13d: The Dead and Those about to Die

Several moments pass after Giles's question in which Magnus answers only a few dejected words and Finn offers his help, although immediately after he professes his own near uselessness in his current state.  Judoc seems occupied with his scouring of the room and Gustav still lays, utterly unconscious, pushed back into a corner of the room.  The silence dominates for several uncomfortable moments.

"Well, then."  Giles pierces the quiet.  "Just us two then.  Not to worry, we'll be quick with it.  Back before you know it as soon as we catch the wizard and have dealt with him.  If we find ourselves in a scrape we can't manage, we'll run back up too."

And with that, Rondald and Giles head down the steps, Giles with his shield bared, making quick work of the steps though his eyes are narrowed and focused ahead.  "Oh bugger this,"  He mutters, pulling his own glowing pendant from under his shirt, letting it's light spill over the stairway before the two turn the corner and head down to the next landing...

This room too seems mostly dark, with only a few streaks of light pouring through from the eastern wall by way of the arrow slits that speckle each surface of the walls.  This room too is quiet and large like the one above.  Here too, there is a table at the center of the room, though this one is by far smaller, with six large wooden chairs pulled up at interval and an iron candelabra decorating the center.  Stepping slightly into the room and with the help of Giles's light, Rondald notices too several beds tucked back in the corners, a larger one in the northeastern corner, with multiple, smaller cots towards the northwest.  Here and there are smaller furnishings, desks and bookshelves and the like but nothing stirs or hits of their invisible foe...

"I don't see anything."  Giles says nervously, craning his neck in all directions to detect the slightest noise or visual clue.

OOC:  Ok, I'm not sure if I'm jumping ahead of people or if I'm the only one who feels that the questions are a little unresolved, though I've decided to what I think will force some decisions and split the groups.  You are now with only Giles, who is being NPCed by me, which means you get to make all the decisions.  Please write in OOC what weapons you have weilded and what, if anything you took from upstairs apart from the items you have already mentioned (you had left your shield still on the ground in the last post).  Let me know if you want to keep searching here or if you want to head on the staircase farther down.

Snatching up his shield, Rondald follows Giles, pausing only to make sure his crossbow is cocked and loaded, he slings it and readies his knife and shield.

Looking around the room, he finds the light easier to handle than Giles.

[OOC: All good. Basically, he will look around for any powder or anything that might be valuable, but only if it is immediately visible. Otherwise, he will want to catch up with the wizard. Probably best if you roll the sense rolls, as I should not know if I failed! That will also be quicker, as Rondald will want to keep going until he finds either danger, such as the quarry, some powder or something valuable.]

Though the lack of light bothers him much less than Giles, Rondald gives his consent through silence to the extra bit of light the other drags though their search.  After all, knowing their prey is invisible, Rondald cannot help but hope that they will catch anything that still stands within the visible domain.  His crossbow locked and loaded already and slung across his backside, Rondald steps cautiously into the room below them looking for any additional items of help.  Though he is looking for powders, flour and such, he finds that there is little in the way of real baking equipment here on this floor.  However, on the table he does spy two shakers that look to be like those of salt and pepper.

Giles bends his necklace of light around the room, attempting to find some hidden clue, though after looking for several moments, he looks back up at Rondald.  "What now?"  He whispers in a harsh voice.

OOC:  There doesn't seem to be anything you are looking for beyond a salt and pepper shaker on the center table.  You may continue searching or continue on further down the stairs.

"Ground pepper might just make him sneeze...that may help. Lets grab them and keep going."

Rondald checks them to see if they are peppercorns, or ground pepper...then indicates for Giles to continue. Quietly...no need to attract more attention than necessary. He checks the salt too, just in case...and take it as an afterthought, stuffing them into his belt before following Giles down.

Taking only a moment to grab the two shakers on the small table, Rondald turns to continue down the stairwell.

"[Language unknown: Roecur ectta ortantard usec estreaort!]"  Comes a echoing call from the stairs below.

Rondald and Giles glance at each other momentarily...  "Something about getting through..."  Giles murmurs, but Rondald is already off, his knife and shield held protectively in front of him and he can hear the clinking of Giles's chain running behind.

The two head down the next level of stairs, into a room that would be completely dark if not for Giles's light.  Here there are none of the arrow slits like those on the floors above, only a long, narrow hallway that has a series of four doors on either side.  All the doorways are closed.  To their right and behind, the stairs continue farther down.

Rondald and Giles do not stall to search the rooms around them but instead hurry down the stairs one more level.  Even before they step onto the landing halfway down, Rondald can tell the lower floor is much lighter than the rooms above.

As they step out onto the landing it is readily apparent why.

On the eastern wall are five massive windows of pained glass that let in all the light of the early morning.  The room appears to be a living space or lounge of some sort, and there are chairs and small coffee tables which adorn the room along the western wall.  Bye the windows on the east wall there are higher tables with chairs four to a side.  A long, threadbare and scuffed runner heads out into the room from the feet of the stairs and like the room above the western wall has four doors leading to rooms beyond.

As Rondald glances back at the windows, he recalls seeing them from the outside, before the group had levitated up to the top of the tower.

"Must be the second floor then?"  Giles thinks out loud, much on the same line that Rondald had been pursuing.  "Keep going I suppose?"

"As much as I would love t pause to admire the scenery, the idea of stopping him before he calls an army down on us is also appealing..."

says Rondald quietly, continuing down the stairs with barely a pause.

"I am guessing we are about to come upon company..."

He keeps his shield raised and ready to duck out of whatever may be sent his way.

13d: The Dead and Those about to Die

Only pausing for a moment to make a comment, Ronald ducks his head out of the stairway, finding the staircase leading farther down is off to his left and behind.  His steps marked with haste, Rondald takes the steps three at a time, the links of his armor rattling together as the material sways with his steps.  Giles flags slightly behind, his necklace still shining a light, the reflection of which bounces along the walls ahead.

As Rondald turns the corner on the landing, he pauses for a moment, his long knife ready and gripped in his hand.  Below him wait two more of the armored golems standing shoulder to shoulder at the bottom of the stairs.  Like the ones above, these are armored in all steel, with each holding a shield.  The one on the left side holds a spear in his right hand while the one on the right holds an axe.

In the brief moment of stillness Giles catches up with Rondald, his breaths coming fast and deep.  The things below stand entirely motionless, indeed, they don't seem to register the two men's presence at all...

OOC:  You are on the landing halfway down from the floor in the post above.  There is another room below, but most of what is behind is blocked by your downward angle and the two golems standing in your way.  The two don't seem to be taking any action at the present moment.

"More of these things. My knife is pretty much useless against them, as is my crossbow. Perhaps I am best to try to run past them, and as they follow me, you can hit them from behind?"

He looks around the room, evaluating how easy it might be to get past them, or for anything that might work to their advantage, such as steep stairs he might push them down...or a table to cause them to have to go around.

Giles nods along with Rondald's plan.  "It may work, though I am loathe to have you with your back turned to them for long enough for them to hit you...  I'll be right behind, to slash them as soon as you make it through."

Rondald sneaks down a few more stairs, looking to peer behind the golems and search for any obstruction to their path.  Unfortunately, apart from the western wall of the room, which extends from the wall of the stairs as far as he can see in the room, there are no obstructions, other stairs nor tables that seem convenient to trip or impede the foes.  Despite creeping down closer, the golems to not so much as stir...

OOC:  There's nothing really apparent that you could use to trip or get in the way once you are past them.  If you want to try and rush by/between them then roll vs. DX and let me know if you want to use the left side (wall side), between them, or right side (toward the center of the room).  You may take any other action you wish as well, though if you attempt to slam, you don't get your DB bonus for the attempt (I messed this up earlier, bucklers can't be used in a shield rush).

Rondald puts on a burst of speed, lunging himself forward and to the right to squeeze through the gap between the iron-clad magical guard and the wall of the stairwell.  Though the stairs make running tricky, he plows on ahead, his nimble body finding footholds even at top speeds.  As he comes close however the golem, which had stayed entirely stationary as he approached, moves with a fluid motion to block his way, bringing his shield to bear and Rondald cannot stop in time to readjust his course!

Crash!

The golem holds his ground as Rondald's shield makes contact with the Golem's shield, smacking painfully against his knuckles and wrist as it flattens against his body and pushes him sideways until he is wedged against the wall.

"Shit!"  Giles calls from behind him and Rondald can hear the clatter of steel links jumbling together as Giles quickly descends the stairs behind him.

OOC:  I'll get a map up on the next post, but I've been so lacking the past few days that I wanted to just get a post up.  Your evade maneuver against the golem failed and you are now in close combat, wedged somewhat uncomfortably between his shield and the wall.  He isn't holding you there though, so you can step back freely or attempt to shove him away from you if you wish.  The other golem is somewhere around range 1.
You have your shield readied in your left hand and knife readied in your right.  Giles is coming down the steps behind you.  Yes, absolutely you can use a hero point to reroll a dodge, but in that post you weren't attacked so it did not become necessary.  Go ahead and give me 3 seconds of combat.

Now in close quarters, Rondald will drop his shield and attempt to stay so close to the thing that it cannot bring its shield to bear. Attempting to grapple it with the now free hand that once held the shield, he slashes at its face with his knife...

"Guess it is time for plan B Giles...stay so close that it can't use its weapon, and its friend is likely to help by hitting it. Probably best if you target its friend then."

13d: The Dead and Those about to Die

His exertion catching wind in his throat, causing him to bend over and stop his progress with labored breaths, Judoc hesitates at the bottom of a platform taking in the momentary scene before him.  The whole eastern wall is bright with the sunrise, the pained, clear windows stretching across the eastern wall are shining with the dawn.  A carpet runner runs down ahead of him to the end of the room, a bright red that rolls towards the end of the room, close to a number of doorways on the western wall.  He barely has a moment to catch his breath however, when a clamor raises from down below.

Crash

"Shit!"  The voice seems to be Giles's, followed by the clash of steel and grunt of exertion!

Rondald, panicked by the failure of his tactic drops his shield in a trice and grips the golem about the waist, hoping to hold it close enough to defray the danger of its axe.  The tactic works well enough, and Rondald manages to grip the thing about it's torso as his massive buckler is dropped down between their feet, still standing upright as it has nowhere to fall.  The Golem swings its axe crudely, though at these close quarters it would seem, there is no hope of it making a steady hit.

The other golem still could pose a problem, though Rondald keeps his sights on it as it thrusts out with its spear and Rondald makes the half-step down the stairs, retreating behind the other golem's mail armor as the jab clamors off his counterpart's  armor.

His mail ever jangling as he continues down the stairs, Giles lashes out with a brutal sword cut that is blocked at the last moment by the opposite golem, and it lashes out back with a thrust of its spear, yet Giles swats the weapon aside as he swing again with his sword, which catches again at the rim of the the thing's shield, causing little more than a twang at the denting of the metal rim.

OOC:  Judoc welcome to the thread.  You are one story above the violence described above, though you can hear it well enough to understand what is going on.  If the map isn't clear (above) you have to travel to the eastern wall to continue downward.  You are still at half move and dodge.  You have gone through several stories, which are described above, the fourth story being the first additional map, the third being the long corridor, and the second is where you now stoop, winded.

Rondald, you have successfully dropped your buckler and grappled your foe.  The other seems to be entirely consumed at this point in combat with Giles.

Please continue to give me 3 more rounds of combat.

13d: The Dead and Those about to Die

The melee continues in separate but tightly packed frays, with each Giles and Rondald tackling their own monstrosities.

Giles steps forward, swinging his sword in a great arc that again clang!s off the side of the golem's shield while repelling the counter strike of the spear that barks off the face of his shield as it knocks off a shred of the wood planking.  Back and forth the two go, attacking and defending in turn so that even as their sweat is beginning to rise, neither has gained an inch on the other.

Rondald on the other hand, tries to play up his already sizable advantage...  Again the thing lashes out with its axe, though the swing is clumsy and has no chance in the close quarter.  Instead, Ronald takes advantage of the movement to duck his head under the thing's weapon arm sending his body a quarter turn around the monster so that he is now presses against the thing's side.  Seeming to finally recognize the futility of its attacks, the golem swats its giant arm downward as it does a quarter spin, attempting to break the grip of Rondald's hold.  Rondald bites his lip in pain as he pulls his left arm back in, though he takes the opportunity to make an attack of his own, swinging his knife down viciously and connects at the hip, tearing a gash in the armor and cutting through handfuls of the dense, fleshy tissue underneath.  Rondald knows that had this been a man, he would now be on the ground with a woumd weeping blood yet the thing still stands, turning his body to face Rondald again as he brandishes his axe.

Above, Judoc receives no thoughts in return from his familiar, though he has little time to think about that as he races down the stairwell three at a time...

OOC:  A little gain on that post!  Giles and his foe are mostly fighting to a stalemate, though Rondald managed to get a moderate hit to the leg in exchange for losing his grapple.  His maneuvering has put him in the precarious position of being between the two Golems, though the one behind him seems focused on Giles.  Lets do 2 more rounds of action.  Giles, you are just now turning the corner at the top of the stairs in the map, and I'll do your concentration maneuver on the second turn of combat.

Momentarily wondering where Aiah might be, Judo shrugs and continues working his way down the stairs. Although he cannot see her, he knows she is somewhere nearby. Although Judoc is still exhausted from all the spellcasting he has been doing today, he has strength enough to keep going and knows Giles and Rondald will need his help if they are to subdue the necromanced. After all, who better to catch a fire mage than another fire mage?

Focusing on the skirmish below, Judoc targets the golem  currently sparring with Giles as the wizard waits for the right time to launch his fiery missile.

13d: The Dead and Those about to Die

The clang of steel on steel echoes all about the room as Giles battles back and forth with his foe, swinging his sword which clangs over and over again off of his opponent's shield.  Striking back with his spear, the golem catches Giles unawares, skipping under his shield and striking him square in the chest, though mercifully the strike barley grazes through Giles's armor.  Still, the blow catches him mid-swing which foils his aim, causing him to fall well short, swinging past his mark and accidentally hitting his own leg!  The sword tears through links of mail, smarting painfully as it causes a razor thin cut above his knee.

Resetting his defense, Giles bats the next thrust aside with ease and slides his attack slightly down the stairs...

Meanwhile, Rondald retreats slightly backwards into the room, his head turning back over his shoulder to keep an eye on what is behind him.  He manages to evade swing after swing, sliding his lithe body to the side just in time so that the foe's axe never once strikes true.  Rondald retreats two or three steps backwards, but his foe does not give, rushing onward with his shield raised and striking Rondald square in the chest!  Barely keeping his feet, Rondald slashes back with his knife, but the blow is knocked to the side off the rim of the shield, leaving the opponents much the same as they had started several moments earlier.

Several feet up on the stairs, Judoc has conjured another of his flames.  A thin will-o-the-wisp like ball that dances in bright red fire.  Taking aim for a moment, Judoc unleashes the ball when he sees an open shot, connecting directly into the empty space at the golem's faceguard and erupting into a small flash of light.  The golem groans his displeasure, though he readies his spear yet again for a strike.

OOC:  Wow.  Giles is lucky to be alive.  He was hit twice with the spear, and once with his own sword, and somehow skated out with only 2 HP loss.  Thank goodness for armor.  Rondald is now fighting to a stalemate, though retreating backwards into the room to pull the other golem away.  Judoc is five yards away (and three yards up) from the closest golem.  Go ahead and give me another four rounds of action.

13d: The Dead and Those about to Die

Flurries of blows echo in clangs that reverberate off the stone walls, causing a din of real and repeated chaos.  Rondald edges ever backward, attempting again to ploy the steel clad sentinel into close confines where he can profit from his foe's bulky armor and lack of maneuverability.  Rondald reaches out an arm, grasping for a crease in the armor, but his reach is swatted away by the rim of the golem's shield, right as the axe is descending downward to complete his own attack... Rondald is surprised by the move, and though he shuffles backward he is not nearly quick enough to escape the blow, which catches his right arm... one of the few places where Rondald does not wear armor.

Snap!  The axe cleaves through flesh like butter crackling clean into the bone as Rondald shrieks, dropping his weapon as he tumbles backwards towards the ground!

"No!"  Giles shrieks, swatting away his own foe's spear as he retaliates in kind swinging his sword in a viscous arc that cuts deep into the monster near his collar, snuffing out the gleam in his eye as it clatters to the floor, now a useless pile of clay and steel.

"No!"  Giles repeats, but his efforts are far too late to save his friend.  Axe raised over his head, his foe lying stunned and helpless on the floor, the golem acts without hesitation or emotion, driving the axe downward, impacting Rondald in the chest with a blow that easily cleaves the steel links at his chest and crackles the bones of his ribs underneath.  Too stunned to even scream, Rondald simply slips into unconsciousness as blood vomits up and spills across his armor from deep within the wound...

Now standing at the last Golem's back, Giles swings his sword fiercely, though the blow clangs uselessly of an angle of the thing's armor, giving the monster enough time to turn and miss with a swing of his own.  Giles strikes again, the blow foiled by the heavy shield of the golem which raps the sword blow aside.  Giles keeps his own shield up and ready, though its high position proves to be a fatal mistake.  For the golem's axe cuts upwards, hitting Giles at his hip as it slices open the steely links of his shirt all the way up to his opposite breast.  So powerful is the blow that it knocks back Giles several paces before he falls the the floor, his scream dying on his lips as his wound belches torrents of blood which is already beginning to pool at the floor about his hip...

Now facing the stairs again, the Golem glances up, his eyes locking on Judoc who now stands with another conjured fireball, readying himself to throw...

OOC:  Yikes.  I guess that just continues to prove the point that an axe in the hands of a strong opponent is about as fearsome a weapon as you can come up against.  Both Rondald and Giles are now unconscious with life-threatening wounds about 2 or 3 yards into the room.  The other Golem seems to be dead (or disenchanted) at the foot of the stairs.  Judoc, I had you conjure another fireball and aim for two rounds against the Golem that is still standing.  He is definitely aware of your presence, although he hasn't yet taken any actions to head towards you.  He is at a range of 8.  If you wish to continue combat, give me three rounds of combat, otherwise, let me know what your bigger intentions are.

Has Judoc ever been in a more dangerous situation? On the arena sands, facing Thresher, the young mage had been able to cow his opponent into laying down his weapon. Against the demon Agares, Judoc had triumphed due to his superior wits and Raisalter’s spell stone. Now, Judoc’s comrades lay sprawled on the floor, bested by these frankly impressive marvels of spell work, though not before defeating one. Will Judoc run? Will he flee the scene, weakened as he is through spellcasting? Perhaps lead the still-standing golem up to the others where Magnus can finish it off? It would be the smart play here, as tired as Judoc is.

Snarling, the wizard throws his fireball to his left and begins manipulating mana again. A rogue necromancer is still on the loose somewhere, but he hasn’t shown his face again just yet. First, this last golem needs to be decommissioned.

OOC: Judoc will begin casting again - Levitation this time.

Horrified by the sudden turn of events, Judoc hurls his fireball at his last remaining foe, hoping for a miraculous hit.  The projectile does indeed hit the golem at the waist, though it explodes into nothingness against the heavy plate armor, the golem barely noticing the impact.  Judoc immediately starts his meditation for his next spell, though the things actions give him a moment of pause...

The fireball is barely noticed by the golem and though Judoc is sure the thing knows he is there it seems to be ignoring him completely.  Instead, the thing grabs Rondald's ankle in his shield-laden left hand and begins dragging him back towards the bottom of the stairwell, leaving a trail of blood that slicks the stone floor underneath, his right still gripping the blood slicked axe...

OOC:  So to answer your question, Levitation might not really be a great call here, as the ceiling is probably only 10' to 12' and it's hard to be sure that (even if you held yourself flat against the ceiling) that you'd be invulnerable against attack.  The thing that really makes you hold however, is that the golem doesn't seem to be paying any attention to you at all.  It looked at you, recognized you, then is completely ignoring you in favor of moving Ronald back towards the stairs.

Barely aware of his actions, Judoc turns tail and flees...
