Chapter 3:  Dancing with the Devil

The whole of the afternoon had been encompassed with a search of the college grounds for the imp who had neatly escaped from the group magic classroom.  The whole effort, it had seemed to Judoc, had been entirely halfhearted.  Firstly, some of the professors had been entirely too engrossed in their studies to help in the search at all and even those who did seemed less than thrilled with the possibility that their search might actually end with finding the demon.  Many of the students helped as well, though the whole effort at the end of the day proved fruitless.  Even now that the students had been chaperoned back to their commons there was no protection left with them - even with the demon on the loose.  The whole situation seemed to be, at least to everyone else, completely unremarkable and given Brother Loke's lecture at the beginning of the school year, perhaps it was.

Judoc himself had spent the majority of the afternoon searching, though in his mind he was replaying the gory scene of the summoning.  He would tweak his spell, or perhaps slightly his aim and with each iteration came rebounding success.  Others, however, seemed to take the whole situation much less in stride.  Elliot Strange, while he did spend the whole of the afternoon searching, seemed morose at the prospect of finding the demon and absolutely horrified at the chance that it would remain hidden despite his efforts.  Now back in the room, Elliot seemed little more than a puddle of worry, spilling over his armchair with an expression of self-loathing slapped across his face.  Giles too seemed less than thrilled with the situation, though his expression was more pensive and less stricken with concern.

Though the hour was now past twilight the whole commons stayed up grouped in their adjoining room with little talking.  Mariana had long ago been escorted back to her own dormitories, but Giles, Elliott, Grobbik, Indrid, and Judoc all sat, each on their own stuffed chair.

Re: Dancing with the Devil

"I'm going to be expelled."  It is the first word in perhaps a quarter of an hour, emanating from the sprawl of limbs belonging to Elliot.  "I caused this whole mess, and now I'm going to be expelled because of that damn spell that I wasn't even casting in the first place!."  He throws an arm akimbo in an attempt for emphasis, though it seems only to emphasize his self pity.  "I'm going to be expelled unless I find and kill that monster..."  Elliot does not seem to react well to his own conclusion.  Instead, he seems to retreat even more into the chair, his face awash with fear and wretchedness.

Re: Dancing with the Devil

"Yes, I think so."  Giles responds after a moment... though he does not seem to notice either the implications of his statement nor the dismay it causes Elliot with just those four words.  "I think our only option is to get the thing tonight.  Simple enough I'd say without those teachers trying to lead us to all of the least likely places..."
