The Haunting of the Rose - Chapter 3, Against Nature

Though you have named me as the Lord of Lies though I am the one most often awed by your capacity for deception.

--The Black Book of Malus

Once all his companions had gathered around him, Phelan activated the engine.  The room around them twisted as though everything about them was melting away into a mess of colours only to flow backwards and reform into dark hall which was filled to the ceiling with sturdy wooden bookshelves though that seemed to be the least important concern for the adventurers at the moment as their heads were swimming from the transportation.

Phelan let out a groan and clutched his head; handling the magics for the teleportation hadn't been so easy this time and he found it difficult to focus. At least he wasn't throwing up, but a headache and lightheaded feeling were not a pleasant combination.

Midagrra stumbled about and found a chair to crumple upon as Morrey did much the same upon her shoulder letting out a pained, keening, caw.
As the adventurers were getting their bearings Jubei and Drex realized they were in the library kept by the scholar Volta.  The only light was provided by those the adventurers had carried with them, and beyond that they could only here hushed and startled cries.

"That sounds like a good idea. Lets find out what the current situation is however.", the big dragonblood said and then made his way towards the door of the library, to see how the situation actually was outside.

Jubei gave a nod to what Drex suggested and walked towards the door, but didn't actually try to remove any of the barricades, at least not until everyone was ready to actually go out. "Do we have any means to take care of all of the undead at the same time, or do we have to take care of them one by one?", Jubei asked the others, just to make sure that he hadn't overlooked some helpful means at their disposal.

”When I received this staff-“ the druid thumped her staff against the wooden floor as Morrey spoke “-I was shown of vision of it and myself piercing the seal upon Kendal’s sarcophagus with the jewel at its top and the surrounding darkness was swallowed by light from within the sarcophagus.  This leads me to believe that either some power from these two objects will appear or the clouds will be forced open when this happens.”

Or I could try and run her there..", the dragonborn muttered, mostly to himself, but loud enough for the others to hear. Maybe he wanted input on those musings. He then paused and looked around.     Midagarra had begun to speak, to which Morrey cawed and had just started speaking when he suddenly cut off as another’s words echoed, not in the air but within the chambers their souls YOU HAVE TARRIED FAR TOO LONG.
A thing the colour of long dead ashes and barely the shape of a man cloaked in roiling, oily shadow-smoke stood or perhaps floated at the edge of the bundle of adventurers.
UNLIKE HIS MASTER THE NECROMAGUS WILL SLAY THIS ENTIRE VILLAGE THEN YOU WILL HAVE NO CHANCE OF ESCAPE. the white, waxy death-mask of the creature stared unblinkingly at the party with the glowing blue embers of his eyes.
WITH SPEED AND WIT YOU COULD HAVE REACHED THE SARCHOPHUS BY NOW HAVE BEEN DONE WITH YOUR MISSION.  ARE YOU SO FREIGHTENED OF THE FORCES ARRAYED AGAINST YOU THAT BELIEVE YOURSELVES POWERLESS?  YOU FACE ONLY A SMALL HORDE OF A HUNDED OF THE WEAKEST OF UNDEAD CREATURES, YOUR GREATEST OPPOSITION IS THE NECROMAGUS AT THE ARMY’S HEAD AND HIS GREAT BEAST.  STRIKE OUT NOW, THE CHAOS OF THE BATTLES IN THE VILLAGE WILL COVER YOU.  JUST ACT RATHER THEN SITTING HERE WAITING FOR THE PERFECT MOMENT!  DOZENS OF PEOPLE ARE DYING OUT THERE AND YOU CAN SAVE THEM IF YOU WOULD ONLY ACT!

Jubei admittedly was startled more by the booming voice, rather than the disembodied face suddenly disappearing out of thing air. He grimaced as he listened to what the creature had to say, before throwing his hands up in the air. "Okay, fine wraith, or whatever you are. Calm yourself, we're going, dragons damn it.", he snarled back at the creature that apparently didn't possess an indoor voice and immediately turned to the door. "We'll have to figure out what we do on the fly then. Let us go!", he spoke and moved to the door to break it open with little regard for the consquences, after all... time was of the essence.

Caught in the Sea of Despair

This challenge will use a mixture of skills and powers, so there is no set array of specific skills nor powers which will achieve success, you have a goal use what you have to achieve it, failure naturally means you draw the attention of or run into undead forces.  Though there is some grace, you are unlikely to cause a fight with a single failure unless get a natural 1, yes critical failures are a rule in use here.  Here below are some ideas as what skills can help you with here.
Acrobatics & Athletics:  Move around quickly and escape from encounters with the undead.
Perception:  Spot shortcuts or roaming undead.
Stealth:  Allows you to get around the undead without being noticed.
Streetwise:  Use what you know of the villages layout to find shortcuts, or elude pursuit. (note this would use wisdom rather than charisma in this capacity)
etc.
Because you can see where you are going you have a rough idea of how many successes are required to reach your goal.  That would be about 9.

Re: The Haunting of the Rose - Chapter 3, Against Nature

Willa followed along as well as she could.  She wanted to help, but previous attempts at helping had gone badly and now was not the time for causing trouble.  It seemed odd that they were trying to be stealthy anyway when Iron Jubei towered so tall over everything else.  How could the undead not see him?  Then again, how could they see anything?  They had no eyes in their head.  Perhaps she'd ask Phelan later.  Though, to be fair, technically her eyes weren't normal either...that was a strange thought she'd not had before.  Did that mean umbreans and undead were similar in some ways?  Did they see the world the same?  Earlier Phelan had made the confusing remark about there being umbrean magic around the sarcophagus. Was that just a misconception on his part?

Now that she thought about it, umbreans never really died.  They were just reborn.  Resurrected some might say...she shook her head.  Umbreans were nothing like undead!  Umbreans would never do such horrid ruinous things!  Of course, she hadn't met any to know for sure, but she felt that that was how things were. Also, umbreans didn't have bones.  Undead had lots of bones.  Or lived near bones.  Or were somehow connected to bones.  Umbreans couldn't be further from associating with bones.  Either physically or metaphorically.  How would one be metaphorically associated with bones?  What did that even mean?

Well, nevermind.  Back to the task at hand.  How to help without causing problems?   It was a puzzle, alright.  She couldn't even really use any of her magic.  Too showy.  And also too destructive.  If she tried to cause a distraction she'd probably end up damaging something and actually helping the undead's destruction of Kyssea.

She considered the task at hand.  They had to get to the sarcophagus so that Mardigras could use her staff on it.  That seemed most important.  Whether they were discovered or not - Mardigras had to get to the sarcophagus.  The Sarcohpagus was special in some way.  But why Mardigras?  Why not her?  Despite her size, Willa was pretty sure she could outrun anyone here, the druid included.  Perhaps that was what she should do?  Run really, really fast and try to cause a distraction?  It sounded risky.  She wasn't well and if the undead had ranged weapons, or spells she'd be certain to die.  She didn't really want that.  Life was precious.  Especially so to short-lived umbreans.  Every moment mattered.

It was a bit late coming as it suddenly occurred that it may have been better to have laid an ambush and had the sarcophagus come to tiem instead.  None of this flapping about would have been necessary then.  She sighed unhappily at her own slow wits.

What else was there then?  Her words were useless.  She wasn't the best spoken of individuals, but somehow she always seemed to be able to talk her way out of the worst situations.  Or into them.  But not here.  The undead weren't good at conversation.

In the end she decided she was useless.  She wanted to help, but could not find a way to do so that would not hinder the party.  Sullenly, she followed along.

It might have come as a surprise, or even a shock, that a being as big as the kaetyma would even dare to attempt to be inconspicious or even hiding. And yet he did it. With clever use of a rug and proper placement, he could pass as a pile of barrels. Or something like that.

Re: The Haunting of the Rose - Chapter 3, Against Nature

Things were going slow.  Too slow.  And though Willa was scared of causing problems by making a scene, she was becoming more scared of innocent people dying because of her inaction.

She was still interested in the way undead could see without eyes and had been thinking on it for some time now.  It seemed pretty obvious that they had some sort of magical sight.  Magic had created and animated them afterall.  Perhaps that meant she could use magic to obscure the group?  The problem was, she mused, that necromancy was at least as closely tied to divine power as it was arcane, if not more so.  She therefore had no idea wther she was actually capable of influencing the skeletons' senses or not.

Gulping down her apprehension, she decided that there was little chance of finding out unless she tried and spurred her relucatant legs forward.  Calling upon her superior speed, the little umbrean weaved her way forward, circling around her friends.  Once she reached the front of the group, she headed back in much the same manner before returning to the front.  Then back again.

As Willa moved, like so many times before, wispy shadows began to form around her.  However, this time she sought to extend their influence.  Envelope everyone and shield them form their enemy's attention.  She tried to make her shadows larger and last longer.  It was difficult and draining but, with a little luck, might help if only a little?

00:27, Today: Willa rolled 11 using 1d20+7. Arcana - Umbrean Shadowdance?

Only Willa really noticed the effect of her magic as the darkness made it almost impossible for anyone to see as the air shimmered only ever so slightly as the quick spell Willa cast threw up a mystic veil around the party, cloaking them from the sight of the undead.
[Well done Willa, you just barely made it, but you grant from now until the end of the encounter a +2 bonus to all checks related to Stealth or Athletics in evading the undead.]
Despite Jubei’s haste he only managed almost run the party a dead end though Drex’s keen memory helped memory of the town’s layout lead them back on the proper path and with Phelan’s keen eyes the party managed to navigate around another party of undead.
[Nicely done everyone!]

The adventures realized they were upon the final stretch, ahead of them was the town square and the band of zombies carrying the sarcophagus.  Though they were not alone, there was a group of undead accompanying them, a patrol it seemed which had only just met up with them.  They were composed of some of the same hounds the adventurers had fought days before upon the road to Kyssea as well as some skeletons and things which looked like death lanterns.
[You could sneak up and attack them or wait and move around when the patrol had gone.  The choice, as always, is yours.]

"So it would seem that the patrol is going to wait until the sarcophagus has passed before they head off elsewhere. We don't have to worry about them too much then and we can safely ambush the zombies further down the street.", he said and then motioned the others to follow him as he moved to find an alley that would allow them to lay an ambush on the zombies.
With the sarcophagus so close however, it was quite a task to focus upon.

Drex looks around to see if he can spot a possible ambushing spot the group may utilize. "Mmm, what about there..." He points to a spot there the sarcophagus and the carriers will be going through a narrowing of the road because of the buildings on either side. And it would look like the buildings could provide good cover, but they have to investigate it first. They have to do this quick, because in a few moments the sarcophagus will be there.

Re: The Haunting of the Rose - Chapter 3, Against Nature

As the bolt of mystic power struck the last remaining zombie, who was looking down at the sarcophagus at that moment, the undead creature simply shuddered, sighed and fell over backwards with a low thump.  Despite how incredibly precarious their situation was, for a moment Midagarra seemed hesitant as she had held her spear like staff in her hands.
Battle for the Golden Sarchophagus: Players gain 30 Experience Points each.

Midagarra seemed visibly shaken as she walked towards the sarcophagus.  She seemed lost in her own thoughts as she started at it for some time.  Her hesitation seemed to be costing everyone precious time.  Then she raised her staff, closed her eyes and stabbed the blue jewel at the glowing box.

It seemed impossible that a gemstone of any sort could pierce the stone of the sarcophagus yet it did, sliding noiselessly into the lid which did not seem to do much of anything.  Midagarra opened one eye to look down at the situation.  The jewel, half-imbedded in the lid grew in brightness until it was a brilliant pale blue-white light.
A cord boomed through the dark, like some celestial trumpet blaring, the noise was deafening.  From the jewelled head of the staff, glowing, blue lines were flowing out over the sarcophagus and in moments the box was covered in some strange diagrams and glyphs the adventures did not recognize.
  Suddenly the box shattered.

All the pieces pushed out of the way of the staff as the interior was exposed a dim red light shone out of it, bathing Midagarra in its glow.  Still, Midagarra held onto the staff, her eyes wide and her expression apprehensive as from the broken sarcophagus rose a mass of iridescent blood.  The staff raised itself, the jewel at its head pointing straight at the centre of the floating mass of glowing blood which began to shrink until it was only a ball a few inches across.  Around the ball of blood a lowing figure of a headless human formed.  Something flashed in the air above it, casting shadows and silhouettes of something towering up far into the sky lighting up the dark clouds from underneath as beams of sunlight began to break through the clouds.
The remains of the sarcophagus flew out from where they had been held loose by whatever magic the staff had used, the pieces glowed and spun into a circle about Midagarra and the headless, glowing, white, figure of a man.  They began to lift up into the air buoyed by some unseen force.
Directly overhead the dark clouds churned about a brilliant hole in the clouds as stars streaked down from the aperture upon the village below.  There were no crashes the stars resolved themselves into radiant angelic figures who gathered themselves in a series of tiered rings around the rising company of Midagarra and the headless, glowing figure.  Who had by now reached a point so high above the adventures as to be barely discernible as individuals.
  The angels began to sing.

The song was without words only the tones of their voices, and the melody they sang was both beautiful, peaceful and sorrowful.  In conjured up feelings and memories of lose and despair, of hope and joy, of wonderment and awe.
Midagarra and the headless figure of a man was joined by someone or something descending from the radiant vortex above.  The distance made it impossible for the adventurers to make out what or who it was, only that it was glowing much like the headless man.  Midagarra was swallowed up in radiance and the newly arrived being or thing seemed to split as it and the glowing figure which had been Midagarra rose off into the vortex and dissapreared from view.  The two figures that remained, one the headless man and the other a featureless radiance merged as the angelic song reached a crescendo.

The dark clouds overhead had all but for the glowing vortex disappeared, and the sky revealed was not one the adventurers recognized.  It was filled with the radiance of countless suns each of different size and brilliance.  The sudden warmth radiating down from the heavens was so intense that in moment’s beads of sweat were dripping down from on each of the adventurers.  The undead simply collapsed everywhere as the magic that sustained them could not hold against glaring, celestial barrage.

The angels song ended and with it darkness returned, not from the clouds, but as the brightly lit sky of millions of suns faded into the more familiar night sky of Ancerenth, lit only by the stars and the pale, copper light of the full moon.
The angels flew back up into the glowing vortex in the only clouds in the sky, the remains of the sarcophagus and the glowing man that stood at its centre descended to the earth, coming to rest softly on the earth before the adventurers where the glow disappeared, leaving behind what appeared to be a completely nude young human, with short unkempt hair and a rather average build for a human man.  He opened his eyes, blinking repeatedly and rubbing them revealing his strange eyes to his companions, they were black save for his scintillating, red irises.  He looked around at the adventurers before him managed to croak a husky ”Hello?” then promptly stumbled forward and fell forward onto the dirt with a loud ”Oomph!” followed by a long groan.

One of the choir of angels was not rising up to the glowing vortex like its kin but was instead descending down to Kyssea.

After standing there dumbfounded for a few seconds, he went wide eyed and shook his head as he quickly trudged forward to the man. "Are you alright?", he asked.

The man on the ground was clearly struggling to move his arms, as they moved in ways contrary to what one would expect from someone who had just fallen down.  With his face buried in the dirt there was a flush of dust from what might have been an exasperated sigh before the young man managed to bring his face out of the dirt.  His face was lined with dust now and a few streaks of dirt.  He smiled awkwardly as he managed to get his arms and hands to cooperate and push him up from the ground, but he couldn't manage to stand yet and Jubei had to catch him with a forepaw.  "Thankyou." he breathed, his voice not as parched as it had been before "This body remembers but I am a stranger to it and it is strange to me." he said almost wonderingly, his brow furrowed in thought.

Phelan clambered down the building cautiously, his wand still readied for the sign of an attack. His expression was one of wary curiosity after what had happened with the casket; that had been rather unexpected. At the man's comment about his body, he immediately stopped his descent, going on guard.

At the mention of an angel, he turned his gaze to Drex nervously. He was much out of his depth; angels and the like weren't exactly covered at the Academy.

Jubei furrowed his brows, mildly irritated to say the least. His training hadn't prepared him for this either. He first looked to Drex, then quickly back into the sky where his gaze drifted around for a bit and then shook his head. "No... there were angels... but they seem to have left... or have they?", he spoke with an expression that spoke of slight confusion still. He then turned his attention back to the naked man, and after a moments hesitation offered him his waterskin. "I am afraid that we do not have a spare set of clothing... none that would fit anyway?", the kaetyma spoke and briefly looked over their group. The only one with a build similar to that of the man was Drex and so he raised a questioning brow to the Deseekay.
"We can find you some, if you would be so kind to answer our... immediate questions in return. It doesn't happen everyday that angels appear and men with strangely coloured eyes descend in blinding light."

As Drex pointed it out the adventurers did notice against the clear night sky, awash with stars, that there was a radiant, winged figure descending to an area nearby.
The naked man took a long drink from the sack, then a deep breath and seemed right on the verge of saying something when he took another long drink from the waterskin.  After which he paused again as he returned the waterskin to Jubei with a ”Thankyou.“ and furrowed his brow, looking off into the middle distance, then narrowed his eyes and blinked, closing his eyes hard for a few moments before he opened them again, blinking rapidly causing his eyes to tear up then he scratched his right ear and looked at it like seeing his hand for the first time.  He wondered at the hand for a moment, arching his eyebrows before taking a loud breath, swelling his chest before he spoke again ”I am not an angel and Midagarra was reunited with Kendal. Can I have something to wear now?  It’s awfully chilly here and I am still adapting to both this body and this plane.  I would rather not have this body become ill while I am still getting used to it.”

Thinking it impolite to ask any more question of the man until he has eaten his fill and not wanting Jubie's ire...

As Drex walked towards the Old Temple he recalled that like all the other temples to the Far Gods on Ancerenth they were sealed centuries ago, before the Dreadborn War by the angels.  Though for what reason was left unexplained, only that, at some point in the future the temples would be opened again and the clergy, who had disappeared when the temples had been sealed, would supposedly return as well at that time.  Drex could not help but wonder if that time was now.
Even though he was at least a hundred or so yards away from the temple he could see the angel’s wings poking out above buildings around it.  They were made of hundreds upon hundreds of luminous pages.

Re: The Haunting of the Rose - Chapter 3, Against Nature

Willa was the first of the adventurers to really take in their surroundings beyond the immediate area mostly because nothing had seemed to stir since the event which had so dramatically revealed the night sky.  Even by the coppery half-light of the moon it was possible to see the devastation which had befallen the village.  Which did not make sense to the umbrean given that she recalled the ehuron had said no one would be harmed if they did not leave the village before the sky had cleared.
As for any trace of the undead or the ehuron which supposedly lead them, there was only the remains of the former, nothing of the latter.  Even so the people of Kyssea were clearly the worse for wear.  What Willa saw just at the edges of the village square was tragic, scores of dead, laid low without concern for innocence.

Drex and Jubei made their way back up the alley and cut quickly to reach the Old Temple were the angel stood, there were others there too, a small crowd of villagers poking out around corners through windows.  Curiosity mixed with fear at what this angel was doing here.  The angel stood facing the doors of the Old Temple.  The large metallic book it carried laying open upon one arm as it turned through the book’s pages.  The angel reached some specific point in the book as it stopped turning and the pages it had revealed shown as they lifted from the book and separated themselves cleanly and floated towards the large double doors of the Old Temple.  Each page set itself against the door, until the entire entranceway was covered perfectly by the glowing pages.
”The gap of ages is ended.” the angel spoke in a musical baritone.  ”From eternity into time you return as foretold.  Now step forward and serve the cause of the righteous and aid the broken, the lost and the fallen as you have sworn.” only silence followed the angel’s words, though Drex and Jubei could both sense something was trying to obstruct the angel’s power.  It was a sickly, oily feeling like a grease or grime trying to smoother out the divine fire that shone through them and angel.
The angel’s wings rose and suddenly spread out, shining like the sun towards the page covered doorway.  The ring of fire behind angel’s head swelled with flame as it roared ”By Ancient Lords I pray!  Cast off the evil that lingers here!”
A flash swept out from the angel and flew over the Old Temple, briefly illuminating a silhouette of something which seemed to vanish just as Drex and Jubei could feel that sickly feeling melt away.  The doorway to the Old Temple cracked open and the pages upon it vanished as light spilt out from within.

Re: The Haunting of the Rose - Chapter 3, Against Nature

Tough not entirely familiar with the religion associated with the Far Gods Drex was aware that in the century prior to the Dreadborn War much of the clergy of the Far Gods withdrew from the world, though were they had gone the remaining priests kept to themselves.  The Isles had once been one of the great centers of the worship of the Far Gods though that worship had drastically declined by the time the Dreadborn War had occurred.  Some even went so far as to speculate that the Far Gods had abandoned or at the very least had withdrawn from Ancerenth.  There was no consensuses as to what the case was or even why it had happened.  Yet little anger or resentment had been caused by this decline only a pang of loss and regret.  Now it seemed like Drex was witnessing the return of those folk of the Far Gods.  For the realm of the Far Gods, the Immaterial Beyond was considered to be eternal a place where time was a far stranger beast then in the material universe.
What evil the angel had prayed against was either utterly gone or beyond Drex’s senses to truly perceive.  Though Drex thought he glimpsed if only for an instant dark titans, before thrones made of gleaming white bones, off in the distance beyond the temple.  He blinked and only the night sky could be scene.  Drex thought he had caught one of the dark titan’s brilliant eyes for an instant and felt his body grow cold and numb, but as he’d blinked whatever spell it had been had been broken.
[I did not make this one private because I figured Drex would share these details anyway.]
The temple doors opened and from the bright aperture issued a squad of silvery knights, each ten feet tall and covered in heavy plated armour.  Carrying large swords at their sides and shields.  Once the knights had stationed themselves just outside the doors, two more stood halfway between the angel and the temple as a dozen or so priests came out of the temple, some were human some were doola tywuar.  Two priests headed the group and were dressed in unique livery, Drex recognized these as the high priests of the temple, the temples of the Far Gods always had two high priests, both usually of the opposite gender.  Supposedly they were of almost alike mind and would make decisions together acting almost as one being rather than two.
The high priests stood before the angel and seemed to be speaking to it quietly for a moment then they bowed, the angel rose and stood just before the entrance of the temple.  With more priests coming out beside it.  Joined by more knights, at least fifty people had come out of the temple by now.  The high priests seemed to be gathering the crowds to speak to them, at least one high priest was doing so, and another was walking straight towards Drex and Jubei.  A human women clearly in her twilight years, though given her gods she may be much older then she seemed, she may have been alive for centuries if not longer.  Despite her silver hair there was some copper there amongst it, and her skin was fair though rugged with age.  Her amber eyes seemed remarkably cheerful despite the surroundings.  ”Good evening, I am given to understand that the two of you were involved in our return?”

Re: The Haunting of the Rose - Chapter 3, Against Nature

Rest was difficult to find that night, even when given into exhaustion it was fitful at best or filled with nightmares and strange dreams.  Amare spent much of the night speaking with Willa, Phelan and Daryl about very mundane matters, mostly related to the adventurers themselves.  Phelan gave very guarded answers and despite the hearty conversation was loath to give much specifics about his own background.
As for Amare he volunteered very little information about himself, Phelan often had to interrupt and clarify either Willa’s questions and even those Phelan asked himself he had to phrase carefully as Amare would only ever say precisely what was needed as a response.  Phelan felt more like he was talking to some machine then a person.  Though what they learned was difficult enough to comprehend but could be summarized as this; Amare was a being who had come from another plane seeking to find and secure the release of three of his kin who had become lost or imprisoned in such a way that they could only be reached from somewhere within or connected to the material universe. Amare described these kin as both Daryl and Phelan’s ancestors, he named them as Vivi, Mari and Aither.
There was some trouble getting Amare proper clothing at first as everyone who looked into Amare’s eyes would become hysterical believe Amare to be some daemon or undead creature and requiring some convincing otherwise.  Which lead to the unnerving discovery that Amare does not bleed unless he wants to and has a capacity to heal wounds almost as fast as they are suffered.  Both concepts Amare did not find strange in the slightest.  This raised questions about Amare’s mortality to which he answered with a quizzical expression and a statement saying the fundamental assumptions within the question were at odds with reality and that everything changes form.

The angel had shot off into the heavens, disappearing into the starry night sky not long after Jubei and Drex had started working to help provide some relief to the villagers.  Both of them returned later that morning to the inn exhausted from their work and they joined their companions in uncomfortable rest.

The following morning the adventurers gathered to make their plans, intending to return to Galdion when they received messages via their guild badges, asking them to report on the situation as soon as they were able to.
In the following hour the adventurers discovered that their earlier messages had not been received by the guild which caused Phelan to theorize that the clouds which they had dispelled the night before must have also been suppressing magical communication within its area of effect.
The guild was relieved to finally have heard from them as the client, the Gravewatch had been growing increasingly impatient with lack of information on one of their inner most outposts.  The guild also asked for the adventurers to return as soon as possible so as to provide more information for the Gravewatch.
Not long into the morning the adventurers were preparing their things to depart, and looking out the windows of the inn at the devastated village about them, the tragedy of it all could not be avoided.
Half of the village was simply ruins now, the clock tower had been toppled and the village hall was thoroughly collapsed.  Furthermore apparently some kind of tremor had preceded the attack on the village and in the light of morning it was clear to see a large tract of land, only a few miles from the village had fallen into what looked like of sinkhole.  It did not take long to discover that this had been the site of the abandoned umbrean spawning pool.  With a few witnesses claiming that they had seen a bright light and fire licking up from the earth in that general area the night before.  Willa had frantically looked for an entrance to the passages underground but found them buried under dirt and rock.
Corso, the leader of the village council, came to see the adventurers and asked them about what had happened during the night, as he wanted something to tell the villagers and he asked the adventurers if they would stay the night for a celebration to help raise the spirits of the village.
There was some argument between the adventures over whether they should stay or not but ultimately they decided that they could do one more thing to help out the beleaguered village before they left.

The celebration that the village held that night was sombre with a mixture of genuine relief remixed with forced merriment.  Too many families had been broken or completely destroyed for mood to be anything else and in the shadows of the bonfires and the corners of buildings the cries of those grieving could be seen, and heard.
Corso made an awkward speech which a few folks in the audience made use of to get a few nervous laughs from the crowd.  Though Corso did not mind, it was clear to see that they respected the man even though he was not the most charismatic or capable speaker amongst them.  Corso praised the adventurers for their work in defeating the undead army and dispelling the darkness which had hung over Kyssea for so many days.  The crowd applauded and cheered for the adventurers even though some of them felt it was undeserved.  The high priests of the Far Gods also had a turn upon the stage and spoke more eloquently to the villagers, assuring them that the gods and their servants had returned to aid the people in these dark and desperate times.
Thereafter a modest feast was had and far too much liquor and as the evening grew people became far more merry.  Amare had one cup of wine and collapsed not long after, sleeping through the rest of the evening.  Willa got into a fit of giggles after a sip and made funny little noises when trying to speak for the rest of the night until she fell asleep too.  Jubei naturally lasted the entire night only getting a little warm after ingesting an entire barrel of alcohol.  Phelan’s curiosity got the better of him, as narayah only start enjoying liquors at around his age, and would not remember much of the evening thereafter only hearing some embarrassing stories.  Drex disappeared at some time after the drinking started and did not make it back to the inn until the morning.

The following morning there was some groaning, particularly from Amare who was apparently so hung over from one goblet of wine he required Phelan’s groggy attention to get out of bed.
Willa awoke that morning with far more zest and energy than anyone should have any right to have had after the previous night, and sought out the alchemist Vito, rambling something in her own particular way about taking away the bad on in his hand.  She returned thereafter, very pleased with herself and holding a dark and foreboding length of crystal which she flourished much to Phelan’s dismay as he ducked beneath it sensing the incredible, evil that was the only way he could describe it, within it.  After putting it away she gathered her things and with a few goodbyes and thankyous the adventurers departed from the village, making their way back as they had arrived though the journey back to Galdion was pleasantly uneventful.
