Re: OOC: Clarifications and Chatter: Four To Doomsday

I don't poke my nose into rpol.net all that often, but I did today.  All sound-and-safe here.

I do miss this game and you good folks from time to time.  Not sure that I've got the spoons to run it any more.

BHFH!

Re: OOC: Clarifications and Chatter: Four To Doomsday

I'm interested in running some sort of SF game here. Would anyone be interested in Star Trek Adventures of some variant of Star Wars?

Great to hear from you Kalath!

Possibly. Depending on system, I might be able to get my kid interested in SW, though I prefer ST.

Yes, I'd be in.  Probably I've got more character ideas in the back of my head for Star Wars, but either would be great.

Sorry, my RP plate is full, so I probably can't. And I'm no fan of Modiphius's 2d20 system used for STA.

Re: OOC: Clarifications and Chatter: Four To Doomsday

I have just checked with my child, and he confirms if it's Star Wars he might be interested - depending on system and various other things, probably including time period as well. He's very heavily steeped in Star Wars lore though; he probably knows more about various facets of Star Wars than I do about Doctor Who - as my expertise tends to be the TV series only.

Careful Trav - don't get suckered into starting a new game when you're out of work, and then realise you don't have time once you do start.

In the spirit of keeping it going though - if you do run Star Wars, as that is probably overall more popular, make it an era with a lot of room for you to do your own stuff in.

Re: OOC: Clarifications and Chatter: Four To Doomsday

Hope your employment challenges will be short lived.

On Star Wars: it was a short stint of a Star Wars PBP I played in last year that opened my eyes about how well suited PBP can be to playing a non-verbal or semi-verbal character; AKA, Solving the Wookiee Problem.  The system we were using was a light system with semi-random character creation, and what I came up with in the initial, random portion shouted, "You really want to play a Wookiee," so I did.

Turns out that what can be cumbersome or belief-straining around a table, when you're playing a character that some portion of your fellow PCs shouldn't be able to perfectly understand, can be pretty fun to finesse with PBP, as you generally have a choice of approaches to communicating.  For something where you're just conveying an emotion, you can just go with bellowing, or pouting, or whatever.  Where you're trying to suggest a plan, it can be entertaining to go into how you're miming to get across the gist.  And when things are just too complex, you can go with describing the inarticulate noises you're making, but convey the actual content in something marked up to denote that it's you're actual meaning, while leaving the other players to decide just how much of that they got.

Re: OOC: Clarifications and Chatter: Four To Doomsday

The flipside though is that it can still be hard to express a character's personality, unless they're written with really good interiority. With Smoke, her verbal expressions were weird and sometimes it was hard to get personality and feelings across through that, while I didn't get deep into her innermost thoughts like I do with other characters, as they would be, if anything, even weirder. OTOH, I played her as saying everything and anything that was on her mind and usually found ways to convey that, so I was satisfied with how she turned out.

That's really great stuff, Gary! Maybe you can share some exceprts? Also, Star Wars is always great,

And of course there needs to be a Kang RP guide ;p

In my imaginary franchise history, I imagine that a branch off from the 3 volume 5th Traveller guide published by Cubicle 7 is Running With Kangs - The Compleat Guide To Paradise Towers for DW:AITAS, that's jam packed with Kang cultural details, NPC write ups, how to mount up a Paradise Towers campaign and stats for our beloved Kang NPCs from the shows.

Re: OOC: Clarifications and Chatter: Four To Doomsday

Amusingly, I've been doing a run of all the Doctor Who DVDs I own with my child, and today we finished watching Paradise Towers.

I really still don't like Mel as a companion, but the story was better than I thought.

Re: OOC: Clarifications and Chatter: Four To Doomsday

Hey folks, I hope everyone is well. I just binged Doctor Who: Flux, and I thought it was pretty good. In my headfanon, the Grand Serpent is an old enemy of the 1st and 2nd Traveller - he seems to be the kind of mid-level villain that was just a speedbump for the Doctor but would have been an impressive villain for our Timelord in her pre-Time War days. I also found Swarm and Azure to be entertaining villains. The big army of companions I found to be really enjoyable. I loved ALL of the guest companions.

Re: OOC: Clarifications and Chatter: Four To Doomsday

I'm doing alright. I'm currently caring for a litter of rescued kittens, which is making me stressed and exhausted, but I love the little things. I keep thinking of Puddy. :D

I haven't seen any new Who since Praxeus; the ads for Flux didn't really grab me. But I have been rewatching Capaldi's last season, which is always good for me.

The trailer for Michelle Yeoh's new movie, Everything Everywhere All At Once, made me think of the current Traveller. :)

I actually haven't seen anything since the end of Capaldi; though that's because my partner was in hospital during that season and didn't want to watch it without her - as she's more into modern Who than I am.

Re: OOC: Clarifications and Chatter: Four To Doomsday

I love all the Doctors, and the divide between classic and new Who is an arbitrary one for me. Since I didnt start my Who fandom until 2005, its all Who, there is no difference for me between Classic and New.

I must see that Michelle Yeoh movie.

Re: OOC: Clarifications and Chatter: Four To Doomsday

So, I just finished rereading the entire play.

My god Sereth rolled badly. Especially for fighting rolls.

Kalath actually generally rolled quite well; and she rarely really blew a roll that shouldn't have been an issue.

I come back here from time to time as well. Did you also read the RPGNet threads?

Great to hear from you, hope you are doing well.

I miss Sereth and Kalath!

I'm actually trying to get back into playing right now; had a recent promotion at work which both increased and decreased my workload at the same time.

I'm GMing one game, but playing in none.
