Either way can work, but it depends on the situation and what you're aiming for, what theme the book has and what point you're trying to make. A critique of war might make it pointless and tragic, while one about people supporting each other might have the rescue.
Thanks! Good advice! I ended up kind of mish mashing the suggestions so that she dies while distracted warning someone else. So it's not the overdone diving in front of an arrow or bullet situation but it hopefully is less meaningless. Thanks everyone!
