Chapter 11: Sand and Stone
Loki takes the scroll pieces from Penny and with a look at it, the thing's good as new. He then goes inside the cave and carefully puts it back in one of the jars. From there he helps Emma figure out the right seals to draw to get you to Hittin and soon you find yourselves just outside the village itself.
The village is a pleasant change of scenery compared to the dead, dry desert and scrubby grasslands you've seen thus far. Everything is still dry and brown, but as you get closer you see the place is surrounded by trees. Olive, lemon, and orange trees to be exact, and the little bit of green they display is enough to make smiles break out across your group. The village itself is larger than you expected, full of stone houses and quite a bustling place. People wear colorful clothes with stripes and patterns and silks and jackets, all going one place or another. You'd estimate there are well over a thousand villagers. A much easier place to disappear for once.
Crimwall takes the lead, with his usual enthusiasm, telling you all sorts of trivia you most certainly didn't ask for as you near. You enter without incident, and he even finds you an inn, of sorts, and though it's simple and on the small side, you're just happy to have a place to stay. The furnishings are simple, including the beds, but there are beds, and that's enough. The rest of the day is spent laying low and recouping. You can easily have your clothes laundered and repaired and the food is delicious and plentiful. There are also marketplaces to explore, full of beautiful things, and should you explore them, you're not disappointed.
During this time, Loki tends to make himself scarce. Lily seems a little awkward around him, as though she has many questions she'd like to ask and is unsure how to do so. He merely informs you that he'll meet you in the morning and not to get into trouble, waltzing out without a backward glance, though you notice he's not quite as jovial as he's been in the short time you've known him. You suspect he's avoiding Lily.
Meanwhile, Ian is excited and more than jovial enough on his own. More than once he laughs about how he thought he was a "goner," and even Peter exchanges jests with him, both riding high on your unexpected victory. Ian steals a few glances at Penny from time to time, but it's so fast you aren't sure if you imagined it or not. Criwmall, is quite at a loss of what to do with Alice though. He's clearly inexperienced with women, and though he seems quite attracted to you, he is also clearly petrified of the idea of anything more...brazen, often trying to turn any innuendos or hints into talk of history or crackers or...anything! It's quite fun to tease him, he turns several shades of red every time too.
The night passes uneventfully, and though the mattresses are simple and thin, it's the best night of sleep you've had in days.
The next morning, you procure camels, thanks to the efforts of Crimwall, and you head to the Horns of Hattin. The low, rolling mountains are not as steep as you'd expected, and that suits you fine. It won't be quite so hard to get up as you'd thought.
The day before, Penny was able to get some information that there was long rumored to be more to the site than most would realize. Something about a door and a treasure, but no one had ever been able to find it. Now, as you ride in between the peaks, you can see why no one has found anything. Everything is covered in a short, scrubby grass. If there's a mountain between these two mountains, you've yet to find it. You all spread out, searching, and it takes far longer than you'd like, even with Loki's help. More than once he curses Metatron, using language that Penny and Emma likely do not approve of. What is he, The Riddler? He always was too smart for his own good. Geez, give a guy GPS coordinates, anything! he mutters.
Eventually, it is Penny who discovers something. A small mound, barely discernible, but the fact that it's perfectly placed between the two mountains, makes you investigate. You see a corner of stone, sticking out from beneath the mound, and should you start to unbury it, you'll see it is a stone cover of some kind...
ooc: Ok, I'll give you some time to react to things. Also, I will need reflex saves and a listen/spot check just so I have it ready for the next post. Penny, you can keep your same spot check from before though.
