Day 17: The Talon of Tiamat

As all of the team's archers finally join in the barrage on the hydra Minmorc decides this is a perfect opportunity for a wager. One by one everyone else accepts the idea and commits 20gp each to the pot.

Minmorc's first arrow hits and punches deep into the hydra's body but the huge reptile doesn’t fall.

While Jurz pulls out a wand to join in the fun his flaming sphere rolls back at the hydra again. This time it hits and scorches the hydra again but the huge reptile doesn't fall.

Raven's crossbow bolt hits too, but the huge reptile doesn't fall.

Moffa conjures caltrops under the hydra but it manages to avoid stepping on one.

Giant Bully shoots his giant bow but only manages to prove that size isn't everything. His giant arrow misses.

Dregz finally shoots his small crossbow, after brushing the hair out of his eyes to line up the perfect shot. His little crossbow bolt punches through a patch of the hydra's thick hide scorched by Jurz's flaming sphere and disappears into the hydra's chest. The hydra goes Aargh, gurgles and falls down, right on top of Moffa's caltrops!

Minmorc's second arrow hits and also punches deep into the hydra's body.

Then Jurz flicks a glob of fire at the hydra from his wand, which chars the ends of the arrows sticking out of the hydra's body as well as scorching its scaly hide.

The hydra's wounds show no signs of healing this time as it lies lifeless on the ledge.

OOC: (Round 7). Main Game Map updated. Actions have been taken in the order posted but if it involved a move action and a standard action then everyone's first part of their action was processed first then everyone's second part of their action. I hope that makes sense. :o)

Stashing his bow in his bag he will fish two platinum out of a pouch. Collecting his spear he will hop off the ledge and will walk over to Dregz, shaking the goblins hand and giving him the coins. Unless someone has other plans he will walk over and stab the Hydra in the heart a couple a times.

"Just one magics on the door. Only a faint magics. One of dem ab-joo-ray-shuns. Dem protection type magics."

He shrugs then grins and trots up the stairs to the ledge to collect the rest of his winnings.

"I scored da biggest miss.  Does dat get me da second prize?" Bulldust asks hopefully.  But, anticipating the likely answer, he quickly pours his stack of giant sized gold coins into Dregz' bag, where they promptly resume their proper size.

The giant bugbear cuts off the hydra's green head and sticks it on his longspear.  "She looks good up dere.  Fink Bzerrk Tmarro will be happy to see her again?""  He searches around the hydra's body for treasure.

Sadly the hydra was not guarding any treasure at all. This Talon of Tiamat fellow doesn't seem to have much idea of how a proper dragon's lair is supposed to look.

So, what next? Moffa is clearly voting to stop here and rest long enough to refresh her spells. Is everyone else going to go along with that?

Day 17: The Talon of Tiamat

Bulldust is ready to sleep and regain some bugbear-magic powers.  He works out when will be his turn on watch, eats something if someone remembered to bring food, but is not interested in trying hydra meat if it's offered.  He pulls up a hydra leg and settles down near Moffa.  He props the spear with Green Head where he can look at her.  He likes her better now she's dead.  (Nothing weird about this, perfectly normal teenage bugbear fantasy.)  He frowns and scratches his shoulder where the bristly bugbear hair is already beginning to grow back after yesterday's full body waxing.  Have to ask Dregzie about that ... he probably knows something about hair removal, being a priest and all.  Maybe Bargriefyuk wrote something about it in da book.  And Jurzie ... maybe he has the secret.  It just seems wrong to be covered in fur ... Green Head has such pretty scales...  He takes out the green dragon scale he found in the pantry downstairs and scrubs it up with a nearby hydra tongue (no, not Green Head's) and polishes it with hydra grease until it gleams.  Then he drills it with that hydra's tooth and threads it on a spare bow string and hangs it around his neck.  He waits for sleep and dreams of storming barricades and chasing elves...

The little goblin grins inanely as he collects his winnings.  Admittedly his single shot was a lucky one (he had his eyes closed) and his victory was mostly due to Jurz's flambeing of the beast, but he's very pleased with himself, nevertheless.

"When we's done here, I'm buyin' der drinkses !" he announces to his tribe.

After all this excitement, Dregz fancies a rest too, and even though he's worried that someone is bound to turn up, he doesn't want to spoil the mood by chivvying everyone to keep going.

"I'll take der first watch,"
the priest volunteers staunchly, fitting another bolt to his crossbow, ready for what comes.

Bulldust secures the door from the Pedestal passage, locking it if he can and spiking it shut from inside.  He sets an alarm at the top of the stairs in the room above, laying his old shovel Vera across the second step down like a trip hazard, but cunningly propping the blade on two empty potion vials arranged such that the vials are hidden by the shovel blade and one will topple off the step if the shovel is moved.

Downstairs he spikes shut the lower door and props his longspear almost vertically against it, set to topple over if the door is shoved from the other side.

He sleeps on the hydra next to Moffa.

Night 17: The Talon of Tiamat

Everyone's preparations work smoothly enough that the team feels they have done all they can to ensure nothing will get in without them knowing it. Everything is quiet and the team enjoys a full nine hours of rest and prayers for those who need to pray for their gods to grant them more spells for the next step in their adventure. There is just enough time for breakfast as well.

During this final stage it is Raven who is on watch and she has stationed herself beside the lower door. She suddenly hears faintly the sound of a voice on the other side of the door. A male voice, she thinks, but she doesn't understand the words. It sounds a bit like when Moffa is saying one of her spells. Raven frantically waves her arms to get everyone's attention and puts her ear to the door - obviously listening.

OOC: Main game map updated. Everyone is at full hit points and all casters have a full complement of spells. Anyone planning to cast long duration spells tonight (tens of minutes or hours duration) before heading further into the depths of this Talon of Tiamat will already have cast them this morning but shorter duration spells will not have been cast yet.

By the time that Dregz completes his investigation and announces there are now two (not very strong) spells on the door everyone else is ready to get going.

Minmorc has pulled out the spikes that Bully had used to jam the door shut, Jurz has a wand in hand as he hides behind the hydra's heads, Bully is ready with his chainflail and a potion and Raven is ready with her rapier in hand.

Moffa can't find a crack to let her see past the door so she summoned a large dire wolf for a guard dog. Naturally, that caused a moment of excitement until she bravely threw herself in front of the great beast to protect it from being attacked by everyone else.

Finally, everyone is ready to tackle the door. There is no sound from behind the door now.

OOC: Main game map updated. The door would open away from this chamber but it seems to be locked or jammed or barred on the other side.

Bully smashes the door open and it slams back against the wall of the chamber behind it. Jurz scurries forward past Minmorc to clamber up onto the dire wolf's back as soon as Moffa nods.

This chamber is circular like the two above it but slightly smaller. It is 50 feet in diameter and the domed ceiling rises to peak 20 feet above the floor. All of the walls are again painted with images of chromatic dragons.

But the most startling feature of the chamber is a 20-foot wide pit running east west across the full width of the chamber. The pit drops 10 feet below floor level to a pool of dark water seething with literally dozens of crocodiles!

The northern portion of the room is bare but the southern portion is furnished as someone's bedroom with a narrow bed, a chest, a desk and chair against the southern wall. There is also another closed door in the southeast portion of the wall, more or less opposite the one that Bully has just opened.

There is no sign of the owner of this bedroom.

Moffdust grins when Jurz asks her permission to ride. She pulls on Wolfie's tail to make him sit, and then Min helps Jurz climb on. "He's yours for de whole days Jurzie. Now Wolfie, youse does what Jurzie says."

She enters the room and peers dubiously at the moat, casting Detect Magic to help her see if its real. "Lets go Dregzie." She clings onto his waist while he floats them over and she concentrates.

OOC: Wolfie has jump +21 but without 20' run up the DC would be doubled (40 instead of 20).

Night 17: The Talon of Tiamat

The team all move out into the circular chamber – most staring at the crocodile infested indoor swimming pool. Bully even dangles the white head of his chainflail down into the water.

Moffa clutches tightly to Dregz's waist as he starts to float up into the air and he starts clambering across the wall above the pool with Moffa in tow.

Moffa and Minmorc both cast a spell.

Then a male voice is heard from the southern side of the room, obviously speaking the words of a spell, although the speaker is not in sight. Seconds later a tiny ball of flame appears (at grid ref J59) and streaks across the pool straight at the dire wolf's nose. But just as the tiny ball of flame is about to hit the wolf it suddenly explodes in a huge fireball, 40 feet in diameter. Minmorc, Bully, Raven, Jurz and the dire wolf are all engulfed by the fireball but Dregz and Moffa have just barely moved far enough away to narrowly escape the flames.

OOC: Main game map updated.

Stepping behind Bully he will growl to Raven "Birdie girl, I eard a voice over der odder side and I don't want ter hear im again, don't like wot e has ter say. "Wheee! Keep goings Dregzie!" Moffdust is unharmed and excited by the thrilling near miss. She looks over to see how her friends coped with the fireball and giggles to see Min smoking. Wolfie dodged the worst of it and is ok. But seeing Jurz spurring Wolfie on she wonders what he knows that she doesn't. The croc pit looks real to her, and Wolfie can't jump that far without a run up. But she trusts the red goblin implicitly, so she calls out "Come on Wolfies! Sniffs 'im outs!"

As soon as Dregz sets her down she abandons the Detect Magic and casts Dimension Step instead on Bully and Min. They can both now teleport up to their base move to any point they can see. "Go gets 'im boys."

Night 17: The Talon of Tiamat

OOC: Partial update. I just need to know where Minmorc chooses to teleport to following Moffa's casting of Dimension Step on him, then I will close out this round.

The fireball catches Minmorc off guard but Jurz, the dire wolf, Bully and Raven manage to duck and avoid the worst of it. However, it still injures all of them to some extent. (Jurz, Minmorc and Raven are moderately wounded after the fireball, and Bully and the dire wolf are lightly wounded.)

Jurz first tries to urge the dire wolf to charge across the pool of crocodiles but when it baulks at the idea of leaping into the water, he quickly covers its eyes with his cloak, rides the wolf in a circle and then charges straight across. Incredibly, to those watching, the dire wolf's paws thud softly in mid air as it charges across the pool 10 feet above the water level.

Dregz drags himself and Moffa around the western wall then drops to the floor, whips out his flail and slams it down on the wooden chest at the end of the bed. The chest is scratched but doesn't react to his unexpected attack.

Minmorc takes a step closer to Raven so he can reach the loaded light crossbow she is holding in her off hand, then he growls instructions to her before he casts a spell on her crossbow bolt. She turns to him and opens her beak but doesn't make any sound at all.

Moffa cheers on Jurz and the dire wolf then casts a spell on Bully and Minmorc.

Bully suddenly vanishes and instantly reappears on the southern side of the room right in front of the desk. He sniffs suspiciously then swings his chainflail at an unseen target immediately to his left (L59 on the map). There is a loud thud as the flail head hits and bounces off something there.

Raven was obviously watching as she drops her glowing rapier to shoot her crossbow at whatever it was that Bully hit. Her crossbow bolt bounces off that unseen target and drops to the floor in front of Bully (L59).

Absolute silence envelopes Bully, Jurz and the dire wolf but the rest of the team can hear any sounds emanating from outside that area.

OOC: Main game map updated. Spell of silence 20ft radius around L59.

... and just like Bully did, Minmorc suddenly vanishes and instantly reappears on the southern side of the room right in front of the door (M59), effectively blocking that escape route for the invisible foe.

Then Bully's eyes dart back toward the pool and he swings his chainflail again, this time aiming 5 feet closer to the pool (L58). Once again the flail head hits and bounces off something there but this time there is no sound of the impact due to the spell of silence around them.

A few seconds later a great mass of webs materialises throughout the southern portion of the room, stretching from floor to ceiling and engulfing everyone except Raven, although Moffa is right on the edge and might manage to wriggle free.

Bully, Minmorc, Jurz and the wolf are still affected by the silence spell and hear nothing but Jurz, Moffa and Raven all heard that same male voice chanting the words of the spell seconds before the webs materialised.

OOC: Main game map updated. Spell of silence 20ft radius around L59. Everyone except Raven please roll a DC16 Reflex save to avoid being completely entangled. If you fail that Reflex save you have to break free (Strength check DC20 or Escape Artist skill check DC25 taking one full round) first before you can move. If you succeed on the Reflex save, or after breaking free, you must roll another Strength check or Escape Artist check each round and can move 5 feet for each full 5 points by which the check result exceeds 10. As Moffa is right on the edge of the web she will be out of the webs if she makes the Reflex save or other roll to break free.

OOC: Partial update. Bully and Moffa have already acted this round. Jurz and Raven have made one move action so they can still make a partial action this round. Dregz and Minmorc have not acted yet.

Bully tears through the webs and emerges on the northeastern side (N56), south of Raven, and starts sniffing, although it will take him a few more moments to work out where the smell is now coming from. He has finally escaped from the area of silence as well.

Dregz waits in the webs to see what happens.

Jurz gestures and opens and closes his mouth soundlessly while kicking the dire wolf with his heels. The dire wolf managed to avoid being entangled in the webs but doesn't manage to move anywhere immediately. Then Jurz transforms into a black bear. The extra weight upsets the dire wolf and it twists and rears to throw the black bear off its back.

Moffa wriggles free from the edge of the webs, whispers to Dregz then darts across the room to a spot near the door. Then she casts a spell, summoning a swarm of spiders right in front of Raven, but at least she calls a warning to Raven first.

Raven doesn't need to be told twice. She immediately bolts for the door, but at least she halts in the doorway once she is safely behind Moffa.

The swarm of spiders materialises at the eastern end of the room, immediately to the north of Bully. The swarm immediately begins flowing westwards towards Moffa but halts 10 feet away from her, roughly in the middle of the room, although there is still lots of movement within the swarm.

OOC: Main game map updated. Spell of silence 20ft radius around L59. Only Minmorc, Jurz and the dire wolf are affected at present.

There is no sign of Minmorc, Jurz and the dire wolf emerging yet, although the webs are jerking about enough to suggest they are certainly trying to fight their way out.

There is a sound of retching from the direction of the swarm, then a single word gasped out by the same male voice as before, then the disturbance among the spider swarm subsides considerably.

Moments later the huge pool of water and the crocodiles all vanish. Where they were is now just the flat stone floor of this circular chamber.

Dregz tentatively steps forward to test the solidity of the floor that was a deep and dangerous pit of crocodiles moments before. Despite his trepidation the floor proves solid enough to support his weight.

The webs thrash about violently again from the area where Jurz and the dire wolf are trapped. Those outside can soon see the dire wolf slowly tearing its way northwards through the webs toward Moffa. The black bear that is Jurz is barely managing to cling onto the back of the dire wolf to avoid being left behind in the webs. There is still no sign of Minmorc though.

Cat the bat flutters around the room but ends up circling around and around a spot above where the spider swarm was before. Cat is circling about 5 feet below the ceiling. A faint tinkling sound like tiny bells can be heard from where it is circling. The dire wolf pads forward to where the swarm was then rears up on its hind legs, growling and snapping its jaws at Cat, although it misses by a fair margin.

Jurz-bear slid off the dire wolf when the webs disappeared then heads back to join Bully by the southern door. In the silence of that area he turns his head back toward the centre of the room and sniffs the air.

Moffa, Bully and Minmorc watch and wait.

Dregz shouts to Raven to shut the door and she quickly does so, then stands with her back against the door, glowing rapier in her right hand and unloaded crossbow clutched in her other hand.

Then the elf's voice is heard again, this time from up near the ceiling where Cat is circling. He sounds frustrated.

"Why are you here? Tell me who sent you and whatever they promised to pay you, I will give you more! And I will help you leave safely so you need have no fear of their wrath."

This is followed by more words but it sounds like another incantation. As soon as the incantation ends, Cat stops circling and flies south to the centre of the room (to J55, up near the ceiling). The dire wolf turns to watch the little bat flutter away, still growling.

OOC: Main game map updated. Spell of silence 20ft radius around L59. Jurz, Minmorc and Bully are affected by that magical silence at present. Technically Minmorc, Dregz, Bully and Moffa can still act this round but there is no need for others to wait before posting for the new round.

Night 17: The Talon of Tiamat

Moffa waves her hands at Wolfie and Cat the bat. Cat immediately flies back to her and swoops inside her cloak. The dire wolf rears up, snapping its jaws at the ceiling but its bite is a good 5 feet short of the ceiling and fails to reach the invisible elf.

Dregz jabbers on excitedly then casts another spell at the centre of the ceiling where Cat had just flown from. This time the effect is immediately obvious as a sudden shower of rain falls from the ceiling, briefly outlining an elf-shaped patch of dry air just a couple of feet below the ceiling (at J55).

Jurz instantly points his stumpy stick at that spot and suddenly that elf-shaped patch of dry air is outlined by a pale green glow.

That glowing elf-shape is not stationary but is flying through the air. It suddenly changes course and circles away west then southwest, to stay out of reach of Bully's chainflail, then halts up near the ceiling near the bed and chest (at H58). The shape's arms gesture, pointing at Minmorc, and that same male voice is heard incanting another spell, then it says, "Help me, my big, strong orc-friend! Clear the way and open that door so we can leave here together, my friend!"

Meanwhile, the swarm of spiders climbing up the northern wall quietly disperses and disappears.

OOC: Main game map updated. Spell of silence 20ft radius around L59. Jurz is affected by that magical silence at present. Bully is affected by Dregz'z silence spell which extends 20ft radius from the centre of the ceiling.

Night 17: The Talon of Tiamat

Despite the concern created by the invisible elf's exhortation to Minmorc, the big orc shows no sign that it had any effect on him at all.

The green-glowing, invisible elf corpse quickly receives the appropriate amount of kicking and pummelling, then Bully settles down to search it thoroughly, Moffa starts on the wardrobe and casts Detect Magic to assist her search, Dregz goes back to the locked chest at the end of the bed and Minmorc gives the bed a kick as well.

Searching the invisible elf corpse proves to be easiest accomplished by the simple expedient of stripping everything off it, because anything removed from the corpse immediately becomes visible. He was evidently dressed in a rather expensively tailored courtier's outfit as though about to attend a formal function in the city, although the boots and cloak don't really suit the outfit. The search quickly produces a wand, two rings (a silver ring sculpted as a circle of overlapping shields and a gold ring with an obsidian inlay carved in the shape of a black dragon), 6 keys of various size on a key ring, and a lumpy 6-inch hexagonal disc of black metal with a slot running more than half way across it. Everyone immediately realises it looks just like the other two parts of the head of the Black Mace (aka the Black Rod) carried by Dregz.

Moffa finds more fancy elvish clothes (mostly black or purple) including a long black dress and a plain black robe in the wardrobe and several pairs of shoes.

Minmorc finds that the bed is a quality item with a soft mattress, pillow, black silk sheets and black woollen bedspread embroidered with black silk dragons. Nothing of interest falls out of it when he kicks it.

The northwest door of this room is currently closed (not locked) and the southeast door is spiked shut by two iron spikes.

Dregz slides the lumpy black metal disc onto the rod and it fits perfectly, slotting into position to complete the head of the Black Mace. Only a small portion of hexagonal shaft still protrudes from the top of the mace head, suggesting that some sort of cap belongs on the top.

Jurx listens to the banter, and decides not to challenge Min for the shieldy ring, but pipes up with  "I'sl have de dragony rings if no one else wants it."  It hasn't been reported as magical, so it is probably just pretty.  "It goes wiv dese fings I have found for my stompy stick." he says holding up a couple of dragon shaped things.

He pauses for a moment as he thinks about the levitation boots.  It might be funny watching Raven levitate and then glide down, just like a bird with a full belly returing after drinking at a pond.  Or may one of the big guys, they would be able to carry everyone down a shaft if we needed to do that again.  Dregz has some, and Moffa has her trick with the bat-basket.  But then, would a shape change be fast enough ....

Night 17: The Talon of Tiamat

Bully finally manages to knock the iron spike loose and pull them out so the door can be opened to reveal another staircase angling downwards.

When Dregz asks about the obsidian ring that allowed safe passage through the green mists of the first chamber in the Necromancer's Spike, someone remembers that Es Sarch had said "the ring suppresses the deathly effects of that chamber for only a minute or so." Minmorc bundled everyone out of the door as soon as they crossed that room so only three rounds were spent passing through there. It is still enchanted and presumably can be used again. The green mists thinned visibly as soon as Minmorc entered that chamber wearing the ring and thickened again as soon as he exited.

When Dregz mentions the wyverns someone else remembers that Es Sarch had also mentioned "B'zrrk T'marro and the pair of wyverns that he commands". You have already killed two wyverns at the Nuffleball match. They were said to lair in this giant stalactite, so their lair is presumably somewhere below. Come to think of it now that Jurz mentioned Rog, that might offer a way in for the big bat too.

Bully's question about how long Invisibility might last has Moffa scratching her head. She says there are different types of invisibility. Some wear off within a minute or two, others might last up to about a quarter of an hour, depending how powerful the caster was.

Moffa calls out Cat the bat from inside her cloak again and the faint tinkling of a tiny bell is heard again as soon as the little bat flies near the invisible corpse. Cat soon finds a convenient place to perch in the centre of the corpse and sits there, rocking back and forth in time to the tiny tinkling bell.

As Dregz examines the Black Mace it tugs gently in his hands, now pointing toward the southwest.

Dregz is cheered markedly by the confirmation that he and his tribe can make it out without dying in the mists, and that there should only be two of the wyverns.

Now they have found this piece of the Magic Stick, of course the tribe can quickly teleport to the next ... but eager as he is to do so, the little goblin feels that everyone deserves to revel in their great victory, fill their bellies and spend their hard-earned plunder.

In fact he knows for sure that there's a passage in the Holy Book which insists, by divine decree, that this must happen.

Happily the priest follows Jurz, walking or floating as his kinsman chooses ...

Night 17: The Talon of Tiamat

While Jurz is trying on the boots of levitation Raven reminds Moffa of Bully's suggestion about stowing the dead drow's corpse (the bits that Moffa spits out confirms he was indeed a dark-skinned elf) in Bully's bag of holding, so that is where the corpse ends up.

The boots shrink to fit Jurz perfectly, as all good magical footwear should do, but clicking the heels together has no effect at all. Naturally Moffa shares the three Drow command words with Jurz so he can make the boots go up, down and stop on command.

After that everyone follows Minmorc downstairs. The stairs wind down 35 feet before ending at another door. Fortunately, this one is not locked and Minmorc opens it to allow entry to a series of natural caves and ledges separated by open pits and cliffs. The first 15-foot gap is bridged by a sturdy wooden ladder laid across the opening, but the next 10-foot cliff is not equipped with any obvious ladder or stair.

However, there is a locked gate of iron bars sealing off a tunnel winding away from the northwest corner of the second cave, which looks interesting. Or perhaps it is the set of four humanoid statues and a green dragon's head that makes that tunnel look so interesting. It looks like someone has carefully equipped and arranged a set of statues to represent an adventuring party of surface-dwellers – a human warrior, an elvish mage, a gnomish cleric and a halfling thief – as though they are sneaking into the tunnel and come face-to-face with a green dragon just around the corner. There is no movement and no sound from this display, nor from the lower caves beyond this one.

Moffa casts a spell on herself then shrinks down to half size and easily slips between the bars of the gate. She cautiously takes a couple of steps toward the statues.  Then there is a sudden rushing sound and a huge stream of fog gushes out of the dragon's mouth to engulf everyone in front of it. The four statues immediately collapse on the floor in a clatter of equipment. The fog extends 20 feet from the dragon's mouth, filling the barred cave and covering the part of the ledge where Team Ardanuff is gathered. Worst of all is the awful stench of the dragon's breath. It is so foul that everyone feels nauseous.

OOC: Main Game Map updated. Everyone in the fog has to make a DC14 Fortitude save to avoid being nauseated. Moffdust, Jurz and Raven are still nauseated by the fog and retreat outside of the fog cloud where the air is clearer. It will take them a little wile to recover.

Bulldust, Minmorc and Dregz are not badly affected by the fog and make their way inside the barred cave to investigate the dragon, the statues and whatever else is in there.

Bully quickly finds a slender wooden wand positioned inside the dragon's mouth where its tongue should be.

Minmorc and Dregz discover that the four statues have just fallen over backwards away from the  dragon. The statues seem difficult to move at first and Min and Dregz soon discover that their feet are fastened to the floor by brass hinges. It would take a while to strip all the armour and equipment off the four statues.

OOC: Bulldust, Minmorc and Dregz will need to make another DC14 Fortitude save against the fog each round they remain in the fog. Those outside will recover in 1d4+1 rounds.

Night 17: The Talon of Tiamat

It takes another three rounds before Minmorc's belly finally gives up his breakfast too. That is just long enough for him to use his adamantine greataxe to slice through the brass hinges beneath the feet of the gnomish cleric statue and carry it out of the nauseating fog.

Everyone recovers from the nausea within a few rounds but repeated entry into the fog results in more bouts of debilitating nausea, so there isn't too much progress in exploring the barred cave until the fog disperses after about 5 minutes.

The four statues were a human warrior, an elvish mage, a gnomish cleric and a halfling thief, all fully equipped and armoured for adventure. The human warrior and gnomish cleric are actually wearing full plate armour and the halfling thief wears a shirt of fine mithril links, so they are clearly meant to represent an experienced and well-equipped group of adventurers. Closer inspection reveals that these statues are actually fine examples of the taxidermist's art – they really were the bodies of a human, an elf, a gnome and a halfling before they met this gruesome fate.

The dragon skin and skeleton were once a huge green dragon but are clearly hundreds of years old.

The racks along the southern wall of the narrow cave turn out to hold dozens of other body parts of a wide range of creatures native to all sorts of environments, above and below ground.

While waiting for the fog to clear there was also ample time for exploration of the lower caves below the small cliff where the team sat and emptied their stomachs. There are no conveniently placed ladders this time but Jurz' and Dregz' boots of levitation provide an easy way to navigate the short cliffs that separate the lower cave levels. Two levels down you find a large opening at the eastern end of the lowest cave. That turns out to be a cave opening on the eastern side of a huge stalactite hundreds of feet above the subterranean lake in the great cavern, with a clear view of the City of Pedestal spreading around the huge stone column of the Necromancer's Spike on the eastern side of the lake.

Two of the lower caves were clearly the nests of the two wyverns that were slain at the Nuffleball game. There are plenty of splintered bones of various animals but nothing of value in those nests. But at least there doesn't appear to be anything else living down here either.

Jurz is glad to find the opening so high up above the city, and steps right up to the edge, before he calls out  "Here Rog.  Come on.  Good boy Rog." and waits for the great bat to arrive.  Then when the beast arrives he makes a great fuss of it, scratching and stroking just like he would have done with Rog the Dog.

Then leaving the bat by the entranceway, he makes his way back up to the others and looks over the loot, although there is nothing else there for him.  However, he does inspect the dragon skin, to see if it is still in good enough condition to make a suit of armour from.

"Maybe you'se should take dat armour.  De plate might be a bit heavy, but de halfling's chain should be OK." he comments to Dregz.

Night 17: The Talon of Tiamat

Closer inspection confirms that the huge green dragon's hide and bones are hundreds of years old but in remarkably good condition. They could indeed be used for making items such as armour.

Stripping the four statues turns up a few other interesting things as well.

The human fighter was a big man, by human standards. He is wearing plate armour that is clearly of masterwork quality and carried an ordinary-looking greatsword.

The gnomish cleric was wearing small-sized plate armour that is also of masterwork quality. He carried a steel shield and a morningstar. When the armour is stripped off it is discovered that the gnome was also wearing an uncomfortable-looking hair shirt and had a reddish-orange gemstone tucked away in his belt pouch.

The elvish mage wears a dark green robe and has a silvery rod in one hand and a fist-sized glass orb in the other hand. Strange, meaningless words seem to constantly flash across the surface of the glass orb. The silvery rod has a pale blue gem at each end.

The halfling thief wears a fine-quality mithril shirt partially concealed beneath a dark green cloak. He has a silver dagger in one hand and a short wooden cudgel in the other. The wooden cudgel is about one foot long and has a crudely carved animal face of some kind at its head.

Minmorc has to rig a couple of ropes to allow him to climb down to the cave opening that he delights in calling the moon door. He is only slightly hampered by the unclothed, stuffed gnome statue, which he holds out as he pauses to admire the scenery. The dark waters of the underground lake hundreds of feet below reflect the lights of the City of Pedestal at the edge of the lake. However, there is a dark patch in the lake directly below the huge stalactite you are looking out from. That dark patch seems to be some sort of island, so Minmorc's hopes of a gnome-shaped splash are not going to be fulfilled. Looking towards the city also reveals that the nuffleball field was on the opposite side of the city, furthest away from the lake and not easily seen from this vantage point.

Because Gnomes aren't very aerodynamic (unlike elves that can be thrown like javelins) he will opt to hold it by the feet and throw it like a hammer, aiming for the little island. He likes the thought that some Sherlock type might investigate the mystery of the taxidermied Gnome, good luck deducing that it had been part of a trap in the lair of a Drow wizard and hammerthrown by a childish Ork!

He is happy to help the party stash any valuable gear and get to what ever ledge they want to jump from. He'll trust the Goblins to come up with a way to survive the descent as his best plan involves using the luxurious bed sheets as a parachute and Orcish fizziks. (Orcish fizziks are like human physics but at a -2 intelligence.)

"Could bese," he vouchsafes in a non-committal tone.

The glass orb with the flashing words, on the other hand might just be displaying messages from Bargrivyek or another god.

With his Magic Stick in hand, just in case, the priest eyeballs it, hoping to determine if it is providing useful information ... or is just a lot of magical nonsense.

Travel plans seem to be coming along rather well, with members of the team possessing 3 sets of magic items that allow them to levitate, a bag of holding, two Heward's Handy Haversacks, Rog the dire bat able to fly and carry Jurz and Jurz able to prepare a spell of Air Walk tomorrow if required.

There might be a limit to what you could take with you straight away as the weight of the dead elf's body, the 4 taxidermized adventurer statues (if you want to take them) and the huge dragon skin and skeleton would certainly add up to a substantial amount and might require a return visit with suitable aid.

Moffa will eventually be able to examine each of the magic items that Jurz has discovered but it will take several minutes, at least.

"S'not readin' my thoughts," Dregz reluctantly returns the sphere with the flashing words to Moffa, though any disappointment is allayed as she provides a nicely detailed rundown of all the treasures they have found.

"Dat shirt IZ betta dan mine !" the priest reluctantly admits, deciding to take up the offer after all as he changes into it, but makes sure that his old armour isn't left behind as that can still be on sold for shinies. OOC: will take Mithralmist Chainshirt and add Mithral Chainshirt +1 to the pile if nobody has any objections.

Some of the other items might also take his interest, though while he's certainly as greedy as the next monstrous humanoid, he doesn't even ask ... for the good of the tribe, not to mention his own continued health !

Instead the hairy little priest struts around in his new armour, watching Bully and Minmorc with approval as the pair launch the statues on a downward trajectory.

"Dey'll make it down alright," he agrees, watching them achieve terminal velocity.

The team will eventually figure a way to get themselves and the loot down from the Talon of Tiamat to the City of Pedestal. With everything packed away in the bag of holding and handy haversacks (including the dead elf and the dragonskin), with Bully and Minmorc wearing the boots of levitation and carrying Dregz and Moffa, Raven using her golden girdle and Jurz riding on Rog the direbat, Rog is able to slowly tow the levitating group across the cavern so they can levitate down to the city instead of landing in the lake.

Deduct the sale price of any items you want to claim for yourself from that share.

------------------------

Huge green dragon skin - Armorsmiths can work with the hides of dragons to produce armor or shields of masterwork quality. One dragon produces enough hide for a single suit of masterwork hide armor for a creature one size category smaller (i.e. large size) than the dragon. By selecting only choice scales and bits of hide, an armorsmith can produce one suit of masterwork banded mail for a creature two sizes smaller (medium size), one suit of masterwork half-plate for a creature three sizes smaller (small size), or one masterwork breastplate or suit of full plate for a creature four sizes smaller. (Actually, I would allow one masterwork breastplate for a creature 3 sizes smaller.)  In each case, enough hide is available to produce a small or large masterwork shield in addition to the armor, provided that the dragon is Large or larger. Because dragonhide armor isn’t made of metal, druids can wear it without penalty. Druids are proficient with light and medium armour and shields (except tower shields). Dragonhide armor costs double what masterwork armor of that type ordinarily costs, but it takes no longer to make than ordinary armor of that type.

--------------------------

So, fast forward to the Team arriving back in Pedestal.
What do you want to do now?
What will you do with the no-longer-invisible body of the Talon of Tiamat (B'zrrk T'marro, male drow) when you get back to the city?
Anybody want to buy anything at the Grand Bazaar?
Good news: Everyone can now level up to level 8. (All on 33,900XP)

If nobody else wishes to lay claim to this treasure, the priest will eagerly take it as his share.

Similarly, that there is a second cloak of resistance is a sign that the gods wish their faithful followers to be well protected, so if nobody wants that, Dregz will eagerly drape it about his own shoulders.

The priest would also like to visit the Bazaar, since we need to go anyway, but also to see if he can get his hands on some more useful items, anticipating the orders of his deity.

Night 17: The Talon of Tiamat

Team Arda-Nuff returns in triumph to the City of Pedestal, but with no fanfare at all. Whatever the locals might have thought about the so-called Talon of Tiamat they are either ignorant of his defeat or simply don't care.

However, Es Sarch welcomes you back to the Dripstone Inn with something almost approaching warmth. He inspects the body of the drow elf mage that you defeated and confirms this is indeed the Talon of Tiamat, B'zrrk T'marro. So, since possession is nine-tenths of the law, you effectively now own the cave-riddled stalactite that he called home.

Es Sarch informs you that there was not actually any reward offered for defeat of the Talon of Tiamat but he graciously offers you a total of 6,000gp (that's a whole 1,000gp each) for the return of the ring he gave you and for the keys to the Talon of Tiamat's stalactite. To sweeten the deal even further he says he will call in a favour or two with the merchants of the Grand Bazaar (who will, after all, have some reasons to be grateful for the defeat of the Talon of Tiamat). He is sure he can persuade those merchants to sell items to you at cost price, up to that 6,000gp he has already offered you. Effectively, that would double the value of that 6,000gp, as long as you spend it to buy items in the Grand Bazaar. (Obviously you wouldn't get that benefit if you wanted to buy coins, gems or jewellery, since there is not that difference in sale price versus market price on those valuables.) In other words, that's another 1,000gp each to walk away with, or 2,000gp each to spend in the Grand Bazaar.

OOC: Enough green dragon skin will be left over for leather jackets or vests for everyone. They wouldn't count as leather armour but they will certainly look good and can be designed to be worn over your normal armour if you want to.

When Bully tries the hair shirt he finds that it magically resizes to fit him.

Minmorc will gladly take the reward and will buy the party, Es Sarch and anyone else nearby a drink to celebrate. He will talk to Es Sarch about getting the captains of the Nuffle teams to meet him at the pub that night and then he will blissfully stroll to the bazaar.

Once he gets there he will seek three specific vendors; an enchanter to add the spell storing enchantment to his axe, a merchant who can sell him a potion of flying and a leather working armorer or tailor who can make a tailored dragon leather jacket. He has decided he'd like a jacket in the style of a buccaneers overcoat with flaring collar and deep cuffs. On a whim he will buy a black leather tricorn hat - when he can wear these he will appear as a hulking, brutal pirate captain wielding a a wickedly sharp great axe humming with death magic from the inflict moderate wounds spell he immediately loads it with.

He will ask the party to stay in pedestal for an overnight stay so that he can put some plans in motion for the next Nuffle tournament to proceed once they've departed and to regain his spells ready for the next piece of the black mace. He will laugh about how he isn't any good at clever tricks and that he'll just stick with enhancing and healing magics.

Moffdust smirks toothily at Min in his fancy coat and pointy hat, smugly assured that no one will look as dignified as she. She twirls in her slightly oversized black dragon leather poncho with a scalloped edge and hood with pointy ears. (Picture a 3 year old in a fairy dress). She giggles "I is a cat-bats!"

Bulldust happily downs the drink Min bought and heads to the bazaar, inspired by the dragon jackets and ready to get one in his style.  He returns wearing a black dragon leather 'bikie' waistcoat with a green-eyed copper-coloured dragon emblem on the back, with a motto in draconic runes.  He gives a twirl "Wild eh?!"

After his trip to the bazaar, Jurz wears brand new studded leather armour made from the dragon's skin, with studs made from the claws and teeth of the dragon.  The heavy shield has gone, and been replaced by this trusty old darkwood buckler, but it appears to have a bit more of an aura about it.  But perhaps that has more to do with the Stompy Stick that is clasped firmly in that hand, leaving his right hand free to hold a weapon.

"Dats' gonna bes better when we's get to de battle"

OOC:  Couldn't afford the weight and penalties for heavier armour :(  There should be enough left over for at least one dragon-hide shield and possibly other armours for 'smalls'.

A quick question for Bully and Moffa. Are your black dragon leather waistcoat and poncho made from the green dragon skin from the stalactite, dyed black, or from actual black dragon skin purchased at the Grand Bazaar? [Language unknown: Uspe hatoulted se Forvenove olla loei PE ul Re NG.]

Minmorcs coat is mostly dark green from dragon wing skin but the collar and cuffs are pale green from the finest cuts of dragon belly. He's a very fashion forward Ork. He just assumed that Moffa and Bully had decided that green wasn't their color and had gotten theirs dyed.

Night 17: The Talon of Tiamat

Dregz opts to have his scraps of dragon hide fashioned into a pair of tailored pants that really set off what of his green skin is visible through his mane of hair.

The little goblin also has a profitable time in the markets (though perhaps not as much as the vendors there), getting himself a ring, a black mask (which goes rather well with his new trousers, his boots and his dark green cloak) and yet another wooden stick for his collection.

-----------------------------------------

A good night's sleep with the Magic Stick (the Black Rod, not the other ones) turns into a terrified awakening as the priest's dreams turn to nightmares !

With trembling voice, Dregz recounts what he can remember of the horrors:

He dreams that he is standing in front of a huge, translucent, colourless glass dragon statue. The statue seems to be looking directly at him. Then the statue moves, and speaks to him. He is terrified! But the dream is a bit confusing too. Sometimes it seems like there are white giants behind Dregz, too, or he is facing the giants instead, and he is not sure which he is more terrified of, the giants or the dragon.

The Magic Stick now points to the south west when he directs it to find the location of the next (last ?) piece.

Bulldust has returned from the bazarre with bracers (arm sort), potion of flying (copycat), and a dongle for his chainflail so it stiffens like a longspear.  "Da one weapon fer all occasions!" he proudly demonstrates doing a pole vault with the stiff chain.

Seeking professional advice, he peels back the layers of jacket, armour and hair shirt to show Dregz and Jurz his skin.  "I went back to da Kobo-Wax ta get off da re-growff, but da kobolds said ma fur was jus fallin out.  An look, now I got dese."  His bugbear fur is gone, except for the spiked red hair on his head, and he has tiny iridescent copper-coloured scales all over his green skin.  "Weird eh?  D'ya fink its a bugbear fing or a Bargriefyuk fing or somefing else like da dragon skin rubbing off?"

Then he starts to change.  His body changes shape to become  longer and four legged.  Then he is a good ten feet long with nobly brown/green skin, a tail that waves from side to side and a long, grinning, mouth that is full of very sharp teeth.

However, he only holds that shape for a moment or two before reverting to his normal size and shape - and the grin is still plastered broadly across his face.

Night 23: Still in the City of Pedestal

Team Arda-Nuff have been staying at the Dripstone Inn for the six days it took for Moffa's new items to be created.

When she returns, the cowled figure of Es Sarch raises a bony finger to beckon you all over for a quiet conversation with him.

"You call yourselves Team Arda-Nuff and have proven yourselves worthy of that name by defeating the self-styled Talon of Tiamat. I do not know your plans for the future but if you are starting to feel bored, I have a small task you might like to undertake for someone I sometimes do business with; one might even consider him a friend of mine.

"There is a cave below one of the old warehouses in the city that is a natural focus of the forces that cause all matter to decay over time. Some call it a Decay Node, if that means anything to you. My friend wishes to have access to that node as any cleric spending a number of hours there can gain access to an additional divine domain – the Decay Domain. Anyone who is not a cleric would also gain some affinity with that domain from spending time there; my friend called it a 'Touch of Decay', but I am unsure what that would entail.

"Unfortunately, a drow priestess named Esmar'ra has commandeered that cave and refuses to allow anyone else access to the Decay Node. She is a priestess of Lolth, so there are few in Pedestal who would wish to be seen opposing her will. But I suspect that would not be a particular for visitors from the sun-poisoned skin of the world, such as yourselves.

"Would you be interested in taking on such a mission? Your reward would be access to the Decay Node itself, of course, as well as whatever valuable items Esmar'ra has down there with her."

"I am pleased that you will look into this matter for us," Es Sarch responded emotionlessly.

"From the few reports we have received to date there do seem to be some puzzling things happening there. The reports of a low barricade across the entry to the antechamber are, perhaps, not surprising, but the heat and glow of firelight from the antechamber certainly do not belong there. I shall await your report with great interest, when you return. It is possible that the weeks the priestess has already spent in the Decay Node is longer than is wise.

"However, there is no particular urgency. If you wish to rest and make any preparations before you  undertake this mission that will be perfectly satisfactory, and I understand you would need to spend at least eight hours in the Decay Node to benefit from it. Speak to me again when you are ready to go and I will arrange a guide to show you the way there."
