Service Guarantees Salvation
IT IS THE 41ST MILLENNIUM…

For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the master of mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die. Yet even in his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon infested miasma of the warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in his name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever-vigilant Inquisition and the techpriests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants - and worse.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

A week ago you were told by your superiors, many of them pale and worried at the time tell you that you’re to report to the Tricorn Palace on Scintilla at once seemingly without rhyme or reason. You were ordered to pack only what you needed to travel, your thrones, and your weapons.

Two weeks later…

817.M41 - Tricorn Palace, Scintilla

After completing a physical examination you are each, one at a time, brought into a large and imposing waiting room are told to wait until called. One wall is made up of thick glass which provides an okay view of Hive Sibellus while the other walls are made up of a dark coloured wood and embroidered with bronze designs and lattice. There are two sets of 5m high doors, one of which you just came in through. The room is full of couches and chairs, all of high quality, covered with red fabric and there’s seating enough for fifty people comfortably though you're the only ones there. One side of the room has a promethium fueled fireplace burning which brings some light and warmth to the room. Outside the setting sun shines just above the layer of clouds that rests 30 meters below you.

This is either the safest place to be on Scintilla after sunset or the most dangerous.

Korpsman Model 728a #2183 had but one Throne to his designation when he was ordered to report to the Tricorn Palace. Without fuss, the Korpsman packed up his kit, double- and triple-checked the kit for his requisite gear, and boarded the shuttle to begin his journey. Warp travel never agreed with the Korpsman, but he (as always) suffered it in silence. Whining and mewling got him nowhere; each miserable day was justified and deserved punishment for the betrayal of his people long before.

Korpsman Model 728a #2183 was perfectly compliant when ordered to submit to a physical examination and was found to be in exemplary health. After dressing, he followed his escort to the lounge he was instructed to wait within and did so without question or comment. Upon having entered the empty room, #2183 examined it for structural weaknesses, likely points of ingress and egress, and vantage points. The Korpsman approached the fireplace and gazed into it. The heat, despite his greatcoat, did not bother him. Rather, #2183 was curious as to which side from which the promethium pipes were fed. Standing several paces away on the opposite side of the pipes, #2183 stood at attention facing the rest of the room and awaited further instruction.

Service ended only in death.

It was a maxim she had learned well from every one of her instructors from the ruthless drill abbots to the no less ruthless interrogators. The Imperial Faith and Creed burned into every bone and fiber of her being along side the endless laws and edicts that ensured men did not stray. Yet stray they did. She was no less or more an example of that. She had sought to fulfill her duties and in so doing had been exposed to the machinations of the Enemy. Her flesh twisted by sorcerous energy even as she and her fellow arbites put them down with roar of shotgun and hiss of shock maul. It had twisted her and the mutation had expressed itself not long after. She had turned herself in as much as been suspected of heresy and corruption and so she suffered.

It was in her cell, proven innocent but refusing to depart, that she received the summons by way of the Chastiser Primaris to deliver herself to the Tricorn. Her freedom conditionally restored to her so long as it suited the interests of the Holy Ordos. She did not argue.

Her possessions and the hallmarks of her calling long returned to the armories of the Precinct Fortress of her homeworld... She was given no more than a simple black dress uniform. Featureless but of enviable quality and a few sundry weapons and pieces of equipment by which to fulfill the more violent demands of her call to service. When the demand was made for a physical examination to ensure her fitness. She did not demure. There was nothing to be hidden from the Holy Ordos. Her mutations, still apparent and nauseating, had taken no more of her form. The spread of scale and reptilian hall marks confined largely to where the malignant energies of the warp had touched her along her right side.

Deemed otherwise of impeccable and remarkable health given her ordeals and incarceration, she was provided with bandages to obscure her deviancy from the more delicately minded and led to the waiting room where she took up silent post opposite the Korpsman that waited. A seat refused in almost eerie mirror of the other pentient to adopt a pose at parade ground attention.

'Sina bowed her head as she entered the doors; huge doors which towered metres above her head.  Actually she scurried rather than simply entering.  She had no idea why she was here, or who she was to see, only that the official at the hospital had returned her belongings and instructed her to get here ASAP!

Her mind still tried to recall what had happened on the ship - it was a ship, wasn't it? And how she had ended up in a locked room in some kind of hospital.  She had no idea what had happened to her lady boss, Miss Elise, and of course no one was talking.

Her gaze dropped from the high ceiling and she noticed that there were two other people present; some kind of heavily armed soldier and a woman in a black uniform.

‘Sina gasped when the woman turned around; there were scales on her neck and her eyes were...

Just about to turn and flee, her courage suddenly returned.  She was an acolyte of the Imperial Inquisition.  She had been a bodyguard; she had taken part in several dangerous missions...

Here she faltered a little when she remembered that some of her memories had not returned - but her will reasserted itself and she strode forward, nodding politely to her predecessors as she did so.

“So!  Wassup?”  What we here for?  ‘ny idea?”

Kalta did not react, did not so much as move at Sina's gasp. Her parade ground posture perfect and once more reinforcing the unsettling discipline and rigid focus of the Adeptus Arbite. It was not a kindness, however, that she did not react. Merely a calm acceptance of the fact that she bore facets of the Enemy, of the unclean, now as part and parcel of her otherwise tortured form. A reality that could be no more changed than the nature and purpose of her duty to the Imperium as a whole.

The question, however, shifted her attention to the other woman. Such was no kindness in it's own right but questions demanded answers and that this woman was here meant that she was privy to whatever task the Lord Inquisitor had summoned them to carry out. Those eyes were unpleasant things... Sharp and piercing in the qualities of their gaze and made the more alien for the slit of the pupil and the bloodied and tortured nature of their overall aspect.

Here was a woman that had led no happy life and had known little comfort for a very, very long time.

"The Lord Inquisitor hasn't been forth coming with such information but then he needn't explain himself to us... Merely direct us to fulfill his will." Kalta offered in a voice that wasn't without it's own warmth but it was strong and full of conviction. A voice that had not broken or veered from it's perceived path and it's upholding of the Law and Order as decreed by the God Emperor and his chosen officers.

The Kriegsman did not turn at the arrival of the Arbiter. Eyes obfuscated by the smoked lenses of his gas mask followed the mutant as she moved to take up a post. Her scales triggered a reflex to grab his pistol and place a few well-aimed shots in her chest and face, but discipline kept his sidearm stowed. It was someone who outranked him that called the both of them there and #2183 had a feeling he would do well to fight instinct and obey his orders. If the mutant were to make the slightest misstep, however, and he would be among the first to be stirred to action.

Suffer not the mutant.

The revulsion and disdain for those whose flesh were twisted by the Warp or Ruinous Powers had been ingrained in the man since youth. For as long as #2183 could remember, he had been trained for war. Bred for it, some would say, but the Kriegsman was a firm believer that existence was war and, as his life was the Emperor's, there was no more noble a purpose than to die on a battlefield while fighting the enemies of the Imperium.

He was not, however, currently in a warzone. That fact brought forth a certain discomfort within the man. #2183 was certainly equipped to be in one; the man had his Lucius-pattern lasgun, laspistol, and double-barrel shotgun on his person in addition to a handful of fragmentation grenades clipped to his belt.

Overdressed for the occasion. he thought to himself, the corners of his lips turning up a fraction of an inch behind his mask in response to his 'clever wit'. When the second woman entered the room, his eyes moved to watch her with the vigilance of an eagle, though his kept his head (and the rest of his body) still. Calm, even breathing caused his gas mask to give off a faint, pulsing hiss. It was the only response offered by the Korpsman in regards to the question posited to the room.

Alisha had only recently arrived at Hive Tarsus where she had visited the Cathedral of Illumination, where she had visited the Convent of her Order here in the Calixis Sector. It was there that she had received the summons to come to the Tricorn. Alisha felt somewhat lucky she hadn't unpacked yet and took the first shuttle available towards Hive Sibellus, hitching a ride with some of her more militant Sisters.

After arriving at the Tricorn and undergoing a short physical test Alisha was ushered into the building where she was expected to be at. It took her a while to find the room. After finding it she stepped into the room. Her face had a calm and friendly expression on it as she stepped into the room. She gave the Guardsmen a respectful nod as a ways of greeting.

The look on her face when she looked at Kalta was hard to read as it simply became a cold expressionless one, it showed neither hatred nor compassion and Alisha gave the woman no further greeting.

She turned to look at Sina in front of her and the friendly compassionate expression returned as she spoke with a soft friendly voice "We are here to serve the God Emperor of course and it would seem the Holy Ordos of the Inquisition have chosen us to serve Him in this capacity."

Alisha had her armour on, the helmet sat on her head the re-breather simply laid against her chest as she hadn't clipped it on. Mounted on her wrists she had a fairly odd looking set of tools on them. Over her armour she wore her shield robes, over her back she carried an Autogun with a fire-selector on it and on her left hip she carried a pistol.

The other set of doors in the room opens gently and servo skull with a censer smoking beneath it floats into the room and, at a distance, seems to be scanning each of you. Following shortly afterwards is an older man dressed simply in dark robes with an inquisitional icon hanging around his neck resting above his robe.

"You've certainly come prepared." he comments after briefly looking you over. "Come this way." he states with a hint of a sigh before turning to travel down the dimly lit hallway. As you follow him the servo skull follows the last of you but keeps a respectable distance. High above you you're barely able to make out murals depicting the various verdicts carried out on convicted mutants, aliens, and heretics alike. Their fates reaffirm your conviction to the Emperor and his extension, the Inquisition itself.

After turning at two junctions you come to a metal door. "Inquisitor Krawn's office." the man indicates with his hand.

Inside you first see a black table large enough to seat six with nice enough grox-leather chairs around it and a holo-projector built into it. A lumen-globe candelabra sits in one corner flanked by book cases. At the far end are stairs leading to a mezzanine which contains a desk, more book cases and various artifacts which must have some interest to the Inquisitor.

The Inquisitor himself is on the stairs when you enter and walks down. "Welcome to  the Tricorn Palace. I hope you found your visit comfortable although it will be brief." When he makes it to the head of the table he indicates towards the seats. "Go ahead and take a seat, we have a few things to discuss."

Inquisitor Krawn appears to be in his 40's with a scar on the right side of his face and short hair. He wears leather clothing ranging from dark brown to black and has a pistol and a sword on his belt. His face is chiseled like you might expect of a war veteran but his voice is much gentler then it should be.

Kalta kept her gaze straight ahead. There was no hint of fear or discomfort with the brutal depictions of Imperial Justice displayed around her. In fact, there seemed a quiet approval in her posture and body language as she followed with her own belongings arranged neatly in a single travel case. That in any other circumstances she might be the victim of such executions and brutal convictions seeming to be no more than the proper order of things to the woman as she marched more than walked in the aide's wake. The harsh click of her boots ringing out in the silence with a pointed, well drilled lack of subtlety.

Her silence remained stony and deliberate as they were shown into the Inquisitor's offices. Every instinct inclined her to salute the Lord Inquisitor but she restrained herself and seated her with the leave of the Lord Inquisitor. Her seat chosen, once more deliberately, to be as far from her fellows as possible.

'Sina entered the Inquisitor's office with a fierce determination to show no fear or even emotion...but the sight of the room, let alone the man, caused a strong ripple of...something, to run down her spine.  What that was she was not sure but she tried very hard to not let it show.

Compared to the others she was positively dowdy.  The guard flak armour she was wearing had surely be made for someone taller and broader and the signs of the alterations were obvious.  But that aside, her combat shotgun and autopistol showed the signs of well-cared for weapons, and even the stout cudgel that hung by her side did not detract too much from the overall ensemble.

She bobbed a quick knee, not sure at all how this man should be addressed.  She settled for "Your Inquisitorship!  At your service."

The Inquisitor nodded towards Sina while eyeing the group. "Inquisitor Krawn will do."

After everyone was seated he began. "I see you're all suitably armed, that's good. I am, and you as well now, are members of the Ordo Xenos. What that means, if you didn't know already, is that you'll be tasked with rooting out xeno cults, slaying the xeno when able, and collecting xeno artifacts so that we may learn how to best defeat them. One such opportunity may have arisen."

The Inquisitor says a quiet prayer and turns some dials on the holo-table bringing up the Calixis Sector map and zooming in on the Drusus Marches and finally on a Death-World called Vaivis.

"Somehow, or for some reason, Orks have bypassed our fleets in the Expanse and landed on this world: Vaivis. The planet itself offers little beyond its dangerous creatures and various poisons but as you may imagine we cannot let allow these vile green-skins to establish a beachhead in the Calixis sector and so elements of Battlfleet Calixis and several Imperial Guard regiments have been activated to deal with the threat."

"While establishing a staging area utilizing defoliant weapons, a platoon of Haddrack Jungle Fighters has uncovered ruins of a probable xeno origin. They've been ordered not to investigate further and to merely maintain a perimeter. It may be nothing but its worth a cursory investigation. Soon I'll have some men en route who are experts in xeno archeology but they of course won't be landing on the surface if there's nothing worth investigating or if its too dangerous to land."

"Questions so far?"

"Are these ruins known lairs to any of the local wild life? Has any topography been provided via ground scans or orbital surveying, Lord Inquisitor?" the Mutant asked in a steady, calm voice despite the man she was addressing. A hint of abject devotion and belief in his authority evident to the perceptive in her tone. The sort of devotion that allowed one to command her death and the order obeyed gladly and without reservation. One more odd quirk of one who was otherwise condemned as unclean by the greater breadth of Imperial Society... and such a damned soul now serving the very ones that would unmake her when it suited them.

"Only cursory scans have been made of the area. The Imperial Navy has been cautioned against any deep scans in case there's some booby trap that lay within which may be activated by such a scan. As far as local wild life is concerned I have to admit I didn't inquire. Whatever was there has undoubtedly ran off by now."
After he replies he briefly glances at each of you.

"You should be well behind the front and I don't intend or expect you to come into any contact with any greenskins. If you do find yourself about to be embroiled in any direct conflict with the Orks you'll need to contact one of the Jungle Fighter's Valkyrie's and exfiltrate the planet. The ruins, if not able to be recovered, will be destroyed from orbit."

"Understood, Sir" she said, perhaps not as clearly and concisely as the scaley woman but she was quite impressed by her own steadiness.  But then a sudden thought came to her.

"Will...er...will we be able to stock up on ammunition before we get there, sir.  This sounds more dangerous than on our...er...my previous mission."

The Korpsman, since entering the room, had been at attention whether sitting or standing. He had first saluted the Inquisitor upon entry and sat stock-still while listening to the mission. Sina's question was on the Korpsman's mind, though the other acolyte got to it quicker than he due to his hesitation to speak. In the Guard, the Korpsman was expected to be silent and follow his orders, for they were his penance for his people's betrayal. Now, in such an unfamiliar situation, the Korpsman was truly lost for the first time in his life.

"... Sir." #2183 said, a terse attempt to catch the attention of his new 'commander' when Krawn glanced around the table. A pregnant pause filled the time while the Korpsman thought best how to formulate his question. "The greenskins are cowards, easily confused and scared by loud noises and sudden movement. Even a small fireteam such as this can best an Ork patrol." #2183's indoctrination from the Guard was beginning to show. "A simple mortar strike on our position in addition to a proper response from the fire team would be more than effective in routing - if not eliminating - any greenskin patrol we come in contact with. We must not suffer the alien to live. Why are we not to engage?"

The order baffled the Korpsman thoroughly. A war zone he was very familiar with. Not combating the enemies of the Imperium where they existed was... foreign. As alien as the greenskins they might encounter.

"I regret to inform you that some of your information isn't... up to date." the Inquisitor replied briefly rubbing his hands together. "It's important, especially while you've been selected for duty with the Ordo Xenos, that you have the best information. Orks derive a particular enjoyment from combat and a lot of them don't seem to hold any particular ill will towards their enemy: they just enjoy fighting them. Though there are many recorded instances of Orks fleeing when braver men would stand you're unlikely to find them as scared as you presume. If you do encounter a patrol it will likely be between 10-20 of the beasts and thats more then enough to kill each of you many times over unless you have some extreme advantage."

The Inquisitor lets out a sigh, "This information is of course available in the Libarium which I suggest you make a study of after you've returned. Things may change in the field but for now all that's required of you all is investigation. The longer you live the greater you may serve Him on the throne."

Alisha kept quiet as she took her seat and simply listened to the Inquisitor's instructions, she found it a bit odd she was to be sent to investigate Xeno ruins but she wasn't one to question how she was supposed to serve Him on Terra if she was being given clear instructions by someone who was a member of the Holy Ordos.

Alisha smiled softly as the Guardsman spoke, she had some experience with the soldier of the Imperial Guard and generally found it pleasantly amusing to see how they stuck so strongly to what they where told in their Primers. When the Inquisitor said they where serving with the Ordo Xenos Alisha simply blinked a bit as it was not what she had expected, but she recovered herself with a soft shake of her head as she mentally offered a simple prayer to the God Emperor.

If one had blinked, the time between the Korpsman sitting and him standing in full attention with a crisp salute held for the Inquisitor was nonexistent.

"Sir!" he barked, "Redefined greenskin parameters acknowledged and understood!" Existential despair began to creep into the Korpsman's heart. #2183 had been lied to by the Imperial Guard. The Primer was wrong. As the Korpsman's worldview began to shift from indoctrinated to informed, there was a sense of loss that he did his best to overcome with a cold edge. His voice carried significantly less bravado and machismo when he next spoke.

The Mutant retained her piece and absorbed the lesson provided by the Inquisitor. It was neither her place or her calling to question. Merely to take what knowledge was given and act upon it in accord with the wills of the Lord Inquisitor that currently commanded her. The notion remained a corner stone of her beliefs, reinforced only further by the rigorous training and strict doctrines of the Adeptus Arbite.

A question did occur considering the circumstances they would be delivered into.

Confident that he had said enough the Inquisitor watches you all depart only adding "If you have any more questions before you leave the Palace just send a page to fetch me or simply return here."

Stepping back into the hallway you're passed by a few other acolytes, inquisitional attendants, servitors and servo skulls but you can't help but feel nearly invisible. People move around you and don't may you much attention.

Taking a well polished stone stair well you move to the armory one level below as the Inquisitor directed. Behind a metal cage sits the clerk updating a log in a book and many racks of weapons and accessories.

Nearby, two guards dressed in black wielding Locke Pattern boltguns eye you carefully.

Kalta could feel the scrutiny of the Storm Troopers upon her in the halls and the Armoury itself but as ever she bore it. The price of the sin of her continued existence in the moment. She was, however, a useful tool in the moment for the fact that her loyalty and strength of spirit had been proven and in a rare turn had been found truly innocent of the crimes she had been suspect of. Crimes that now boiled down to little more than injury in the line of Duty. Still, one did not suffer the mutant no matter the circumstances as such weakened the whole of Man.

She took quiet inventory of what she felt was needed for the excursion and provided this list to the Quarter master. Her voice as stern and disciplined as before but polite whilst expecting no courtesy in return.

While the guards made others in his party react in less than favorable ways, the men were merely fixtures to #2183. He seemed to take almost zero note of the guards. When it came for his turn to step up to the cage, #2183 curtly and clearly enumerated the equipment necessary for the excursion. His lasgun was slowly removed from its position slung on his shoulder and laid on the counter before him to be taken and returned with a new red-dot sight.

Surprisingly it takes less then ten minutes a piece for each of you to get your equipment requisitioned. The Inquisition, or this armory at least, seems pretty efficiently run compared to dealing with the Administratum in general.

After collecting your requisitions you make your way through lightly trafficked halls to landing platform three. Just as you're arriving you see four men exiting the Arvus lighter that'll carry you into orbit. Refueling tubes are connected to the lighter and outside tech priests offer payers to appease its machine spirit.

"About to head off then?" you hear a males voice from behind you. Turning you see a priest in black and brown robes with a polished bronzed Aquila around his neck. You can only assume he has his hands are clasped together as he has his sleeves pushed together around his waist. He has a sincere smile on his face.

The Arbitrator, disgraced and twisted, almost started at the approach of the Priest. Hands briefly flying into the gestures of the blessed Aquilla before she bowed her head towards the man of the clothe. Her head turning slightly to hide the dis-figuration that crawled up the right of her neck. The weight of kit and armour making it just fractionally easier to do so but doing nothing to hide the brand of both her internment and the declaration of her innocence from the Priest's no doubt perceptive eye.

"We are, Father." Kalta offered respectfully but with that same sternness of the Adeptus Arbite. Her voice striking as surprisingly small and less stern. A hint of her past as a student of the Progenum where the Abbots were cruel by necessity.

'Sina bobbed her head and spoke, almost a whisper; "We are, good father.  Perhaps you would be so kind as to bless us before we go?"

She held up her shotgun and pistol for The Emperor's Blessing.

#2183 made the sign of the Aquila to the Priest before nodding in response to his question. Having always been a man of few words, the Korpsman stood silently in wait for the Priest's response.

Alisha gave a friendly nod towards the Priest accompanied by a friendly sincere smile. "As the Emperor demands, we must go do our duty good Father."

"Yes, of course." the priest unsleeved his hands and made the sign of the Aquila while bowing his head.

"Love the Emperor for He is the salvation of mankind.
Obey His words for He will lead you into the light of the future.
Heed His wisdom for He will protect you from evil.
Whisper His prayers with devotion for they will save your soul.
Honour His servants for they speak in His voice.
Tremble before His majesty for we all walk in His immortal shadow."

Looking up he fishes around his robes and pulls out some glass vials with grey powder inside, each smaller then your pinky finger, and each with cord attached. He makes sure he has enough for each of you and puts the rest back. "I have ashes from Granithor. It should bring you peace should the Emperor see fit to grant you everlasting peace." He offers the ashes to each of you.

#2183 accepted the ashes with an outstretched hand and gave a slight bow in thanks. The Korpsman stepped back and waited for the rest of the party in silence.

'Sina put out a tentative hand and accepted the phial from the priest.  She had no idea what this was all about and determined to ask the others once away from the priest.

"Thanks, Father.  For this and for your prayers."

Alisha bowed low as she removed her helmet so that the Priest could put the vial around her neck. After that she stood up right and put her helmet back on "Thank you for your blessing and this gift Father."

The Arbitrator did not speak but her lips moved silently in sequence with the Father`s prayer. Her upbringing in the Schola Progenum had ensured she had become familiar with many prayers and traditions of the faith. When he offered the ash to her in kind, she seemed hesitant to accept. Another hint of her awareness of her own corruption and unclean nature.

It was only a moment's hesitation, however, and she accepted it with a disciplined thank you and bow of her head as she deposited it carefully within the protective folds of her armoured jacket. It was clear now that she was ready to depart upon the errands of their master with all the tenacity and fearful endurance of the Adeptus Arbite.

'Clunk, click!'

'Sina checked the magazines of her weapons and looked up at the others.

"We right then?  Let's go.  Sooner we get this done, sooner we get back."

"Indeed, let us be about our task." Kalta offered in that same disciplined and harsh manner as she once more checked over her own gear, ensuring each safety was engaged and there was no bullet or magazine in any of the weapons that burdened her form. Her calm and quiet handling of each weapon demonstrating familiarity perhaps beyond her evident years even if those same years had been lived harshly.
