Jo said aloud at her mother's words, wrinkling her brow at the request. As she finished setting down her pitches, she slid smoothly towards her mother's location, surprised to see her so thrown off.

Despite her own familiarity behind the counter, she was a bit distracted by her mother's own worry at the man's appearance. He must have been someone important. Still, she knew mama needed some help, so she did her best to work into the rotation without messing things up, as that wouldn't do anybody any good.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

You watch as your mother leaves the counter and leads the stranger into the back room. She looks visibly upset and the stranger only slightly less so, which you find confusing and concerning. As you man the counter, Billy approaches, his dark eyes flicking back to the retreating couple with a look of mischievousness. You've only known him a month or so but when your mother hired the man to help at the bar it was clear he was an entertaining fellow to say the least. Immensely likeable, jovial, friendly and not bad on the eyes either. He puts down an empty pitcher in front of you to be filled and nods at the back room entrance. Well that looked intense. Do you want to go listen at the door or shall I? his dark eyes gleam with curiosity and you wonder if he's joking or not. Who is he?

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Grabbing the pitcher from Billy, Jo rolled her eyes,

"Mama knows what she's doin', you stop bein' so troublesome!" she softly laughed as she filled the pitcher for him, topping it off with a good amount of foam. It was obvious from her vocal pitch that she didn't have as much faith as she was trying to portray, but hopefully by now, Billy knew better than to question her faith in her mom.

After another second, she bit her lower lip,

"I'm not sure who he is, but I've never seen Mama like that. She asked us to watch out here, so that's what we'll do, right Billy?" she asked, sending him an unspoken message. She would love if Billy would listen in and gather some information for them both, but she wasn't able to say it, and he knew it. The look she was giving him, however, said all he'd need to hear. She could cover for him, after all, for a few minutes...

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Billy looks surprised by your hint for a moment and then breaks into a huge grin. Oh that's what we'll do alright Miss Jo he winks. He takes the pitcher again. Now if you'll excuse me, I think I have some thirsty customers near the back... with that he strides off nonchalantly towards the back room. From your angle it is difficult to see him well, not to mention customers are starting to overrun things a bit. Soon you are so busy covering for two other people that you almost forget about Billy and your mother. Several minutes later though the man finally returns, almost rushing back to the counter, his face a bit stressed. A moment later you realize why for the pair emerge from the back room a second later. The middle aged man gives her a nod goodbye and leaves the bar without ordering. Both Billy and your mother look shaken though Elizabeth's face quickly hardens when she sees how busy it is. Looks like it is back to business as usual for her. Thanks Jo she gives you a tight smile as she takes her place behind the counter again, waving you off to man the tables with Billy.

As you start clearing a table Billy approaches you, eyes shifting back to Elizabeth warily. He looks surprisingly grim, an unnatural expression for the usually cheerful man. I-I'm sorry Jo, that turned out differently than I expected. I thought he was just an old lover or something he shakes his head. But it's something else. I couldn't make out everything they said and some of it doesn't make sense but they were talking about your father and who killed him. From the sounds of it that man knows what happened and who did it though I didn't catch who it was. His name is Michael Hudson and he's staying at the hotel a couple blocks over if you decide you want to ask him about it yourself. Sounds like your mom plans to meet up with him again tomorrow. I didn't mean to be eavesdropping on something so personal Jo, I hope you can forgive me.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Seeing her mother's expression, Jo was shaken slightly, but she stood her ground and smiled at her mother's thanks.

As she was sent off to work with Billy again, Jo shook her head and placed a soft hand on Billy's shoulder/neck area, and spoke softly,

"It was not your fault, Billy, maybe neither of us should have poked our noses where they didn't belong. I appreciate you helping, and being honest with me. I will take care of things, and Mama will be fine. She's strong. Now let's focus on work, while its here, and make the best of it." she said, smiling at him and letting her hand droop away from his neck as she turned back to work.

At her first opportunity, Jo already had her mind set. She was going to get some answers from a Mr. Hudson, whether he was willing to share them or not!

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Billy blushes a bit at your touch and looks relieved that you are so understanding about it. Thanks Jo, you're pretty swell you know he smiles and with that he turns to his own work though you can tell you affected him.

The night passes quickly, being busy helps keep your mind somewhat focused on what you are doing at least. Your mother tends bar as if nothing strange happened and you can't help but wonder how she can be so calm after hearing the news she apparently did. Just one more thing to ask this Michael Hudson. By the time the bar closes it is late, or early depending on your view. A little after two in the morning actually. This Hudson fellow is probably asleep but since Billy said your mother was going to see him the next day your window of opportunity is narrow. Finding out about your father's apparent murder is perhaps more important than sleep. After cleaning up your mother starts up the stairs to the apartment above the bar. It's small but for the two of you there is more than enough space.

You comin sweetie? she calls from a few steps up. Before you can answer Billy does for you. Uh-actually Mrs. Hartley, I was hoping to bend your daughter's ear about a few things if that's alright? he looks at you nervously and after a moment of confusion Elizabeth starts to smile. Ah...I see...well that's fine by me if it is by Jo. I'll be headed to bed but wake me if you need to talk about anything honey she smiles at you before disappearing up the stairs. Once she's gone Billy turns to you and pulls you by the arm towards the door, his nervous demeanor completely gone, an act it would seem. I think that bought you some time now hurry! he hisses, still looking back at the stairs suspiciously. She thinks I mean to woo you and she'll expect that to take a bit so you have at least oh...forty minutes I'd say before she gets supicious. I bet you money she's not going to sleep, she'll stay up and wait for you to gossip about me. When she comes back down I'll tell her you slapped my face and stormed out or somethin, get her off your back a little while longer. Now, hurry to this Hudson fellow, wake him up and question the daylights out of him as fast as you can!

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

After a split second of being surprised by Billy's actions, Jo smiled, a genuine happiness creeping over her face, before a coy look appeared as she slapped his cheek, ever so softly, leaving her hand there a split second before pulling it away,

"And who says I didn't slap you, Billy?" she laughed softly, turning, excited by the opportunity, and she threw her thin coat on real quick before heading out the door, not wanting to waste a single second.

Traveling down the road, Jo was intensely focused on getting to Michael Hudson's hotel, to ask him some questions. Jo wasn't ready to wait around, and miss her chance, not when Mama was involved.

...plus her curiosity was getting the best of her. Deep down, Josephine knew that, on some levels, she was just itchin' for some adventure, and nobody would ever let her have any! It tickled the back of her mind, just how easily and quickly Billy swapped from 'nervous and humble' to 'commanding and decided', but she didn't pay it much mind. After all, what was the worst that could happen?

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Normally this time of night you would be loathe to go out by yourself. Elizabeth wasn't able to afford to buy the bar in the best side of town and though this is by no means the slums it is not exactly ritzy either. Fortunately at two blocks away the hotel is quickly arrived at though the person at the desk is half asleep when you enter. It is a middle aged man and he looks grumpy at the possibility of a customer at this hour.

Somethin I can help you with miss? If yer looking for a room we're full up. Unless you are here to see a tenant...his suddenly lecherous smile implies some rather scandalous things. If yer the business type I might just be interested in acquiring yer services myself. The grin widens.

ooc: Be sure to roll diplomacy/bluff as needed ;)

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Walking through the streets, to reach her destination, Josephine kept her jacket pulled tightly around herself, to keep a low profile, and keep unwanted attention off of herself. Although she often knew how to draw such attention in the bar, she didn't exactly want to out here.

When she arrived, however, and saw the man's lecherous smile, she knew exactly how to deal with him, and she smiled pleasantly in return, allowing the man's mind to assume what it wanted,

"I am here to visit somebody, actually. An old friend, goes by the name of Michael Hudson." she finished, smiling and glancing towards his paperwork expectantly. "Its a bit of a surprise, my showing up here... its been a long time. I'm sure you understand?" she asked, wanting the man to give her the room number, and not a horribly pick-up line.

Still, she spent time with him, if necessary, as she didn't want word getting around that she'd been here either. She knew better than drawing the wrong kinds of public attention.

09:34, Today: Josephine Hartley rolled 5 using 1d20. roll + I dunno.

Not sure how to add modifiers, unless its just 1d20 + skill or whatever (do we add relevant attributes too?). I rolled a 5, haha.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

The man seems to believe your story easily and after a moment's hesitation grudgingly nods. Alright, I'll tell ya, provided you stop by here on your way out he grins. Should you agree he informs you that the room number is 23 and points you in the right direction, one floor up. Luckily avoiding the man should be easy as there is another exit on the upper level.

Soon you find yourself at room 23. As you step towards the door you can't even begin to think of knocking before the floorboard gives a creak. Instantly the door opens and you see the stranger on the other side looking ferocious, a large dagger in his hand. Who's there, what do you want? he demands accusingly. Apparently he is on the paranoid side, though what he fears you do not know. Seeing a woman he softens only slightly but after a moment appears to recognize you. I saw you at Elizabeth's place...he frowns. Did you follow me? What do you want?!

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Smiling warmly at Mr. Hudson, Josephine slowly moved closer to him, her hands up, palms towards him,

"Please, Mr Hudson, I came only to talk. No reason to be rude now, is there?" she asked, raising an eyebrow. She knew her skills were mostly oriented around her silver tongue, and she tried to use every talent she had. The man had answers she needed, after all.

If he allows her to close the distance, she will try to move the conversation into his room, so they may speak in private.

I'll wait here, in case you'd like me to roleplay this out, however, since we're approaching a potentially "monologue" moment, where Jo simply keeps pressing him for info, I'd like to point out, I don't mind if you assume what she's doing in this situation, so that I can most efficiently get my information out of Mr. Hudson :P

If you'd like me roleplay each step, however, I will be glad to

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

ooc: I appreciate the go ahead! Some players hate to have things assumed for them so I'm glad to hear you are so flexible. Alright, the monologue shall commence!

He hesitates and lets you enter though he watches your every move like a hawk. Upon hearing you are Elizabeth's daughter (assuming you tell him such) he relaxes greatly. If questioned about your father he hesitates, looking irritated that he was being eavesdropped on. That's really your mother's right, not mine. She'll have my head if I tell you. he frowns. After passionate insistence on your part though he finally gives in. Alright alright, you should know what really happened I guess. Look, I've known your family for years. Grew up with your father, even introduced him to Elizabeth. I imagine you don't remember me but I was around when you were little. Kept away since then for your own good. Elizabeth wanted to keep you safe see, and one hunter in the family was enough. Well, I guess I should explain. he sighs then. Look, you've heard stories about folktales of vampires and demons and all the other nasties used to scare children into behaving right? Well you'll probably think I'm crazy but you may as well know they are real. They just keep well hid until it's too late for you. Well, the world is full of hunters like me and your father who actually go and do something about it. That's how he was killed. Now, go ahead and have a fit if you want. Laugh at me, call me crazy, I've heard it all before but you deserve to hear the truth, even if you don't believe it. He waits for your reaction though to your surprise his face is very calm and serious. He seems to mean every word he said.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

:) I joined your game because you're well written, friendly, nice, and from what I can tell, a solid GM. I wouldn't join the game of somebody I didn't trust to tell a good story, and it'd be silly for me to demand hand-holding at every point of a good story! You can ALWAYS assume anything for Jo that makes sense, as long as you're in pursuit of telling a good tale. This is your story, I'm just a character in it. I can't say I appreciate the work you put in for me to enjoy myself if then I don't trust you to do anything on your own :)

Nodding her head at his tales, Josephine's head stopped nodding when he discussed demons and vampires. Her expression was locked professionally into one she often used at work, but she couldn't really fully digest what he was saying.

Reading his face, however, she knew he wasn't deceiving her. He was either insane, or telling the truth. Considering her mother's reaction to him, she decided that, as difficult as it was, she would believe him, based on her mother.

"Alright, its difficult to believe, but my Mother knows you, and I believe you." she said, visibly forcing herself to accept what she'd heard, "Now fill my in as much as you can. I am not going to let my family suffer and have nothing to do with it." she said stoically, setting the floor for him to inform her of everything.

During the conversation at some point, if possible, Jo would ask about these 'hunter' types, and how she can become one.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

ooc: Well thank you so much! I really appreciate everything you just said! I guess I'm just paranoid because once when I tried to skim through things I had a player freak out and it caused a giant mess so I tend to err on the side of caution now. I'm really grateful for your trust and easygoingness! I know that's not a word but it should be ;P

He looks surprised at your acceptance but quickly recovers and starts to delve deeper into his tale. Apparently your father was introduced into the world of hunting (as he calls it) by a run in with a werewolf back when he was a teenager. He barely managed to escape with his life and after tracking down a silver bullet he was able to kill the thing. From there he delved into the world of the supernatural, running across Michael Hudson at the age of twenty where they met clearing a vampire nest. Inseparable after that they hunted together for years until your father met Elizabeth and started a family. He still helped me on occasion after that but your ma was having none of it, saying it was too dangerous and she needed her child's father alive to raise his girl. Can't really blame her for that can ya? Well you know Elizabeth, she tends to get her way. I will admit your father and I had a falling out over it and it was some time before we saw each other again. I heard that he still wanted to help though so they made their bar into a safe haven for hunters. They would offer hot meals, first aid and information to any hunters in the area with a need. Kept it all secret from you of course for your own good but they found their way to help how they could. As you got older your father started getting more involved, like he used to but only on occasion. He and I made our amends secretly, didn't want your mother to get involved again. Guess I was still mad at her for taking my friend away. Now though, I wish I'd never let the fool come back his voice shakes. He would say he was out helping a friend or going to get supplies for the bar, you probably remember his excuses. But he would be away with me on a hunt, usually something not too far away and I always tried to keep the threat low, he was rusty after all. Well, recently we were hunting a ghoul, simple stuff for us, when we ran into a demon. Turns out the demon wanted the ghoul! Why I still don't know, almost seemed like it was capturing the wretch. Now we have heard plenty of tales of demons, some of the hunters we've run across have dealt with them and usually not well. But this was out of our experience, we didn't have any way of fighting the thing and though we tried to run...his face crumples at the memory and it takes a long moment to regain his composure. I couldn't face your ma. I barely managed to escape and I tipped off some other hunters about your dad so they could bring him back to Elizabeth. She didn't know until tonight about my involvement. Needless to say she's not happy with me though we're meeting in the morning to talk about what more I've found out. I've been trying to track that demon ever since he escaped and I finally have some headway. When he hears about your interest in becoming a hunter he slams his hand down on the table, startling you. Absolutely not! he barks. I already got your father killed and now you want to follow in his footsteps?! Do you want to deprive your mother of all her kin?! Look, you deserved to know the truth but I never dreamed you would be fool enough to try to do something about it! Besides, your a woman, what do you think you would be able to do anyway?

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Absolutely! And I think its a word :P

Listening intently, Josephine did her best to apply everything to her memory. When he spoke about her father, Josephine swallowed, doing her best to keep her emotions hidden, and not succeeding entirely at it. When Mr Hudson raised his voice, however, Josephine knew exactly how her father would react in this situation, and she assumed Michael would act the same way... so she played him like she would have manipulated her father for something she really wanted,

"Fine. You can have your opinions about me. I'll do it on my own then." she said, backing up her words by turning, and heading towards the door, "I'm sure nothing will happen to me, teaching myself while hunting these things solo." she said, her voice trailing off at the end, as she approached the door to leave.

He makes a strangled noise of protest and moves to block the door. Are you crazy woman?! he gasps. Do you even know what I just told you? Demons! What in the world do you think you can do against those? Your father and I have dealt with this rubbish for years and we didn't even stand a chance! Be smart and honor what he would have wanted, what your mother wants. Get married, have children, live a long and normal life. Please, I beg you! he looks desperate, you've clearly shaken him with your intentions and he's near a panic which of course means you have him where you want him. Suddenly there is a loud pounding on the door and to your horror you hear your mother's voice! Let me in Michael, I know she's here! she snarls. The man goes white as a sheet and it's almost tempting to laugh, your mother always could put the fear of god in people. He shakily opens the door and she bursts in looking livid. Thought you'd sneak out and find answers did you? How much has he told you? she demands. Do you have any idea of how dangerous it is this late?!

Her expression whitened itself slightly, when her mother's voice came through the door. She'd had him right where she'd wanted him too...

"Ma...Mama, no...nothing!" she stammered, somewhat thrown off by her own mother's presence. Normally she would've tried to sweeten the situation, but her mom often saw right through it.

After a second, she recovered, and placed both hands on her hips, a clear sign she was no longer backing down,

"I should know this stuff, Mama, this is Daddy we're talkin' about! You can't hide this from me forever!" pausing, Josephine's attitude suddenly shifted,

"Wait... how did you know I left?" her mind shot back to Billy, the little backstabber.

Elizabeth rolls her eyes. Billy held out as long as he could but I'm not an idiot Jo, when you didn't come up I went down to see why. Don't worry about him, he's in almost as much trouble as you are! she snaps. Then she rounds on Michael. You TOLD her?! she slams her hand on the table and he jumps involuntarily. That's just what I need, you getting another member of my family killed! He holds his hands up in protest. I've been trying to convince her NOT to be a hunter Liz! I'm just as upset about it as you are but I thought she had a right to know the truth of what's out there. I never dreamed she would want to hunt herself! Elizabeth's eyes narrow in fury. What?! You put the idea of hunting in her brain?! He claps his hands over his mouth and turns several shades paler. She turns back to you then. Get it out of your head Jo, right now. I know you're mad, hell I've been in a fury about it myself but trying to get revenge will only get you killed you get that? I...forbid...it. she says each word with extra articulation. Hearing her mother's words, Jo was terrified that she was going to receive a thrashing, but when her mother inadvertently confirmed Michael's words, her eyebrows rose, and she stamped her foot,

"You can't forbid it, Mama, you can't!" her tone was a combination of the pleading that she knew would have worked on Father, and a more confidence-filled one that she knew would appeal to her mom, "This is my family too, and Daddy was important to both of us! How can you ask me to avoid this, and act like it didn't happen?" she asked, carefully laying the guilt trap in there so her mom couldn't fire back.

Elizabeth sighs in frustration but she does see the passion in your face and knows you have a point. No, I suppose you can't just forget it can you. If you want to help you can help the hunters like I do. You don't know this sweetie but many of our patrons are hunters and our bar has always been a  meeting place for them to regroup, exchange information and sometimes just take a load off. Now that you're in on it I suppose I can give you more responsibilities on that front. But you are a support only understand? You are not a hunter and you never will be. You can be a kind face for the poor boys out there. That is how you will help.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

She knew she had her Mama, right where she wanted her, and she pressed the advantage,

"Oh yes, and I'll watch the good ones walk to their own deaths, and the new ones die of inexperience, all because I'm afraid to do what Daddy did." she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm to lay the guilt on thick,

"So if I grow close to some, do I just watch them die? Let them make the bad decisions, while I'm perfectly capable?" now came the big pitch,

Approaching her mom, she threw her hands into hers, knowing her and dad were always weak to this,

"Trust me, Mama, like you always have. Teach me, and let ME decide! I know the risks, I know the danger, and I don't promise I'll choose the safest path, but you've raised me well enough to choose the best path. Have faith in me, like I've always shown I'm worth, and support me in whatever I choose." she said, her voice and face a combination of begging, and convincing.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

You expect me to support suicide? Your father was a hunter for decades and he still got himself killed. What do you think you're capable of girl? Just because you can throw a punch and use a gun you think you're ready? There are things out there that would turn your blood to ice, you have no idea what you are getting yourself into and your stubbornness isn't going to be enough no matter what you think you are capable of! she snaps. She starts to go on but Michael steps forward then, his hands up as though he's tempted to separate you.

Now hold up Elizabeth, I just had a thought. She rounds on him as though furious he is interrupting but allows him to finish. There's a man I know, Ian Shaw. Best hunter I've ever heard of. He faces demons practically every day and he has some way of dealin with them. Won't tell me much but I know he has methods the rest of us don't. Maybe he can help. He's always talking about some higher ups he's working for, won't tell me much more than that but I'd bet I can get him to talk to ya, see if he can offer a way for Josephine to help without endangering herself. he offers hopefully. Elizabeth shakes her head though to your dismay and she turns to you, her voice softer. Look honey, I know you want to help. I know you want to get justice for your father but it's too risky. It's not worth your own life. He's dead and nothing you do will bring him back. Do you think he would want you to throw your life away? Think about what he would want. If anything happened to you I would be completely alone. Would you really want to do that to your own mother? It would seem she is the one laying on the guilt now. It is clear that no matter your methods she is unmovable tonight. Eventually she says it's time to leave and Michael nods soberly, disappointed that she didn't accept his offer. She turns to the hunter. I appreciate what you told me but I hope you understand I don't ever want to see your face again. Especially around Josephine. She turns and waits for you by the door. Shaken, the man offers a handshake to you. Well, nice to meet you Miss Hartley. I'm sorry for my involvement in things As you take his hand he slips you a piece of paper to your surprise. Should you read it later you find it is an address and the simple instruction to 'ask for Ian.'

ooc; Go ahead and respond to your mom if you like. I just thought I'd start to wrap up things here. She's not likely to budge yet so arguing back and forth could take a while so feel free to skim. Also, let me know your plans for that night and the next day. Keep in mind it's quite late, around 2:30 or so.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

"Mama, I'd never want to leave you, or endanger anybody, but if nobody teaches me about these things, I'm just a victim waitin' to happen. They're still out there, and whether I believe in them or not, I'd guess they believe in me!"

Despite that, she realized her mother wasn't going to be moved, so she simply sighed, shook her head and wished the man a good day. When he slipped her a piece of paper, she was glad, as that simply saved her the trouble of hunting him down for the address anyways.

That night, Jo went home with her mother, continuing to try and explain her point of view, despite knowing it was just as unlikely for her to succeed as it was for her mother to. Instead, she made sure Mama knew she loved her, and she always wanted what was best for both of them.

Before she went to bed, she copied the address twice, hiding it around the room, just in case her mother was suspicious and came in to take it away. She was 100% sure she wouldn't lose her one shot to get back at whatever killed her father, and prevent it from hurtin' her or her Mama.

The next day, waking up, Jo got dressed in one of her better outfits for athletics. More form fitting, and a bit less free flowing, something that she could easily pass off as "for work" if given questions. With that, assuming she didn't have to work today, she spent the early morning (8ish) eating breakfast, and heading out, immediately set on pursuing this goal. Jo was a driven woman, and she wasn't about to let this opportunity pass her by.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

You find a note under your door that night. An apology from Billy. Apparently your mother bullied him into spilling his secrets and he's pretty ashamed of it. You won't see him until that afternoon though so no sense worrying about it now.

The next morning Elizabeth watches you leave suspiciously. She opens her mouth to say something, hesitates, and then opens it again. Look darlin, I know you're mad at me but we'll figure a way for you to help alright? We just have to find a way for you to do it safely. We'll talk about it when we've both calmed down a bit. In the meantime I'd better not see you houndin Michael again you understand? So, she thinks you are out to badger the hunter again. Assuming you quell her fears on that score you are soon out the door and for the moment free.

The address is a twenty minute walk or so though this means little to your young legs. Your mother's bar is not exactly in the bad part of town but your current destination very much is. It is a good thing it is so early and the un-savories are sleeping off their drink. Instead you are met with the sight of hungry children who eye you as a likely pocket to pick. The occasional beggar implores for a handout and proud eyed flower girls eye you curiously. At last you find the address, a tiny apartment in a ramshackle building. #13 on the second floor. You walk up the rickety stairs and gingerly knock on the door. At first there is no answer but you aren't about to turn back now. As you knock with increasing volume at last the door is flung open to reveal a man of about thirty, dark of hair and in need of a shave. You obviously woke him and he is quite out of it. Looking at his rumpled clothes he appears to have slept in them and there is a faint smell of drink on the man. In spite of all this you are taken back by his good looks and sharp eyes that seem to see every detail about you even though he has barely opened them. As he speaks you hear a Scottish accent. Ah blast, don't tell me another one has found out where I live? he curses. Look, I'm not really looking for anythin serious right now....hm. I seem to have misplaced your name lass. And don't get me wrong but your face isn't ringin any bells either. Was I particularly drunk when we met? If so I should hardly be held responsible for any declarations I may have made.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Nodding her head, Jo made her mother a promise,

"Unless Michael hunts me down for some reason, I'll never seek him out again, and if I do, you'll be the first to know Mama, promise." she said, smiling to set her mother's fears to rest.

Once she'd stuck around long enough to make it seem genuine, she left and headed out.

Finding the second floor of the building, Josephine was startled to see the man's disheveled appearance. She had been expecting... something different. Still, Michael had told her this is where her answers lie, and so she wasn't taking no for an answer.

Pushing the good looking man back into his apartment, Jo wasn't taking no for an answer as she shut the door behind herself,

"Look, I was told that you were who I needed to speak to, if you're Ian." she said, an expectant look on her face.

He looks surprised by your forcefulness but allows himself to be physically moved, almost with a sense of dread. Upon hearing your words though he blinks. Yes, I'm Ian. he looks relieved. So you don't know me? We never...? he trails off and then realizing you genuinely don't know each other quickly changes the subject. It would seem the man must bed many women if he loses track of them so! Who told you about me? And while we're at it, who the bloody he-uh, I mean who are you? He starts to pick up his room a bit which is strewn with dirty dishes and dirty clothes. Sorry bout the mess. As I mentioned, I'm not in the habit of bringing women here.

Rolling her eyes at Ian's words about 'not bringing women here', Josephine kicked a piece of clothing aside with her feet in a subtle strike out at the filthiness of the place, and she placed her hands on her hips, setting herself in a position to learn,

"Look, I don't care much what you do in your spare time, Ian, nor do I mind. I'm here to learn how not to get myself killed while learnin' to be a hunter like my Daddy was." she said flatly, being straight out about things. No reason to beat around the bush now.

At the question as to who she is, she stared at him and answered directly,

"I'm Josephine Hartley, and I look to do my family proud."

He blinks in surprise at your bluntness but quickly recovers. At mention of your family name he frowns in thought. Hartley, Hartley, Hartley....ah yes. Had a bar in Nebraska right? If I recall there was some bad business there...he suddenly remembers and looks sympathetic. Oh yes, I heard about that demon. That was your father? I am sorry. he sounds sincere. Well I've heard about your mother, I'm betting she would never have sent you on my path. Wouldn't know where to find me anyway, I've never dealt with the woman. She's well favored among hunters though, they say she's wonderful if you keep yourself in line. No, you must have heard from me from someone else....Michael Hudson I'm betting. Now that he has something more to think about than his latest conquest come to seek revenge you can see he has a sharp mind and he paces a bit figuring it all out. Curse that Hudson for giving my address out like that! I told him it was for emergencies only not every young thing that wants to get revenge. I have too many things to do to train you Miss Hartley. Bigger fish to fry as they say. I am sorry for your loss but this is a bad time to be getting into the hunting business. There are big things afoot, huge things that your ever lovin mother would have my head over if I got you involved in them. Besides, you have any idea how many folks get themselves killed trying to do what I do? Even the good ones who've done it for years, like your pa end up dead before long. What makes you think you've got the goods? You may have pluck but I'm willing to bet you haven't got a clue what it's really like out there.

Narrowing her eyes slightly, Josephine, instead of answering his question directly, asked him a different question instead: aiming the conversation the way she wanted it to go,

"What makes you think I'll stop just because you don't help me? I suppose I can just continue to make noise, and hunt these things down without your help, though I wouldn't guess you'd be alright with letting me get myself killed, would you?" she asked, raising an eyebrow in question.

On that note, she continued, "I'd wager, from what I've heard of it, there is never a good time to 'get into the hunting business'. Since there is never a good time, then now is as good as any other time. I'm already involved, Mr. Ian, the question is really whether or not you're going to help me learn to survive on my journey." she said, redefining the question for him, so that her desired outcome would seem like the only possible answer.

To your surprise he laughs and runs a hand through his hair. Well aren't you just a manipulative little thing? Think you'll start stalking dark alleys by yourself eh? Well I suppose we can't be havin that, you should at least be supervised. Heh, alright if that's how you want to play it fine. I'll help you but only because we could use every able bodied soul we can lay our hands on and though I tried to spare you I could use you. My one condition though is that your mother never find out and if she does it can't lead back to me. I've never met the woman but the stories are fearsome enough. he shudders. Once he has your assurance he makes sure the door is securely closed and proceeds to get right down to it to your surprise. He gives you the general background on demons, vampires, ghosts and werewolves, including their weaknesses and how to detect them. Now, you any good with a gun? Or at least a knife? If you want to help you'll have to get pretty hands on as they say. I'd bet I could scrounge up somethin for us to work on tonight if you're interested. Do you think you can get away from the bar? I don't know how you are planning to keep this all secret from your ma considering most hunting we do takes place at night. A lot easier to kill a vampire when there isn't a crowd of people watching.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Her pride flared up a tiny bit at the question about her firearms proficiency, and she nodded,

"Daddy got me good enough to shoot a badger out of his hands while he was wrestlin' with it, so I suppose I can handle myself." she said, proud to recall history with her father.

Still, she agreed to his terms, though in reality she knew she couldn't stop her Momma. She was an insightful woman, and she knew her daughter. Hiding something from her wouldn't go very well...

Thinking about his question, Jo nodded her head,

"I'll slip away tonight. Billy owes me anyways for droppin' the ball the other night. I'll be able to get back here when the sun drops. she said, hoping that would be adequate.

On a player-related note, should I look up "how to hunt demons/werewolves/etc" somewhere random online, or do you have a "for your game specifically" rule-book (house-rules, etc) or something? Jo is a focused little thing, so she'd commit all of this to heart immediately.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

ooc: Nah, it's all pretty standard to the show. If you need any refreshers Supernatural Wiki has everything you would ever need so look up demons/vampires/werewolves on there if you want to brush up. Ian would have told you pretty much all of what you'll find on there so feel free to read them and consider them part of Jo's knowledge at this point. As for physically finding things to hunt you listen for trouble and you go after it just like the boys do. Though in my campaign the Men of Letters play a big part in telling you where to go and what to do. You'll get into that soon enough. If Josephine ever wanted to snoop on her own I would just have you roll a gather information check and you could find the latest gossip on violent and weird deaths in the area and then seek them out. I hope that answers your question! :D

Ian looks impressed at hearing your skills and gives an approving nod. Good to hear. I don't want to have to bring you up from nothin, I don't have that kind of time. Well you run along then and think of what stories you're gonna try to pass by your mother. Keep her away from the though you hear? I am not going to tangle with her. I've had enough angry mothers after me as it is he laughs suddenly. With that he bids you goodbye and you head back to the bar.

When you return your mother looks at you suspiciously but she has chosen to give you the pretense of trust at least. She gives you the usual tasks of readying things for that night and Billy apologizes for ratting you out.

ooc: Go ahead and let me know your plans that day and roll a bluff if you're going to lie directly to your mother. Otherwise let me know how you plan to skip out that night and what you'll tell Billy about it. Then we'll move things right along!

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Rolled a 32 for bluff. Hope that works :)

Helping her mother out around the bar, setting up for the night, Josephine explained that she had to spend some time on her own, as she was feeling bad after the mention of her father the day before. She wanted to be alone, and appreciated the understanding.

With Billy, she of course laid the full guilt of screwing her over, except she did it gently. She liked Billy, and she didn't want him to really feel bad, so she teased him a bit to influence him to cover for her, but she didn't actually tell him what she was doing. Instead, she used her original story about wanting some time to herself for the night, to hopefully rest up and feel better the next day.

With her lies carefully set into place, she made her way off, back towards Ian, fully ready to roll. She was a mixture of terrified and excited, and she was ready to get started.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

ooc: 32 should work nicely! :D

Your mother looks almost guilty for suspecting you and she quickly gives you the night off, as does Billy who feels even worse. Perfect timing to play the guilt card it would seem.

As you head off to Ian's night has fallen. It is not late yet but still in this part of town the minute it gets dark things get more dangerous. By the time you get to his apartment you are grateful you haven't run into any trouble. The walk home may be a different story.

He answers the door looking much better groomed than before. He is more of a night person it would seem and he lets you in with a smile. Alright, first task of the night, I have a house that needs investigating. This is pretty small potatoes to most hunters mind you but you probably won't like this. There's rumors of a spirit seen in an abandoned firehouse about six blocks down. Good time to investigate I should think. He hands you a sawed off shotgun and several rounds. Rock salt in the bullets he explains. Remember what I told you about ghosts right? Well it won't kill them but it will at least keep them at bay while we figure things out. If we are going to burn the bones we have to first figure out whose bones we need to find eh?

He then locks up and you walk the six blocks across town. To your surprise the unsavory characters and begging children all seem to know the man and either wave, greet him or at least nod. He is liked around these parts it would seem and he goes on to explain he's helped a lot of folk with their more unusual troubles. I used to be a copper too, so a lot of them know me from my beat. Still have connections there, comes in handy I can tell ya that. he grins. Soon you find yourselves at a three story brick building that has seen better days. Several bricks are missing, windows are broken and as you enter dust litters the place. Ian lights two lanterns and hands you one. Alright, this could take a while so I hope you're not expected anywhere. I suppose for now we'd best keep you near me until you get used to things. Ghosts are a lot more malevolent than people realize. During all this you get an intense feeling of being watched and the hair on the back of your neck stands up. This is already very unpleasant though part of you is excited.

Josephine stays as close to Ian as she can when he tells her to, knowing that while she was a bit feisty, spectres wouldn't care, and she would end up dead right quick if she didn't pay attention.

Wielding the shotgun heavily in her small hands, Jo kept her eyes and ears peeled, ready to blast the first ghost she saw, if she saw one.

"I feel like I'm bein' watched..." she whispered to him, wondering if that was a sign of a nearby presence.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Oh you most definitely are he says darkly. You are already impressed by how calmly he handles himself. This is a man who has seen action. You explore the place with him and you note the disarray everything is in. There are signs of squatters having been there at one time but the dust indicates this was some time ago. Perhaps the ghost ran them off, or worse. I did some research on the place. It was a firehouse as I've mentioned but they saw the occasional burn victim here as well when they needed some place for the doctor to tend them. It was before the hospital was finished supposedly. They've had a few folks die here so I'm thinking this could be one of them. Won't really know until we see the bugger. He circles the room as he talks, his own shotgun at the ready. Suddenly from the corner of your eye you see movement. You turn in time to see a pale man dressed in clothes some twenty years out of fashion or so. He is large, imposing and has a bushy gray beard and thick black brows. He simply stands in the corner facing you with a menacing expression. Before you can shoot though he blinks away, suddenly gone. An instant later you hear a scraping sound and you turn to see an old oil painting remove itself from the wall and go hurling towards your head! You barely duck in time and Ian swears. Feisty fellow he growls. Suddenly the ghost reappears across the room, his mouth open in a voiceless scream of rage...

21 attack roll, and thank you :)

Nodding her head at Ian's words, Josephine recognized the potential for a ghost-story, as hilarious as that may have sounded to her a full day previous. When the ghost revealed itself, she still had difficulty swallowing the idea, but she decided not to hesitate, and instead use the reality of rock-salt firearms to 'prove' it to herself.

With that, she pulled the trigger in the direction of the 'ghost', and half-hoped it would hit, half-hoped it wouldn't. She wasn't entirely sure how she would react when she saw definitive proof that ghosts existed, and not only that, but were malevolent!

The rock salt shell hits and to your surprise the ghost dissipates in a violent momentary mist. Nice shot. You may be better at this than I thought. Ian nods approvingly. He then takes out a small notebook and pencil. In cases like these I like to write down a description as soon as I can while it's still fresh in my mind. We're probably going to have to do a bit of canvassing to figure out who the fellow was and an accurate description is helpful. he explains. He didn't have any signs of burns on him right? He may not have been a burn victim then, though it's not always so cut and dry. What we really need is a name. If we have a name we can find his grave and burn his bones, simple as that...well usually. If he was overly attached to something it could be that his soul is tethered to that rather than his remains. Let's hope he wasn't overly sentimental about anything. he sighs. Now, let's get searching quickly. How soon he returns depends on how strong and how angry he is. I'd say split up but you're too green yet so let's move fast shall we? he pauses suddenly and looks at you searchingly. Oh, are you alright by the way? I suppose seeing a ghost for the first time could spook a lot of people, no pun intended.

10 on search. You can roll these for me too, if you'd like. Like I said before, I don't mind you rolling/advancing in the interest of a cool plot/storyline :) I trust you

Josephine's eyes were a bit blank as Ian was speaking until he re-addressed her. Shaking herself free, she nodded her head,

"Yea, I guess, I just..." she swallowed, "Yea, let's move." she said, her confidence back at least on the surface. She couldn't help wondering if her father ended up like this, and it was troubling her, but now was not the time or the place, or even the person to ask.

Hopefully, she called out slightly louder than a speaking voice,

"Excuse me, sir? What's your name?" she asked, turning towards Ian and shrugging as if to say 'who knows?'. If she received no response, she went with Ian, searching around the building.

He gives a little chuckle. Not easy your first time seeing something like this eh? I suppose part of you hoped it was all nonsense. It would be more pleasant than the truth. As you call out the name he shakes his head. Unfortunately they aren't usually the chatty type though on occasion you'll get lucky. Most of the time they are trying to kill you though he sighs sounding tired. Well let's get to it. You search the building with varying degrees of luck. For the most part you run across ledgers, old equipment and a few personal affects. Ian does manage to find a staff roster and tucks it under his arm. We'll take a look at this elsewhere. No sense staying longer than necessary. Feel how it's getting cold? That means our friend isn't too far off he explains. Just as the words are out of his mouth he is suddenly hurled across the room, slamming into a fireplace with surprising force. The apparition is there once more but he's angrier this time. He is standing across the room and he glares at you as suddenly loose bricks from the fireplace come hurling at you...

ooc: Ok, post response and then roll an attack and a reflex save. Normally I'd make the save for you but since you're already going to roll an attack you may as well do both :)

Hearing Ian's question, Jo shook her head,

"Not too pleasant, but..." she stopped as he continued and simply nodded her head. She wasn't here to teach him, she was here to learn, and she knew the downsides of always talkin' and never learnin'. At his final words, however, she raised a question,

"Wait, he can't follow us out of..." just before he was launched across the room, surprising her as she threw her hands up, flustered by the sudden movement. Seeing the apparition glare at her, she tried firing rapidly again at him, and also stepping out of the way of the flying bricks, but her main goal was reaching Ian's side as she rushed forwards. She wanted to make sure he was ok, and on his feet, as a vulnerable target would be defenseless against this onslaught!

Unfortunately your attack misses though only barely, denting the wall next to the specter. Try as you might to avoid the bricks unfortunately one hits you squarely in the back and it HURTS! You'll have bruises for sure and if that thing had hit your head...meanwhile as you rush to Ian's side he is recovering albeit a bit dazed. Hold still! he barks, not wanting to hit you on accident as he scrambles for his shotgun. He fires at the man but he's already disappeared though you doubt very much he is gone as things in the room are still stirring on their own accord. He's stronger than I thought he growls, standing quickly in spite of a gash on his forehead. We need to get out now. You take the lead I'll cover your back. Go! Should you do so he will follow you towards the exit, gun raised. However, as you head towards it you hear an ominous slamming sound. If you're not mistaken it is the front door closing. Keep going don't let it distract you he orders. Indeed as you reach the front door you do find it closed. Before you can try it though the ghost is back and he rushes at you!

ooc: You have enough time to shoot at him if you like so go ahead and roll again. You also take 5 damage.

Seeing the bloody wound, Josephine winces, and touches it gently, wishing she had time to bandage him up, but when he spoke, she nodded, turning and taking off for the front door. Hearing it slam, she wasn't happy, and she spun around, seeing the specter faster than she'd hoped. Lifting the shotgun, she was about to fire at the specter, but she remembered his words, and burst through the door instead, trying to get outside, and not be distracted.

18 rolled on attack

Now I rolled an attack, because initially I was going to spin at the door and fire, but I realized his words might have meant "don't be distracted by the door", so if that's what he meant, then I'll just try to barrel through it instead :)

ooc: No worries it goes well with what I have planned. I'll just use your attack a smidge out of order :)

As you go to obey Ian's commands to get out you struggle against the door but find it supernaturally sealed. It isn't budging. As the ghost lunges for you though you manage to turn in time to point blank shoot him as he's only inches from you. He disperses again but the fact that the door is still sealed indicates he's not far gone. Ian swears. Get over there in the corner quickly! he orders, removing the light pack he brought and opening it quickly. There is a small sack of salt and he quickly forms a barrier around the two of you using the corner of the room to spare much needed salt. I can tell you without looking that he's sealed the windows too. More powerful than I realized he shakes his head. The salt will keep us safe until we figure things out. No use wasting what ammo we have on a useless fight. he takes out the book he found and starts to peruse it. Maybe we'll find something in here, at least put a name to the face that's trying to kill us. Speaking of, when is your ma expecting you back? You may be here a bit longer than I'd hoped.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Swallowing nervously as she slid across the floor to land beside Ian, Josephine's breaths were short, and nervous,

"She... Ma won't expect me back. I've got time..." she said, knowing the guilt she'd laid on those two was perhaps enough to buy her time.

Seeing Ian pull out the book, Josephine gripped the shotgun tightly,

"And what can I do?"

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Help me skim through this. Two sets of eyes are better than one. Look for anything odd. As the two of you skim you discover it is mostly incident reports and the names of those on duty. You are fortunate enough to discover a photo in the back and as you scan it a familiar face catches your eye. It is your specter, standing with a group of men. It would appear he was the fire chief some thirty years before. His name is Geoffry Standish. Well that's something at least Ian mutters, wiping at his still bleeding head. Now that you have a name you have something to look for. You re skim the book and discover an entry quickly scrawled in spidery writing.

March 7, 1869. Standish has been acting out of sorts lately. He has taken to fits of temper and has become very solitary. Jenkins is acting as second until he comes to his senses. Standish just spends all day in his office doing God knows what. He insists on not being disturbed but the men are beginning to talk. We fear he has taken to the bottle for when he returns he is obviously inebriated. I wish he would just resign.

Hm...office eh? That's a thought. It's probably that room on the second floor with the desk we saw. Ian muses. Of course I don't know if there's anything in there that could help us or not. It could be a dead end but I guess it's better than sitting here until we rot. I'll go and see what I can find, you stay here where it's safe. It's going to be dangerous and I can't have you risking yourself now can I? he grins. Naturally part of you balks at being told to sit and wait...He waits to see your response before he goes, perhaps not trusting that you'll take his orders so easily.

"I should go with you!" Josephine insists, standing up and placing her hand on her hip defiantly, "You've already been hit, and if you get hit alone, you need somebody there. Working together, right?" she pressured him, using his own logic against him, "Besides, you wouldn't leave me alone down here, would you? What if something happens that I'm not prepared for?"

ooc: I took the liberty of making a couple of rolls for you to save time. Also there is a drawing for you posted too.

He looks at you and shakes his head with a laugh. Well you do have your mother's stubborness it seems. Alright alright but be quick about it. He'll have regathered himself by now He grabs the half used bag of salt and shoves it in his pack, readying his shotgun. Alright, you lead the way. I'll cover you. It's the room at the end of the second floor remember? This is a long shot mind you but maybe there's something there we can use to distract him, weaken his resolve at least long enough to get out of here. He then motions for you to run.

As you both rush out of the circle Standish immediately appears before you only to be shot in the face by Ian. As you rush up the stairs to your surprise he appears again! Fortunately you are quick to react and manage to get a shot through him before you reach the office. Ian hands you some more shells and quickly reloads himself, so fast it's quite impressive but then you assume he's done this many times. Look for anything Standish might have been attached to. I'm not saying his soul is bound to it but right now it's something to try. He starts to rummage through the desk, indicating you check the shelf in the corner. Now that you have a name to go off it is much easier to look. As you do so Ian takes the bag of salt and makes a barrier around the borders of the room. He runs out partway through but at least now you know what direction the ghost will have to attack from and that's something.

As you search Ian picks up a half drunken bottle of scotch from a drawer and makes a face. Thirty years old. It's either really good or absolutely rancid. he looks halfway tempted to try it but decides against it. As you rummage through the shelves you find a tattered log. It appears to be Standish's and as you skim through it looks fairly typical. Nothing too interesting mostly just details about the firehouse and an occasional mention of his family. Something drops out on the floor though and you pick it up to discover it is a locket with a tiny lock of hair inside...

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Nodding her head, Jo took off towards the second floor, and when her and Ian took turns blasting the spirit, she took a deep breath to make sure she didn't lose it.

As he searched, and told her where to go, she did exactly that, rummaging through the shelf, murmuring,

"Standish... Standish, Standish, Standish..." she mumbled, pawing through things. As she found the log, she nearly called Ian, but when the locket fell out, she called out immediately, holding it in the air triumphantly,

"Look! I think I found something in Standish's log!" she said, holding it up proudly.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Ian brightens and takes it gently, scowling over it thoughtfully. I think this is a child's... he says sadly. Why do I get the feeling they aren't alive...perhaps this is what led Standish to the bottle...Hm. He may be tied to this place by this item or it may be unrelated. If we burn it and he's not linked then I have a feeling he will be pretty angry with us. It is a risk...hm. I have an idea though, he goes to the window and peers out. You are two stories up. You any good at climbing? I think I may be able to distract him enough with this that he'll loose his hold over the window at least. We'll have to do some unfortunate ledge climbing but we can inch our way round to the fire escape I'm betting. You afraid of heights?

Should you be game he will take out a couple of matches and raise the locket. He whispers for you to cover him with your shotgun and then addresses the empty room. Standish! I have your wee one's locket here! If you don't want me to burn away this last scrap of memory forever, you'll open this here window right now! Otherwise it's flames for this whole room! You've kindly left me plenty of accelerant he gestures to the half filled bottle of scotch. At first there is nothing and you both wait awkwardly, then the window suddenly unlatches with a bang and the panel goes slamming up as though unseen hands have shoved it open. You hear a disembodied voice full of hate and malice. Go. Leave the locket. Not until the girl is safely out Ian replied easily. Go on Josephine, I'll be right behind you I promise he assures you, still holding a lit match close to the locket.

ooc: Climb check please! If I rolled it you would probably fall and break your neck...

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

ooc: Phew! You barely made it! Thank heavens climb checks are one of the more benign skills out there

As you head out the window Ian starts backing towards you, keeping his eyes on Standish the entire time. The night air is chilly as you slip onto the ledge and for a moment you have a wave of vertigo. It's not too high up but the pavement beneath you is hard. Fortunately the ledges are wide enough that you are able to inch your way along and the fire escape is not far. As you near the fire escape and Ian sees you are for the most part safe he follows you out onto the ledge. Unfortunately his foot slips and to your horror he loses his grip and hits his side hard on the window ledge before ultimately dropping to the street below. It's only two stories up but it looks like it hurt as he lies in a heap on the sidewalk for a moment. You rush down the fire escape and as he begins to stir, swearing savagely, the windows on the building suddenly burst into thousands of pieces, flying at the both of you like knives! Standish is not pleased it seems and you gasp as you receive several cuts slicing your flesh. Ian gets a couple himself but he ignores them as he stumbles up. His right arm is dangling strangely and you realize it is dislocated. Run. He'll be after us now he grunts and you see he is still holding the locket. No wonder Standish is furious! Indeed a moment later the ghost emerges from the wall, his mouth open in a scream of rage. The hunter is surprisingly fast considering what he's just been through. You're not sure if fear is the motivator or if he's simply that good at brushing off his injuries. He makes sure you are in front of him though as even now he is chivalrous enough to take the rear. If he's connected to this locket he'll be able to follow us. If not we should be able to lose him he explains as he urges you on. Indeed as you follow him across the street you see Standish eventually stops, disappearing with a look of pure hatred on his face. Ian has you run a bit more anyway just in case before finally coming to a stop in an alleyway. Curse this bloody arm. I don't suppose you'd be willing to snap it back in place? I can instruct you.

ooc: Go ahead and respond and if you want to help him roll a heal check

12 on treat injury check

With a worried look, Josephine ran to Ian, but of course, he stood up, tough as nails, and she nodded her head when he asked for help,

"So... this means he isn't attached to that locket." she said, matter-of-factly, "So we basically pissed him off for nothing." she said, frowning at him. He was reckless, and while she understood his reasoning for being so, she was giving him a disapproving look so he'd know she didn't appreciate him always falling and hurting himself.

With that, she tried to re-locate his arm, and help him out, despite the fact that the act of doing so nearly made her sick. Still, she hid her disgust, not wanting to reveal any weakness, and she was ready to work.

ooc: Curses! I always forget to give you damage info! You took 10 damage from all the flying glass back there.

Not exactly. It got him to open the window didn't it? Besides, now we know that we have to find his bones, assuming there isn't some other object he's attached to. It all worked out beautifully actually he grins. Well, except for that falling business. Well, better me than you right? You already have too many cuts to explain to your ma. He braces himself as you attempt to fix his arm after careful instruction on his part but to your horror it very much doesn't work. You hear an awful snapping sound and he hisses a slew of curses while clenching his jaw in a great deal of pain. After a few seconds of trying he pulls away and puts up his good hand. Alright, alright, alright that's enough thanks! he says quickly. Well this is no good. We should take care of Standish tonight if we can. Hm. Follow me he holds his drooping arm and gives you the locket to hold onto.

You end up a few blocks away at a telegraph establishment which is closed for the night. Ian removes a lock pick set and deftly opens it with your help, instructing you to hold one of the pins for him. After a lot of wiggling it finally opens and you both head inside. Hopefully no coppers are around for you would have a hard time explaining this one to your ma. He strides over to a telephone and has you help him dial a long and lengthy number before sitting down tiredly and waiting for a response. At last he gets someone and a short and blunt conversation ensues. Hey it's me, get Lily will ya? Corner of 5th and Main, tell her to bring a couple of shovels, lamp oil and a sling. I don't care if she's asleep wake her up! She'll do it for me now off with you. he hangs up the phone in irritation. Colleague is on her way. She's a mite feisty so be prepared for that but I can count on her. With my shoulder I won't be able to do much digging so it looks like the women will get a chance to do the heavy labor for once he shakes his head regretfully.

Soon you end up on the corner, waiting for the woman to come. She arrives in about twenty minutes time in a small horse drawn wagon and glaring savagely. To your surprise you see she is an Indian woman. She is beautiful with bold features and glittering green eyes and she looks none to happy with Ian. Just because you're too lazy to bring your own shovels you have to wake me up in the middle of the night? And who is this one, the latest conquest perhaps? What happened to your arm, did you two play too rough? she gives you a look of distaste.

She didn't feel like now was the time for her to speak, given that these two clearly had history, and they probably had a lot to say, so she just remained quiet, and ready to help, whenever possible.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Oh very funny Ian mutters drily. The woman ignores him and looks at you in surprise, not expecting a cheerful response after her snide remark. Ian interrupts her reaction with a quick explanation of what happened. And this young lady is no conquest I'll have you know he adds flatly. In fact she might be the safest woman from my advances in New York with a mother like hers. She's Hartley's daughter, you know that hunter up in Nebraska with the bar? Oh! The hunters bar! I passed by there once a couple years ago she nods in remembrance. That Djinn case remember? I am sorry about your father she turns to you sincerely. I suppose you've caught wind of things and want to be a hunter now? she arches an eyebrow. That's about how most of us got into the life. If anyone tries to talk you out of it you give them hell. Ignorance as to what's out there doesn't make you safe, it makes you dead. Might as well be the aggressor rather than the victim Ian rolls his eyes at this. Well if you're done recruiting do you think you could find time to reset this thing? We have a grave to get to, though I'll need you to help with that too I'm thinking he adds sheepishly. Lily makes a face and in one smooth motion she bends him over at the waist, pulls on his limb and forcefully shoves it up into his socket with a terrible popping sound, explaining to you the entire time what she's doing. Now that she knows you aren't some hussy she's much friendlier towards you. The important part of resetting a shoulder is not to be gentle. Just really give it a shove she grins even as Ian winces in pain. Seconds later though his arm is in place and she quickly puts a sling around it.

So this is your first hunt then girl? What do you think so far?

Seeing and hearing the woman's take on things, Josephine was immediately impressed, and her face may have shown it a little bit. When she was addressed, she laughed softly, and responded,

"I think its a bit scary, but I also think you have a lot more sense than he does." she said, indicating Ian with a tilt of her head, "He's already fallen off of a rooftop, tried to convince me it'd be better to hide my head in the sand from these creatures... he's quite the character." she said, glancing at him a bit fondly with her last comment, "I think he means well, though. He's tried to look after me well enough, and he doesn't seem like a bad person."

Nodding her head, she continued, "So, yes... first hunt, and I find it exhilarating, terrifying, but exciting. I'm ready for more." she said, her gaze determined.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Lily laughs at your description of Ian. Yes he's an interesting individual to say the least. And you got after me for knocking over that shelf! she teases the man, turning to him. One thing you'll learn is things can go wrong very easily. My advice, don't climb out a window any higher than two stories if you can help it she chuckles. And yes he does mean well. They all do. He's not the only one who will tell you to turn back and live a normal life. Most of us are tempted to at some point but if not us then who would keep the evil at bay? If everyone was too afraid to take the risks there would be no one to keep order in the world. You just remember that now when people start doubting you and as a woman they will only doubt you more. she looks angry at the memory and you judge that she's been through plenty of naysayers herself. We've let the men have their way too long it's time to start doing things ourselves. Ian shakes his head with a grin at this. You know I am still here right? he laughs. Yes and because you were too careless to climb down safely we two women have to take over for you. You have made my point excellently thank you.

In spite of their banter you get the feeling that the pair are very close though more in a brother/sisterly way than a romance. She turns back to you. Ready for more? Good, because there is more out there waiting for you. I heard your father was killed by a demon? Of all that you will face, nothing is more perfectly evil than demons and I fear you will face many of them. We'd best see you are ready for it.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Lily gives you an approving nod. I do love fresh recruits. They have so much energy she grins. Let's see if we can't put any of that to good use shall we? As she gets back in the wagon and bids you follow, Ian suddenly looks nervous. Uh...I suppose you're going to be driving aren't you... it's not a question but rather a statement of dread. She glares at him. Well I know the way and you were the fool who fell out a window. I'm a wonderful driver! Besides, we'll get there at twice the speed if I do it. You always were wretchedly slow. Ian turns to you with a wince. My advice to you Josephine? Hold on to anything you can.

Indeed he seems to be right to warn you for as the Indian guides the horses through the streets you find she is incredibly daring as a driver. At first it seems as though she is reckless and perhaps a bit insane but the more you pay attention the more you realize she is extremely skilled, handling the sharp turns masterfully where anyone else would have tipped the wagon. Truth be told it is enormously fun too and looking at her face she looks just as exhilarated. Ian looks pale and it's hard not to laugh at his nervousness. When you finally end up at the graveyard, a large stately place surrounded by a wrought iron fence ten feet high, Ian scrambles out of the wagon gratefully. You do realize my arm still hurts? he snaps. Nothing like jostling around in a hellish wagon ride right after dislocating one's arm. She rolls her eyes. Don't be an infant Ian. If you want my help we're going to get it done quickly. I'm missing out on valuable sleep. Now, do you have a name? He relates the information to her but because of his arm is unable to scale the fence and so must stay behind though he does pass the shovels and pack through the bars for you and boosts you both up with his good arm. Apparently he is quite strong. You do quite well on your climb and Lily manages nicely too though you are pleased to note you are more graceful at it. What's more you both seem to be sneaky enough to avoid the attentions of the nightwatchman who apparently patrols the perimeter of the cemetery.

Soon you find yourselves breaking into a small stone building. Lily shows you carefully how she does it, picking the lock expertly. We break into this place so often I'm surprised they haven't just laid out a key for us she laughs. It looks to be a records room and she explains that it has the information on all the plots. So much easier than eyeballing every stone she grins. She gives you a stack of files to search and you are pleased to find his name relatively easily. Well aren't you a natural already? she smiles. Then she quickly sketches a map from the information before putting everything back the way it was.

ooc: That's a lot to skim over so I'll let you respond before moving on just so you get a chance to put your two cents in.

Laughing openly at Ian's reactions, Josephine didn't bother hiding it. She was high on excitement, and enjoyment. She really liked her new friend, and her feisty attitude!

As they found the records, Jo noticed she was more graceful, and perhaps a natural, but Lily was the expert here. If she could spot 2 things she was better at, there was no doubt in her mind Lily noticed 20 things that she did better than Jo did!

"He's really a big baby, isn't he?" she laughed with Lily as they worked together.

ooc: Good to hear!

Oh all men are she grins. But Ian isn't completely useless all the time. You just caught him on a bad day She carefully locks the door behind you as you leave and hands you a shovel. If he ever flirts with you though you bash him in the nose. Or better yet, kick him between the legs. He could stand to be put out of commission for a while. Though with rumors of your mother perhaps he will be smarter than that. I met her once you know, long time ago. Very kind if you're on her good side but otherwise, well I'm sure I don't have to tell you. You come from good family. Your mother may not agree but I think you were made for this.

By now you are amongst the graves. She waits until you are close before risking a light lest you alert a watchman and only then does she light it until you confirm the man's grave. The stone reads his name followed by: "Finally at peace with his wife and daughter." Lily snorts. At peace my elbow! Well, we'll take care of that right? She extinguishes the light and starts to dig, handing you a shovel and giving you tips of how to angel the head. It is exhausting work and you are surprised at how tiring it actually is. You know, I think I envy Ian right now she pants. He would hurt his arm when there's work to be done. At last you hit wood and she pulls down the bag of supplies. Before you can do anymore though you hear a shout coming towards you and a man with a lantern and a pistol. Lily swears savagely. Well, time to split up I suppose. Would you rather be arrested or burn this fool for me? I'm thinking  your mother would prefer you not to land in jail but I never want to deprive someone the opportunity of their first arrest she laughs.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Beaming with pride when Lily compliments her 'stock', Josephine was proud to be counted as part of a good family.

"They're the best. Mother's bad side, however... yea, we'll just say I agree!"

When the light and man suddenly appear and make noise, Josephine bites her lower lip in thought a moment, and then shakes her head,

"You stay here, I might be able to convince the guard that something was going on, and I was in trouble. Every man likes to be a hero, right?" she laughed softly, and turned, heading off towards the man with the pistol, "You finish the job, and come save me if my tactic doesn't work, yea?"

With that, Josephine headed off towards the man, and when she drew within distance (she left the shovel behind so she didn't look guilty) she ran up with a terrified voice, holding her arms out in front of her to embrace the man in a scared hug,

"Oh thank God!" she called out, glancing behind herself, but not towards Lily, slightly off to the side, so the man would head the wrong direction if he was intent on being a hero, "I came out here to pay my respects to my father, and something moved in the shadows! Or at least... I thought it was something! It was so scary!" she exclaimed, crying into his shirt, as she gripped on tightly. She was trying to play to his 'manliness' and making him feel like a protector. She'd dealt with enough drunks at the bar to know the basic instincts of most men, and she played it up... being the victim.

Not sure what to roll, but I'm guessing charisma/bluff or diplomacy? I'll roll bluff, for the lie, and then when I try to talk him out of approaching Lily, I'll roll diplomacy.
17 bluff
37 diplomacy

I'm hoping I'm playing this sort of character right. She's social, so combat, or just hurrying wouldn't be her way. I'm guessing she'd try to manipulate this man, and control the situation, and escape later using her words and body language. If I'm wrong, please smack me and correct me!

He takes a description from you of your attacker and assures you he will find him, saying he will take you home if you wish. Before you can answer though there is a WOOOSH not far off and you both turn to see an open grave completely on fire. Lily is nowhere in sight so she apparently did her job and booked it, which is exactly what you needed. The cop of course doesn't take this well and he tells you to stay while he goes to investigate. As he rushes off Lily pops up from behind a large headstone to your left and waves at you before sneaking off back towards the wagon. It is up to you whether you stay and finish your lie or book it...

ooc: If you do run while he's distracted please roll a hide/move silently again.

13 and 19 hide/move silently

Josephine grins at Lily as she is leaving, and she takes off after her immediately. The cop, she assumes, would assume that she was scared and just ran off when given a chance, so she figured he wouldn't cause much problems. Plus, Lily mentioned that they broke in here all the time, so he'd probably just brush that off too.

She took off after Lily, but if she was noticed, she tried to sob again, and pull the whole "I'm just scared" routine. If not, she re-joined Lily and took off, exhilarated by the whole situation.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

You manage to evade the officer and you and the Indian quickly return to the waiting Ian who is still with the wagon. Lily laughs as she climbs in, taking the reins. Well that was a lot better than my plan! I suppose if I were a better actress I wouldn't get arrested so much! she grins. Nicely done.Ian climbs in warily, aware another wild ride is in store. I saw the fire. Looks like you must have done the job he sounds approving. By now you are headed off again and Lily asks where you live so she can return you home. I'll send someone by the firehouse tomorrow to make sure Standish really is gone Ian explains, still wincing at his shoulder. Just as long as it's not me, I'll be asleep Lily informs him flatly.

She drops Ian off at his flat and he grins and waves with his good arm. I'll be catching up with you soon Josephine. Very nice work today! He looks impressed. As soon as farewells are done Lily turns the wagon around and starts towards the bar. Alright then, ready for the highlight of the night? Let's go and have a chat with your mother. Her face looks grim but determined. I'm not wild about the idea but she deserves to know the truth and you shouldn't have to lie to family. I'll help you. Think of it like initiation, trial by fire she grins at her own joke.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Nodding her head, Josephine's mood sobered almost immediately when Lily mentioned telling her mother.

It wasn't telling her mother the truth so much that bothered her, it was the fact that she had been willing to lie to begin with. Her mother was sharp, and would know the difference between Jo telling her ahead of time, and Jo telling her after. She would be able to connect the dots.

Still, if Lily was willing to help her, then she was willing to step up and be brave about it. It was all she could have hoped for.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Ah silent resignation. That's what I like to see Lily laughs as she urges the horses on. Relax, I won't let her kill you.

You arrive at the bar all too soon and at this late hour your mother has surely been worrying about you. There are still a few customers hanging about but as soon as you enter Elizabeth has Billy take over and walks towards you with a mixture of worry and fury. The worry especially since you are covered in dirt and various cuts from when Standish hurled that glass at you, not to mention the brick to the back. You will have bruises tomorrow. Lily stands next to you but she's not stupid enough to get in your way. At first your mother says nothing, just looks you up and down to make sure you're alright and then gives a curt nod. She grabs your wrist, barks for Billy to take over and then drags you to the back room as though you had planned on resisting her. Lily follows, the twitch of a smile on her face. By the time you get to the room Elizabeth turns and snaps at Lily, If you want a drink Billy will help you. Otherwise scat. My daughter and I have a conversation in the works. Lily meets her gaze levelly, her green eyes unyielding but also amused. Ah so you don't remember me. Good. she smirks. But no, I will not be...scatting. You're going to want to hear what I have to say, after you hear what she has to say she gestures to you. After hesitating your mother jerks her head for Lily to follow though she is none too pleased about it. A moment later she increases the lamp light so she can glare at you in full illumination. And of course, as expected she sets into you. I would ask you where the blazes you've been but I'm not stupid. You went and got that Hunter's address didn't you? You've been out hunting when I expressly forbid it! And look at you! The first night and you're already hurt! You're lucky you're not dead in a gutter somewhere you fool! And then you lied to me? What made you think that was a good idea?!

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Being dragged into the back room, Josephine's heart sank. As her mother leveled her gaze on her, she remembered that, despite her talents with socialization, her mother is where she got it all from. When she demanded answers, Josephine knew she was in trouble,

"I...I... mama, please...!" she stammered, unable to fully mount a defense, but she shrugged off her worry, and spoke again, more firmly,

"Mama, I've made a choice. I made a hard choice, and thanks to you and papa raising me well, I can make a good choice." she said, hugging her mom suddenly, and leaning against her, regardless of whether her mom tried to push her away or not.

Pulling back, and holding her mother with both arms, she spoke directly to her, wanting honesty, and nothing hidden. Her mama meant way too much to her for this dishonesty, and she wanted her to see that,

"I did good things tonight, and helped good people! And besides a few cuts and bruises, I'm perfectly fine mama. You've raised me well, and you've taught me to survive. I want to do this, and I want you to support me in doing this." she said firmly, hoping that her mom could find a way to do so.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

A heated argument ensues though she doesn't push you away when you hug her. She says she won't support you in your suicide and do you want to rob her of the only family she has left, etc? It is about as you expected. After several minutes of no headway Lily finally steps in and tells you to take a seat. She faces your mother with an unflinching face despite the fact that Elizabeth looks furious for being interrupted, she had been in a particularly vehement lecture at the moment. Alright that's enough Mrs. Hartley. You need to stop treating Josephine like a child. Truth is she's a grown woman as she's been trying to tell you but you keep treating her like a little girl. I imagine whether you like it or not she's going to continue. You can either support her and help her through it or you can abandon, as you said yourself, the only family you have left. Elizabeth looks like she's been slapped but quickly recovers. I never said I would abandon my daughter! she snaps. Good. Then you may as well stop flapping your gums and accept her choice. Yelling isn't going to change anything as you can see and all you're doing is making that poor man out there do all the work when we could all be drinking! And Jo here has earned quite a drink. Elizabeth gapes at the woman's bluntness and glares before storming out, presumably to help Billy. Once she's gone Lily laughs and turns to face you. You're too nice Jo. It's good that you care about your mother but sometimes you've got to be a bitch. Some people like that cop at the cemetery you can sweet talk. Others it won't do a thing. Strong women react best to strong women. Once you get that down I think you'll be incredibly affective. I never learned the sweet talking thing myself she shakes her head. But I can teach you to be assertive at least! She starts to go before turning back. Let her cool off a bit and then talk to her again. You can still be nice but don't be too nice. she winks. She'll come around.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Jo was surprised... thoroughly. For her seeming 'lack of social skills' Lily sure just handled her ma in a way she'd never seen anybody do before. Her father, maybe once, had won an argument with her, but that was still a guess, as otherwise, her ma stomped over anyone.

With that, she went with Lily out into the bar, and her shock was registering still, but she hid it with her expression, instead smiling at Billy, and making sure to say hi. She'd missed him today, and she was glad to see him again. She waited around, and did as Lily said she should for a while, relaxing and hanging out.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Lily orders a scotch and drinks it lazily though she warns you against ever having too much. Taking the edge off is all fine and good but you can't fight well drunk and you should always be ready for a fight. she frowns in thought suddenly. Well, except for Shojos of course. You can ONLY fight those when you're drunk, well at least according to Ian anyway. I still think he was making that up... Meanwhile Billy seems happy to see you though keenly aware of the trouble between you and your mother as she is slamming things around and has a face of ice that keeps even her regular customers wary of her. Oh look, she's calming down Lily chuckles, standing up to leave. Well I'll leave you to it then. I'm sure either Ian or I will be in touch soon but for now go ahead and take a break, figure out your situation. You know where to find Ian I'm sure if you need anything. It's been a pleasure meeting you Josephine. And remember, if Ian ever tries to add you to his conquests you just put a boot between his legs. It worked wonders for me!

After that you go upstairs and clean up as you are bloody and dirty and now that you have a drink in you, you're feeling much calmer though your mother still weighs heavily on your mind. Should you come down and offer to help she will wave you away and the rest of the night is spent upstairs awaiting the inevitable conversation. It never comes and you fall asleep in your bed still dressed and waiting. Finally early the next afternoon you wake up to find the sunlight streaming in through your window and a tray of porridge and coffee on your nightstand. Your mother sits in a chair, staring at you and you find yourself jolting awake in surprise.

Must have really been through somethin. This is late even for the hours we keep she notes flatly. Look, we can both yell at each other until we're blue in the face but I don't see that changin anything. You got my stubbornness apparently and this argument is just going to go around in circles. Now I ain't happy but you know that. And I don't like that Indian woman at all. I think I remember her from a couple years back, always did have a mouth on her. Don't you go learnin bad habits from her now! she warns. Now, if you're going to be fool enough to go hunting then you had better at least be smart about it. That means knowing when to run away you understand! That's something your father never learned and look what happened to him she shakes her head bitterly. Believe it or not, I still have a lot of hunters that come in and I've been helpin them out not that you'd ever know it if I didn't tell ya. You can start by getting acquainted with some of them they will have good tips for you and they'll keep an eye out for ya. I don't know much about whoever it is you've fallen in with so I will need details young lady. I don't like you runnin around with strangers. And you keep to small potatoes too! Don't go off after some demon or other foolishness, you're not ready. You may never be ready either so get that through your head!

Nodding her head quietly, Josephine was an obedient child, for once in her life, and was quiet, and submissive. She knew when she'd won a victory, and she wasn't about to tarnish it with her mouth.

"I will mama, thank you." she said, certain she needed to thank her for understanding, at least a little.

Sighing a moment, she added, "I'm running with that girl, Lily and a man named Ian. Both seem to know you." she said quietly.

Elizabeth listens, looking particularly displeased about the guard. You know if you get arrested I don't have the money to bail you out all the time. I hope these friends of yours have enough pocket money for that. I used to have to bail your father out constantly. It gets expensive she sniffs. After a moment she continues in a softer tone. Look, you know how I feel about this. I hate it. I thought I was done worrying about family members never coming home or seeing what the job does to them. You remember that look in your father's eyes sometimes? Like he'd just seen all the evil of the world and had to carry that burden himself? Well now you know why. Hunting will kill you Jo. If not your body then your spirit. I hate to see that but what kind of mother would I be if I abandoned you for trying to do the right thing? If I could control you I would but somehow you went and grew up when I wasn't lookin she gives a small smile. And as unhappy as I am about it all, I am proud of what you're trying to do. That don't mean I won't keep tryin to get you to change your mind though. The things you see may just change it for me. One ghost is small potatoes I hope you know. And if anything happens to you I'm going to hold this Lily and Ian responsible so they had best be runnin if you ever don't come back to me. And you, you need to be more careful. If you keep comin home all banged up like this I'm going to put a stop to this nonsense myself you hear me?

Smiling when her mother smiled, Josephine immediately felt much better. She didn't want to have to do this on her own, and now she knew she never had to,

"Thanks mama." she said, throwing her arms around her mother's neck in a hug, "And if something happens to me, blame Ian, but not Lily. She seems to have some sense about her." she teased a bit, smiling again.

After a moment's pause, she spoke candidly,

"I don't know that this is for me either, mama, but I need to try. And from what I understand, whether I know about these monsters is irrelevant... they know about me. Whatever demon killed daddy is out there, and knows about both of us. We don't have to pay attention, but if we do, maybe we see it comin', you know?" she said, adding, "And if there's any chance I get to kill the one that hurt dad, you know I'm going to." she said, resolve tight in her voice.

She hugs you back and makes a face at the mention of Lily. Sense? I think you mean sass honey. I think I remember her from a couple of years ago. One of our customers was givin her guff about being an Indian and she put him through our window. She paid for it but didn't exactly appreciate the gesture she finishes drily.

She listens to the rest soberly. I know you'll try Jo, but you're brand new at this and your dad was an old hand. He got killed after decades of hunting. I know you want revenge but don't you try it unless you are sure. You know nothing right now though I suppose you think you did well today and maybe you did. But one good day doesn't keep you safe from everything out there. Remember that. Now, if you're going to be out huntin all the time I'm going to need to hire another worker, at least part time anyways. That doesn't take you off the hook completely though she adds.

You two finish your conversation and though you are on good terms again there is still a tightness in the air between you. This is not something she is happy about. The next three days pass by uneventfully. Should you go to Ian's home he is not there and no one makes contact with you. Your mother is relieved but you are troubled. Have they given up on you already? On the third night a woman enters your bar. She is black, beautiful and somehow proud looking in spite of her skin. She is finely dressed and has long thin braids and sharp eyes. She walks right up to you, ignoring Billy's request of what she wanted to order. Hello Josephine. I am Victoria. Is there someplace we can talk?

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

She follows you and gives you a tight smile though her face looks on edge. My name is Victoria Green and I am a friend of Ian and Lily's. To be honest, I am sort of their leader she gives an awkward wince as though the title is still new to her. And I'm afraid we need your help. We need everybody's help, there are circumstances that are getting out of control and it's time to implement a draft so to speak. she sighs and starts to walk as she talks, indicating you should follow. I know you are new and you're not a hunter yet but we are desperate and there are so few we can trust. There is a demon she looks around to make sure no one is eavesdropping. Belial is his name, one of the most powerful demons that hell has ever spit out. He has plans to take the world for himself and he has banded together nearly every legion of unclean creature there is. We had a hundred or so good men and women who were just decimated and my father was killed. Our headquarters are in chaos and I don't know who to trust. You though, you are an outsider, you are not involved in this. I can trust you, I feel it. I need every hunter I can get... She then goes on to explain about the Men of Letters, an organization of knowledge gatherers that work in tandem with hunters to rid the world of evil. There are multiple chapters and she now heads the one in New York. Apparently half of the members had been possessed by demons for some time and just that day they were captured and exorcised, which resulted in the deaths of most of the hosts. Belial has tricked a cult known as the hand of Baal into serving him and he will bring hell on earth if he is not stopped. A witch known as Emma Bentley was killed by Belial and only she knows the means to stop him. Lily, Ian and a couple other members are currently trying to recover the body in order to resurrect her so they can question the woman. I know it's a lot to take in but if you are truly serious about hunting it's time for a trial by fire as they say. I need to ready you quickly and it may as well start now. Would you come back and wait for the others with me? You need to meet the rest of the group and I think it's time we had you outfitted properly. You won't be an effective hunter otherwise.

"Umm, real quick, if you don't mind... my mother knows about all of this, but I'd like to be honest with her. Please, come and speak to her about it, so she knows where I'm going." she said, leading Victoria inside to speak with her mother.

She didn't want to be the one explaining this to her!

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

Victoria looks unsettled at the idea of explaining it to your mother but at last she agrees, looking nervous. Soon you are all three in the back room (poor Billy, alone again manning everything) and she goes into greater detail about everything she just told you. Your mother listens wordlessly and is silent a long while, occasionally asking for clarification here and there. Apparently things are worse than you realized for this Belial has even the goddess Hecate is helping him, shocking considering you thought her a myth. Even death himself (also surprising) has become involved and has given them the witch's soul to return to her body just to keep these events from coming to pass. An angel and even a few demons are on your side that is how intense the situation is that evil itself has agreed to side with you. She really meant it when she said she needed everyone. As she talks you find her manner soothing and her words to be sincere. At last Elizabeth speaks. Well then if it does no good to keep Jo tucked away I guess I can't deny you her help but if she is killed you will have me to answer to she adds. And what's more you will have my help too. I have a network of hunters that I trust. I can be a base of operations as much as I am able. You're not alone in this.

Victoria looks relieved and nods gratefully. Yes, we will go now. Be careful of who you trust Mrs. Hartley. We have been tricked before and demons and shifters are everywhere. If your bar is not already warded you may wish to do so. Elizabeth waves the concern away. Already done. I had devils traps painted under the floorboards. I'll keep an eye out for shifters too. she adds. Nodding Victoria starts to leave and Elizabeth gives you a hug and tells you to be careful. Soon you are outside with the black woman and you both take a hansom cab to a much finer part of the city. She leads you to a brownstone building some three stories high and very elegant. This is our safe house and only a handful of people know about it. You must keep it secret Jo, even from your mother. The fewer who know the better as this is where Emma will be and we must keep her safe. She leads you inside. It is warded of course, and no humans can enter save for the ones I select. It's as safe a place as I can make it. As you walk in the parlor you see all manner of strange items, feathers, bones, a circle of black powder and in the center a severed rotting head of a middle aged woman. It smells very unpleasant.

Victoria nods at your determination. At your mention of the severed head she laughs. I'm sorry I suppose that could be distressing. Her name was Emma Bentley, a witch and a very nasty one at that. She was killed for disobeying Belial. We aim to resurrect her this very night so that she might tell us the means of disposing of Belial. It is our job to be ready when the others arrive with the body. she explains. As I'm sure Ian has informed you, witchcraft is a real element in this world. I myself am a practitioner of hoodoo and though it seems macabre at times it has come in very useful. I apologize for the offensiveness of some of its components though she gestures to the bones and such. I suppose I should ask, how squeamish are you? I'm sure you've never handled a dead body but how do you think you would do with it?

Laughing once herself, Josephine looked quite comfortable,

"Trust me, you haven't seen disgusting until you've worked a bar like I have. Hunters ain't the most clean folk, and when they drink, believe it or not, it gets worse." she laughed, trying to bond with Victoria over this stuff. It truthfully didn't bother her that disgusting stuff was involved, now that it'd been explained what it was for. Hoodoo actually sounded neat, and she wouldn't hold that against her. She judged other women on their actions, and their inner strength, not on side effects of their work. She liked both Lily and Victoria, and she had a feeling there would be even more coming up!

"Speaking of pigs, I've dealt with Ian. I'm sure a dead body couldn't be much worse..." she smiled, laughing again.

Oh yes Ian. He's...a character... she chuckles. He's not as bad as he seems. I think he just needs to find the right person to settle down with, well if we don't all get killed first she makes a face. So, I'm thinking it would be good practice for you then to help me sew the head and neck back together. Are you any good with a needle? To be honest there are times when an autopsy is necessary and when you're on the road on a hunt there isn't always someone else to do it. How a body has been killed will determine a lot about what it was that did the killing. You may have to dig around people's guts quite regularly. I figured a simple little dismembered head is a good way to start don't you?

Wonderful! I find a half stitch works well if you know it she smiles. It's a good thing she's been dead a while, fresh corpses tend to be slippery you see. Oh would you be interested in tea while you wait? I'm sorry I didn't offer before she shakes her head. I've...had a rough day. And no wonder as her father and half of her company were killed. It's remarkable she's held it together as well as she has! But then you get the feeling that she's very determined what with the world ending and all. It is all so much to process yet in spite of all the distressing news you've received you can't help but be excited. It's much better than rotting in the bar the rest of your life.

She speaks to you through the kitchen as she starts the kettle and tea things, apparently not even realizing you hadn't answered her yet. If you ever need a place to stay there is room enough here though I understand if you want to return to your mother after any excursions. I'm sure a sleep over or two will be warranted though so I'll have a room made up for you when the time comes. Also, you will need better weapons than you have now. A man named Samuel Colt, you may have heard of him, discovered a way to amplify weapons. He had particular success with one gun that is said to be able to kill anything. Unfortunately this ability has not been able to be duplicated but we have had some success. If the thing you are going after is not too terribly strong you can whittle away at them at least. We've been able to kill demons this way and though it takes a few shots it has been very successful. I can amplify whatever weapon you want if you give me the time.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

With Victoria's words, Josephine slowly had it sink in that this business was a lot more serious than she'd initially have hoped. Thinking about Victoria's losses, then accepting the tea, and nodding politely when the mention of staying over came up. Josephine's mind was racing the entire time, poring through all of the eventualities that she'd eventually come up to face.

Hearing about Samuel Colt, she was a bit surprised that his gun could kill anything, but after a second, she realized that earlier the day before she'd thought any gun could kill anyone. Times were changing, and she needed to adjust.

With that, she enjoyed her tea, carried on casual conversation with Victoria, and continued helping her sew, the best that she could.

Re: Chapter 5.2: Family Secrets

For the next half hour or so the two of you practice stitching on a piece of cross stitching material so that when the time comes you will be flawless. She is fairly quiet as she works save for occasionally giving you tips on all things hunting though you think it is more to distract herself than anything else.

ooc: Ok, go ahead to the other thread, chapter 5 I believe and join the others! Yay!
