And for his next trick, Stanley can explain regeneration to his mom. :D :D :D

Mind, she seemed to take a catgirl in a sun dress showing up unannounced in her living room in stride.

O-kay, points for dramatic action....

The Traveller:
Run, run run she does. Probably a long distance, like the world depends on it. She parkours if she has to.

OOC: I claim 1 SP for Impulsive, but I spend it for Run For Your Life.

I would point out that the TARDIS was left on the Grand Bazaar.  Strictly speaking, you're going to have to get an aircar ride to get back there.  Or, perhaps, a hang glider.

This is not to try to talk you out of doing this, just to point out that we need a narrative adjustment.  Despite the fun gravity at play here, running back to the TARDIS without some means of flight is going to leave you a Travcake.

For the others in the room, this would be an opportune moment to notice that Kalath seems to have wandered off as you make your next move.

After this current arc, I do plan on travelling to Draconia so that Bluetrav can humbly present herself to Sereth to learn swordsmanship and dignity. I think that Sereth will like this much more dignified Traveller more than smart mouth Blond Trav (although I definitely felt definite affection between those two.)

"Now I understand what you were trying to tell me all that time." Bluetrav is now expressing Sereth traits.

No no, I just want to find them and then we'll run out after them. I just want to use the sensors.

I'll edit to reflect that. TARDIS is staying put. That was never my intention, in fact its's mad dangerous for the TARDIS to be anywhere near the cannister.

Actually my comment was more about the companion who only barely knew the old timelord before they regenerated; and then separated from the regenerated timelord and explaining to someone else about them.

I don't like Davison's era, but I think at least part of it is that, with the exception of Nyssa, he had truly horrendous companions.

The weirdest part was in "Castrovalva", when the Watcher gives everyone a ride home and and the Doctor stays to deal with the mess, then Tegan suddenly decides "nope, I'm better off with the Doctor", despite him being a complete stranger and Castrovalva being obviously not safer than Earth. I think she spent the next few seasons regretting that decision.

The fact is, that only Adric really knew the Doctor for long enough to consider staying with the Doctor post-regeneration. Nyssa at least has the excuse that her entire planet is destroyed. The Doctor was also Adric's best hope of getting back to E-space.

It's never even implied that Tegan's real parents are dead is it? Just 'Auntie Vanessa'? It's been a long time since I watched Logopolis - and even longer since Castrovalva.

I feel most issues with Tegan can be explained by her being a Queenslander. :D

No no, I just want to find them and then we'll run out after them. I just want to use the sensors.

I probably reacted more strongly than needed, as you in fact said that in the first place.  And it's not like this was a particular challenge, because OMNIS already located them and wouldn't have denied you the information.

I guess what got my hackles up was that you introduced this thing which I considered to a fun element but entirely too coarse to be of much practical use, and then rapidly assigned it new powers giving it pinpoint accuracy.  I mean, what can an observatory for all of time and space not find?

So, fine.  You found them, because there's no way this can be hard enough for you to fail.  Proceed.

Well, I could have just called them on the phone, but that would have just entailed using the GPS. This was a little more colorful. Would it have made any difference if I had done it from Trav's own phone, or the TARDIS console? It's not like I haven't located companions using superphones before. The show introduced them, and it's kind of dumb that if the Doctor can erase his presence from the entire c21st Internet with a DVD, that he can't track a companion 's superphone from the TARDIS console (which indeed the Capaldi Doctor has done.) This is one of the differences between Classic and Modern who - it stretches disbelief that an alien super scientist can't manipulate basic functions of wireless technology (that can also obstensibly talk through time.)

Hop, skip, jump.

Grappling hook + ascender rope-gun.

Riding a gravity inversion so that once we get high enough we can fall the rest of the way.

The Traveller may be a Lord of Time, but Smoke Alarm is the boss of space. :D

Anyway, I figure that Sairen won't be staying up at the flying palace and the net, but would find a way down to ground-ish level and continue his journey. So Smoke Alarm would prefer to get ahead and intercept him and Kalath, and she might not have to go back to the palace after all.

But putting it all in Kang is tricky.

Trav has a jetpack in CO! A goofy retro thing. 1st Trav has this steampunk contraption.

1st Trav wanted to *beat* people who urged her to get an anti-grav umbrella. Some TravFans said it was a subtle 1st Trav call out when the Doctor said to Clara, 'you are no governness!'

And thus fan speculation begins. Is Gaiman writing the episode? Is it The Corsair under the Chameleon arch? Is the Mathematician or Tangent of 90? (Two RIFTS Time Lords - categorically not, since the current showrunner didn't write for the old RIFTS show and isn't familiar at all with either character, but that won't stop the fanbase from speculating) a prior incarnation of Trav? The Master? Smoke Alarm's long lost brother? Kaltha's new boyfriend? Who knows? #whoissairen

Fans haven't gone this crazy since the whole STANLEY IS THE MASTER craze back in 2015 and all those Youtube videos of Stan discovering a fob watch and then Regenerating and stealing Sweet Boy. "The drumming!" He can hypnotize people. It's obviously The Master!"

That was the weird thing about Tennant's doctor going on so much about how the Master had had a trick for hypnosis - only the Delgado-Master really had a gift for that that went beyond what is accepted as doable. From memory the Ainley-Master had a version of it which was about on the same level as a stage magicians; but Delgado had one where very few people could resist it. I don't mind if they want to bring that back; but let's be honest in that it's not a trick he's used for a very long time.

That's the reason we were making the joke - it was such a distinctive schtick that hadn't been used by anyone else that I at least had imagined fandom repeating gifs of Stan side by side with Delgado hypnotizing people, hours long videos "proving" that Stan was The Master and a tearful Blake Lively pleading with a maddened, angry Stanley locked in the TARDIS. "It's just the two of us now! We're the only ones left!" a la The End Of Time.

While it would have been amazingly cool if Stan really was the Master (so many feels!) the price would have been too high - we would have lost Stanley Newton, the heart and soul of ATTT.

Re: OOC: Clarifications and Chatter: Four To Doomsday

I was very disappointed by Gary Russell's 12th Doctor novel Big Bang Generation with Benny. It was originally intended to feature River Song, and was rewritten to Bernice Summerfield, and it shows. D:

As for the novels, they're hard to get now, unless you get lucky in a library or second-hand bookshop. Her first one, Love and War is a great introduction to a young Benny. Otherwise, anything from Lucifer Rising to Happy Endings (the wedding special!) is good (her earlier novels aren't good and don't serve her well). She pops in and out after that, primarily Return of the Living Dad, Shakedown, and The Dying Days.
http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/New_Adventures
Benny's spin-off New Adventures (or rather, the NAs just continued without that Doctor chap) are generally very good, but I haven't read most of them yet.
http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/V...field_New_Adventures

Shakedown and the original Human Nature were reprinted a few years ago. Plus, Big Finish have redone some as audios.

Yeah, changing Ace was a bad move. Maturing her for the maturer range wasn't necessary, given the previous books handled her just fine. Bringing her back as soldier Ace was some weird idea of editor Peter Darvill-Evans that everyone was saddled with, then she was flanderized further. Soldier Ace does grow on the reader, and Set Piece heals her for her exit, but it would have been better just making a different character. The NAs in general had a thing for space-age soldier-like companions, with Roz and Chris following soon after.

I think this only applies to Trav's player, but check if your local library gives you access to Hoopla (www.hoopladigital.com).  It's an electronic media outlet that affiliates with libraries, and a good chunk of Big Finish's early catalog is available for checkout there.

The Bernice Summerfield that they have is later stuff, oddly, I think because of BF contractual issues.  Still, it is a great source for legal and free Big Finish that provides a lender's fee back to the company.

EDIT -- Just remembered.  Those same issues mean that while you can buy early Benny from Big Finish, it would have to be as CDs.

You realize, of course, that all they had to do to populate this scene was to post several anonymous tweets giving an address and the directions "Arrive in costume" and "Be prepared to sign a release and walk in circles."

Getting three Grel enthusiasts to show up was, if fortunate, perhaps not wholly unpredictable.

Actually, new who has been quite fond of CGI, relatively speaking. Classic would definitely be extras. So the question is, did Always Time to Travel get a nice big budget like Doctor Who, or is it stuck to 80s effects?

Re: OOC: Clarifications and Chatter: Four To Doomsday

The RIFTS show had cheap 90s style bad CGI.

I think ATTT would have BBC Cymru levels of budget - some big extravaganzas, but mostly small sets and locations.

In my headfanon, ATTT is shot in Toronto, with occasonial trips to London and some US cities.

Travcanon fact - one of the reasons that the BBC did the Tatsunoko/Macross partneship was to save money, because animation is generally cheaper than live shooting and the 2nd Traveller was more popular than Mulgrew's Marshall (who was a minor villain in Dr Who at the time.) And lolwut continuity.

Travfans are still trying to find out who in BBC licensing OK'ed one of their characters appearing in a giant robot anime and what they were smoking.

I want to follow up this end of the universe thing that the Corsair left for Trav. If I need to do that away from the group so as not to impinge on the current adventure, that's fine, but Trav *did* die for it (the entire trip to Khestartes Delta).

Also, remember this -

55 CANCRI THREE, HUMANIAN EPOCH, FIRST INTERSTELLAR AGE, MOON OF STORMS
EARTH, EOCENE EPOCH, SOLAR MAXIMUM AGE, WEST AUSTRALIA REGION
EARTH, HOLOCENE EPOCH, HUMAN PRE-INDUSTRIAL AGE, EAST ASIA REGION

We have unfinished business.

We've already been to west australia. The Holocone epoch is the current age on Earth. That might be our Shao Lin Temple/Ancient China adventure. And we know from Fortuna that at least Stanley has a future appointment on the Moon of Storms.

My reading of the dialogue was that these were the three time periods to which the Mailman was transmitting to. Gary, please correct me if I am wrong in regards to this.

If this is indeed the case, we have three potential Dalek rebirths to deal with.

Even if there are no Daleks on the other end to receive the data, Trav has to make sure. Further, Time Lord secrets can't be allowed to fall into the hands of anyone, much less the Daleks.

Yes, this was the multiple-choice set of destinations from the Mailman's transmission.  It was not an indicator of three separate adventures, though.

The Moon of Storms was later brought up as part of the information Trav found on Racallan the Mad.

My recollection is that Kalath / Sereth's player was not in favor of a wuxia epic.  It's true that we haven't done a (human) Earth historical adventure, which probably would be fun before this whole shooting match ends up.  Less difficult to finesse now that Sereth has left the team.

Not to freak anyone out too much, but I am starting to think in terms of working toward a conclusion for ATTT and moving on to something new.  I'm not in a rush and given the pace the game moves at, this probably means a good long time yet -- this is more "past the midpoint" than "almost over".  I'd definitely like to have you all back for whatever comes next.

It feels to me as though the Draconian adventure was pretty feudalistic Japan. Not so much kung fu perhaps; though Smoke provided a fair bit.

I would quite like a historical story though - something truly historical; so not 'feels historical because they're effectively in a post-apocalyptic future' Not saying there can't be aliens; but they should be definitely not belonging. I know this feels a bit weird for me to say as both my characters have been about as inhuman as you can get without being a timelord; but still.

Wild idea-mongering:

"My Fair Kang" in Edwardian England. :D

Trav likes Americana, so mayhaps a western, with arrowguns at high-noon. Or a Civil War era story. I like the story of Kate Warne, first female detective, spy, and Pinkerton, who saved Lincoln from assassins on a night-long train ride in 1861, inspiring the Pinkertons' "We never sleep" motto and female eye logo.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kate_Warne

I've also long wanted to see the disappearance of Alexander the Great's fortune, already stolen by the roguish Harpalus, from the Parthenon in Athens in 324 BC as a classical-age heist movie. But that's a long reach to something very obscure.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harpalus

Looking back at our visit to Woodstock, I remembered a plot-hook I slipped into a flashback.
Smoke Alarm:
Fountain of Paradise Square, Paradise Towers
Lots of ticktocks later...

Meanwhile, Smoke Alarm traced the letters with a finger, sounding out the words she knew. 'Pol-ice telly-phone... It's a talkiphone box!' she exclaimed in surprise and awe, more for what she felt than what she read. The box vibrated, hummed, like a refrigerator, but somehow she knew this was something more, like something alive. She realised the sign was on a little door within the door, and she prised it open. Sure enough, there was a telephone inside. Smoke Alarm pulled it out. 'All oldster-looking. But it's icehot somehow. I like it.'

'Po-lice, office-rs – it's a Caretaker thing, I don't like it.'

Curious as a cat, Smoke Alarm fed in a Kroagnon coin, put the handpiece to her ear, and turned the rotary dial. 'How-you-do?' She heard voices, she whispered back...

Suddenly No Smoking slapped the handpiece from Smoke's hands. The handpiece fell to the end of its cord, dangling and clattered against the door. 'No ball-games, no fly-posts, no ringing!' she hissed. She thrust a finger at the words on the sign, below "Advice & assistance obtainable immediately." 'Outlook! "Officers and cars respond to all calls."'

Who did Smoke ring? What did she say? What did she set into motion that day? :D

I found her in research for my Victorian detective, named Penny Dreadful, for a Supernatural game, and made her her idol. I like her, I think she needs more attention. And a movie, because that's what attention is these days. :) The term "private eye" is based on the Pinkerton logo, which was based on Warne.

By your request then. I'll have her as someone that Trav probably heard of but never met. In fact, Trav may have avoided her because of the risk to history. One of poignant pieces of the Trav-Lincoln relationship was that she knew when he was going to end - if Warne knew it, then she'd certainly act to save Lincoln, whose death is a fixed point in time.

Sorry it's been sparse here, folks.  I'm still trying to wrap my head around what comes next.  In part that's because I'm searching for the starting point, that is, what Trav and company want to accomplish next in the abstract sense -- you're kind of at loose ends without an obvious objective to move on to.  Some inter-character discussion of that might help your GM out.

Trav knows exactly where she wants to go next - what she literally died for. I don't know if -you- want to do an adventure around that. But she literally gave her life for the Corsair's Last Gift.

A minor detail is whether or not Sairen comes along. An ethical issue that Trav is bouncing around is whether or not to give Sairen his memory back, if such becomes available. Trav is thinking that his memories may be at the end of the line.

OK, we have 3 trip possibilities -

1) Deal with the Corsair's Stuff. I'm kind of wanting to let that sit just a bit, till after the next trip.

2) The Warpsmith's of Phaidon and the Moon of Storms. The work of Raccalan The Mad we uncovered from Khestartes Delta will lead us here. I'm most eager to do this.

3) Some other trip to where you guys want to go. There's been talk of doing a historical thing.

Thoughts?

I'm not too fussed on what we do next. TBH, I'm not really following the metaplot, but only because Smoke Alarm doesn't have much involvement in it. If we have some key metaplot points we to collect, then by all means, let's get to them, so long as it's not all collecting the metaplot points.

I'm more interested in varied settings (historical, modern Earth) and genres (e.g., a haunted house story), and setting Smoke Alarm loose in them. So I'd pick #3 but if #1 or #2 can fit in #3, that's good for all of us.

Smoke needs to pull Traveller aside for a private conversation at some point when we're back in the TARDIS.

I don't know, I watch a lot of kung fu / wuxia movies. :D

Is it tacky to send Michelle Yeoh into one so soon into her tenure as the Traveller? I suppose it is the inevitable concept the fans and media are clamouring for, so the series might as well get it out of the way early. :) Her time in Star Trek: Discovery was disappointingly cut short, which was probably just as well, given how disappointing that series is turning out. It certainly allows her to commit to Always Time to Travel.

*

Anyhoo, maybe we should have a preferential vote to decide? I favour late-19th-century Hong Kong (for Kang Fu action), followed by 17th-century Mexico (this is the pirate one, right? Smoke can certainly swashbuckle), and early-21st-century London. But I'm good if there's something others much prefer to do.

Closer to China, Jet Li's Fearless and the Once Upon a Time in China series, Jackie Chan's Drunken Master II, and Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury also circle the era and location. However, despite Hong Kong being at the centre of a wuxia movie industry, there seems to have been rather few actually set in Hong Kong's past. The main ones in late 19th-century Hong Kong are Jackie Chan's Project A and Project A Part II, which are rather fun.

Re: OOC: Clarifications and Chatter: Four To Doomsday

A piece of fan fic drabble:

She was brought into the large ampitheater. In their finery, the assembled colleges of Gallifrey looked down upon her.

She, the renegade, wasn't dressed in the burnt orange robes of her house, Prydon - she was instead wearing a white blouse, a red tie, a brown vest, and a pleated skirt with flat shoes. She looked at the assemblage defiantly.

Borusa, Lord President of Gallifrey, clacked his staff against the floor thrice. "The assembled colleges are here to judge the renegade known as the Traveller. The sentence has been decided - exile to Earth, of R-Space, for 100 years. In accordance with tradition, however, you will be allowed to address the assembly in accordance with the ancient traditions."

"It was your interference that enabled a primitive culture to leap ahead of their technological development by 1,000 years. Your actions directly contributed to the bio-organic technology known as Robotech to be thrust into the hands of a people who were not prepared to use it. Your hands were involved in the near-genocide of the terran people of M-Space, and their relations, the Zentraedi. Your actions draw the species known as the Invid to that world, bringing about what you had tried to avoid. You have gifted these people with 4 Robotech wars."

"I, as the Lord President, ask - what do you have to say for yourself?"

The youngish looking, somewhat chubby, black haired woman coughed and cleared her throat.

"I did it. Yes, I did. That's in the record."

"Sure, the Robotech Master, the Invid Regent - they're just some local tyrants in another universe. I could have just gone home."

Her cheeks were growing red as the anger was rising in her.

"But if I don't stand for the defense of people's choices, loved ones, and lives, then I'm a hypocrite, just like all of you. If I hadn't intervened, they would have found Zor's ship. That Earth would have become a slave colony so much sooner. I'm guilty simply of giving the locals a gun so they could defend themselves with. And they won their wars, not me. I just gave things a kick at the beginning. I won't even go into the Krayloss, and how they might have combined Robotech with vortex technology."

"I don't just protect people, I protect their choices. You don't. That's what will always make me better than the bunch of you."

Borusa merely hmphed at the girl's words.

"As a Time Lord of considerably greater years than you, Travellendatura of the House of Prydon, a warning - you may find yourself one day regretting those words."

He clacked his staff again, three times, as she was lead out.

I have been thinking about why Kismet wouldn't want Sairen here. I thought that it was because Sairen is just hired help, meaning someone else can pay him more to target Kismet later and she already (timey-wimey) know it will happen. But that doesn't really fit with how easy Sairen was convinced to help us for the good of the universe.

I also have an alternative cover story, though I don't think it is the first thing Stanley would think of.

Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
There is an Asylum for Europeans in Hong Kong that has only been open a year or two at this point. They didn't really treat anyone, just calm them down enough for them to be transported back to Europe. Stanley could pretend to be a professor specifically summoned for one hard to treat patient?

Regarding the cover story for Sairen and Stanley:

I'd like to go with Sairen and Stanley being here to scout out Hong Kong for a firm trading in wine and spirits. So they'd be competitors of the historically real Messrs. Caldbeck, Macgregor & Co (Est. 1864).

Yes, something medical would make more sense for Stanley, but this would be easier for Sairen and I think it'd be more fun.

I'm not sure. I live in central Sydney so I was either one of the first, or one of the last as Sydney -should- have a strong internet connection.

I actually am suspicious of my provider; but it's in my father's name and he's locked us in to a two-year contract as it was a birthday present. They're also our phone provider and it is constantly providing static and making it impossible to hear people on our landline, or dial out on it.

I still think we should have a discussion on what to do regarding this adventure. A couple of posts back there was some talk about aborting or retooling this adventure, then we had a couple of posts and then this hiatus. In my opinion (not that I have a lot of PbP experience), this could be a symptom that something is wrong and if a couple of posts in the next of couple of days would only lead to another hiatus, we might be better of aborting/retooling this adventure. Especially since I have a feeling that finishing this adventure would take quite some time. (though like I previously said, I am enjoying the adventure)

I agree. While Stan and I are getting into it, it doesn't seem to be doing anything for Traveller and Kalath. And I know from experience as a GM that a lack of player participation hurts a game and the GM's interest. So I'm for whatever we need to do.

Maybe a separate side of the adventure is set on the enemy space-ship or something. But I don't want to use "The Stones of Blood" as an example. :)

Re: OOC: Clarifications and Chatter: Four To Doomsday

It is kind of on me for letting the game hang for a couple of weeks, particularly as Stanley's player has been gamely gumshoe-ing along on his thread, but I will say that there's a lot of truth in what Smoke's player suggests, that inaction feeds inaction.

We're still kind of at a stage in this thing that the PCs aren't provoking direct reaction, so that has left me waiting for the PCs to put their own plans into motion -- we're not quite at the Raymond Chandler, "have a man come in the door with a gun" place, although to some degree that was where the goons beating up Sai Yuen came from.

I don't particularly want to just drop it and come up with something else, in part because I do have something cooking that isn't *just* a Hong Kong cinema pastiche.  It might be a little while (even at typical rates of posting) before that would happen, though.

I don't think that's really necessary.  If you want to go on to the Exchange and investigate there while the other group proceeds, that's perfectly feasible, and I'll proceed to a post that places you there.

I would say it's also down to the other group to start off putting the TARDIS bait plan into motion if they're going with it.

It is meant to intimate that the leader sees through it, yes, and thus that he's not stupid, nor shy about letting Smoke Alarm know that he isn't.  Generally speaking the semi-disguise has been working just fine.

On the other hand it probably also means that the guy is tending to underestimate Smoke Alarm, even before one gets into Smoke being monstrously effective in her sort of physical conflict.

quote:
Also, who's the two? Traveller is currently inside the TARDIS. I presume it's just the two sailors?

Yes, he meant O'Rourke and Freeman.  The owner of the cart is present and is actually driving it, but the leader of the Gentlemen didn't count him -- he likely figures that the guy isn't likely to be a factor, whether because he's as intimidated as most of the locals by the gang, or because he's old and doesn't look like much of a fighter.

Middle America (United States) or Middle America (Americas)? I guess the latter would be even more of whirlwind tour than the first.

I remember that game :). Though it seems like I have forgotten a lot of the details. Like that it went on for 23 pages before dying out. I thought it had only been eleven or twelve at most.

Also, I'm sure that Jodie Whittaker's debut will energize us while seeing how well the actual BBC can do a female Time Lord! "Been there, done that baby."

I need a little bit of time to think about that, but I definitely want to follow up with the whole Warpsmithd of Phaidon thing, what we visited River Song about. I mean, Trav only did burn a regeneration for that stupid book. Not that I regret anything - Khestartes Delta was Trav's Caves of Androzani, it was that good.

It also seems as that we have an appointment at the Moon of Storms.

I really want to visit the Chamber of Time Unwrought.

I need to review that episode all the way back in 2013. I (the player) always wanted to know who was trying to hack Trav's work when she and Stanley first met and we cured all of those people of Temporal Backlash.

The problem with that is that using Discovery pictures makes it feel like Trav is doing Star Trek cosplay ;)

But there are enough great images of Yeoh out there I can fake it. One of my intentions was that this Traveller is a touch more classy than 5th Trav was - 5th had a thirft store aesthetic, while 6 could actually look great in Coutre.

For me at least, I'd say a bit of both. I was very busy at the start of the week, but also (and I admit this is more my fault as a player) didn't really know what I could/should post to move things forward. If I hadn't been so busy, I might have come up with something that was a an action and not just a reaction/emotion.

Atmosphere is working. We know something is wrong, but nothing so far has shown how bad it is... if it wasn't for the message it could have been a drill.

I just realised. I set Smoke Alarm's home era as the late 26th century. That was originally to line up with another PC in a previous game, though "Paradise Towers" implied some time after the 21st, but I've built on it with more references and continuity since. And now we're in 2571, the late 26th century.

Smoke Alarm shrugged, not too worry-warted by Kalath's playing hooky and kind of wondering why she wasn't off doing the same thing. But nope, she had to be the Sereth now. 'She can outlook for herself.' she decided, footing after Traveller. She had to outlook for Traveller.

:D

Also, she's now back in her own time-zone, more or less, and that's a traditional opportunity to depart the TARDIS and go home in the classic series...

Presumably I should replace her with a honourable noble warrior sort. :) I have one I'd love to play too.

Mostly? :o

Would the telepathic circuits be useful in finding out where Vinsen's been? We can get him  to touch the panel / stick his hands in goo, and let the TARDIS read the memories and find the coordinates.

Also, I say mostly because nothing is for certain with the TARDIS, and Trav doesn't fully understand the phenomenon.

Trying to Psychic something is a Resolve + Awareness check.  It appears that this is an equivalent roll for either Trav or the TARDIS.  Getting actual navigational help would likely involve the TARDIS.  On the other hand, relevant story details would probably be better searched out by Trav.  On the gripping hand, why choose?

I'm personally not fond of the Hands In Goo aesthetic; as I've only recently rewatched The Brain of Morbius my suspicion would be that the "mind-bending" apparatus in that story was an early version of telepathic circuit pickup (and perhaps if the TARDIS was in the loop it could put images up on the holo-dome) but you do you.

Please do give an idea of what you're looking for so I can fashion something simpler that Vinsen's entire backstory.

Re: OOC: Clarifications and Chatter: Four To Doomsday

Not necessarily but maybe?  I hadn't been feeling particularly burned out, but in a lot of ways I tend to run this game on reactive creativity -- I tend not to do threats breathing down the PCs' necks until a scenario is well under way, as a lot of what I like about Who is seeing the characters engage with where they end up.  And very often the central trouble is going be fairly vaguely formed until the players have got their hands on and start to spin theories to steal....

I'd love to be doing something in Cortex+ Heroic (I had immense amounts of fun with a long running Marvel game I was in), or various other systems that I find shinier than DWAITAS.  Though that might be a case of itchy feet over games I'm not running, rather than lack of opportunity to play.  And neither really overrides my wish to bring this game to the sort of conclusion I imagine for it.

Do we actually have collective interest in resuming, or is it time to shake hands all around and officially call it?  I ask this mainly because it feels like we've done a couple of stalls and attempts to move again, and for whatever reason they have sputtered out.

Alternatively, any interest among this group in starting up a different game?  We've had a great group here over the years, but I wonder if some of us are just burned out on this game in particular.

Careful Trav - don't get suckered into starting a new game when you're out of work, and then realise you don't have time once you do start.

In the spirit of keeping it going though - if you do run Star Wars, as that is probably overall more popular, make it an era with a lot of room for you to do your own stuff in.

Re: OOC: Clarifications and Chatter: Four To Doomsday

Hope your employment challenges will be short lived.

On Star Wars: it was a short stint of a Star Wars PBP I played in last year that opened my eyes about how well suited PBP can be to playing a non-verbal or semi-verbal character; AKA, Solving the Wookiee Problem.  The system we were using was a light system with semi-random character creation, and what I came up with in the initial, random portion shouted, "You really want to play a Wookiee," so I did.

Turns out that what can be cumbersome or belief-straining around a table, when you're playing a character that some portion of your fellow PCs shouldn't be able to perfectly understand, can be pretty fun to finesse with PBP, as you generally have a choice of approaches to communicating.  For something where you're just conveying an emotion, you can just go with bellowing, or pouting, or whatever.  Where you're trying to suggest a plan, it can be entertaining to go into how you're miming to get across the gist.  And when things are just too complex, you can go with describing the inarticulate noises you're making, but convey the actual content in something marked up to denote that it's you're actual meaning, while leaving the other players to decide just how much of that they got.

The flipside though is that it can still be hard to express a character's personality, unless they're written with really good interiority. With Smoke, her verbal expressions were weird and sometimes it was hard to get personality and feelings across through that, while I didn't get deep into her innermost thoughts like I do with other characters, as they would be, if anything, even weirder. OTOH, I played her as saying everything and anything that was on her mind and usually found ways to convey that, so I was satisfied with how she turned out.

Hey folks, I hope everyone is well. I just binged Doctor Who: Flux, and I thought it was pretty good. In my headfanon, the Grand Serpent is an old enemy of the 1st and 2nd Traveller - he seems to be the kind of mid-level villain that was just a speedbump for the Doctor but would have been an impressive villain for our Timelord in her pre-Time War days. I also found Swarm and Azure to be entertaining villains. The big army of companions I found to be really enjoyable. I loved ALL of the guest companions.

So, I just finished rereading the entire play.

My god Sereth rolled badly. Especially for fighting rolls.

Kalath actually generally rolled quite well; and she rarely really blew a roll that shouldn't have been an issue.

With GMs/Players I know I'm a lot more open - mainly skill-based games - but games I have experience in (other than this one) are:
DnD up to and including 3.5 and Pathfinder 1E
Buffy RPG from Eden Studios
Shadowrun - not sure which edition I have
Star Wars Saga edition

Might be some others that slip my mind currently; but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

If you get something going I'd be up for joining in, depending on what it is.

I got distracted by something today and ended up reading through a chunk of the game from its RPGnet incarnation, with the Traveller & Stanley attempting to prevent the interstellar U.S. election from being hijacked.  Good times.

Yes they were!

What do you like? I want to run Mage The Awakening of all things, or some Star Wars (FFG, although I could be talked into D6 or D20 Saga Edition.)

Also, if you *ever* run Dr Who again, I am down, Trav or a companion or whatever.

Gosh.  There are so many games out there, and so many that you can get digitally for what is effectively a song.  Humble Bundle / Bundle of Holding are a drug.

Mage is something I've never really grokked well enough to get into, alas.  Star Wars could be a thing.  I think that what I need is a pitch to get the wheels spinning; if there's an idea that sounds good, I imagine it would be easier to find something mutually agreeable that it could be run in.

I suspect I'd have to get over Who burnout to really enjoy running a game again.  Chris Chibnall defeated me.

I'm not particularly enamored of D6 games - part of the thing for me of Saga (which may be true of the more recent versions as well; but not of West End games) is the ease of many different races/character classes. From my recollection, West End games also really makes the difference in power levels of Jedi and non-Jedi even more apparent.

Suspect you'll also find it a lot harder to find anyone else to fill out the party if West End games is your system of choice.

I like D6 better myself, and D20 is a lot easier to make one's character badly in, but I certainly see the point about which system would draw better.  (I like FFG best of them all, but it's both the least accessible and the clunkiest to run online I suspect, since each and every roll is a potential player-GM negotiation about the outcome.)

Shrug.  It's not like the flaws of DWAITAS kept us from having fun with it.

Star Worlds isn't actually set up to use moves, PBTA was just the basis for character stats and rough resolution of actions.  In any case, I just brought it up in case you thought something simpler might be better to use.

As I believe willvr gave a hard pass to FFG (and I think using it for PbP could be a mess) I think the best option all around is Saga.

I haven't given a hard pass to FFG, I just don't know it, at all.

I think the issues with Saga are overall not that bad with good players - much like the various DnDs; a lot better if your focus is RP rather than hack and slash. I think West End is overall better; but I do think the difference between a Jedi and non-Jedi is massive - which is kind of the point of it; whilst Saga makes an attempt to make them balanced. Whether you want that is a different question.

Re: OOC: Clarifications and Chatter: Four To Doomsday

I thought Davies was the full showrunner going forward.

It's such an ugly move. First, it makes Jodie Whittaker's Doctor look so poor (and Chibnall already handled her so poorly) that RTD has to come back and rewind four Doctors to the most popular one. He wouldn't show Tennant in Whittaker's costume (which is hardly feminine), which loses a sense of handover and continuity and Whittaker's legitimacy, and he's resetting the series to how it was in his era when he left, which effectively dismisses all that followed him. He looks like he doesn't trust that Gatwa can be introduced on his own terms, but needs a handover from Tennant himself. But between Chibnall and the prospect of Davies 2.0, I really have no hope for liking this. I know I'll watch the first episode, but after that, I'll probably give up completely. Gatwa's most likely going to be another Tennant-type Doctor, which I'm sick of.

I'm going to be cautiously hopeful, because I originally thought that both Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi were going to be awful, and they were amazing. I just hope Davies doesn't pull a George Lucas on us.

Bringing back Tennant may have been the only way Bad Wolf productions could have sold the show to the BBC

In the Traveller fake franchise history, I like to think that COVID and Michelle Yeoh's schedule put the show on indefinite hiatus and the journeys of the 6th Traveller and her companions are being depicted in comics, anime, novels, videogames and of course RPG supplements. I mean, considering what a big hit the 5th Traveller sourcebook was, it makes sense!

The announcement of a settlement between Harmony Gold and Tatsunoko have fans clamoring for a Robotech/Macross-Traveller crossover. Rumors of a new series of 2nd Traveller OVAs by Satelight (the producers of Macross Frontier and Macross Delta) abound. Trav Fandom freaked out when the 2nd and 5th Travellers appeared as NPCs in Super Robot Wars 30, in the RIFTS downloadable DLC! Voiced dialogue from the actors who play Stanley, Smoke Alarm, Sereth and Amanda is included as the player and their league of giant robots face the Krayloss empire and the Master. The interactions between the 5th Traveller and mecha heroes like Koji Kabuto (Mazinger Z) and Char Aznable (Mobile Suit Gundam) are said to be gold, done by Blake Lively!

Re: OOC: Clarifications and Chatter: Four To Doomsday

Yeah, I realised after I posted I didn't make it clear. My issue is that Gatwa should be the fourteenth. Putting aside for a moment the argument about whether bringing back Tennant is good or not (Gatwa is filming the Barbie movie and publicity for that; so may not have had time to be the main Doctor by the 60th), calling Tennant Mark 2 the actual fourteenth doctor is horrific, in my view.

For me, overall, I haven't enjoyed the modern series, and I now watch it more because my partner and child like it rather than any need to see the next installment. I have not been enamored of RTD's desire to be a romantic hero; and so for me the best era was Smith. Capaldi was pretty good in that regard for most of his run; and it's easier to ignore hints in regards to Capaldi/Clara than it was for RTD-era Doctors. Also not thrilled with RTD's hints that he wants to do a multiverse - and not being able to watch it anymore on ABC hurts, as I don't want to pay for Disney streaming service considering I'm not really into much of what they currently do.

So whilst I am enjoying the fact that more people get to enjoy Doctor Who, I am more looking forward to my new(ish) copy of the Abominable Snowmen DVD than any future stories, and that is disappointing. I'm even watching Trial of a Timelord at the moment.

Well, Michelle Yeoh being the Traveller makes absolute sense in the world of the imaginary franchise. She certainly earned her Oscar. In my headfanon, her two seasons on Always Time to Travel certainly informed her stunning performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once. Of course, Trav Fandom is losing it's collective shit, with Blake Lively sending out congratulatory Tik Toks to Michelle, saluting with a fedora.

Probably would have enjoyed it more without knowing the basic twist around Beep the Meep going into it.

Everything related to Donna and RTD making a fix-fic out of the stuff that people have been criticizing him for since 2008... I get the impulse for it, and at least the basic idea of why remembering didn't immediately kill her was clever enough.  But it's not something that I was really thrilled to revisit, and my overall response is "Okay, now can we just be done with this?"

Overall, I think I'd rather have launched straight into the Fifteenth Doctor.  Anniversary, shmanniversary, I'd like to see Doctor Who just be good instead of ceaselessly celebrating how good it has been.

With the same showrunner, same Doctor, and same companion, this is the most backwards-looking the series has even been (as well as an RTD vanity piece) – like it or not, that's not a good place for the series to be.

You know in these parts I usually boost the revival, since that's what brought me in full force to Who fandom. However, I see the Tennant specials as greasing the wheels for Ncuti Gatwa.

The plot was beyond stupid, and the writing was lame, but Tate and Tennant were charming, all the same, and I enjoyed it despite myself.

Shirley Anne Bingham was however a treat. I hope we see more of her.

I think Smoke Alarm would have sniffed out the Meep in like 30 seconds. "Into the trash chute!"

Re: OOC: Clarifications and Chatter: Four To Doomsday

I found "Into the wild blue yonder" a much better written episode than "The Star Beast". It had real heartfelt character development between the Doctor and Donna, had a clever premise, and referenced Flux, which wasn't that bad. I love it when the current Doctor references and has to deal with the fallout of problems of prior Doctors, like when 6Th Trav had to deal with the impact of 5th's sacrifice and her new relationship with the Cheetah virus.

And I love the new TARDIS.

Don't we have a spoiler thread somewhere? Me and my family haven't seen any episodes yet since Capaldi regenerated.
